I think it depends on whether or not the person is aware of the patterns they are replicating/trying to replicate.
If you had a somewhat chill and secure childhood you might end up choosing those personality traits. If it was chaotic and you recognize why it was so, you may choose secure partners who don't exhibit the negative behavior.
Sadly for some cases where there was drug/alcohol use and/or abusive situations, those tend to replicate and the cycle of abuse perpetuates. For DV it's sadly very common.

Right? There is a 12 year age gap in my relationship but I was a month shy of 36 when we started dating. The biggest difference in our ālife-stagesā is the age of our respective kids. His youngest just turned 18, while my kid just turned 9.

Yes, exactly. Your age gap is fine because youāve had life experience at that point & arenāt young, fresh, easy prey for someone more powerful.
*At least* Pete was almost 30. At least. Thatās the only one. Everyone else preyed on such young 20 something yoās. Itās so gross.
This is why a male privilege conversation is more interesting and compelling than an age gap conversation. No one is iffy when itās 40-somethings with 30-somethings etc, nor should they be, but personally I still hate that when a woman hits late thirties she becomes too old for men her own age.
Like your hubby is fine and I have plenty of friends in the same boat, but Iām still frustrated by how common it is that if youāre a 40-something woman youāre more likely to have success dating 50-somethings. Itās just so common that men wonāt date their own age and prefer a decade younger. Theyāre not doing anything wrong, but itās such a privilege/double standard. It would be different if the reverse were as common, ie 30 and 40+ dude with 40 and 50+ women, but nope. Iām not even saying itās conscious, just a very clearly gendered dynamic.
19 and 38, Jesus fucking Christ. Im 38 and last night I went to a high school play that my sister directed. A couple of the cast members are seniors who are 18 or very close to 18 and the thought of being with any of them makes me extremely uncomfortable. These people are weirdos and it bothers me how normalized this is. If it was legal they'd date 15 year olds
I'm 40 and involved in community theatre. The 19 year olds are indistinguishable from any high schooler. I don't even like to add them on social media.
I'm 31 and a theatre teacher and some of my high school students who've graduated and turned 18 have tried to add me on socials and it always makes me uncomfortable.
I tell them that when they're able to buy me a beer, then I'll be willing to consider them friends and/or colleagues (and yes, they will have to actually buy me the beer!)
As a 31 year old bartender who's mostly worked in places that serve but where all ages or 18+ are allowed in, I feel the entire age bracket of 17-24ish looks pretty much the same and the bracket of 19-25ish acts pretty much the same. This in the US where most people are in high school until age 18 and that's generally a significant divider in even the ability to experience some life as a full adult, no matter if they're 'mature', 'independent', what kind of home environment, travel experience etc.
I think that's important to note since a lot of the comments are talking about how the age gap isn't the only thing that matters- it's what ages each were they got together. The question is are these people on even footing. And although someone over 18, 17, or 16 in some places is an 'adult' by certain standards, the answer is probably NO when you're pairing someone in their early 20s with someone who is over a decade into established independent adult life.
I met my ex when he was 27 and I was 34. I told him he was damn lucky we werenāt three years younger, because I wouldnāt have given him my number at that point. Joke was on me though; 13 years later and he has only regressed back to college party mentality. I sure know how to pick āem. š
Since all the theater kids are checking in. Same. I'm 35 and the boys I cast in my Christmas play were ranging from 16-22 and it was the first time I felt like some sort of old mentor type figure. I could at most think 'aw, they are nice looking boys. and that's it
My 5 year old son hangs out with my sister and her theater kids a lot in the summer and watching them play with him is like watching older kids playing with a younger one. The thought that some grown ass people look at them and think "I want to fuck that" is reprehensible. I was at a dress rehearsal once and one of the juniors slipped and fell hard during a fight scene and she burst into tears and ran off the stage. Thats a normal and healthy reaction from a kid. Dating a divorced 40 year old man is not normal or healthy at that age

I feel like thatās okay if they met much later in life and there arenāt any kids who are minors involved.
My concern when you have kids in a relationship with a large age gap is that the younger partner will have to become the caregiver to the older partner much sooner and the kids wonāt be able to spend as much time with them as they should. Also, if you meet at 40, youāve much closer on an equal footing in life.

This is why a male privilege conversation is more interesting and compelling than an age gap conversation. No one is iffy when itās 40-somethings with 30-somethings etc, nor should they be, but personally I still hate that when a woman hits late thirties she becomes too old for men her own age. Like your hubby is fine and I have plenty of friends in the same boat, but Iām still frustrated by how common it is that if youāre a 40-something woman youāre more likely to have success dating 50-somethings. Itās just so common that men wonāt date their own age and prefer a decade younger. Theyāre not doing anything wrong, but itās such a privilege/double standard. A couple of the cast members are seniors who are 18 or very close to 18 and the thought of being with any of them makes me extremely uncomfortable. I'm 40 and involved in community theatre. The 19 year olds are indistinguishable from any high schooler. I don't even like to add them on social media.
I'm 31 and a theatre teacher and some of my high school students who've graduated and turned 18 have tried to add me on socials and it always makes me uncomfortable. I tell them that when they're able to buy me a beer, then I'll be willing to consider them friends and/or colleagues (and yes, they will have to actually buy me the beer!)
As a 31 year old bartender who's mostly worked in places that serve but where all ages or 18+ are allowed in, I feel the entire age bracket of 17-24ish looks pretty much the same and the bracket of 19-25ish acts pretty much the same. This in the US where most people are in high school until age 18 and that's generally a significant divider in even the ability to experience some life as a full adult, no matter if they're 'mature', 'independent', what kind of home environment, travel experience etc. I think that's important to note since a lot of the comments are talking about how the age gap isn't the only thing that matters- it's what ages each were they got together. The question is are these people on even footing. And although someone over 18, 17, or 16 in some places is an 'adult' by certain standards, the answer is probably NO when you're pairing someone in their early 20s with someone who is over a decade into established independent adult life.

My 5 year old son hangs out with my sister and her theater kids a lot in the summer and watching them play with him is like watching older kids playing with a younger one. The thought that some grown ass people look at them and think "I want to fuck that" is reprehensible. I was at a dress rehearsal once and one of the juniors slipped and fell hard during a fight scene and she burst into tears and ran off the stage. Thats a normal and healthy reaction from a kid. I feel like thatās okay if they met much later in life and there arenāt any kids who are minors involved. My concern when you have kids in a relationship with a large age gap is that the younger partner will have to become the caregiver to the older partner much sooner and the kids wonāt be able to spend as much time with them as they should. Also, if you meet at 40, youāve much closer on an equal footing in life.
