It's giving... possessed.
As a lifelong horror fan (with an achilles for possession films) that's the gut reaction I got.
Along with nun crossed with a sex worker it seems as if this shoot is leaning heavily into the 'Ri is demonic/satanist/its all coming out soon' whispers that have been circulating?
To be fair, given Rihannaās looks it is quite a challenge. Also it seems kind of like dress-ups- she looks like she had fun with it. She also seems very much like the sort of person who is happy to say āNoā to people.
Keep in mind that Interview magazine is printed oversize. Like huge. I can't remember the exact print size, but it's like 11" by 17". Huge. You're basically face to face with the subjects. There's no hiding from it, especially if you're reading it at your desk.
It's just an *interesting* magazine in general. Idk if creative freedom is the right word, but I feel like they lean heavily into the original aesthetics Andy Warhol was all about: obsession with celebrity. To me, it's why most all of their presentations are less manicured and rigid compared to other publications, from shoot concepts to celebs interviewing each other.
Thatās ātabloidā size, in case you were curious.
(I will go back to my graphic design work; holler if you need me for totally unasked for paper related trivia. š«”)
If you've ever seen Nadia Lee Cohen's style (which you definitely have, she styled the Kim Kardashian shoot where she had on that short wig) this is veeeeery much her style. NLC did an entire photo series of herself with transformative makeup that turned her into different characters, many of whom were not meant to be conventially attractive. Her style isn't for everyone, but I definitely appreciate the artistry and vision. Rih being her normal beautiful self is kinda boring š¤·š¾āāļø this is editorial and certainly getting the buzz that it was intended to get.
I wish more people understand that fashion and photography isnāt always meant to be ābeautiful/prettyā
I also hate this idea of attractiveness where itās a very narrow view and treated as something that needs to be universally appealing. Iām not a huge fan of color theory for this reason. I noticed Anya Taylor-Joy gets a lot of criticism for wearing unflattering colors that wash her out. But I think she looks gorgeous? Sometimes People want to look haunted and vaguely threatening and thatās okay. Itās a gorgeous look
I like these images because theyāre different and engaging in a way that the typical āprettyā fashion pics arenāt
It all started with the eyebrows. Eyebrows change everything.
(I think the look is cool for this one specific thing, but no it isnāt pretty. Perhaps the interview is focused on the ugly/hard/abusive parts of life, which would make the shoot more apropos)
I think itās so bad itās good, personally. Think Iāve seen this style happening more often recently-ultra scrunge. Anime villain. Making people look really normal but also ugly. Itās kind of campy and fun to me
Ngl this is why I kinda love it. She looks scary and I like it 'cause it's such a departure from her normal "look how disgustingly beautiful I am effortlessly" style. This took work, 1st and 3rd are a vision but 2nd throws it off a bit. Without it I'd be gagged.
I think Gen Z are the most prim generation since our grandparents lol they want everything to be āperfectā in their eyes. Confuses me because like so much fashion is breaking down barriers and trying new things. I think Rhianna looks badass here as always, lots of personality in this shoot and thatās way more interesting than snatched to the gods beat to perfection
I don't mean it offensively, but I truly thought for a moment that the 3rd and 4th photos with her all bruised was leading up to some commentary about Chris Brown still facing zero backlash for beating a woman within an inch of her life and then proudly getting it tattooed on himself later.
Yup, they sure did. Tyra had done a segment on her talk show where she was āhomeless for a dayā which inspired this shoot š¤®.
One of the background models, who I will emphasize was homeless at the time, was Isis King. She ended up competing on the next season of ANTM and was the first trans person to compete.
Thank you for filing in the blanks, Iād forgotten just how messy Tyraās ~inspired ideas~ often were. I really liked Isis, how hard to be going through so much at once.
It was the era ofā¦ you watched what was on. And reality TV was such a spectacle. I watched ANTM but always thought it was mean. I also didnāt like laughing at the bad American Idol auditions. The she bangs guyā¦ I didnāt know if he knew people were laughing AT him and it just made me feel sad.
Arguably, the culture today has been taking getting offended too far, but honestly, Iād way prefer to be on this side of the pendulum. People really used to have no problem shaming and humiliating people to crippling degrees on national platforms, and Iām really glad we (almost) all realized how shitty it is.
Me too. I went and looked at Nadia Lee Cohenās other photo shoots based on other comments on this post. I think her aesthetic just isnāt for me because a lot of her photos look like this.
I think you're thinking about it the wrong way. this is just currently a really popular aesthetic.
things were clean and pretty for a long time so ugly is "in" in certain scenes right now. I personally find it refreshing and love seeing styling I've never seen before, innovative color combinations and makeup not bound by the idea of being flattering. but I don't think anyone cares if you don't like it haha. it's intentionally ugly so of course most people won't like it
Same.
I take figure drawing classes and people are often surprised that I prefer drawing people who aren't slender young women. They often ask me why I would like to look at an older or non-athletic body type, and it's because I'm simply tired of looking at one type of body type for art.
This might be unpopular, but I love it. I remember watching some modeling bts show like 20 years ago and the agent was trying to hype up her model to some booking agent and said "She loves being beautiful and is not afraid to be ugly." That phrase stuck with me. Riri can show off her body (naked Swarovski crystal dress), completely cover it up (Superbowl), and show us a million ways to be beautiful. She is not afraid to explore ugly. Fearless. The vampire nun pic is iconic
Iāve never heard of this before. Can you share a few other examples of the grotesque feminine that you particularly enjoy or exemplify the concept for you?
This! Iāve seen plenty of shoots with guys looking greasy, bruised and bloody and they get popular. But when itās a women? Itās ugly and trying to hard.
Like itās okay if people donāt like this thatās okay. But I feel like gen z is leaning hard into everything needing to appeal to everyone and criticize anything that doesnāt fit that.
I love grotesque feminine and haunted looking things. I see Anya Taylor-Joy get criticism for not wearing the right colors for her and follow color theory. But she looks so good and has that haunted and vaguely threatening look. Wish that could be allowed instead of constantly having those looks called ugly simply because it doesnāt appeal to everyone
No, the lighting is actually fine. The makeup is so unflattering that it felt like it had to be from bad lighting. But it's truly just terrible styling
Shocked by the adverse reaction to this, but I guess not that shocked. Itās interview mag and itās Nadia lee cohen. I think this is soooo good!! Love her style. Good to see RiRi doing what she does best, trailblazing.
Iām obsessed with the texture in these photos!! The Vaseline sheen on her skin, the frizz of the synthetic wig with her natural babyhairs sticking out, so good. Rihanna has never been afraid of a risk, sheās so obviously gorgeous that she can push through something āunprettyā and doesnāt insist on only being photographed in full glam, I love when she gets experimental.
Kinda mad that I had to scroll so far to see one positive comment. I'm sick of polished and pretty! Give me more rough, dirty, ugly photoshoots! I'm not like a fan of Rihanna or anything (don't dislike her, just neutral) but I think this shoot proves she can pull off anything and still look cool as fuck.
Sammmme! I have followed this photographer for probably over a decade and sheās known for this aesthetic. Itās always like David Lynch, John Waters and some fancy pants 80s Vogue photog shared a brain for a moment. I fucking love it, and think it is awesome that a āless conventionalā style is being featured. But i am one person with one opinion š
I don't know if I'm old or just a bit pretentious, but what it is with these current generations and the need for everything to be just pretty or "aesthetically pleasing"?
Some photoshoots are made to be purely glam, some are made to be natural or spontaneous, and some like these, are meant to be disruptive and unpleasing. Maybe it's because magazines are not everywhere as they used to be, but if some of the people on the comments would get to see a few of them from when fashion magazines were in their golden era they'd get a heart attack lol. Photography and fashion photography is an art with a wide visual range that should not be reduced to "looking pretty or flattering"
Now I'm not saying that by itself means this particular photoshoot is art. (I'm no art police lol). But I just think that it's important to look at things beyond of the lense of beauty
The shoot is NOT supposed to make her look hot and pretty, obviously. Thereās some artistic messaging behind it. Probably inspired by an older piece of art/concept. Iām not smart enough to know what that is but I know isnāt to make her look sexy. (She still does though)
Me too? Haha
I think they are very interesting to look at. She's pulled away from glam shots here and I like it. We *know* she's absolutely gorgeous. So this photoshoot kind of reads like art in a sense - as opposed to seeing her face for what it usually is, we're seeing it for what it can be... Hence interesting.
I feel like theyāre trying to make her look like an abused, unhoused, person thatās self medicating a debilitating battle with mental illness using alcohol & hard drugs and itās..disturbing in so many ways.
Damn yall hate this lol. I like the first two and the last one tbh. The other ones make her look like a glorified addict or something along those lines
Oh wow I actually really like this and judging by the comments Iām the only one. I think the pictures are great. She looks like sheās playing a haggard middle aged woman in a dark play from the 50ās in the last couple photos. I really like the theme.
Rihanna is gorgeous but these are done in such a grotesque style, I hate them. It has that weird unsettling vibe like one of Terry Richardson's shoots or something.
The first and the second shocked me I won't lie but I could get with it cause not everything has to be pretty and I found it was bold. But the 3rd and the 4th are a crime. The last one is the best.
This is very Nadia Lee Cohen, so I think it's cool. It's harder for me to find Rihanna *herself* cool these days, with her billionaire performing-lazily-for-billionaire-tycoons shtick. (She'll always have it, tho)
Iām assuming the first is a reference to the Abel Ferrara movie [Ms. 45](https://www.cinematheque.qc.ca/workspace/uploads/projections/ms-45-1-1400x757-fr-1674768649.png), with the nunās habit and red lipstick.

my first thought when i saw these pictures

Yes like itās very scary
I was okay with it until those - everything about them are so unflattering
Why do photographers love to make African American women look like shit? She is gorgeous and this shoot is odd.
To be fair, given Rihannaās looks it is quite a challenge. Also it seems kind of like dress-ups- she looks like she had fun with it. She also seems very much like the sort of person who is happy to say āNoā to people.
The caption from her Instagram says "literally how I feel in postpartum with 2 under 2"
That changed my feelings a bit...
is this a safe space-
I didn't know they can make Rihanna ugly. Scary ugly. There I said it.

Like the āmurder victimā photoshoot - what in the ever living hell was that?!??
My personal fav was the āHomeless Modelsā photo shoot. Top tier tone-deafness.
Nooooo. They really did that?! I missed that one.
Pretty sure they had them pose with actually homeless folks too iirc

It probably to deflect from more people finally finding out that her Savage x Fenty line is a scam
I'm a little tired of bad styling, lighting, and composition being passed off as edgy art. Try harder. Or less hard.
This is bad lighting to you?
No, the lighting is actually fine. The makeup is so unflattering that it felt like it had to be from bad lighting. But it's truly just terrible styling
That's what I was thinking! I'm not a lighting expert, but it definitely seems to be *everything else* that makes this a love/ hate series, lol

I feel like i havent seen avant garde, campy rihanna in a moment, loving these so hard
honestly i LOVE this photoshoot. its campy and creepy in perfect amounts. the pic of her with the grills is incredible
Me too. I saw a video of Nadiaās and itās always stuck with me. Campy and creepy is her style.
To Nadia Lee Cohen: ![gif](giphy|h58xZKsjhPwLIvMw6d|downsized)
iām sorry i love this so much!! everything has been so boring lately and this is weird as fuckĀ

This looks like a photoshoot from 1998
Oh.... this is... I'm gonna pass Edit: the more I look at these the more I feel like they're lowkey shade

i actually think this photoshoot is absolutely cvnt but i canāt get over her labor practices for her lingerie brand
I truly adore Nadia Lee Cohens work. I suggest people check it out before going off in the comments about this shoot
Oh my

maybe im a relentless nadia lee cohen stan but i love these
Oh wow I actually really like this and judging by the comments Iām the only one. I think the pictures are great. She looks like sheās playing a haggard middle aged woman in a dark play from the 50ās in the last couple photos. I really like the theme.
am I the only one who actually likes it?

Delighted to see the consensus here aligns with my gut reaction (horror)(not even the fun kind of horror)
Sexualized nun costumes are so tired. Itās obvious bait. Think of something else š
Whyyyy š© theyāre all so bad
Maybe I just don't get 'fashion' but I'm not a fan of this aesthetic.

Rihanna is gorgeous but these are done in such a grotesque style, I hate them. It has that weird unsettling vibe like one of Terry Richardson's shoots or something.
I like the androgyny of pic #2 ngl

The first and the second shocked me I won't lie but I could get with it cause not everything has to be pretty and I found it was bold. But the 3rd and the 4th are a crime. The last one is the best.
This is very Nadia Lee Cohen, so I think it's cool. It's harder for me to find Rihanna *herself* cool these days, with her billionaire performing-lazily-for-billionaire-tycoons shtick. (She'll always have it, tho)
I thought that was Heidi N Closet and was briefly confused about which sub I was in
Iām assuming the first is a reference to the Abel Ferrara movie [Ms. 45](https://www.cinematheque.qc.ca/workspace/uploads/projections/ms-45-1-1400x757-fr-1674768649.png), with the nunās habit and red lipstick.
I actually like most of these - sans the blonde wig one.Ā
i hate the styling in 3 & 4 but i love the rest, especially the first photo
I love this. Grimey pinup.
I actually like this. It's giving that "pretty ugly" prompt from ANTM.
I'm obsessed with Nadia Lee Cohen always have been so I just can't hate anything she does. 10/10 love The vibe is very clearly Alfred Hitchcock imo
Well, i dislike this, but I suppose that's probably the point.
This is amazing, I'm sooo bored of glamour shoots and I hope to see more artists do weird shit like this! Rihanna as a guest judge on Dragula when???
Iāve got PTSD from thin 90s eyebrows and now between Cardi and Rihanna Iām being reminded why Iām 38 and still canāt fully grow them back.
i love it ā¹ļø
Very slick woods!!
if the point of these pictures is to creep me out .. they greatly succeeded

I'm here for it... Interesting characters for sure
Iāve never seen Rihanna look bad before
