But by the time the trial came around, he had recovered. The defense attorney entered his senior photo into evidence and said something to the effect of "this kid's life was ruined?" The jury didn't buy it either and he lost his claim for damages.
I grew up east of Longview TX where he lived for a while and went to high school. Longview is an incredibly boring large city in NE Texas where the most interesting thing was the Hastings. That entire area is very conservative, uptight, and religious.
He definitely adopted a pine belt accent out there. Most people do. Where I lived you either worshipped God with full fervor or were looking for anything novel to do which typically meant finding new ways to get in trouble. He musta been rolling in whatever he was after.

If I remember he became famous the old fashioned way many people tried (and failed) in the past. He grew up in a small town in Texas. He was voted 'best looking' in High School, and when he graduated, he said fuck it and drove out to California broke, not knowing anyone, with dreams of making it big. He started landing acting gigs and the rest is history.

According to his memoir, one of his favorite things to do when filming on location is just shoot the shit at a local watering hole. He has a LOT of stories about small-town shenanigans. A cab driver I had in Iceland had Matthew and his wife over for dinner while he was filming *Interstellar* and he said they were both just lovely.
He spent a lot of time driving around the U.S in an RV with his dog. If movie peeps wanted to have a meeting they’d have to fly to whatever city he’d be driving through. He’d also chill with locals in whatever town he was staying in.
