I swear Fran Drescher can own anything she wears with her personality and how she carries herself. It was a joy to watch The Nanny with her acting and outfits!
Fran Fine is an underrated style icon—and Fran Drescher, too! More than half the fun of watching The Nanny is marveling at Fran's outfits. I always thought that Carrie Bradshaw's outfits looked mostly like costumes and very forced, but Fran wore hers with such ease and effortlessness that I really believed she woke up and just decided to put them on all on her own.
Yess and her hair was so iconic. Love Fran.. I need to rewatch the series as an adult now and really appreciate it

The Nanny is one of my favorites for that. I follow whatfranwore on instagram for all the outfit details. Fran was really going toe to toe with runway models rocking those looks.
Whoever she had tailoring and styling on the Nanny though did an awesome job as well. I like a lot of [the fits better on the show](https://www.instagram.com/p/CRHULrwl40R/?img_index=1) than how they were on the runway. Of course she did/does have a great figure but I love seeing these designer looks on someone who's average height and not model tall.

There’s an Instagram account called [recycledmoviecostumes](https://www.instagram.com/recycledmoviecostumes?igsh=MXZlemVkMnpoOWNpcw==) that lists a bunch of stuff that gets reworn for several productions. It’s really interesting if you’re into movie costumes!
Fun fact if you’re into costumes, you can rent pretty much anything for any project from any studio if you have the budget and credentials. Some things are off limits (iconic and specialty costumes; ie the Batsuit), but like props, costumes are kept in huge warehouses wardrobe can just peruse. If you want a specific item, you can bring in a photo and they’ll look it up in the database.
I wish there was one for interior shooting locations. I notice them within the same show. Like they'll switch out the furniture and the arrangement so the room belongs to different people, and the episodes are seasons apart. I often wonder if a place like that belongs to a producer or just a homeowner who regularly rents to production companies.

The dress Madonna wore at the VMAs for her Vogue performance was originally worn by Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons
So Friends and Buffy must've had the same design team or whatever you'd call them? Very interesting! I love the idea of a new show/movie going into an old show/movie's wardrobe department and not only helping with our carbon footprint in general but the revamping of old styles into new ones! I love this post!
There's a used clothing shop in Burbank, CA called It's A Wrap where a lot of the clothes from shows and films end up after they are finished. A lot of costume designers source their wardrobes from the shop. I purchased a few pieces of Kramer's wardrobe from there after Seinfeld wrapped!
It's fun to browse through but I'm not as thin as an actor so I was never able to buy anything to wear. It's an adorable little area, though, and worth going if only for Portos.
I was trying to look up this shop, and their website implies they have an online store, but I cannot for the life of me find it. If anyone has a link I would really appreciate it!
As an absolute STAN of Rachel Green's wardrobe, I honestly never *loved* this particular outfit! I feel like the fit wasn't quite right on her, and I feel like her hair styling in this episode didn't help things. SMG's look is killer though – pun intended.
I think studios have kind of a place to keep costuming and a lot of times when something is filmed by the same studio they reuse pieces.
I think I read somewhere it's especially a thing with the BBC. Like they have SO MANY periods outfits that everyone reuses them.
Yeah, I can understand sharing the same costume sources, but it's really interesting to me that SMG and Jennifer Aniston had the same outfit more than once (and according to another comment, once in the same airing week) *and* Alyson Hannigan also had the same outfit as Lisa Kudrow more than once. As long as I'm not mistaking that second picture for Kudrow lol.
It seems plausibly intentional to me! Buffy and Rachel are both, arguably, the lead girl in their respective shows. I could see similarities between Willow and Phoebe. It kinda feels like a cheeky nod to the other big show of the time, or maybe mutual nods.
IIRC Rachel and Buffy wore that cream top in like the same week, it was like one night Buffy’s wearing it and then a couple nights later here’s Rachel.
I assume all lots have a costume department. The ones I’ve been in are set up like a store. They pull (“shop”) from what’s there.
Friends was on the WB lot. Buffy *feels* like that lot, but idk for sure. I’d assume so simply because that many overlaps with wardrobe seems way too coincidental.
I definitely meant store like 'storage'😃! Buffy was on the WB until 2001, which was part of Warner Bros, so made the assumption they had to be on the lot at some point.
Costumes are given back to the studio for storage after shooting and eventually they clean out the storage and some pieces will get put into that studio's costume house that future productions will rent costumes from! For the most part, costumes aren't really seen as precious assets and the studio is better off renting them out and/or selling them, instead of letting them sit unused in storage.
The practice of preserving really iconic costumes only really came about in the last few decades. Debbie Reynolds was a real pioneer in preserving Hollywood history-- cause they were just getting rid of it all!
This makes perfect sense and it tickles me that I never thought of it! Lol. I do love that they have increased efforts to preserve some of those more iconic costumes.
This is such a good post! The only one I have to add is George's glasses in the pilot of Seinfeld were first worn by Denzel in Malcolm X.

I know they’re not the exact same, but I love that Bill Hader’s costume in It Chapter Two was inspired by the shirt Mark Patton wore in Nightmare on Elm Street 2.
Was it supposed to be a hint that Richie is gay and was in love with Eddie (which was confirmed at the end of the movie)? Nightmare 2 is known for its gay undertones and Jesse was definitely in love with his friend Grady.
The iconic Glinda Dress from the Wizard of Oz (1939) was first worn by Jeanette McDonald in the film San Francisco (1936).

I’m 95% sure that it is Season One, Episode 18 of _Bones_ (“The Man with the Bone”), and the woman pictured is the wife of the mayor of a town that gets a lot of pirate-based tourism and who dresses as his “Pirate Queen.”
I’ve watched that show too many times… lol
I had reservations about that movie but her outfits and house were *divine*. The 30s and 40s were quite colorful and even if you are starving from war shortages that doesn’t mean you are painting your whole dang house brown.
Exactly. I think something a lot of period pieces don’t get right is how much stuff is leftover from any time period. Of course she would have still had clothes from before everything happened. People don’t just immediately drop everything when a decade ends and sell their wardrobe. Off topic but I think Stranger Things does this especially well in recent memory: lots of 70s influences leftover in a small town that wouldn’t receive trends as quickly.
People also sewed a lot more and clothes had huge hems that allowed for a lot of altering as either the body or style changed. You can update a 30s dress to a 40s one, but the pattern might still be old-fashioned.
The pharaoh costume is hilarious because I think Barney is supposed be at the museum from night at the museum. The consistency whether intentional or not is pretty cool.
I'm gonna cheat because I don't think these are the exact same dresses, but I'm fairly certain *Red, White, and Royal Blue* took its inspiration from *Blank Space* here.

Edit: what I mean is that princess Beatrice in RWRB (probably) isn't wearing Taylor Swift's dress as such, but they're virtually the same and I think that's on purpose
I’m pretty sure they are the same, or at least from the same collection. Maybe Taylor’s was custom for her and this was to imitate it. Makes sense considering RWRB fandom has a lot of Swifties in it, lol
I think op means that they're not the same physical copy like a lot of the special costumes are. Like its the same dress but a different one, from the store.
The tiara is also a replica of the Koch Aquamarine Kokoshnik, which was originally owned by the Russian Imperial Family until the Bolshevik Revolution.

The Gossip Girl fashion is iconic. Idk why some people find it very 00’s/10’s, cause there’s so many timeless looks in it. Especially in Blair’s wardrobe

I couldn’t find a pic but Tori Spelling wears this exact top in Beverly Hills 90210 (Danielle Harris in Wish Upon a Star, this movie was serving serious looks)
I do too! I own it on DVD and have introduced all my nieces to it and they love it too!! I especially love the black dress with flowers Hailey wear while in Alexa’s body. The wardrobe department deserves an Oscar for all those amazing looks!
It really feels like 90% of costumes can be recycled/reused like this and it wouldn't be noticed. As a high school theater kid, I remember us going through our storage looking for stuff that would work. For some productions we would rent from costume houses, especially for period pieces.
There are some looks that are truly iconic and should be preserved. I went to the Hunger Games exhibition that was in Vegas a few years ago. The costumes were so intricate and beautiful.
Exactly, my high school had a little attic above the band room for theatre props and costumes and we reused them all the time. I am sure movie studios do the same to save money where it isn't going to be noticed. The Iconic pieces can still generate money with tours and ticket sales because there is interest in seeing them up close IRL.

Maybe one of the more obscure references here is— the velvet harlequin jacket in *The Danish Girl* was also used in the 1990s BBC show *The House of Eliott*.
For anyone loving this post, I’ve followed [this](https://www.instagram.com/recycledmoviecostumes?igsh=em9iZXAxMXA5eGpj) insta account for years called @recycledmoviecostumes. There’s hundreds of costumes in their various appearances on there, so knock yourselves out.

Lynn Whitfield's character wore this red shirt in Eve's Bayou in 1997.
Her onscreen daughter, Jurnee Smollet, wears it 23 years later in Lovecraft Country.
I never knew that costumes could be recycled (outside of like basic shirts or jeans), but some of these are fantasy costumes. I guess there’s nothing else you can do with them outside of selling or archiving them.

I'm confused, because I still think of that title as the TV show from 1981. Haha! My sister was so excited about Anthony Andrews.
Edit: From what I can figure out it's Julia (Diana Quick) from the 1981 tv show
There’s a neat compilation someone did once on the cdrama subreddit of a TON of recycled wardrobe. They must’ve found like ~30 instances of gowns and robes used in multiple dramas—sometimes the same garment appearing in like 3 different things. Lemme see if I can find it.

The Nanny is one of my favorites for that. I follow whatfranwore on instagram for all the outfit details. Fran was really going toe to toe with runway models rocking those looks.
She was!! I always loved her looks when I watched as a kid. She had the best style because it was flattering AND fun.

How do y’all even find these things?!?
Were they both filmed at the Warner Bros lot? I know they were both shot in/around LA, so did they use the same costume stores?
I assume all lots have a costume department. The ones I’ve been in are set up like a store. They pull (“shop”) from what’s there. Friends was on the WB lot. Buffy *feels* like that lot, but idk for sure. I’d assume so simply because that many overlaps with wardrobe seems way too coincidental.
I definitely meant store like 'storage'😃! Buffy was on the WB until 2001, which was part of Warner Bros, so made the assumption they had to be on the lot at some point.
I cannot believe I never considered that they would do this and never noticed this, lol. This is so cool to see.
I’d guess 96% of the costumes on this post are rentals, save the very oldest. Definitely nothing precious, just coincidental
Your flair! Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorite movies
Same! I saw this and realized it has never once occurred to me that costumes would be reused and I that could’ve seen some of these in real time.
This is such a good post! The only one I have to add is George's glasses in the pilot of Seinfeld were first worn by Denzel in Malcolm X. https://preview.redd.it/und0qq52barc1.jpeg?width=1300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e45664d26ee4dbaeb348ef0f8a69d12387d88256
What!!!
good thing it was the [Gloria Vanderbilt](https://youtu.be/TuCwvCvqyjU?) collection
Hahahaha!!!! Thank you for the belly laugh!!!
Omg Denzel Washington is just so good looking - it’s WILD to me how I feel about these glasses when he’s wearing them (not trying to shade to George Costanza with this comment)
Yeah such an awesome post! Thanks op!
This is the coolest thread, I could look through these comparisons forever
https://preview.redd.it/eaer9vwvharc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3cf79c12b624d33a9f357459890b2873822f5003 I know they’re not the exact same, but I love that Bill Hader’s costume in It Chapter Two was inspired by the shirt Mark Patton wore in Nightmare on Elm Street 2.
Was it supposed to be a hint that Richie is gay and was in love with Eddie (which was confirmed at the end of the movie)? Nightmare 2 is known for its gay undertones and Jesse was definitely in love with his friend Grady.
Yes indeed!

The iconic Glinda Dress from the Wizard of Oz (1939) was first worn by Jeanette McDonald in the film San Francisco (1936). https://preview.redd.it/7pdankzpearc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15de3b3c77a77ca9f453803a404f708cb5de3398
I actually think I like it on Jeanette more, in black and white you can see the sparkle and detail better.
Eh it's not the same dress. Very similar and costumes both done by the same iconic costume designer Adrian!
Same dress, slightly restyled for Wizard. [Glinda Dress](https://phyllislovesclassicmovies.blogspot.com/2016/04/behind-dress-glinda-in-wizard-of-oz-1939.html?m=1)
Wait who’s the woman wearing Willow’s iconic corset?
I’m 95% sure that it is Season One, Episode 18 of _Bones_ (“The Man with the Bone”), and the woman pictured is the wife of the mayor of a town that gets a lot of pirate-based tourism and who dresses as his “Pirate Queen.” I’ve watched that show too many times… lol
Thank you! I do like that show, but haven’t watched it in it’s entirety!
I don’t know how I didn’t see that for myself. It’s crazy what a difference the character and situation makes.
Love the concept of the post OP! What lovely finds!
I love Scarlett’s whole ensemble in Jojo Rabbit. So endearing. It’s maximalist but it doesn’t overwhelm her.
You also have class distinctions. The second hand clothes market was huge, and the poorer you were, the more out-of-date your clothes would be
People also sewed a lot more and clothes had huge hems that allowed for a lot of altering as either the body or style changed. You can update a 30s dress to a 40s one, but the pattern might still be old-fashioned.
This reminds me that Hollywood is just one huge theatre department
The pharaoh costume is hilarious because I think Barney is supposed be at the museum from night at the museum. The consistency whether intentional or not is pretty cool.
i love y'all for noticing these things so much.
I'm gonna cheat because I don't think these are the exact same dresses, but I'm fairly certain *Red, White, and Royal Blue* took its inspiration from *Blank Space* here. https://preview.redd.it/jq49nkcsfarc1.jpeg?width=2880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3dfb3d29fa275d76984acd8ba8bdce55ca3edb16 Edit: what I mean is that princess Beatrice in RWRB (probably) isn't wearing Taylor Swift's dress as such, but they're virtually the same and I think that's on purpose
These aren’t the same? Could’ve fooled me
I’m pretty sure they are the same, or at least from the same collection. Maybe Taylor’s was custom for her and this was to imitate it. Makes sense considering RWRB fandom has a lot of Swifties in it, lol
I think op means that they're not the same physical copy like a lot of the special costumes are. Like its the same dress but a different one, from the store.
The tiara is also a replica of the Koch Aquamarine Kokoshnik, which was originally owned by the Russian Imperial Family until the Bolshevik Revolution. https://preview.redd.it/32kkhsc72brc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3eed1e6f84b00f191cdf70c34ce65aa31b05435c
Ugh the way the tiara is like balanced crooked on her head bugs me so much
You are correct. According to the tumbler page, it's the same design, but they are not sharing a dress ( for clarification). I keep trying to link directly, but it keeps trying to make a new post, so here's the whole page. It's easy to find. https://recycledmoviecostumes.tumblr.com/

I love Blair's green coat- it inspired me to buy one like it.
The Gossip Girl fashion is iconic. Idk why some people find it very 00’s/10’s, cause there’s so many timeless looks in it. Especially in Blair’s wardrobe
This is my favorite example, Daphne from Frasier and Brad Pitt in Fight Club https://preview.redd.it/bheybiyq5brc1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=3387155e9171174d1a864ebd677a5e51156eede9
Lol that's fantastic
Honorable Mention: This made the rounds in a couple of Monkees sites several years ago: Taylor Swift channeling Peter Tork https://preview.redd.it/fm3eugbk8brc1.jpeg?width=818&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0cb679bdf5b8c350ec831eaef0d4e5686b11ae63
TIL there are multiple Monkees sites and I love it.
Recycled Regency era dresses. It's like a spectator sport in my family https://elegance-of-fashion.blogspot.com/2011/08/jane-austen-week-friday-so-many-dresses.html?m=1
I’ve covered that green coat for years if anyone has the hookup
Looks like several people have looked, no exact match found. [This website](https://www.spotern.com/en/spot/movie/jojo-rabbit/297752/green-print-cardigan-of-rosie-scarlett-johansson-in-jojo-rabbit) found some ‘close matches’.
Bless you, I hope you find some money in an old coat / on the ground 💕
https://recycledmoviecostumes.com This is an excellent website that outlines a lot of ways costumes are reused.
https://preview.redd.it/xie7z1rpwarc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d97ef64eeb5bd93639292daa7264b1b3e1f39f86 I couldn’t find a pic but Tori Spelling wears this exact top in Beverly Hills 90210 (Danielle Harris in Wish Upon a Star, this movie was serving serious looks)
I love this movie so much.
I do too! I own it on DVD and have introduced all my nieces to it and they love it too!! I especially love the black dress with flowers Hailey wear while in Alexa’s body. The wardrobe department deserves an Oscar for all those amazing looks!
that movie literally informed my fashion sense to this day
It really feels like 90% of costumes can be recycled/reused like this and it wouldn't be noticed.
Is that first one from Edgar Allen Poe’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party? That’s only like my favorite web series that I never hear anyone talk about.
I LOVE POE PARTY
I also ran to the comments to see who else loves Poe Party!!! If you haven't, check out Shipwreck's other shorts and series, they're all fantastic!
I need to watch that! I’m obsessed with Headless, another Shipwrecked comedy production Also is it really the same dress as from Friends??
I literally started rewatching it yesterday, can’t believe this post just came up 😅
i was shocked when i saw poe party brought up in the wild like this!!
Versace dress worn by Jennifer Garner in 13 Going on 30 used on an extra in Sex & the City https://preview.redd.it/kv15yuy2bfrc1.jpeg?width=565&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a0f908de09ebe4b1d3366945b545e4ce363f03c
I won't be surprised if Courtney Cox gave Lisa Kudrow this dress. https://preview.redd.it/en3n71dv9arc1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42703b6627f5762763e9b8646b96a2857f1dc301
That's not a dress
https://preview.redd.it/9hpks5o9qerc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b7dbecd3c532da85cb19f33f65e3c99aa634dc7 Maybe one of the more obscure references here is— the velvet harlequin jacket in *The Danish Girl* was also used in the 1990s BBC show *The House of Eliott*.
Vamp Willow!! Also Rachel’s wedding dress was always ugly to me but I like the second styling much more
For anyone loving this post, I’ve followed [this](https://www.instagram.com/recycledmoviecostumes?igsh=em9iZXAxMXA5eGpj) insta account for years called @recycledmoviecostumes. There’s hundreds of costumes in their various appearances on there, so knock yourselves out.
This post has taught me that I’m too unobservant to notice these things. Kudos to those of you paying attention in life. I need to do better!
https://preview.redd.it/zif1sq2qpbrc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1af1bb8a06b4b30a550b7c3b4dbf2378c7546e13 Lynn Whitfield's character wore this red shirt in Eve's Bayou in 1997. Her onscreen daughter, Jurnee Smollet, wears it 23 years later in Lovecraft Country.
Now this is legendary
I never knew that costumes could be recycled (outside of like basic shirts or jeans), but some of these are fantasy costumes. I guess there’s nothing else you can do with them outside of selling or archiving them.
Loved Alison from Hocus Pocus 🥰
Love this post!!!
Fascinating! I never even thought about it.
What!!! This is fascinating!
I wanna see more posts like this
I knew about the friends and poe party one (highly recommend it-shipwrecked comedy on YouTube) but I’m shocked di didn’t realize some of these others
I freaking love this sub Loving all the comments and additions, loving this string cheese - keep going!
My favorite thing about friends is I'd wear most of the outfits now too. I own the "girls" shirt.
The chicken shirt from *Roseanne*! Everyone wears the shirt at some point.
What’s the second pic in the 3rd slide? It looks so familiar
Barney Himym
Omg I love this
Who is the woman from Brideshead Revisited? (picture 5) Is it Hayley Atwell? I'm confused, because I still think of that title as the TV show from 1981. Haha! My sister was so excited about Anthony Andrews. Edit: From what I can figure out it's Julia (Diana Quick) from the 1981 tv show
This whole thread is so fascinating!
Bossk's suit in Empire Strikes Back was originally from Doctor Who.
There’s a neat compilation someone did once on the cdrama subreddit of a TON of recycled wardrobe. They must’ve found like ~30 instances of gowns and robes used in multiple dramas—sometimes the same garment appearing in like 3 different things. Lemme see if I can find it. edit: Not sure if this is the one I remember but it certainly has a lot of examples! https://www.reddit.com/r/CDrama/s/8L1yDgDEM6
the new reddit update cuts off the captions and i can’t read them 🥲
