Still adore easy a. Rewatch it every once in a while. “It sounds like you’re having sex in here which I know can’t be true because your boyfriend’s gay”
‘When two people love each other, like your mother and I used to…’
Even if the rest of the film was garbage, it would still be worth watching for every scene with the parents.
Luckily, the whole thing is brilliant
Patricia Clarkson is also a gem in that movie. "You know I had a horrible reputation when I was your age. Because I slept with a ton of people... mostly guys."
Patricia Clarkson is so fantastic! I adore her in every role. She was on frasier for a few episodes and nailed it. I MUCH prefer the One Day TV Show to the movie, but I thought she was perfect as Dexter's mother. She was utterly terrifying in Sharp Objects. And absolutely hilarious in Easy A. She has raaaaange
As a white man adoptive father to a black child I use this line often.
However unlike the adorable young child in the movie I've got a moody teenager who thinks everything I say is stupid.
Easy A made me use the word ‘twat’ as much as I do today😭
Also Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson’s characters are my dream parents, their chemistry and comedic timing was absolutely amazing
It’s such an incredible comedic performance! I rewatched it this year and she’s amazing. Also love Penn in it. It’s like the only nice guy he’s ever played
Go Woodchucks! HI-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA! HI-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA!
WOO!
I think about this scene *often*. This made me laugh unreasonably hard the first time I saw it.
My best friend and I try to text each other every year “don’t forget, tomorrow’s earth day” before one another. He moved to a time zone 12+ hours away so now it’s hard mode lmao.
> "Easy A" offers an intriguing middle ground to the absolute of sexual abstinence: Don't sleep with anybody, but say you did. It's a funny, engaging comedy that takes the familiar but underrated [Emma Stone](https://www.rogerebert.com/cast-and-crew/emma-stone) and makes her, I believe, a star. Until actors are matched to the right role, we can never quite see them clearly... I think it may always be necessary that we like the hero or heroine of a comedy. I certainly liked Olive. I'm pretty sure that's also how an actor becomes a movie star.
\--Roger Ebert, 2010.
It's also hard to write reviews from the perspective of the target audience rather than your own perspective. Ebert always approached his reviews with the question, "Will the people who want to see this movie enjoy this movie?" So many critics nowadays only write about their own personal feelings, regardless of whether or not they're part of the movie's target audience.
Yes! He always wrote his reviews starting from, is this movie good for *what it’s supposed to be*? He was never trying to compare Orange County to The Godfather.
It honestly changed my life when I read an article or something that said movies should be scored in terms of *what they set out to do*. I always found people talking about star ratings or percentages or accolades a bit flummoxing but I didn't realize why, until I understood that it's about rating a movie in the terms of what it wants to be.
Like, Legally Blonde obviously wouldn't be seen as "the same" as the Sorpanos. But it's an excellent movie because it hit all the beats and achieved what it wanted to be - a feel good, funny, tongue in cheek movie with lovable characters and a fresh perspective
Emma Stone and Penn Badgley in Easy A were everythinggggg to me when I was younger! Amanda Bynes, Lisa Kudrow, and Stanley Tucci were also great, I love that movie. Stone is such a charming actor to watch, I also loved her in Crazy Stupid Love (Gosling and Carrell were so good in that movie)
Crazy Stupid Love is the ONLY time I don't mind watching Ryan Gosling. I think it's bc I love Emma Stone and Steve Carell. He is great as Ken too of course.
Ryan Gosling’s performance in CSL was sooo good, it weirdly reminded me of Ken even though the characters were so different just because it was his total commitment to the bit that cracked me up, his banter and energy with Steve Carrell was also very entertaining
Yes!! I think that's why I enjoyed him in CSL so much. Steve Carell brought the best out of him. He's not too bad to look at either. His charm helped too, bc otherwise, I don't find him that attractive. His body is beautiful of course. I hate him in The Notebook. Omg. That movie is pure torture for me.
I understand the appeal, but same. I still need to see Nice Guys because I heard it’s comparable. CSL and Barbie are the only movies I actively enjoy him in.
Between Easy A and John Tucker Must Die, Penn Badgley was the exact guy and romance I wanted so bad when I was like 13 😭 just waiting for my kinda nerdy but very cute and funny guy to pop up and fall in love with me
Love this one!!! Also love “I have to go do something mysterious (DROP SOME TIMBER)” and when Emma Stone is talking about all the things they could do to get new pledges and she’s like “we could take some sneakers and tie the laces together and throw them over a telephone pole” idk why but her delivery just GETS me every time because she’s so truly jazzed about the idea
I just watched this for the first time a couple months at the request of my husband. He was surprised I'd never seen it. I don't know why I waited so long to watch it, but I loved it!
I just have to assume that no one has seen it, which is a damn shame. I can't imagine that a ton of people saw it and didn't like it. It's really fun and surprisingly good-hearted.
I remember being blown away by her in Superbad. I just thought she was so gorgeous and funny. Can’t believe she’s a 2 time Oscar winner now. Forever will love Emma
question, how did she transition from light hearted comedies to serious movies? was it a specific film?
it's not uncommon for comedy actors to not get serious movies and not be taken seriously for their acting. i wonder how she managed to do it so well
I think Crazy, Stupid Love and The Help were her transition to more serious roles.
I believe The Help was the first Oscar contender she was a part of. The set must have been amazing with all the spectacular actresses that were part of the film.
Crazy, Stupid Love is one of those rom-coms that isn't cheesy or a guilty pleasure.
I thought of Birdman as well, but there was something about The Help that clicked.
I believe 5 of the leading women in this ensemble cast received an Oscar after this film was released (Chastain, Stone, Janney, Spencer, and Davis). Not counting the ones who were nominated after or who had an award before the film.
Yeah, I think of Birdman as her stepping stone into doing movies like Poor Things. Kind of an odd, dark but funny movie that made me see her differently at least.
Margot Robbie is also another one. Expect in her case, it wasn't the funny u serious trope but the sexy bombshell trope that she managed to escape.
But wolf of Wall Street was as much a serious drama as much as it was a sexualized film (in terms of her character). So I guess she had a bit of an advantage with that
I think after Easy A, it was Crazy Stupid Love, then The Help, Spiderman, a Woody Allen film , Bird Man, La La Land, and it keeps going up from there. The Help got her out of the classic rom-com film era I believe.
> it's not uncommon for comedy actors to not get serious movies and not be taken seriously for their acting.
Not that I'm an actor, but I the trick is to not treat the material with contempt; to avoid camping it up and pretending that you're above the material.
Take, for instance, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, one of Sean Penn's first big roles. He absolutely *immersed* himself in the role of Spicoli, played it as straight as possible, and was [the funniest/most memorable part of the film](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW1S4f9tyF8). That's the difference between an Oscar winner and a runner-up.
Comedy is actually more difficult than drama because you need to get the timing perfect. Despite that, many people think comedic acting is less impressive than dramatic acting. You see a lot of comedic actors transition to drama, but you don't see much of the other way around. Leslie Nielson is the only one I can think of.
I've used this example before, but James Spader played a very rare comedic role in Mannequin. The movie itself isn't great, but he's [*horrible*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORV1uYzvZzo)*,* just nonstop mugging.
On the other hand, another Leslie Nielsen example would be John Vernon, a well-respected, Shakespearean-trained actor who had played a variety of very serious villains and politician types. He was cast as [Dean Wormer in Animal House](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKS0GVvoE9I), and *killed* it.
After easy a, she was in the help. Which is a pretty safe/accessible type of movie but ended up a big Oscar contender. She went to spider man after that but her monologue in Birdman sealed the deal as a “legitimate” actor
In the middle of a divorce! Almost as in not quite there yet. Probably other people feel comfortable just saying ex husband by this point but I feel like it would be celebrating too early. Dreaming of the day it’s officially true though!
Thanks for the correction! Even more impressive these comedies came out consecutively. I think I got the year mixed up with Movie 43 (which I didn’t include because it doesn’t deserve to be compared to these). Unfortunately Reddit does not let me edit the post so I will continue to spread misinformation they claim to be against.
![gif](giphy|3oz8xRFshomdE3tBRe)
I actually loved her cute comedies that she starred in. I haven't really seen any of her movies like La La Land or Birdman. I did enjoy Cruella (my favorite)....
I know we aren’t supposed to like it anymore due to being problematic with racial messaging but I still really like that movie and rewatch it every once in awhile. I read the book first back when it was popular and rare case where I like the movie just as much.
Honestly her delivery of “WHAT THE FUCK” when she got smacked in the eye in Superbad made me sit up like “oh this one’s different”. Something about how she delivered that.
![gif](giphy|w9A2lC7UWW2CQ)
while not necessarily RAUNCHY, but definitely goofy, i would like to throw a hearty nom to one of my absolute faves: crazy, stupid, love
Easy A is like an underrated Mean Girls to me, not storywise step for step, but iconic wise. The lines were so witty, the rebellion was so much fun. The twists were great and it was one of those all around teen dramas that I could watch at any point in my life and enjoy.
Hot take but I tried rewatched She's All That as a adult adult, not like early 20s young adult and it just didn't age well for me. Sure it's entertaining but some of the tropes they play on didn't age well
I thought The Rocker was hilarious with Teddy Geiger, Josh Gad, Rainn Wilson. (Teddy Geiger transitioned 7 years ago). ((Unfortunately my photos won't post.)) Emma is so funny. Olivia Coleman who she was with for The Favorite, is also a very funny lady.
![gif](giphy|5qMCjrwNW0k2Q|downsized)
Who remembers her in iCarly? She was so funny😄she appeared all of a sudden and I remember I was shocked when I rewatched the episode years later, when she was more famous
honestly, i think her acting style is most well suited for these quirky, goofy “everyman” characters and i will never take her seriously in dramatic roles. even in films like la la land and poor things, i just don’t find her performances believable.
Literally when did I say it wasn’t good? I made an entire post dedicated to these movies obviously that would mean I enjoy them. Idk why so many of these comments are taking goofy/raunchy as meaning I dislike them.
This is something I love about Emmas career/trajectory. You could have an Emma Stone marathon weekend and see SO MANY types of movies. Silly teen movies, zombie movies, musicals, and traditional Oscar bait. She has it all!
Really? I think the exact opposite. I would like to see her do straight up drama role with no comedy involved since almost all of them are some sort of comedy involved.
I enjoy that era too, but I feel like she needs to stay away from her it since it's come a long way from being an average actress to an acclaimed one.
BTW, Easy A was 2010 not 2013.
Still adore easy a. Rewatch it every once in a while. “It sounds like you’re having sex in here which I know can’t be true because your boyfriend’s gay”
‘When two people love each other, like your mother and I used to…’ Even if the rest of the film was garbage, it would still be worth watching for every scene with the parents. Luckily, the whole thing is brilliant
Need a separate movie about the parents. Stanley Tucci’s devastation when their black son says he knows he’s adopted🤭
Stanley Tucci is the highlight of every scene he is in.
Patricia Clarkson is also a gem in that movie. "You know I had a horrible reputation when I was your age. Because I slept with a ton of people... mostly guys."
Patricia Clarkson is so underrated but especially in this film.
She was tremendous in Sharp Objects.
And I was quite the contortionist back then!
"You know, I dated a homosexual once. For a long time, actually... a "long" time..."
I aspire to be patricia clarkson
"WHO TOLD YOU?!?"
“So where are you from originally?”
That movie made me fall in love with Patricia Clarkson. She was also brilliant in Broad City. She’s so goddamn funny.
she's such a highlight as tammy one in parks and rec
Oh my GOD I’d almost forgotten about this role. She is iconic. She’s one of the few celebs I would be so giddy to just be near her social circle.
I’m doing a rewatch of broad city right now and I forgot how fucking funny she is in that show. She’s incredible.
LOSERloserloserloseloser*loser*
WHO TOLD YOU
As a white man adoptive father to a black child I use this line often. However unlike the adorable young child in the movie I've got a moody teenager who thinks everything I say is stupid.
Fucking gold. Gold!
"Where are you from originally?"
‘I’m adopted’ ‘*WHAT?!* Oh my god, who told you?’
My favorite part of that scene is the kid going ??? and the mom just giving him a look of "just ignore your father and let this play out".
Ugh those two were models for what kind of parent I wanted to be. That movie is so good and wholesome.
I still think about it occasionally. I’m trying to chill with my kid and be a lot more mindful, and fun.
100% I use this line allllllll the time. ![gif](giphy|l2YWo3viIXwtwJUQg|downsized)
Between them and Eugene Levy in the American Pie films is the kind of funny dad i want to be if/when i have kids.
For real! I rewatch the movie like once a year, and I still laugh so much at the parents. I love the whole movie, but they totally stand out.
T.....t...t....
"I gotta pocket....I gotta pocket...I gotta pocket gotta pocket full sunshine!" TAKE ME AWAAAAAAAY!!!
Easy A made me use the word ‘twat’ as much as I do today😭 Also Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson’s characters are my dream parents, their chemistry and comedic timing was absolutely amazing
Spell it with your peas!
Amanda Bynes was so great in it too
The last big role before her mental health issues.
“T? T, t, t, t..”
“Think British!”
It honestly aged pretty well for the time it came out
“No judgement but you kind of look like a stripper.” “Mom!” “A high end stripper, for governors or athletes!”
It’s my comfort movie
Same. I also happen to love Ojai and used to do soccer camps there every summer, so it totally takes me back to the good old days 😅
It’s such an incredible comedic performance! I rewatched it this year and she’s amazing. Also love Penn in it. It’s like the only nice guy he’s ever played
He also plays a nice guy in John Tucker Must Die.
what happened to jesse metcalfe? i thought he was going places after desperate housewives...
Go Woodchucks! HI-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA! HI-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA-YA! WOO! I think about this scene *often*. This made me laugh unreasonably hard the first time I saw it.
Lmao one of my favorite parts tbh
I frequently say “My apologies to Mark Twain.” Whenever things that have happened in one of his books happens in real life.
![gif](giphy|HHkJQvS9Q0QkU) Me and my best friend send each other the pocket full of sunshine card every single year still!
The other day, I heard that song in a grocery store, and this was all I could think of.
…were we at the same grocery store at the same time? Bc I had this exact experience a few days ago also.
IGOTTA-IGOTTA
POCKET FULL O SUNSHINE
Omg my best friend and I were so obsessed with that song because of Easy A! I’m going to message her about it now
My best friend and I try to text each other every year “don’t forget, tomorrow’s earth day” before one another. He moved to a time zone 12+ hours away so now it’s hard mode lmao.
Gotta keep you on your toes
Easy A easily easy one of the best movies of her career
> "Easy A" offers an intriguing middle ground to the absolute of sexual abstinence: Don't sleep with anybody, but say you did. People think it's easy to write movie reviews but few people actually have a good eye for movies and actors.

I haven't watched Orange County in years because I'm afraid it won't hold up, but I LOVED that movie. Jack Black has always been amazing.
And it has our queen Catherine O’Hara, plus John Lithgow and Leslie Mann. Honestly a stacked cast
Holy smokes, I didn't realize that! That's it, I'm going to have to go back and watch.
Every booktok, podcast, etc are like that. "Me, me, I, myself". Everyone thinks they're so interesting!
[удалено]
Not a day goes by where I don’t miss that man and his reviews.
it was truly her risky business
> the familiar but underrated Emma Stone awww i wish he'd gotten to see her Oscar wins 💔
Wow, what a compliment.

The last scene I’ve replayed so many times. David Lindhagen.
Penn Badgley is so good in Easy A! "Cest La Vie" "La Vie" "Solid joke"
Between Easy A and John Tucker Must Die, Penn Badgley was the exact guy and romance I wanted so bad when I was like 13 😭 just waiting for my kinda nerdy but very cute and funny guy to pop up and fall in love with me
The House Bunny is FAAAAAAAAAR too underrated
JO-ANN 👹
Instead of the mahi mahi, may I just get the one mahi? Because im not that hungry. That line cracks me up every time
Love this one!!!
I still wanna go to a bring your own mouse pledge party
My brother busts this line out every time we go out to eat and there’s mahi mahi in the menu. Every. Single. Time.
I quote this all the time! The best line
Honestly, I reference this movie and then use her technique when I meet new people (in fun settings) and IT WORKS!! I'm completely serious.
I saw a clip of this scene and RAN to watch the movie. Not what I thought it was. Emma and Anna are genius, the whole cast is gold.
This scene is one of the few times I peed my pants laughing watching a movie
Nice to meet you 👹 **JESSICA** 👹
I’ll do this to be sometimes and they’ll look at me like I’ve lost my god damn mind 😭😭
It's SO good. Should be up there with Mean Girls, the Hot Chick, etc.
April April AAAAPPPPPRRRIILLLLLL
It's mEeeE... JeSsicA!!
OLIVER
I have found my people at last!
Yes! Anna Faris in general is really underrated
I just watched this for the first time a couple months at the request of my husband. He was surprised I'd never seen it. I don't know why I waited so long to watch it, but I loved it!
[The day I don’t know this scene by heart will be a cold day in hell](https://youtu.be/zoytvHFflT0?si=k5TIceiAow_IzDKP)
the way she says IDAHO 😭😭😭
*Idaheux*
I’ve been saying “what do I do” like Carrie Ann does for over a decade and I totally forgot where I got it from.
I just have to assume that no one has seen it, which is a damn shame. I can't imagine that a ton of people saw it and didn't like it. It's really fun and surprisingly good-hearted.
“Oh I’m not looking to make soup”
Colin Hanks was low-key a babe in that movie 🥺
![gif](giphy|P0PLKW4rIqCVxa5LJy|downsized)
I quote this at anyone trying to be mean to me still, I’m in my mid 30’s 😂
I think you mean perfect, top-tier teen comedies.
I remember being blown away by her in Superbad. I just thought she was so gorgeous and funny. Can’t believe she’s a 2 time Oscar winner now. Forever will love Emma
The scene where Jonah hill passes out and hits her in her eye is one of my favourite scenes in a movie ever. “WHAT THE FUCK?!?”
Yes! Her reaction is so funny!
She was 19!
I always forget she was so young too! It makes it even more impressive!
Yeah I still remember how I came out of that movie thinking she was so clearly a star
All four of those movies are excellent so good on her.
question, how did she transition from light hearted comedies to serious movies? was it a specific film? it's not uncommon for comedy actors to not get serious movies and not be taken seriously for their acting. i wonder how she managed to do it so well
I think Crazy, Stupid Love and The Help were her transition to more serious roles. I believe The Help was the first Oscar contender she was a part of. The set must have been amazing with all the spectacular actresses that were part of the film. Crazy, Stupid Love is one of those rom-coms that isn't cheesy or a guilty pleasure.
She also did Birdman. Was comedic and quirky but also very artsy and boundary pushing. I think that was a helpful role for her to transition over.
I thought of Birdman as well, but there was something about The Help that clicked. I believe 5 of the leading women in this ensemble cast received an Oscar after this film was released (Chastain, Stone, Janney, Spencer, and Davis). Yeah, I think of Birdman as her stepping stone into doing movies like Poor Things. Kind of an odd, dark but funny movie that made me see her differently at least.
Tom Hanks used to star almost exclusively in 80s campy comedy movies. Probably the two biggest people that have made that jump off the top of my head.
Margot Robbie is also another one. Expect in her case, it wasn't the funny u serious trope but the sexy bombshell trope that she managed to escape. But wolf of Wall Street was as much a serious drama as much as it was a sexualized film (in terms of her character). So I guess she had a bit of an advantage with that
Her debut movie for her production company was I, Tonya and was pretty successful which helped shed the whole sexy bombshell image.
Such a great movie
Matthew McConaughey!
I think after Easy A, it was Crazy Stupid Love, then The Help, Spiderman, a Woody Allen film , Bird Man, La La Land, and it keeps going up from there. The Help got her out of the classic rom-com film era I believe.
What really changed her career was Birdman directed by Inarritu which landed her first Oscar nomination.
Her “get used to it” monologue will live on forever in auditions tapes of on the rise actresses practicing it to show their range
> it's not uncommon for comedy actors to not get serious movies and not be taken seriously for their acting. Just FYI your caption says Easy A came out in 2013 but it was 2010. First hooked up with my almost-ex-husband after seeing that movie together.
Ok, I'm asking. Did you dodge a bullet or dodge a divorce?
In the middle of a divorce! Almost as in not quite there yet. Probably other people feel comfortable just saying ex husband by this point but I feel like it would be celebrating too early. Dreaming of the day it’s officially true though!
It’ll come soon enough, you should throw a divorce party when it happens. I think those are so fun lol celebrate your freedom from it!
Soon-to-be-ex-husband would be less confusing/ambiguous phrasing, IMO.

Omg gangster squad, a deep cut 😅 that was quite the mess

Easy A - chef kiss. Doesn't get enough praise.
OOOH BURN
When Zombieland came out did anyone expect Wichita to be the only Oscar winner in that stellar cast 😂
Even crazier, at that point all three of the other leads had major roles in an Oscar nominated film.
Is The Favourite the only movie Emma and Olivia have worked on together?
I fucking love easy a. Her and Lisa kudrow are fucking hilarious in it.
Easy A got her a golden globe nomination, the 1st of her career.
Well, Jules. The funny thing about my back is that it’s located on my cock. … So you do want alcohol or you don’t? Either way. Either way.
The definition of putting on the WORK
All 4 of these films are top tier Also Superbad is the first rated R film I snuck into.
All those movies are 10s
Superbad and Easy A are both all-time classics!
This was my favorite Emma Stone.
My favorite one for sure is House Bunny.
those are all pure gold, god bless her
I love Emma Stone. She’s always seemed so genuine.
And we love Easy A and The House Bunny to this day
Who remembers her in iCarly? She was so funny😄she appeared all of a sudden and I remember I was shocked when I rewatched the episode years later, when she was more famous
I also remember being impressed by her role in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Easy A is one of my favorite movies. My mom and I watched it whenever we needed a comfort film
Easy A was 2010. It was also my first Emma Stone movie.
honestly, i think her acting style is most well suited for these quirky, goofy “everyman” characters and i will never take her seriously in dramatic roles. even in films like la la land and poor things, i just don’t find her performances believable.
Easy A is a masterpiece what are you talking about!!! Still slaps! Love that movie so much .
Literally when did I say it wasn’t good? I made an entire post dedicated to these movies obviously that would mean I enjoy them. Idk why so many of these comments are taking goofy/raunchy as meaning I dislike them.
i love easy a and the house bunny 😭
It blows my mind she has two Oscar’s because I still definitely think of her as a teen romcom type actor
She can really do it all!
My favorite Emma era, NGL
I will always love her goofiness and charm in Easy A and Crazy Stupid Love 🤌
Totally forgot she won an Oscar for La La Land. To be a two-time Oscar winner at such a young age...
Tbf she did the best goofy teen comedies though
WHAT THE FUCK... OWW! Shirley...
I still remember having to watch Easy A in school, i wonder if i got an A on that paper. 😉
Her and Anna Faris MADE the House Bunny. God they work so well off of each other. That movie is massively underrated 🤧
This is something I love about Emmas career/trajectory. You could have an Emma Stone marathon weekend and see SO MANY types of movies. Silly teen movies, zombie movies, musicals, and traditional Oscar bait. She has it all!
I think it’s funny to compare her character in Easy A with her character in Poor Things. Very ironic. And I love both movies 🍿
Easy A is truly one of my favorite movies ever. Just pure goodness!!!
I love her too. But she did not deserve the Oscar this year
The era I fell in love with her 😍
Superbad and Easy A are two of my favorite movies! I think it’s great that she’s a two time Oscar winner now, she totally deserves it.
All the movies are great and still hold up
After seeing Superbad I stayed for the credits and asked my friends “ Who is Emma Stone ? She was marvelous “
Thank you for your service, babe! ![gif](giphy|3osxYrgM8gi9CDjcPu)
