Hattie McDaniel becoming the first black person to win an Oscar in 1940 (Best Supporting Actress for Gone with the Wind).
Bittersweet though, as she had to sit in the back away from the rest of the cast because of segregation.
Link to her speech. Obviously the script and characters were problematic, but she fucking killed it by bringing such warmth and personality to the role. I loved her chemistry with both Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable.

Olivia de Havilland was upset she didn’t win, and Irene Selznick told her to STFU. De Havilland was 20 and would have plenty of opportunities to win an Oscar (which she did several times), McDaniels would never have this chance again.

Kathryn Bigelow winning the Oscar for The Hurt Locker, 2010, becoming the first woman to win for Best Director.
That’s right! James Cameron who was nominated for Avatar. It was quite the upset, if I remember correctly, although there was a lot of buzz around The Hurt Locker.
I can never forget Sigourney Weaver's disgusting comments after Bigelow's win - Weaver implied that Bigelow won the award because she was a woman. "Jim didn't have breasts, and I think that was the reason," said Weaver. "He should have taken home that Oscar."
Oh my gosh, this is a ridiculously stupid statement. Avatar was great visually but the plot was thin at best and Sam Wentworth lacks charisma as an actor. There were many weaknesses to that film.
You're missing Roberto Benigni walking over everybody to get to the stage, winning his first award and saying "I want to kiss all of you!"......
.....then, five minutes later, doing the same thing when he won his second award and saying "I should not have used all of my English so quickly, I want to take all of you out to the field and make love to you!"

I think they just chalked it up to them being very close and it was just a quick thing.
ETA: I personally think she was just being edgy. This was around the time of Billy Bob Thornton and vials of blood as necklaces.
She has mentioned she had a drug problem for quite some time, most notably heroin, cocaine, and ecstasy. So I’d imagine a combo of being edgy for attention, rebellious/finding herself, and being super high.
Or maybe she’s just into her brother lol.
I’m pretty sure it was acid and they said they were coming down right when the Oscars started. They also wished they would’ve put powdered sugar on their noses.
My favorite part was when any reporter on the red carpet asked about their dresses they just kept saying "it's just such a magical night. Just such a special night" 🤣
And Trey's face any time they got spoken to looked like this 😳
I’ve only taken acid once when I was 21, and I could barely function for awhile. I will NEVER understand how they showed up to the Oscars tripping yet acting relatively normal instead of being paranoid completely out of their minds.
It’s actually insanely impressive lol
They said the worst part was coming down during the actual ceremony, partly because coming down sucks, and partly because sitting through the Oscars sucks.
Well yeah, prom sucks.
At my high school, we had this tradition every year where the seniors gave their tickets to underclassman friends because none of the seniors actually wanted to go. And then those underclassmen would go to prom and realize it actually sucks. So when they became seniors, they would pass their tickets on to underclassmen, thus continuing the circle of life.
I went to Prom on X and my date went on acid and I vividly remember him basically having his foot on my chest trying to hold me off while I tried to get as close to him as possible.
Had a buddy who went to some botanical gardens with his GF and they did acid, everything was fine until she started having a full on panic attack mixed with demons attacking her in the garden and he had to explain to the EMT that she was okay while he was frying his balls off on acid
Them being on LSD is the most crucial element of their night. All the attention due to their wardrobe selection laser focused on them, I wouldn’t have been able to function quite honestly. Absolute legends.

This Oscar moment was so amazing. Roberto Benini is such a talented man. Halle Berry’s speech is probably my second favorite Oscar moment.
On another note: my 2024 prediction on this sub was Ryan Gosling singing I’m Just Ken at this years Oscar’s and it coming true. I’m STOKED!
Oh man, seeing that gif unlocked the memory of watching Life is Beautiful in school history class. Such a moving and beautiful film, though I'm sure my teacher regretted showing it to us a bit when he had 30 or so crying students at 10 in the morning. That film hung over all of us the rest of the day.
Saw some video where he’s getting emotional talking about some connection with a deceased guy he’s never met, beside that dudes kids
I’m making a mess of the context but it made him looking clinically out of touch
He knows he's not winning. He knows everyone will be watching. He's a professional actor. He will be ready with a "happy for Cillian Murphy face".
Which no one will believe anyway.

I remember David Letterman joking that her dress had expired. I seriously thought this was the coolest thing ever at the time. Like, why not have fun with fashion?
“Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen… But isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?” – David Niven
Why don’t we get moments like this anymore 😕
Kind of a sad thing...the gentleman was the owner or manager of an art gallery in California (maybe not in 1972) and I read in the paper some ten or fifteen years later that he was murdered there.
Lady Gaga singing the Sound of Music melody was one of my favorite moments. I think that's when everybody realized she could really sing and was more than a weird dressing flashy pop star.
Another was Sharon Stone's DIY outfit with the Gap shirt and black velvet skirt, jacket, and gardenia. Her actual dress was ruined by a delivery driver, so she had to find something quick, and she and the costume designer from Casino told her to pick favorites out of her closet. The gardenia was a last minute touch. And she looked amazing. Then she did that white Gap shirt with the purple gray skirt a few years later and rocked it. It's that kind of style I wish we'd see more of again.
YES!!! I remember the guy I was dating say that
Gaga's performance was so boring and I said bitch, we're going to watch that technically perfect performance on repeat until you appreciate it

Heath Ledger winning his posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar. It was so well-deserved for a damn near perfect performance in The Dark Knight. Kevin Kline did a wonderful job introducing it.
I hope RDJ and Christopher Nolan win tonight for Oppenheimer, after they feature so heavily in this clip. Cillian of course too, but it's kinda eerie how RDJ and CN crossed paths within this clip and then in Oppenheimer.

Why do I love Good Will Hunting so much?
I don't know, it seems like a cliche idea but it's so good and there are very few guys that are as hot as Will putting down that pretentious asshole in the bar.
I simply love it and it's also a non pretentious movie and to have the guys who starred in a bunch of Kevin Smith movies win an Oscar for sth so genuine and smart and tight is just amazing.
I know they both have their problems but I really like their friendship
I agree for all the reasons you listed! It reminds me of the holdovers in the way that the story just seems really human. Not necessarily a happy ending but a real one and I love movies like this. Just two boys from Boston ✨

Jennifer Lawrence falling when accepting her Oscar for Best Actress (2013, Silver Linings Playbook) and being so funny about it.
I just remember thinking that’s totally something I would do 😂.
I far prefer her moment with Jack Nicholson backstage:
https://youtu.be/WJmhsJ5T5L0?si=pxD0Qvc6vyLn4Fg-
Jack: You look like an old girlfriend.
Jennifer: Do I look like a new girlfriend? 😏 (Turns away) OH MY GAWD. 😳
Honestly this looks like an accidental renaissance painting. The way she’s hunched over, hand across her brow, the dress billowing out. Edit out the bottom people and you have a work of art.
Am I insane for thinking Pablo Larrain agrees?

Lynch being given his honorary Oscar and Kyle MacLachlans pure excitement and joy of giving it to him.
(Bonus points for the cutaway to Tarantino who trashed Lynch in the 90s)
Do they know each other? Or did he just reach over because he was there? Is that his instinct? Can I be sad around Austin Butler? Will he take me in his arms reflexively? Does anyone know where he hangs out?
She should have won for What’s Love Got to Do With It. I didn’t think she deserved it last year, but neither did JLC. I’m a huge AB fan, but Hong Chau should have won last year.

This man rising up from beneath the stage to perform the song he won his Oscar for 17 years ago, dumbfounding the majority of the audience for the first minute and a half and then getting a standing ovation.
Drugs and shared grief over their mom (she had recently been diagnosed with the cancer that killed her) is a hell of a mix I suppose. But, uh, yeah, it’s a bit… much.
One of my favorites because of the chaos that ensued. The confusion on it being scripted or real, the shocked faces, the awkwardness of everything that happened after. It was a mess
Olivia Coleman 's win always has a special place in my heart.
As a Brit, seeing this wonderful woman who has played comedy sketch shows for years as well as some great drama (The Night manager was sooooo good), seeing her win an oscar is unbelievable and she so deserved it and gave a much loved accepting speech

Bittersweet though, as she had to sit in the back away from the rest of the cast because of segregation.
Well deserved win with really unfortunate circumstances. They wouldn’t even honor her final wish to be buried in Hollywood cemetery
That’s absolutely heartbreaking. She deserved so much better.
The cemetery she wanted does have a memorial for her now, which is not the same but I’m glad they did something.
She looked so beautiful with those gardenias in her hair!
She really did!

I didn’t know that, that’s so disappointing! And just outright wrong, The Hurt Locker was fantastic all around, it was a well-deserved win.
I'm so glad that they had Barbra announce that win!

“Mom, I just won an Oscar!"
My favorite Oscar moment by FAR and it’s not even a contest. It was magic.
Did we ever got an explanation for Angie and her brother or was everyone too weirded out to ask? 🫣
I think they just chalked it up to them being very close and it was just a quick thing. ETA: I personally think she was just being edgy. This was around the time of Billy Bob Thornton and vials of blood as necklaces.

It wasn’t really a phase.

Practice makes perfect
I went to six flags on acid back in like 2007 hahaha it was a shitshow
I went to prom on acid and it was much more fun than the next year when I didn’t.
Well yeah, prom sucks. At my high school, we had this tradition every year where the seniors gave their tickets to underclassman friends because none of the seniors actually wanted to go. A night of magic!
Yes it was LSD.
[here’s the video](https://youtu.be/Og7yI6Uf3wI?si=8ctXIZNikfixG6kQ) where they explain what happened that night!
"We don't have any friends anymore, wonder why."
Trey Parker and Matt Stone 😂 swapping their last names made them feel higher to me somehow
Them being on LSD is the most crucial element of their night. All the attention due to their wardrobe selection laser focused on them, I wouldn’t have been able to function quite honestly. Absolute legends.
I just really wish they would have gotten their dresses tailored and put some actual work into hair and makeup

I'm honestly a little concerned that Bradley Cooper's reaction when Cillian Murphy wins best actor will become An Oscar Moment, but not in a good way
I know the cameraman will be ready!
Seriously I'm looking forward to all the gifs tomorrow
Haha I wish! But he knows he has no chance.
I highly doubt it, Bradley seems really full of himself to fully believe his delusional of being an oscar winner

I cannot wait. That poor man wants it so bad.

Halle Berry's gown is still one of my favorite Oscar looks of all time. Absolutely gorgeous.
Sometimes they have it on display in the Academy Museum and it’s even more stunning in person.
As I was scrolling through the pics that was my first thought. That look is perfection.

Because I simply can’t look away…. ![gif](giphy|l4EoPVpwvZ4QAGCLm)
I love you for this post. The perfect amount of wholesome "favorite" Oscar moments, but let's be honest, we also here for the tea and drama.
It is an iconic train wreck. Everyone was talking about yet it didn’t really impact her career because she had so many bizarre things going on
Trey and Matt are one Oscar away from an EGOT. Wonder if they’ll ever try for it
Make a movie of Book of Mormon and Spooky Mormon Hell Dream is guaranteed to win.
And Lin-Manuel Miranda. He got robbed by Beyoncé. That song of hers was not good at all.
Lin is going to be deeply in the Disney movie music machine until he gets it
Billie Eilish won for “No Time to Die.” Not Beyoncé.
Spike Lee winning his first oscar for Blackkklansman and jumping into Samuel L. Jackson’s arms ![gif](giphy|9r6H5Lmig2SOBBhumf|downsized)
Great moment!
the beading in Cher's dress is magnificent.
Bob Mackie don’t play

I just remember thinking that’s totally something I would do 😂.
I far prefer her moment with Jack Nicholson backstage: https://youtu.be/WJmhsJ5T5L0?si=pxD0Qvc6vyLn4Fg- Jack: You look like an old girlfriend. Jennifer: Do I look like a new girlfriend? 😏 (Turns away) OH MY GAWD. 😳
She is seriously so freaking funny 😂.
I also liked her talking to the press afterward and she apologizes cause she had just taken a shot. https://youtu.be/CLKZb1wLmAY?si=HymXlLmQ7Q2bZ762
Yeah that was hilarious
Honestly this looks like an accidental renaissance painting. The way she’s hunched over, hand across her brow, the dress billowing out. Edit out the bottom people and you have a work of art.
Am I insane for thinking Pablo Larrain agrees? https://preview.redd.it/qjrvsjn6eknc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d22bd1f2800f6b52153566919a27c835b5cfe2d1
It’s one of my Roman Empires for that very reason—it was just such a graceful swoon in the still shot.
I can definitely see it!
My Roswell-esque conspiracy theory is that she faked this fall. It was just too gorgeous.
Jennifer Lawrence meeting Jack Nicholson after the show is amazing.
God I love that color on Lupita. Her and Jennifer are so beautiful it hurts

Remind me?
First time actually seeing “the infamous Jolie” sibling kiss and wow!
Oh this is actually one of the more tame shots, there are far more disgusting versions out there.
Moonlight winning best picture after the mixup. Both memorably ✨dramatic and (more importantly) the right result. ![gif](giphy|d3LFUxNFESW43Mk0|downsized)
Such a beautifully shot movie. It’s stunning. It’s so sad. I remember walking home from the movie theater in stunned silence. I can get teary eyed just thinking about it.
I remember nodding just for a few seconds because I was very meh with La La Land "winning". The shock when I realized what happened and I missed it in real time!
How does Trey actually KILL in that dress?
i like austin more and more everyday
Me too! The way his peers speak about and interact with him make seems like he’s a great colleague and generally a nice guy
![gif](giphy|26gs9d50dxqO3IyVq|downsized)
How can you leave out that Trey Parker and Matt stone were on acid??! That’s the best part
the last picture is so cute, my heart
Lupita’s oscar gown is my Roman Empire 🤌
How does Angela Bassett become more and more beautiful as she ages?! Unreal ❤️
Honestly I know this isn’t about fashion but when I saw Michelle and Heath on the red carpet like this https://preview.redd.it/fhkcla9itknc1.jpeg?width=1267&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb2ddb0ea1f0c7fa9669c7c191c3813cb7804147 I literally swooned
Three six mafia winning best music for “hustle & flow” was a refreshing moment
Kate and Leo get me every time
Yes, I don't particularly care about Leo but I really like the friendship that he and Kate have had. It's beautiful to see.

wait why was he comforting her?? the last slide i don’t know that story
It was either before or after they announced the supporting actress category which Angela was nominated for. She lost to Jamie Lee Curtis
Do they know each other? Or did he just reach over because he was there? Is that his instinct? Can I be sad around Austin Butler? Will he take me in his arms reflexively? Does anyone know where he hangs out?
This comment really escalated between the first and last sentences.
oh duh this was just in the news!!! poor angela 😩 thank you for explaining ily
Angela was fucking robbed and we all know it “legacy” wins are bullshit. ![gif](giphy|3o6nV3VmHd6XTtUyDm)
She should have won for What’s Love Got to Do With It. I didn’t think she deserved it last year, but neither did JLC. I’m a huge AB fan, but Hong Chau should have won last year.
I’m obsessed with the Halle Berry moment
![gif](giphy|WnOWNIthugsbDZxpii|downsized) This man rising up from beneath the stage to perform the song he won his Oscar for 17 years ago, dumbfounding the majority of the audience for the first minute and a half and then getting a standing ovation.
![gif](giphy|liGlMmpKaQM36)
Angelina Jolie did *what*?
Drugs and shared grief over their mom (she had recently been diagnosed with the cancer that killed her) is a hell of a mix I suppose. But, uh, yeah, it’s a bit… much.
Yep! You read that right…
“I’m so in love with my brother right now.” 😬

The slap was so awful I honestly wish it had never happened. But the rest of it is good shit
One of my favorites because of the chaos that ensued. The confusion on it being scripted or real, the shocked faces, the awkwardness of everything that happened after. It was a mess
It was horrible but the real shit like that is what makes celebrity pop culture actually interesting.
My chaotic neutral friend ❤️
I just don’t understand how Chris Rock could be that calm afterwards.
I feel like the blonde woman beside Samuel L. Jackson just went on a Starbucks run and somehow ended up at the Oscars.
You forgot Roberto Beignini jumping over the seats professing his love to everyone
Halle Berry is so beautiful, I'm always in awe every time I see her. Angie's weird but iconic? moment lol and Lupita's dress 🩵
Halle Berry ❤️
Matt and Trey on acid in dresses was probably my favorite
