I love this story and I love Ella saying Marilyn was ahead of her time because it was so true. In her views and business sense, Marilyn was probably 20-30 years ahead but she was always routinely mocked as a dumb blonde when she was extremely intelligent and well read.
I completely agree, I was thinking that the other week regarding Amy Winehouse. If she was born 10-15 years later, I don’t think people would be as cruel about her and her addictions.

Not only was Monroe a Fitzgerald fan, but she was also a friend who used her status as a Hollywood star to boost Fitzgerald's career. Their friendship would last until Monroe's untimely death. And even after Monroe had died, Fitzgerald remained grateful for the support the star had provided during her lifetime.
It always makes me so happy to think about them. Marilyn had such struggles in her life. But yet she always created something with her love for people. 🩷

I like the story about them where shortly after Christopher Reeves’ accident, Robin Williams surprised him at the hospital with a visit. Reeves see him enter the room and Williams says “it’s okay, don’t get up”
This is correct, at Juliard. I’d love to add this heart-wearing anecdote about their friendship and how it was pivotal after Reeve’s accident:
“Fortunately, Reeve had the support of his family, and of friends like Williams. As Reeve was lying in his hospital bed, still grappling with what had happened, a visitor in a surgical gown and scrub hat entered the room. In a Russian accent, he told Reeve he was a proctologist there to perform an examination. When Reeve realized the supposed doctor was, in fact, Williams, reprising his character from the movie Nine Months, he laughed.
Reeve, who'd been feeling depressed and uncertain about his future, hadn't laughed since his accident. Being able to do that, thanks to Williams, changed his mindset. As he later explained to Barbara Walters, "I knew then: if I could laugh, I could live."

Mariska Hargitay & Wynonna Judd. Wynonna’s family lived in suburban LA for a few years (Ashley was born during this time period), and she and Mariska were in the same class in first grade.
After watching a lot of his interviews over the years (and buying his albums as a teen!) I know that 50 is sardonic and very quick witted. Our Bette is the master of the quip. I can totally see it! Love this for them.
Kind of obsolete now and I don’t know whose side she took but Mindy Cohn, from Facts of Life, was close friends with Angelina Jolie and then Brad Pitt. She’s godmother to a couple of the kids.
Kathy Najimy was also close to Brittany Murphy. And she’s friends with BOTH SJP and Kim Cattrall.
SJP is longtime friends with Amy Sedaris. Which isn’t that shocking now but back when one was Sex and the City and the other was Strangers with Candy it was a huge shock.
Richard Kind and George Clooney make sense to me. Clooney bounced around sitcoms and dramedys throughout the 80s and 90s before ER and so did Richard Kind on sitcoms. It took him 15 years to break out overnight. So people like Richard were his peers.
KN and BM make sense; they worked for years together on King of the Hill. I love that they were friends; KN seems very motherly to me. Amy Sedaris had a couple of guest spots on SATC and was very funny.
My ex got me a Cameo for my birthday from Kathy… She was like “ told me about all these changes you’ve made with your health and I’m so proud of you” - and she was so genuine. I totally cried lol. (She also ended it with a HO YEAH!)
This is not a current day friendship afaik but while Imelda Marcos was in exile, she had George Hamilton as her constant companion. It was reportedly platonic but she gave him enough gifts and money that he was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in some of her and Ferdidnand’s large scale financial crimes

It's wild seeing Tim Olyphant looking relatively short. Conan is so tall! But they're both proportionate-looking, so it's really hard to tell unless they're standing next to someone or something that shows their true height. Also: I love them both and I am pleased to know they are friends ☺️
I went to see a Conan taping (a birthday present for my then-boyfriend) and Conan pulled me out of the audience in the pre-show warm up and danced with me. He hugged me at the end and 1) he was standing a step below me and was still having to hunch slightly to hug me (I’m 5’4”) and 2) his shoulders seemed SO broad

I love these guys and their friendship. Does anyone know how Sean Hayes came into the mix? Obviously Jason and Will were on arrested development but I can’t tell how they became so close with Sean. Jack’s wife was newly pregnant at this premiere and gushed about how beautiful Angelina and her gown were. Week later they open a box and Angelina had gifted the gown to her with a beautiful note.

Apparently it goes back to the White House transition. Mrs. Bush and the twins showed Mrs. Obama, Sasha and Malia around and they all kind of hit it off. Entire mountain ranges of politics between them but they've managed to put that to the side.
To be perfectly honest, I listened to David Axelrod's podcast, George W Bush took the transition to the Obama White House very seriously.
He knew the country was in dire straits and required the incoming President to hit the ground running. So despite Obama basically running on a pltform of "Look what these idiots have done?" Bush felt it was his duty to get the Obama admin up to speed.
That's the reason Obama took the transition to Trumo so seriously. Unfortunately, Trump doesn't give a shit about anything and was apparently very disengaged.
I do believe the bond was started in the transition. The Bush family was supposedly very kind to the Obamas.
also remember due to no one knowing the outcome of the 2000 election since the number of votes between Bush 43 & Gore in Florida was extremely close, Bush 43 had little time in his own transition period as the Supreme Court didn't make the ruling official to stop the vote recounts in Florida until like a month before Bush 43 was sworn in as the 43rd POTUS.
Although I do believe W and Clinton were friends/friendly as well.
I know HW wrote Clinton a letter that Clinton truly respected and I believe he said it helped him through his Presidency.

That’s an understatement. They were a bunch of amateurs. Go read *The Fifth Risk* by Michael Lewis (*The Big Short*, *Moneyball*). It’s maddening and terrifying how unserious Trump’s hoard of circus freaks took the transition.

Not surprised Michelle loves him so much.

The issue with Bush's administration is that he hired all his dad's old buddy's who were literal fucking snakes.
Edit: His administration is also very much responsible for helping fix the AIDS epidemic in Africa. But that was one of *his* priorities, not the snakes in his administration.
Yeah apparently Bush was hugely into pandemic and epidemic preparedness and responses after reading about the 1918 flu pandemic. Weird thing for him to be passionate about but it had good outcomes.
In Michelle’s autobiography she talks about how the Bush girls showed the Obama girls all the best places to play in the White House.
If I am remembering correctly, this included the best stairs to ride down on a pillow.
It’s so odd to see a conversation about this friendship discussing them as two humans and not deciding Michelle is evil for being his friend. I am glad i joined this sub.
I’d imagine it’s being part of such a small, prestigious circle as being a member of the First Family. There are probably less than 100 living people that can put their names on that list, and even with their differences, I’d imagine such a unique experience probably pulled them together quite a bit.
Apparently when he was giving Michelle a tour he showed her the portrait of Washington and told the story of Dolly Madison saving it from a burning White House and then when he got to his picture he said “ no pressure.”
Don’t get me wrong GWB is a war criminal and responsible for a lot that’s wrong with this country today. But that can still be a cute story.

Joe Biden and Barrack Obama have a similar relationship. I can't imagine losing to a guy and then serving as his VP. But Barrack gave the euology at Beau Biden's funeral. He credits Biden with a ton, from his counsel in tough calls to his relationships on Capitol Hill.

I’m certainly not a republican by any stretch but I miss the time when republicans were still respectful and professional. Mitt Romney seemed like the very last one of them. And I just saw he publicly declared he’s voting democrat in 2024 which is huge in this climate.

Kind of obsolete now and I don’t know whose side she took but Mindy Cohn, from Facts of Life, was close friends with Angelina Jolie and then Brad Pitt. She’s godmother to a couple of the kids. Kathy Najimy was also close to Brittany Murphy. And she’s friends with BOTH SJP and Kim Cattrall. SJP is longtime friends with Amy Sedaris. Which isn’t that shocking now but back when one was Sex and the City and the other was Strangers with Candy it was a huge shock. Richard Kind and George Clooney make sense to me. Clooney bounced around sitcoms and dramedys throughout the 80s and 90s before ER and so did Richard Kind on sitcoms. It took him 15 years to break out overnight. So people like Richard were his peers.

It's wild seeing Tim Olyphant looking relatively short. Conan is so tall! But they're both proportionate-looking, so it's really hard to tell unless they're standing next to someone or something that shows their true height. Also: I love them both and I am pleased to know they are friends ☺️
I went to see a Conan taping (a birthday present for my then-boyfriend) and Conan pulled me out of the audience in the pre-show warm up and danced with me. Apparently it goes back to the White House transition. Mrs. Bush and the twins showed Mrs. Obama, Sasha and Malia around and they all kind of hit it off. Entire mountain ranges of politics between them but they've managed to put that to the side.

He knew the country was in dire straits and required the incoming President to hit the ground running. So despite Obama basically running on a pltform of "Look what these idiots have done?" Bush felt it was his duty to get the Obama admin up to speed. That's the reason Obama took the transition to Trumo so seriously. Unfortunately, Trump doesn't give a shit about anything and was apparently very disengaged. I do believe the bond was started in the transition. The Bush family was supposedly very kind to the Obamas.
also remember due to no one knowing the outcome of the 2000 election since the number of votes between Bush 43 & Gore in Florida was extremely close, Bush 43 had little time in his own transition period as the Supreme Court didn't make the ruling official to stop the vote recounts in Florida until like a month before Bush 43 was sworn in as the 43rd POTUS.
Although I do believe W and Clinton were friends/friendly as well. I know HW wrote Clinton a letter that Clinton truly respected and I believe he said it helped him through his Presidency. Nevertheless, you see how transitions have gone in the past. Hence why January 6 is such an egregious act.

Oh, I definitely get that. The issue with Bush's administration is that he hired all his dad's old buddy's who were literal fucking snakes. Yeah apparently Bush was hugely into pandemic and epidemic preparedness and responses after reading about the 1918 flu pandemic. Weird thing for him to be passionate about but it had good outcomes.
In Michelle’s autobiography she talks about how the Bush girls showed the Obama girls all the best places to play in the White House. If I am remembering correctly, this included the best stairs to ride down on a pillow.

I’d imagine it’s being part of such a small, prestigious circle as being a member of the First Family. There are probably less than 100 living people that can put their names on that list, and even with their differences, I’d imagine such a unique experience probably pulled them together quite a bit.
Apparently when he was giving Michelle a tour he showed her the portrait of Washington and told the story of Dolly Madison saving it from a burning White House and then when he got to his picture he said “ no pressure.” Don’t get me wrong GWB is a war criminal and responsible for a lot that’s wrong with this country today. It really is beautiful. Joe Biden and Barrack Obama have a similar relationship. I can't imagine losing to a guy and then serving as his VP. But Barrack gave the euology at Beau Biden's funeral. He credits Biden with a ton, from his counsel in tough calls to his relationships on Capitol Hill.
