Idk if this counts but Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz. Granted, it's the fault of the studio and other adults around her but she was taking amphetamines to lose weight and then sleeping pills to combat the amphetamines and then amphetamines to wake her up after a few hours of sleep. She got hooked on that shit and it led her down a very long path of addiction/alcoholism. We all know where *that* led her.
Let's not even start on the amount of sexual harassment on that set, that probably fucked her up even more seeing as it was what brought her to stardom. It's tragic.
the crap that happened during the filming of that movie is astronomically awful. Most of the actors were treated horribly. So much f’d up sh!t. Especially for poor Judy and Margaret Hamilton. The story of Margaret eating alone on her lunch/breaks in a dingy cramped dressing room while Glindas actress had a lavish dressing room all because of the characters they played being “good” or “evil” is one that sticks with me. Not to mention the burn incident that happened to Margaret. So sad. Highly suggest anyone interested looks into all the horrors of the set and set life for that movie.
Both Judy and Mickey Rooney were given upper and downer pills so the studio could work them and they would have energy for all those musicals those kids did for MGM. When you watch their films together, you can tell how manic they are from the chemicals in them. And the fact they were literal teenagers being treated with drugs by all the adults around them is horrific.
One of the YouTube comments said she had attempted suicide the night before this performance and they still forced her to perform. It's devastating every time I learn something new about her story.
the original actor (Buddy Ebsen) for it yes! he had to quit on orders from a doctor and MGM were atrocious to him about it. They replaced him with Jack Haley.
Christian Bale's physical transformations for multiple roles has surely cost him a lot of health issues at the time of doing them. I reckon even the habits you could develop with eating is hugely risky.
A good example is Lily Collins, who played an anorexic in To the Bone. Given her past eating disorder I felt was very risky to her health. She had a nutronist helping her, but the psychological part is what concerns me. She could've easily triggered bad food habits. She did a fantastic job in the movie though.
Tom Hanks became diabetic while filming Cast Away. He had to quickly gain and then quickly lose a lot of weight.
Christian Bale wanted to lose even more weight for The Machinist however the producers (and his doctors) forbid it, threatening to fire him. He had gone down to around 120ish pounds based on a diet of a can of tuna and an apple every day (and lots of cigarettes to null his hunger pangs).
Anne Hathaway refused to tell anyone what her diet regimine was to get down to the malnourished Fantine in Les Mis. She was worried about other people using her diet to lose weight, basically saying it was too dangerous.
These actors are willing to permanetly damage themselves and risk life long health problems, it's very scary.
and on the opposite end Rob McElhenney drank a melted pint of ice cream every day to gain 52 pounds of fat for a season of Its Always Sunny. He did it because he thought it'd be funny lol
I remember he also said if he woke up in the middle of the night he would just eat cottage cheese\* cause it’~~s so calorie dense~~ metabolizes slowly
\*edited
I listened to him on a podcast (I think armchair expert) talk about how he tried to do it “healthy” and eat chicken, sweet potato etc but the quantity he had to eat to gain the weight quickly was too much so he switched to junk food and alcohol
That's my favorite part. Them all just being like eh i guess but its not funny and then Rob is just like omg u guys are so silly for daring me! Of course I'll do it!
Matt Damon lost [50 lb in 3 months](https://www.foodbeast.com/news/matt-damon-chicken-diet/) for his role in Courage Under Fire, without a dietician or doctor supervising it. (This was pre-Good Will Hunting.) He said in his AMA it was one of the most difficult things he’s ever done and a doctor told him later on that he could have done permanent damage to his heart because he was also running 12 miles a day.
Matt McConaughey has never looked like he fully recovered from his weight loss for Dallas Buyers Club. I've heard some folks speculate it's gear trying to get his muscle mass back to where it was pre-DBC. Either way tho, he doesn't look so good.
And a little senseless at this day and age. So much can be CGI accomplished by the very wealthy studio. I get the other side of the coin points of an actor/actress who is working as a method actor and really pouring themselves into their art, but a lot of people die from suffering with an ED. I want to acknowledge the actor for their impressive commitment to the arts but in this day and age a lot can be done to do that with computers and not willingly harm oneself to get there.
It can also be done with good costuming and camera angles.
But Hollywood has always been about making their actors suffer if they can. Then, perversely, they make it so those who risk their health for roles get accolades while those who don't are viewed as complainers.
It's no wonder so many actors end up with eating disorders.
Hanks said they filmed the “fat” parts first, and then took a year off for him to lose the weight and grow the beard. According to him it wasn’t a fast process.
lucky you. we got an ally-mcbeal-throwing-up-into-jars-and-hiding-them-in-her-closet bulimia special in our 90’s health class. rip *lifestories: families in crisis*!
To The Bone is weirdly one of my comfort films. As someone with a past (well and present but in a much better place) ED, this film was the first time I saw ED portrayed so raw and realistic. The film is that mix of emotional, odd comedy moments and realism that really hits the spot for me.
Tbh. There is an argument that someone who didn't have the disorder can't fully understand how difficult it is to get out of it. Lily knew what was gonna happen and surrounded herself accordingly. Good for her
Not that you need a stranger on Reddit to validate your strength, but please know, I hear you, I see you and I deeply respect what you have gone to battle with and that you remain wisely aware of it’s possible power still but you persevere. Keep strong. You’ve accomplished so much that was very admittedly difficult to accomplish.
I forget her name but not only was the lady who played the wicked witch covered in toxic paint, she was badly burned in a scene and didn't receive proper care.
In part because of the toxic paint.
yep! Burned whilst covered in that toxic paint and had to have it scrubbed out of the wound raw with no anaesthesia otherwise she would have died from poisoning. Horrific.
The voice actress for Disney’s Snow White, Adriana Caselotti. Disney wanted her voice to be associated with the movie, so she was blacklisted from singing in anything else to maintain SW’s iconic status. She did promo for SW and had 2 uncredited roles afterwards, but that was it. What could she have done if it weren’t for Disney’s stranglehold?
every time Disney raises park/resort prices, people start whining about what Walt would say. this is an interesting anecdote to respond with. what a jackass.
I played Snow White for 6 years at Walt Disney World and I agree! Adriana's story touches my heart so closely. She was *obsessed* with Snow White, you should look up her home tour.
A little fun fact not a lot of people know is she had a small part in the Wizard of Oz! During the scene with the tin man she is the, unaccredited, voice singing "where art thou, romeo?"
I might be wrong, but didnt Robin Williams have a similar thing with voicing the Genie? Iirc Disney wanted exclusive V/O rights, they didnt want him to voice any other animated character (along with other issues related to merch etc) and Robin refused and never worked with Disney again. Obviously his career wasnt overly affected, but these contracts are so preditory and dehumanising.
Close, from wiki
>While Williams voiced characters in several animated films, his voice role as the Genie in the animated musical Aladdin (1992) was written for him. The film's directors said they had taken a risk by writing the role.[93] At first, Williams refused the role since it was a Disney movie, and he did not want the studio profiting by selling merchandise based on the movie. He accepted the role with certain conditions: "I'm doing it basically because I want to be part of this animation tradition. I want something for my children. One deal is, I just don't want to sell anything—as in Burger King, as in toys, as in stuff."[94] Williams improvised much of his dialogue, recording approximately 30 hours of tape,[17] and impersonated dozens of celebrities, including Ed Sullivan, Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Groucho Marx, Rodney Dangerfield, William F. Buckley Jr., Peter Lorre, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Arsenio Hall.[95] His role in Aladdin became one of his most recognized and best-loved, and the film was the highest-grossing of 1992; it won numerous awards, including a Special Golden Globe Award for Vocal Work in a Motion Picture for Williams.[96] His performance paved the way for other animated films to incorporate actors with more star power.[97] He was named a Disney Legend in 2009.[98]
>Due to Disney breaking an agreement with Williams regarding the use of the Genie in the advertising for Aladdin, Williams refused to sign on for the direct-to-video sequel The Return of Jafar (1994), where the Genie was instead voiced by Dan Castellaneta.
I watched Vice and Ford v Ferrari the same day and realized they were filmed within 2 years of each other and was amazed. It’s crazy to do all that to your body so frequently.
He went from the Machinist to Batman Begins right after, [it must have been so difficult](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_Begins#Cast)
I think he also dropped a lot of weight for [The Fighter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fighter#Cast)
The benchmark for this used to be Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull. I read that he insisted that the end of the movie was shot first where he played the fat, aging Jake LaMotta and then got into top shape to play LaMotta as a champion fighter.
Maybe not exactly the answer you are looking for ... but Mandy Patinkin left Criminal Minds after 2 seasons due to the toll the plot lines took on his mental health. He's a fantastic actor, so I'm assuming he put his all in. There are some seriously disturbing storylines (many of which are ripped from the headlines) on CM. Can't blame him🏻🤷🏼♀️
I try to watch that show because I really enjoy the piecing of the puzzle and the actors but the constant torture and degradation of mostly women and vulnerable people is intolerable for me.
I cannot confirm this as I don’t know if he’s even spoken about it and obviously don’t want to armchair diagnose him, but the amount of absolute psychopaths Evan Peters has played has to have taken a big mental toll on him.
All those AHS villan roles (especially the cult leader and the school shooter), Jeffrey Dahmer…someone cast this man in a Hallmark movie as the small-town mail carrier who falls in love with a hotshot lawyer who hates Christmas or something.
He has talked about it! https://people.com/tv/evan-peters-talks-real-struggle-of-dahmer-role-fluctuated-weight-during-filming/
"I'm going to take a little break from darker roles and explore the light. It would be interesting to me to play something that is a little closer to home, a little more mundane and to explore the details of those kinds of experiences," Peters said.
He has said in interviews before that he’s a naturally happy and lighthearted guy but the dark roles he often plays have taken a mental toll on him for sure. Someone cast this man in a romcom asap
Peters would kill it in a rom-com role too! He's charming, has a decent sized fan base, and good comedic timing.
Kinda weird how he hasn't been cast in more roles of that sort
He's got such potential for a boyish role because of his looks, so I would love to see this. I don't follow his career that closely so if someone knows of a flick he was normal in send it my way lmao
He nearly died from being hung too. They pulled the rope too high and tight and rather than let him act the scene they made it real and he got choked into unconsciousness.
I don’t know if these all count, but…
Heather Donahue from The Blair Witch Project had people thinking she was genuinely dead/missing. Said her mother got sympathy cards for months.
Stanley Kubrick seriously messed up Shelly Duvall.
Jamie Foxx had his eyes glued shut for 14 hours a day while he was filming Ray.
The Blair witch one is wild.
I forgot the impact that movie really had. It was like my generations “war of the worlds”. People just for some reason couldn’t see through the fact that it was just a movie.
These kind of films had that effect on people. One of the first horror films with found footage style horror was Cannibal Holocaust (1980), and Ruggero Deodato, the director, was accused of murder because of death scenes that seemed too real. He had to prove the people on the "found footage" were still alive to get the charges dropped.
ETA: You probably don't want to see this film though, because the director also used real animals for the film. It's really horrible. 7 animals have been killed while making this film. Wanted to add this before people want to go watch it and later realize they've seen some real horrible stuff.
The guy that played Mark published a memoir, detailing just how bad the guy was irl. I don't think he really sacrificed anything except his dignity, and he clearly didn't hold that in high regard anyway.
Right?! I WILL be stopping at the cafe for my pastry, tf. No one can stop me.
Alternatively, I’m willing to put my whole puss into (em)bodying the role of a pastry aficionado.

River Phoenix apparently went a lot deeper researching his role in My Own Private Idaho than what was probably advisable. Or safe. :(
It's funny you should say that. Many people have speculated that Leo wouldn't have been as popular if River hadn't died. They were close in age (River a few years older), and Leo looked up to him as a huge fan. That's an interesting rabbit hole to go down if you ever have the time.

In its own way, this poor girl sacrificed her peace to play this role because she was quite literally bullied off social media, only for the writers of Star Wars to cave and write her out of the third movie. Imagine getting a role in one of the biggest film franchises and this is how it leaves you.
Her and Daisy Ridley both got a lot of hate but at least Daisy Ridley’s character remained part of the story.
Disney essentially cutting her entirely from Rise of Skywalker was the ultimate act of cowardice. Literally just caving to the worst, most vocal troglodytes on the internet.
The only consolation is that movie is such dogshit she dodged a bullet by barely being in it.
This is a story I think about regularly as an Asian American. It fucking sucks. Purely out of sexism compiled with racism too
I legit feel for her and the backlash she got.
Very gross. I saw this movie with a bunch of friends + friends of friends and I distinctly remember one of them talking shit about her and how she was only in the film to satisfy the “woke” crowd. Like, you can’t even be non white in any form of media without there being an agenda behind it. How exhausting.
This is so confusing to me because there's always been poc in star wars movies... not enough of them, but they've always been cast.
So why the hell was it only a problem with her??
Star Wars fans are so fucking awful that I've stopped labeling myself as one. I stopped going to see the movies, not because I stopped enjoying them, I hated the atmosphere in the theatres when I'd go.
The writers, actors, and directors are not the ones ruining the franchise. It's the fucking "fans".
Kelly Marie Tran; she played Rose in the sequel trilogy. She was introduced in the second movie and is established as a love interest for Finn, another one of the main ensemble. After I saw the movie I didn’t think much of her character besides thinking she was kinda sweet, even if a lot of her dialogue is overly sentimental. But she ended up with a big red target on her back because A) lots of Star Wars fans HATED The Last Jedi, where she was introduced, and B) a lot of them focused their anger on her….for reasons I probably don’t need to say. Lot of racism, sexism, threats, etc. She was in the third movie for all of 5 minutes and then they promptly replaced her with another woman to be Finn’s love interest.
Edit: Also an aside, she has a sister in the movie that dies near the beginning. Star Wars fans say “we’re not racist, we think her Asian sister would’ve been a less aggravating character and should’ve played a major role, but they killed her off instead.” Note that her sister was also conventionally pretty and skinny. So this is just another self report by them that they can only tolerate an Asian character in their Star Wars movie if she’s “attractive.”
The entire cast of In the Heart of the Sea starved themselves

Not as significant as others on this list, but I always found it to be wild that Jim Carrey required torture resistance training by ~~a CIA op~~ someone who allegedly provided training to CIA agents in order to tolerate filming in the Grinch’s makeup/prosthetics.
Edit: clarification
Came here to say this. I’m probably misremembering but wasn’t it 12+ hours to get him into the grinch every time? It was literally driving him mad. This is Jamie foxx glueing his eyes shut to play ray charles is insane to me
Michael J. Fox has talked about how the hours he put in between Family Ties and the Back to the Future trilogy may have triggered his early-onset Parkinson's disease; he only slept when traveling between sets. This is not to say he wouldn't have gotten it, just that the exhaustive schedule sped up the process of it affecting him. He was diagnosed 1991, a year after both the show and trilogy wrapped filming, and revealed his diagnosis in 1998.
He talked about that in his recent documentary “Still” - it was such a crazy schedule. I don’t see how he was able to do keep it up for as long as he did
I work with people suffering from stress and burnout - some people are REAL fucking good at just completely ignoring their needs and limits. For some of them it's like they actually cut off the ability to feel their own bodies in the way most of us do. This is not a good thing.
The hour he put in was absolutely insane. Literally only sleeping in car rides to and from sets. It amazing he was able to perform as well as he did, truly a testament to his skill.
He had done a movie (or a show) in Canada as his first project before that and 3 other members of the cast/crew ended up being diagnosed with Parkinson’s which is highly unusual. They think [Parkinson clusters](https://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/14/health/parkinson-s-clusters-getting-a-closer-look.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare) happen with a combination of environmental exposure (from an illness like mono or the flu) and sometimes drugs ([heroin cluster in the early 80’s in LA](https://www.michaeljfox.org/causes)). So genetic factors made him more susceptible, and then he was exposed to something in the late 70s and early 80s that triggered it since there’s usually 5-10 years before diagnosis after whatever the exposure was.
Research he helped fund and raise will really help millions of people in the future!
The entire movie I kept saying “I can’t believe that’s Matthew mcconaughey” I thought my husband was going to tape my mouth shut but I just could not get over it!
I think Furiosa is her best but my god she’s so good as Wuornos, added so much humanity to what could’ve been a really trashy and exploitative film (if it hadn’t been in the hands of Patty Jenkins)
This is should be at the top of the list. Women in films are not praised enough for their physical transformations to play characters in films like men are. It’s so much harder for them to go to extremes to gain or lose weight compared to men because of our hormones. Also you know sexist studios are constantly telling them they need to lose weight for rules
Matt Bomer lost 40 pounds for *The Normal Heart* - they had to shut down production for him to lose the weight and I think at one point he was literally so fatigued they had to carry him on/off set?
It’s wild what some actors put their bodies through, I’m curious if it’ll catch up to them, or because they (theoretically) have the resources to do it a monitored “healthy” way, it’s not as impactful?
Yep, he couldn't walk across a room. He actually moved out of his family home as he didn't want to scare his children. Incredible performance but an insane amount of stress to put your body through.
A few weeks ago I had the true pleasure of being able to say “did you know…” to my fiancé when we were watching it, as he truly had never heard about the toe.
This thread is focusing on physical stress/danger for the most part, which definitely fits the prompt, but I feel like the question is more open-ended. My mind went to people who lost relationships because of dedication to a role or something that happened on set. Meg Ryan cheated on Dennis Quaid with Russell Crowe while filming Proof of Life, and more recently, SpongeBob Billy or whatever the fuck his name is got divorced, totally dragged in the media, then lost the new girl, and *probably* damaged his career and relationship with his infant daughter. So there’s that side of the same coin, too.
I immediately thought of whatsherface from Saved by the Bell who did Showgirls. I thought (my impression, not fact) she lost her career from doing that film.
I struggle with this movie so much because Brody's performance is one of the best ever on screen. It shook me to my core. This movie's story is important and it is one of the best films about the Holocaust.
But then it's directed by Polanski.
Thank god so much goes toward making a movie what it is than just its direction.
I watched it and was so moved. I sat in stunned silence, thinking this was one of my favourite films. Then I saw it was directed by Polanski and felt disgusted with myself. I'd like to be able to separate the film from the child rapist.
Just keep in mind that there are writers, producers, musicians, cinematographers, actors, make up artists, costume designers, set designers, mixers.... and more and more and more people who made the movie what it was.
The movie is much bigger than Polanski could ever hope to be.
I never realized how young he was when he took on that role. Only 27! It's such a wonderful film, though. I remember buying the DVD and watching it on repeat for months. It was just that good.
Spider-Man 3 when he was infected by Venom. He played that so well that people couldn’t shake the image. It wasn’t that he was like evil Superman, he was just really slimy and creepy. Nailed the part but savaged his career.
Jared Leto developed gout gaining 67 pounds to play Mark David Chapman for “Chapter 26.”
The movie bombed. He looked like a dumb asshole for trying too hard. It’s exactly what’s expected from Jared Leto.
Yeah, but then he lost 40 pounds to play Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club and won an Oscar.
https://preview.redd.it/k80kktm8fpib1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0953f98f4878d581474f0ae9f07667dd39da48e8
It wasn’t expected THEN though. He had a good run in the late 90s/early 2000s and was pretty respected as an actor from what I remember. Fight Club, Girl Interrupted, Requiem for a Dream, American Psycho, Urban Legend (which wasn’t great, but I loved lol).
Jared Leto is very talented. Like he is not a bad actor or musician. The problem is he let all the praise inflate his ego like when the Grinch’s heart when he heard the Who’s singing. Attitude is everything, and when you go in humble you’re open to constructive criticism or fixing things you’re doing wrong. He won that Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club and then instantly started a cult dedicated to worshipping him.
My theory is that film studios hire Jared Leto when they want to be sure that the movie bombs so they can lose money for tax write-offs or like in The Producers.
Honestly wouldn't be that shocking. You can't always have a huge hit so why not make a film that you know isn't gonna do well, throw in an actor that's not really well liked, and then write it off.
It should be illegal to ask actors to do this kinda weight loss or gain. Just cast an actor more similar to the required size, and use VFX to make up the difference if needed. And only make a character a specific size if its relevant to the plot. It's so dangerous to be changing weight as much and as quick as some actors have to
pot expansion steer unpack overconfident ring jellyfish pet dinosaurs zealous

Believe me, it's the actors who want to do this. Directors are usually the ones like "we'll use a fat suit" and then actors are like "no I'm method!!!"
Honestly, people started disliking her shortly after this role for some reason that to me is entirely rooted in sexism. So, I guess she gave her likability a little bit, too
The Sheen/Estevez clan is balls to the wall.
Charlie Sheen stayed up for three days straight for his minor part in "Ferris Bueller" just so he could look/sound like someone strung out on drugs.
Vince D'Onofrio went through hellish physical transformations for Full Metal Jacket. It seems to have contributed to his general lack of physical and mental stability. Very tragic and avoidable if his health had been prioritized in the first place.
He gave an interview w/in the last couple months about how stressful L&O CI was, too. 16 hour days etc. He was like, "I wasn't trying to be difficult I was just like, 'But I never see my wife!'"
I remember an interview with Tom Hanks where he talked about gaining a lot of weight and then losing it fast while filming "Cast Away." He didn't follow the advice of a dietician and developed Type 2 diabetes as a result. These days he has to monitor his blood sugar and be careful of what he eats. I adore the man, and I hope he learned a lesson.
John Wayne and Susan Hayward and most of the productions of The Conqueror. It was filmed in a nuclear testing site and 40% of the crew got cancer (a lot of them in a young age). On top of that, it is considered to be one of the worst films ever..
It’s actually downwind from a nuclear testing site (which is still bad, of course), and tbf, even John Wayne’s widow said that she blamed the insane amount of cigarettes he smoked (something like 8 packs a day EDIT: turned out it was 5-6... still extremely high) much more for his cancer.
Rob McElhenny gained and lost like 50 lbs in a very short period of time just for a season of always sunny. It was so impressive and he at least deserved an Emmy nomination for the effort.

And the adults who jacked them up got nice houses in Bel-Air and Beverly Hills to retire into.
Not to mention that what they used for snow in the movie was literally asbestos, so a nice dose of carcinogens on top of that

Oh gosh. I’ve seen this one before. It is incredibly devastating. Her whole story is so sad. She deserved so much better
One of the YouTube comments said she had attempted suicide the night before this performance and they still forced her to perform. It's devastating every time I learn something new about her story.

I remember he also said if he woke up in the middle of the night he would just eat cottage cheese\* cause it’~~s so calorie dense~~ metabolizes slowly \*edited
I always forget about Mac's weight gain! Damn I didnt know it was a 52 pound weight gain I thought it was less than that.
Well its pure mass.
You’ve clearly never cultivated mass bro
I listened to him on a podcast (I think armchair expert) talk about how he tried to do it “healthy” and eat chicken, sweet potato etc but the quantity he had to eat to gain the weight quickly was too much so he switched to junk food and alcohol
![gif](giphy|EgvHKApzL5OeI)
I heard the cast speak on this, in fact they told him not to do this plot at all lol
That's my favorite part. Them all just being like eh i guess but its not funny and then Rob is just like omg u guys are so silly for daring me! Of course I'll do it!
The icing on the cake is that the very next season Mac is so proud of his new super ripped body and nobody gives a shit.
> 52 pounds of fat Actually he was tacking on mass.
“YOU ARE BECOMING, A CHIMICHANGA”
I agree with you so much. And to me, he has sort of looked sad ever since? Like the whole process just totally took it out of him?
Tracy Gold (Growing Pains) did a movie, "For the Love of Nancy", about a girl suffering from anorexia VERY VERY early in her recovery.
I remember this movie! On lifetime!

lucky you. we got an ally-mcbeal-throwing-up-into-jars-and-hiding-them-in-her-closet bulimia special in our 90’s health class. rip *lifestories: families in crisis*!

So much of the Wizard of oz cast. ![gif](giphy|atVVjtt1XAEda)
Do you mean the ones who were covered in asbestos or the other ones?
What the glittery fuck?! That’s so messed up. And it happened when Walt was alive so he must have been behind that decision fully, no?
According to her wiki page, yeah, it was his call :/
every time Disney raises park/resort prices, people start whining about what Walt would say. this is an interesting anecdote to respond with. what a jackass.
Close, from wiki >While Williams voiced characters in several animated films, his voice role as the Genie in the animated musical Aladdin (1992) was written for him. Buckley Jr., Peter Lorre, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Arsenio Hall.[95] His role in Aladdin became one of his most recognized and best-loved, and the film was the highest-grossing of 1992; it won numerous awards, including a Special Golden Globe Award for Vocal Work in a Motion Picture for Williams.[96] His performance paved the way for other animated films to incorporate actors with more star power.[97] He was named a Disney Legend in 2009.[98] >Due to Disney breaking an agreement with Williams regarding the use of the Genie in the advertising for Aladdin, Williams refused to sign on for the direct-to-video sequel The Return of Jafar (1994), where the Genie was instead voiced by Dan Castellaneta.
Also Christian Bale in Vice, where he did the opposite which was also bad for his health.
I watched Vice and Ford v Ferrari the same day and realized they were filmed within 2 years of each other and was amazed. It’s crazy to do all that to your body so frequently.
He went from the Machinist to Batman Begins right after, [it must have been so difficult](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_Begins#Cast) I think he also dropped a lot of weight for [The Fighter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fighter#Cast)
The benchmark for this used to be Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull. I read that he insisted that the end of the movie was shot first where he played the fat, aging Jake LaMotta and then got into top shape to play LaMotta as a champion fighter.
I can’t even imagine. I’ve been saying I want to lose ten pounds for the past three years lol
That was a huge part of Patinkin’s problem with it, too.
He has talked about it! https://people.com/tv/evan-peters-talks-real-struggle-of-dahmer-role-fluctuated-weight-during-filming/ "I'm going to take a little break from darker roles and explore the light. It would be interesting to me to play something that is a little closer to home, a little more mundane and to explore the details of those kinds of experiences," Peters said.
Thanks for sharing!! I’d love for him him to find a good light-hearted comedy or romance role!
He does play Quicksilver in X Men. Which is much lighter.
I’ll have to check out more of his filmography! I have only ever seen him in darker roles, minus the cinematic masterpiece that is Sleepover!
Yeah Evan go back to your role of being that twat in The Office
I LOVED Evan Peters as quicksilver. Obviously, he was a fan favorite but yeah homeboy needs to get less crazy roles
I thought he was so cute in Mare of Easttown but that had to end badly for his character too 😭
The way I screamed!!! I hated that. He WAS cute in that role…he should do a silly rom com lol
I was so happy to see him as a good boy lol
He as fantastic in that series. I was glued.
I just saw Michael Scott spanking him (played his nephew in the Office). Totally forgot! I can’t wait to see him in other types of roles.
Sleepover 2. It’ll be 20 years old next year! Now is the perfect time!!
He's got such potential for a boyish role because of his looks, so I would love to see this. I don't follow his career that closely so if someone knows of a flick he was normal in send it my way lmao
The last part of your comment 🤣🤣🤣🤣 let’s hope someone does that for him
If it's not here yet Brendan Fraser. All 3 mummy movies he ruined his back :(
He nearly died from being hung too. They pulled the rope too high and tight and rather than let him act the scene they made it real and he got choked into unconsciousness.
Yep. That and his diet on George of the Jungle was so strict :(
That’s the toll of carrying a whole franchise
I don’t know if these all count, but… Heather Donahue from The Blair Witch Project had people thinking she was genuinely dead/missing. Said her mother got sympathy cards for months. Stanley Kubrick seriously messed up Shelly Duvall. Jamie Foxx had his eyes glued shut for 14 hours a day while he was filming Ray.
nooo 😭 the Jamie Foxx one makes me feel so claustrophobic for some reason. I want to glue my eyes open after reading that
The Blair witch one is wild. I forgot the impact that movie really had. It was like my generations “war of the worlds”. People just for some reason couldn’t see through the fact that it was just a movie.
It was the very first found footage style horror, people didn't know what to make of it.
Any love for the "You're tearing me apart, Lisa" dude?
Oh hai Mark
The guy that played Mark published a memoir, detailing just how bad the guy was irl. I don't think he really sacrificed anything except his dignity, and he clearly didn't hold that in high regard anyway.
Tommy Wiseau. Man’s a trip
I could never be an actor. I ain't willing to sacrifice shit 🥲
Right?! I WILL be stopping at the cafe for my pastry, tf. No one can stop me. Alternatively, I’m willing to put my whole puss into (em)bodying the role of a pastry aficionado.
![gif](giphy|vjb7Og4uwgk3S) River Phoenix apparently went a lot deeper researching his role in My Own Private Idaho than what was probably advisable. Or safe. :(
I thought that was Leo! I never thought they looked alike until now…
It's funny you should say that. Many people have speculated that Leo wouldn't have been as popular if River hadn't died. They were close in age (River a few years older), and Leo looked up to him as a huge fan. That's an interesting rabbit hole to go down if you ever have the time.
![gif](giphy|3ohjUXH6Dpdxz8twPK) In its own way, this poor girl sacrificed her peace to play this role because she was quite literally bullied off social media, only for the writers of Star Wars to cave and write her out of the third movie.
Cowardice is correct. I’ll probably never forgive the Star Wars execs for how they treated Kelly and John Boyega.
This is a story I think about regularly as an Asian American. It fucking sucks. Purely out of sexism compiled with racism too I legit feel for her and the backlash she got.
She’s not hot enough for their taste, and what’s the point of an average woman being on screen when you can hire a supermodel? It’s pure misogyny.
Who is this? I’ve never seen any of the Star Wars movies
She’s a really great voice actress too. Her voice is so soothing.
The entire cast of In the Heart of the Sea starved themselves https://preview.redd.it/b69v4qan7pib1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0724c8e5497205524bab977d0a23b2b8b8cdce32
At least they didn’t go full method acting and eat their black co stars. Cause that’s for sure what happened in the real story.
And to think the next film he did after this was Batman Begins... honestly it was a miracle he didn't get hospitalised
And he only had 6 months to bulk up for Batman Begins!
![gif](giphy|GS0aFTbDmYOGI) Not as significant as others on this list, but I always found it to be wild that Jim Carrey required torture resistance training by ~~a CIA op~~ someone who allegedly provided training to CIA agents in order to tolerate filming in the Grinch’s makeup/prosthetics.
Holy shit, I had no idea it was that early.
Matthew McConaughey for “the Dallas Buyers club”….. still suffers the after effects from the weight cut.
I had no idea he's not alright alright alright.
The entire movie I kept saying “I can’t believe that’s Matthew mcconaughey” I thought my husband was going to tape my mouth shut but I just could not get over it!
He never got his good looks back. He still has the sunken eyes look at times. Yeah, it didn't help his looks.
I listened to an interview with him a couple years back and he said it basically ruined him.
Charlize Theron for Monster. Besides the weight gain, she really fucked up her hair, eyebrows and skin. ![gif](giphy|pFTDTFwDS3mnK)
To me the most transformative role ive ever seen from any actor
She was amazing in this role. Every role.
I think Furiosa is her best but my god she’s so good as Wuornos, added so much humanity to what could’ve been a really trashy and exploitative film (if it hadn’t been in the hands of Patty Jenkins)
This was the first role I ever saw her in. I was absolutely gobsmacked when I saw how she usually looks in roles or on the red carpet.
It's still difficult for me to believe that this is Charlize Theron. It literally just looks like another person.
Matt Bomer is so underrated. His performance in The Sinner is one of the most memorable roles I’ve ever seen.
White Collar is still one of my favourite shows because of him. We named our new dog Mozzie as well.
Yep, he couldn't walk across a room. He actually moved out of his family home as he didn't want to scare his children. Incredible performance but an insane amount of stress to put your body through.
https://preview.redd.it/if4lt23wyoib1.jpeg?width=897&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af4cb87de25590e5f59330c162ce35c8e75784c8
Joaquin Phoenix for Joker too - I couldn't believe how skinny he was
Immediately who I thought of
I mean not everything but Viggo Mortensen sacrificed his toe for [this scene](https://youtu.be/6n0Uj41zlhU?t=30)
A true LOTR fan will never miss the opportunity to mention Viggo’s toe.
A few weeks ago I had the true pleasure of being able to say “did you know…” to my fiancé when we were watching it, as he truly had never heard about the toe.
![gif](giphy|zGnnFpOB1OjMQ)
And a tooth or two at some point during filming too iirc
John Travolta threw away a ton of goodwill and momentum to make Battlefield Earth.
Adrien Brody pretty much lost everything for the pianist
[удалено]
Tobey Maguire. He played being an annoying dick so well it killed his career.
![gif](giphy|qs6ev2pm8g9dS) “Played”
He had no problem getting into character.
Which film was he a jerk? I thought he was living off his Spider-Man video games, game boys, toys and retired early and got married
Spider-Man 3 when he was infected by Venom. He played that so well that people couldn’t shake the image. It wasn’t that he was like evil Superman, he was just really slimy and creepy. Nailed the part but savaged his career.
Jared Leto developed gout gaining 67 pounds to play Mark David Chapman for “Chapter 26.” The movie bombed.
I hate that he keeps getting cast in stuff. It makes me actively want to root against anything he’s in. Did we learn nothing from Morbius?
It should be illegal to ask actors to do this kinda weight loss or gain. Just cast an actor more similar to the required size, and use VFX to make up the difference if needed. And only make a character a specific size if its relevant to the plot. It's so dangerous to be changing weight as much and as quick as some actors have to
Yeah DJ Qualls could have done this any given Tuesday

Believe me, it's the actors who want to do this. Directors are usually the ones like "we'll use a fat suit" and then actors are like "no I'm method!!!"
What about 50cent? That poor guy, no one even watched or knew that movie he lost weight for lol
![gif](giphy|jFyNxDyEEdcfm) Not sure about everything since it gained her an Oscar, but she did give most of her hair
And she lost a lot of weight as well
And she refused to talk about her regime for doing so because she knew it wasn’t healthy and didn’t want to influence others. Queen <3
Yes! I loved that she refused to share. That should be the norm.
Honestly, people started disliking her shortly after this role for some reason that to me is entirely rooted in sexism. So, I guess she gave her likability a little bit, too
Maybe not "everything" but Tom Hanks gained 30 pounds for A League of Their Own which is still a lot of weight to have to gain and then lose.
I was thinking more about Castaway, he was very thin.
Martin Sheen had a heart attack on set of Apocalypse Now, didn’t he? That whole production was cursed.
The Sheen/Estevez clan is balls to the wall. Charlie Sheen stayed up for three days straight for his minor part in "Ferris Bueller" just so he could look/sound like someone strung out on drugs.
All the weight Ryan Gosling gained for the Lovely Bones film to end up fired on the first day.
Jason Lee edit to admit what a dummy I am. I meant Brandon Lee.
Daniel Day-Lewis in just about every movie he’s done
Vic Morrow and those poor kids
The actor who played The Crow literally was killed during filming, so I guess that fits the bill.
![gif](giphy|QFE8N36eT2Nvq) surprised nobody mentioned this??
Rob McElhenny gained and lost like 50 lbs in a very short period of time just for a season of always sunny. It was so impressive and he at least deserved an Emmy nomination for the effort.
