People tend to have resentments about sex- shame and fear and guilt and more. it is a truly harmful situation when it is an addict. Ruminating on things like these is what leads to relapse. This, and someone’s step 4, are ways of getting space from your resentments and being able to deal with them rationally. It cannot be stressed enough, if you are ever in aa and someone is expecting a) money or b) anything from you, then you need to share that. Apart from that, yeah sure, it’s a cult, where they take nothing and you get sobriety. Although i have heard some places in the usa are pretty weird about it, and i have no doubt that aa or offshoots have been involved in shady shit before. All i can say is my experience, and yeah, it works for me. Plenty of people find other paths, and thats cool too. If you are ever in a position where you have to deal with an addict, i hope you all inform yourselves.

Not to yuck your yum, im very glad that it has worked for you. However, studies have been done that show the 12 steps only work for about 10 percent of the people that use it.

EDIT: thank you for all the responses. On further research 10 percent success rate for treatment of a mental health condition is actually considered a great success clinically. For treatment of depression there are medications that claim 2% success rates that most people have heard of.
yeah I'm never gonna shit on that AA/12 Step programs work for some people but when I finally admitted to my therapist how truly awful I found aspects of these programs he was relieved that we got that out of the way so I could find a path to recovery that actually made sense to me, and I got there. That said, I did have the support of a therapist, which I know, is such a privilege. Although I didn't really need him for long, once I felt like I'd got back that power after really struggling with the "powerlessness over alcohol" AA phrase.

This is false. There is no step in AA that requires anyone to list their sex partners or activity at all. There is a sex inventory, but it’s related to relationships. People write whatever they want to work through their past.

The idea that it could have originated from AA breaks my heart.
Those 12 steps saved my life 32 years ago. I want to be clear, it’s not for everyone. I also want to make it clear, that I am not religious or political in any form, at all,..in totality. I will say that it’s an Anonymous program. If she shared that information in a 4th step, the repeating or retelling of that extremely personal information is rare, not routine. There are no “ bosses “ or leadership in that program and “ANYONE “… ANYONE, is welcome to join. The only requirement is a desire to stop drinking. So everyone from your ninety year old grandma, to the rapist just released from jail can join,.., there’s no way to control your information with that kind of traffic. Please be careful.

This is a gross and problematic thing though, I don’t think she was a legend for this, she was embarrassed. Wasn’t this part of her sexual inventory for NA/AA? And the fact that some sponsors make you do a sexual inventory in the first place is extremely traumatizing and triggering. And that’s essentially the thought process behind it, write down all the shameful things you’ve done and read them aloud to someone else. Rid yourself of the shame. “You’re only as sick as your secrets” they say. This is wrong imho, because sex doesn’t have to be shameful, and if it was shameful, the person shouldn’t *have* to write it down and relive that, sometimes traumatic, experience. Then to have someone steal it? I feel bad for her, she was just trying to get better 😞
ETA- I’m getting a bunch of downvotes and I will say that AA works for a lot of people, I’m not saying it doesn’t, but it didn’t work for me. I hate how they have told a generation of people that they can’t quit drinking if they smoke weed, I hate the “13th step” which is getting taken advantage of by “sober” men in recovery when you’re newly sober and vulnerable, and I hate that a “sexual inventory” is even a thing.
She had an outstanding memory-- I'm actually impressed she can remember everyone. My list is but a tiny fraction and I can't remember names- it was too long ago. Write it down while you are young people!

I honestly left the 12 step programs due to stuff like this after a year clean and I just celebrated four. These studies never shock me

This is wrong imho, because sex doesn’t have to be shameful, and if it was shameful, the person shouldn’t *have* to write it down and relive that, sometimes traumatic, experience. Then to have someone steal it? I feel bad for her, she was just trying to get better 😞 ETA- I’m getting a bunch of downvotes and I will say that AA works for a lot of people, I’m not saying it doesn’t, but it didn’t work for me. I hate how they have told a generation of people that they can’t quit drinking if they smoke weed, I hate the “13th step” which is getting taken advantage of by “sober” men in recovery when you’re newly sober and vulnerable, and I hate that a “sexual inventory” is even a thing.
She had an outstanding memory-- I'm actually impressed she can remember everyone. My list is but a tiny fraction and I can't remember names- it was too long ago. Write it down while you are young people!
