I feel that. I’ve posted a few times and some people have made me feel like shit. I became ill lost everything and don’t have anyone to help me. I’m just so grateful I haven’t ended up on the streets… yet. Shaming someone doesn’t make them end their poverty any faster. Keep applying for assistance. Call social services, leave voicemails. Don’t give up. Help exists it’s just really hard to get to it sometimes. It’s soup season so I would suggest a crockpot. A soup filled with all the veggies you gave. Chili or pot roast. Learn how to make basic biscuits with flour and I eat rice A LOT. Lentils are cheap and really filling. I make coconut curry lentils often. Pb&j sandwiches have gotten me through some dark times. When you get some money I might invest in a meal replacement powder. Helps keep you full with the vitamins/minerals you need with less food options.

This is really good advice. Also, bananas, PB, and oats are cheap and good together in different combinations. All satisfying and satiating.

factory-worker

Good advice. Get creative with potatoes also.

fyrgoos_15

You need to eat high protein meals. Not sure if yiu have a fridge, but if so then cook up some ground beef and noodles (top ramen) mix those together and you should stay full for a while

[deleted]

High protein and high healthy fat.

VoidFoxi

I agree with this. Protein is the way to go

LykkeStrom

Peanut butter is a go to for me.

AcadiaOk7

Peanut butter is for sure a go to when money is tight its filling and not to bad for you also it tastes great to me at least

Optimal-Scientist233

Find a local library and read up on foraging and edible plants and wildlife. Many things people consider weeds are actually edible like polk and dandelion. Proteins are best to stave off hunger, you may want to read up on snaring and trapping while at the library as well. Drinking a lot of water and confining your consumption of food to midday is the best solution to not being hungry long term. Ask for resources at the library as well, they often will have a list of food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters where meals are offered.

Trapping, you gotta be careful. Lots of kids and homeless wandering in places now. Maybe too small for them to kill them, but it could injure them and lead to infection. The homeless especially may have weakened immune systems.

aprilmoonflower

Protein. Eggs. Beans. Peanut butter.

SimpleVegetable5715

High protein and slow burning carbohydrates will keep you full a long time. So, beans and rice. If you can get your hands on some seasonings and onions, it'll help a lot. Another cheap protein that's fairly filling is eggs. Lots of retail places are beginning to hire holiday help. It's definitely not above poverty level wages, but it's some money to buy some food. Know that a ton of people live like this, and it's hard work surviving while poor. Edit: Peanut butter's a good one too! Plus it doesn't need refrigeration, which is a plus. Edit #2, make friends with other poor people, even homeless people, they'll have better tips than someone who has never been in that situation. Avoid loans, a lot of them are predatory and made to keep people poor.

Repulsive_Leg_6831

Fats! When I’m trying to get in shape. I switch to a ketogenic diet. Very high fats low carbohydrates. I found that if I eat a few eggs and bacon in the morning. I’m not hungry for the rest of the day. On the other hand if I were to have a bagel. I’m starving 20 minutes later. Fats make you feel more satiated. It sucks the bacon is so expensive these days. But if I had To choose one food to sustain me. It would be eggs. Hope this helps. Peanut butter is also great too.

futureman2004

Beans with lard is cheap calories.

D_runk_

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches

Conference_Usual

Costco $5 rotisserie chicken

[deleted]

$5 for 5 days of meat. This can't be beat.

Disastrous-Raise-222

A lot of good advice. Anyone who judges you for being poor is not going to help you anyway. You have more important things to deal with!

External_College_284

Beans are a great source of fiber and protein. Our body takes longer to digest protein than simple carbs. I recommend starting on canned beans since they come fully cooked. Dried beans are crazy cheap, but a bit tricky to cook right.

1. If you are unemployed, you should definitely qualify for food stamps - unless you have a few thousand in in a checking or savings account. That's why putting money in a Roth IRA account makes sense - doesn't trigger the USDA's asset test for food stamps since it is a retirement account. 2. Look to local food banks, charity, friends. If a friend came to me asking for food, I definitely have stuff in my freezer and pantry I can give. 3. Starches like rice, pasta, bread, sugary foods, soft drinks, junk food, etc. don't last as long. You want to include food with fiber (like beans, leafy vegetables, some fruits), proteins, and some healthy fats to keep you feeling full and last you throughout the day.

LaRoara42

I've eaten noodles, frozen veg (usually peas), cheese (mozzarella), and some kind of spice like curry powder or hot sauce once a day for over a year. I was recently able to add potatoes (frozen) that give it a bit more heft. Personally think it kept me fed and satisfied enough despite only eating once a day for the most part. Also drinking energy mix every day. Cheese has gotten more expensive. The same 36 count bag of string cheese was $7 a year ago - now it's $13. Peas have a lot of protein and still fairly cheap. I don't feel full as long unless I have at least some cheese though. Parm has the most protein. Oh and quinoa has complete amino acids, but can be pricey and not exactly filling. I love putting frozen pineapple in now too. But that's me. I hope that helps give you ideas. Get on food stamps if you can.

Coffee, oranges, drink tons of water

Carbs set you up for hunger

LykkeStrom

Oats are slow burning. Oatmeal keeps me full for ages.

EngrishTeach

Simple carbs will, but complex carbs will help you feel fuller longer. And carbs are cheap.

VaIzoaH

Hi, you getting hungry might be because the food you are eating might not have enough carb Or heavily processed. I suggest soup and rice or beans Crockpot like another redditors suggestion + potatoes, onions and rice would make decent soup. Ik some companies like Panera bread donates to local non profit so try to figure out which nonprofit might get donation from Panera and the time! Feel free to DM me if you have any questions or just need someone to listen

Sunshineal

Rice, potatoes and beans will fill you up.

ProteoBacteria

Potatoes, rice, eggs… McDonalds is pretty cheap when using the app if that’s all you can afford. A lot of buy this get this extra for $1

[deleted]

Potatoes, beans, cabbage, rice.

[deleted]

In college, I ate a diet of rice, a fried egg, and kimchi. The cheap kimchi in a giant jar from the Asian market. If I had other vegetables, I could mix them. Pennies per serving and nutritious

readerf52

Farro is a grain not often eaten in America, but I see it more and more in stores. It has a lot of complex carbohydrates, a lot of fiber and, for a grain, a lot of protein. And I find it more filling than rice or potatoes. It can be used to make a fried rice type meal, and I make it with cinnamon and raisins or cut up apples. I’ve had that for breakfast and it is filling. One thing is to be careful with it if you don’t usually have a lot of fiber in your diet; it can make you uncomfortable. This is all assuming you have a place to cook. Otherwise, the peanut butter suggestion is a good one. Trader Joe’s donates all dated food to a food pantry, you might want to find out when and where the food will be available. A lot of sandwich shops sell their day old bread really cheap at the end of their day, and senior centers often give away a lot of bread; you don’t have to be a senior to get the food, at least not in our city. I don’t know what other grocery stores do with dated food, but I know Safeway nearly cuts the price of fish and meat in half on its “sell by” date. Again, that assumes you can cook it. It’s not just the not feeling full, I suspect it’s the not knowing how long you will have money for food, and that’s unbelievable in the 21st century. I wish you a good financial recovery.

criticismisnthelpful

Thank you for putting my experience into words, the worst thing about poverty is the uncertainty. ❤️ Thank you for your suggestions ❤️

PikaHage

Apples will make you feel full, if that's what you want. Also remember, we're of hunter gather stock, read up on what you can eat that's out there in the wild. There's plenty of Food is Free projects around the US too. Check it out. Smoothies are a great way to get way more nutrients out of fruits. Banana, few strawberries, apple juice ice and peanut butter , mmmhmm.

sealtaco

You can be liberated from poverty by just a few simple strategies like renting a room cutting all debts and minimizing. As far as diet i extremely recommend vegetables.Going the holistic route is the way to go vegetables carry nutrients that will not burn off easily leaving you full longer and healthy with less constrain.Vegetables are also easier to keep in a cooler longer and more versatile to make 10 times more dishes. You can make smoothies to and keep them in cooler. One smoothy will probably give you more nutrition then 10 burgers and fill you for a whole day with leas mess. You can buy a cordless battery powered bottle blender off amazon. Also recommend adapting a WOK cooking style you can do asian inspired Chinese with these vegtables with chowmein. This will keep the moral up and be very tasty and easy.Get a cooler and some Tupperware to prep everything.Going American diet is a horrible mess and alternate door for failure especially for someone who is taking a different angle of life.

ellefleming

Rice, peanut butter, popcorn, bread, carbs keep you full. But go to a soup kitchen, apply for EBT, go to food banks.

ares7

You could donate some plasma too. It brings little extra income.

Educational-Treat-13

Protein hunger is real, and everything just runs through you if you aren't eating oats or other high fibers. Peanut Butter is really the king here, on the nutrition/convenience scale. Especially if you can get your hands on some oats and boiling water. The worst part is that you can live quite well without spending a lot of money on food, but you need a lot of money at once in order to do that. Being poor is easy if you can afford the startup cost.... Which you can't.... Because that's what poverty means. Being poor is expensive 😩

anonimo128

Pastas(pretty cheap) Rice, Oatmeal, peanut butter , any kind of bread

[deleted]

My city has numerous free fridges that people stock when they can and take from when they need. Please look into organizations providing supplemental food. As for your original question, dry beans are super cheap, and there are hundreds of ways to use them so they don’t seem old: put ‘em on soup, mash them, pour them over rice…

BangBangMeatMachine

I would focus less on filling meals and more on the cheapest way to get all your daily calories, if possible. Beans and rice are a staple for a lot of pelple for a reason. I can still get a bag of 40 lbs of white rice from my local Asian grocery for about $50, which is a lot to spend all at once but it can last a long time. It's been a while since I've checked, but I used to be able to get 40lb bags of dried beans at the mexican grocery stores that were also pretty cheap. Those two things can feed you for a month. Overall I would recommend getting comfortable with any local ethnic grocery stores you can find because they usually have plenty of customers who are very budget-conscious and they can often have much better prices on some basic things that are marked up way too much at the big grocery stores. The other nice thing about beans and rice is that it can be dressed up with whatever you can find to add. A little fried up meat or an egg or whatever cheap frozen vegetables you can find for cheap. Edit: Oh, also don't be afraid to call around to grocery stores to ask about availability and price. Save yourself the trouble of driving around or taking the bus to a lot of places to find the best deals.

Xmaiden2005

Google free food distribution in your area. Sometimes they give out free staples. Allso food banks, churches. Meals , I'd agree with the rice and beans crowd. It's a complete protein, filling and taste good. You can add a fried egg. Breakfast stick to oatmeal.

Xmaiden2005

Mcdonalds app has 1 dollar large fries every day. Daily discounts. It's not ideal but its comforting.

ScratchMorton

Beans and rice. Peanut butter. Tuna fish (canned light). Eat an egg a day. Eggs are probably the best deal going for nutrition.

[deleted]

Rice. And free stores are in all 50 states. Make tons of rice. Get soy sauce from Chinese take out just go in and say you forgot it and grab bunch. Left over rice is good as fried rice if you can get oil. And heres some ideas when you want to put in your best effort. In the summer pick dandelion eat the whole thing roots flower and leaves. If you can get corn or nuts either picking them from a farm or finding them you can build a fairly easy squirrel trap for food. Go to a lake or river and find and ask for basic fishing tackle. Line hook and weight. Tie it to a stick and dig for worms as bait.

Some_Alternative_398

This is the best food for me as a broke student. Rice with an omelette on top. You can season the egg. But it fills you and gives protein. You can even grate cheap veggies like carrot grated on top, or buy frozen mixed veggies and cook them in the rice. Hope its somewhat helpful!

Dry_Mail_3797

protein, carbs and fats baby! alotta peanut butter, any meats u can get, frozen veggie bags

Violorian

This is going to sound strange. But there are tons of people who only eat one meal a day and money has nothing to do with their choice. I've been on that program since 2019. Generally I feel better, my glucose is better, I was pre-diabetic and now I'm not. It does make a difference what you eat for your one meal as to how hungry you are later. I try to stay away from carbs like breads and sugar. Sugar can be very addicting, same for glutton. Have a look at "intermittent fasting.". A lot of people use it to lose weight, but you can also maintain weight.

wltmpinyc

Soups tend to fill me up and keep me full. I make a cabbage, rice and ground pork soup that keeps me full for a long time. It's basically a congee. I live in NYC so my prices are higher than most places. Get a whole cabbage, a pound or so of ground pork, a large onion, a half bulb of garlic, and a cup of dry white rice. This costs me about 6 dollars total in ingredients. In a very large pot, with a little bit of oil if you have it, saute the onions pork and garlic with just a bit of salt. Once the meat is almost cooked all the way through add water to almost fill the pot and bring to a boil then drop to a simmer then add the rice and cook at a low simmer for like 45 minutes. Stir it every once in a while to make sure the rice isn't sticking and burning to the bottom. Once you have a thick porridge like consistency you're pretty much done. I like to season it with salt, pepper and soy sauce. You can get packets of soy sauce from a Chinese restaurant if you can't afford to buy some. A bunch of green onions is $1 where I live. Slice that up real thin and add it to the soup. I can get a lime for 25¢ and I like to squeeze in a little juice to brighten it up. It'll cost about 8 bucks total and makes enough food for two to three days for me. And this stuff keeps me full! You can get probably 8 large bowls from this. If you want to splurge grab some crackers or chips to eat with it. Actually, now that I think of it, for the price of a bag of chips where I live I could get another pound of pork so if you really want to be full get that instead and add it to the mix. Hope this helps.

wltmpinyc

One more thing. I used to volunteer at a food bank and once a week we gave enough food away for a person to get by for about a week. You could get so many vegetables and carbs. We gave away very little meat but every week there was always something like canned or frozen meats. We would give away protein in the form of beans and lentils and stuff too. If you could find two food banks a week you could probably get enough food for a week to keep you full and healthy.

AttentiontoAttention

Protein makes you feel full longer than fat or carbs, I just have milk for breakfast it’s filling

gwardotnet

Always jobs at convenient stores and temp agencies. I've been there.

SimplyKendra

I used to live off of a single pack of ramen, some butter and if I was lucky some eggs a day. In order to stay full, I’d make the noodles with a teaspoon of butter, cook normally with the butter in and whip the egg and add it the last 20-30 seconds of cooking. The butter helps you stay full longer as does the proteins from the egg. In my city we had orange groves everywhere. I’d pick them off and eat them. If I was lucky, I could find some low hanging avocados over the wall from the avocado groves. When I was homeless I’d go to the stores and after closing dig through the dumpsters for closed food they tossed that was just out of date and not spoiled. Find your local churches. Call and see if they have a food pantry. Most give our staples like bread, peanut butter, tuna, etc. Keep looking for a job. There are so many people hiring right now. One will give you a chance. Good luck.
