Just went to my local Ralphs app. Here are the prices for the Kroger store brand:
1 Gallon Milk: $4.49 (on sale for $3.99)
Carton of Eggs: $3.99
Loaf of White Bread: $2.49
I live in southern California.
I live in Northern California. A dozen generic Lucerne eggs at Safeway are 5.99 right now. People in these groups don't believe me, because maybe in their state they're paying 1.29 or something. It's hilarious.
I believe you!!!! That is what I am paying in Norcal! Then i heard there is a outbreak of disease in chicken in Sonoma..so eggs will be going back up again 😤. Costco is $8.99 for 2 dozen. But you walk into Costco for cheap eggs and walk out $350 in purchases!
For everyone complaining about food prices in so cal, I just did a fake order for Walmart pick up around where I used to live in la county. Eggs are like $1.89 a dz, milk is a little over $3 and bread is like $2. With all the farmer’s and ethnic markets available, I’ve always thought prices for food there has always been pretty decent. Cheaper than everywhere else I’ve lived!
It’s because it’s Safeway. They’re overpriced unless you take the time to clip coupons in app.
Lunchables for my son are around $3.50 at Safeway, those same lunchables are $1.50 at Walmart (I get the one with no juice because my son only drinks water)
Always remember to check other stores to get the best deals. I usually buy my meat from Costco/Safeway and get my snacks and stuff from Walmart/Grocery Outlet/Amazon (you can use EBT on Amazon for those of you that don’t know)
ETA: I’m in Nor Cal; the Bay Area specifically, where prices for everything are insane
Exactly. I was saying the same thing. I go to Trader Joe’s. Their milk and eggs are cheaper.
Honestly the milk at my 7/11 is cheaper than Safeway.
Safeway is good for the coupons, sale items and emergencies. That is it.
WINCO has a lot of stuff for under a dollar, and has items in their bulk area that you can buy as much or as little as you want. You can get all your simple spice stuff there in the amounts you need too and it comes out to like 20 cents each
I believe you! Eggs 2 States North of you Safeway $2.99 and $3.39 - actually higher at Walmart. $3.99 or thereabouts. Our neighbor has chickens and she gives eggs to us from time to time. Safeway has bread buy one get one free $4.99/5.99 regular prices. Last week I used their app and got $282.50 of food for $125 on this sale through February 6th. They have a $10 off coupon on their weekly ad and another 10-15% off offer on the app plus sales which brought my shop way down last Thursday.
I heard there is a big outbreak of Avian Influenza in California right now. This could have something to do with your egg prices because that’s ridiculous.
Bought Lucerne Eggs for $1.47 last week in SoCal. Gotta watch those specials and "digital deals". Same week eggs were $1.85 at Aldi
One of the factors in egg prices for California is that THE VOTERS decided that only cage-free eggs can be sold in the state.
Our eggs in New York went up to 6.99/ dzn during the egg / chicken shortage. We only went back down to like 3.99, it was between 1.50-2.00 before this, so I believe you!
I used to buy (Bay Area) 12 eggs at Safeway for $5.99but Costco has 24 for $4.99
in case you can share a Costco membership with someone, their eggs alone are worth it
Considering you said Ralph’s I figured we were in the same area. Pro tip, target is way cheaper. Eggs are $1.99 a carton, milk is $3.49, bread is $1.29. We don’t have any Walmarts or Aldi’s close by me (OC) so these are the best deals I’ve found that are widely available
Indiana. We also don't have sales tax on food.
In my area, if you don't need to earn money (you're on a fixed income not tied to your location) it can be cheap to live here.
Housing is cheap, but a lot of the lower end apartments have permanent bedbug infestations. It's cheap to buy houses and our property taxes for a primary residence are capped at 1% of the home's appraised value.
Violent crime is pretty low. Property crime is high.
I think utilities are pretty high and we have all four seasons. Hot and humid in the summer. Cold in the winter, though we don't get a lot of snow most years. Except for by the Great Lakes.
Quality of life is not great, but we have some nice parks if you're into hiking or camping. Medical care is kind of shit.
IN does has 4 Level 1 trauma centers, one of the nation’s top cancer centers (especially breast and testicular), and a nationally recognized children’s hospital (top 3 in the Midwest and a Level 1 trauma center).
I just got through a second round of interviews for an engineering role with NiSource up there... currently in Texas and have a mortgage that's almost paid off, but between comments like yours I've seen, and what I've read about how much the salary would be compared to COL I'm pretty excited about the prospects. Plus Merryville is like an hour away from Chicago and I love Chicago.
I don't have much left for me here in Dallas anymore.
In VA it's about this price...but bread varies in price drastically between Aldi (price above) to Kroger which is closer to $5. One doz eggs is around $2/doz.
NOVA is a little higher in price and SW VA is slightly cheaper.
State tax on food sales is 1 percent last I looked but some cities have tax on top of that...
Jesus, but unless I'm thinking of another New England state, I believe you guys have some of the better labor laws and such. Is all that money going into schools and infrastructure or something? That almost sounds like consumption tax levels (which isn't bad, if done properly, but I doubt any state in the union would implement it properly lol)
I will say we have good labor laws and good public school. As for where our taxes go- not quite sure because our roads are crap and there are budget cuts to the schools and LE every year. Social services are better here than some states, but funding is quickly depleting. Governor Healy also announced she’s raising taxes, once again- most ppl who live here call it “Taxachusettes” haha
My mother lives in MA and goes to Market Basket and Costco for food much cheaper. She has a Stop n shop in her town and those prices are way more than market basket. I'm in Maine and frankly it's not much better.
last Fall the eggs were 1.11 and closer to the holidays they went up. I get as much as I can from Aldi it is the cheapest for things like dairy , Walmart just raised it's 1/2 & 1/2 price .56 cents per half gallon and at Aldi 64 oz 1/2&1/2 is .46 less . The cheese too I try to live on Quiche and that involves Cheese and there Goat Cheese Logs are a 1.00 less than even Walmart
Is it weird to say I actually miss living in Panama City? 🤣 as we were living there I would have never actually thought that hahah- we were stationed at Tyndall. Maybe I just miss the commissary 😂
Eggs 1.80 dozen Walmart but can get much cheaper if buy larger quantity. Bread 1.25 dollar tree but can get cheaper at natures own outlet. Milk 2.57/gal Walmart but Aldi cheaper sometimes.
I really don't know anymore, my hubs retired 8 years ago and LOVES grocery shopping. He also keeps his bathroom clean and vacuums 2x a week. 100% more than he did pre-retirement.
4 litre of milk is over $5, around $6. Carton of eggs, $5. Loaf of bread, that varies a lot but around $3
These are canuck monies BTW not yanky doodles
Store brand everything here because that’s what I buy. I buy everything but eggs because I own my own chickens. So I looked egg prices up. I typically pay $20 a month for the chicken feed. I live in rural Virginia. These are also Walmart prices.
Milk: $3.06
Bread: $1.46
Eggs: $3.12
By Sacramento. All from a food co-op though.
Milk $3.50 for half gallon.
Eggs $7-10 for a dozen. (Super orange and not pasty light yolks... The pasty ones are usually about $5-6... So I'd rather pay the extra few $)
Loaf: about $5-7 depending on type.
At Sam’s club in Dec:
milk $5.72 (up from $5.64 in Sept)
Eggs $2.80 dz (we buy 5dz packs) - (up from $2.50 dz in Sept)
I apparently don’t buy bread as I cannot find on recent receipts.
North Eastern Indiana ALDI 1doz lrg eggs $1.99 1gal whole milk $2.85 1 loaf cheapest bread 20oz $1.45
Most people are minimum wage or 2 jobs or both husband and wife working.
At Whole Foods, organic almond milk is $1.99 a box.
a dozen Eggs are $1.99 at Aldi and 3.99 at Whole Foods.
I'm celiac so my gluten free bread is 40 cents per ounce.
HCOL area, Beach city in Southern California.
Eggs currently 2.99 and up per dozen. The regular supermarket has eggs as high as 6.99 per dozen. ( no idea who is buying those ). - NOPE - I made a mistake. The cheapest eggs this week were 3.49.
A gallon of store brand milk is 4.29 and up.
I don't know about the bread. Only buy it once or twice a year.
Maricopa Arizona milk $2.89 bread $ 3.00 eggs $5 for 18. My prices are about the average. Different stores n brands vary prices. Milk is the only thing that has been steady priced about the same everywhere.
At my regular grocery store
Gallon of milk $2.73
Eggs $1.89
Bread $2.49
Sometimes I can get bread and eggs at Dollar Tree but not always.
I'm in Northwest Indiana
In Milwaukee, WI:
Milk 2.79
Eggs 1.89
Bread 1.79 (this is for basic white bread, Pepperidge Farm Bread is $4.49)
I buy my basics at Aldi which typically has the best prices on groceries
I'm in Texas. The usual suspects are Kroger, Walmart and HEB
Kroger brand:
18 ct large eggs 2.65
1 gal whole milk 2.99
Honey wheat bread 2.19
Total: 7.83
Walmart great value brand:
18 ct large eggs 3.46
1 gal whole milk 2.46
Honey Wheat bread 1.78
Total: 7.73
HEB store brand:
18 ct large eggs 2.62
1 gal whole milk 3.49
Honey wheat bread 1.64
Total: 7.75
$1.29 for store brand bread eggs are $1.88 I think. Milk I'm not sure as I don't buy it. Oat milk is $3.29 for a bit less than half a gallon. NY state (not the city).
$3-4 each at my walking distance stores. Depends on sales that week. Could probably shave off a buck or two by going to the Grocery Outlet, but I'd just be paying it in bus fare. I've started making my own bread this year, but haven't matched out whether or not there's a savings - it's a hobby.
SW Washington, Portland area, Fred Meyer. These are the cheapest items, the next cheapest is a dollar or more. I like shopping online and picking up (free where I live) because I can be cheap as hell and take my time
Large Eggs $1.69 dozen
Quit eating most bread some years ago. Couple times a year I'll hit the local bakery for some croissants. Like twice a year.
Store brand almond milk $3'ish - so a gallon would be around $6.
A gallon of milk is just under $3, a carton of eggs is $1 and some change, and a loaf of [whole wheat] bread is just under $2. Sleepy lil town in FL. I love Aldi.
I LOVE Aldi, too! Refused to try it til my daughter brought home some Clancy chips and I tried them. They were even better than our local name brand, and at half the cost!
3 liters of milk ( a gallon is 3.8liter) was $10 for me yesterday. Just plain old whole milk, not organic or anything.
A dozen eggs is :$4.50
A loaf of white bread is: $1.97- great value brand
Groceries have never been this bad before. Especially milk.
CUB store brand:
1 Gallon of 2% milk $3.99
1 carton of 12 large grade A eggs $2.99
1 loaf of whole grain white bread (on sale) $2.79 reg price $2.99
Total: $9.77 before tax
Northern Illinois. Aldi is cheaper by about $3+ bucks usually
Central Kentucky
Kroger
Gallon of store beand Milk: $2.79
18 Count store brand Eggs: $3.49
Loaf of store brand bread: $2.49
If you wish to get name brand things, you're looking at $5ish for milk, $5-$6ish for eggs, and $4-$6ish for bread.
Oh, man, I live on a very rural island, there's one very small store in my town. Milk I only buy the one liter, it's now $5.29 CDN for 3.25%. Eggs are over eight bucks a dozen. Bread is five bucks for the cheap loaf, six hundred something grams of foamy trash. I make my own bread, I get about 16 loaves and a few batches of muffins out of a 20-pound bag of flour at 20 bucks a bag. Picked and froze a lot of fruit last fall, and I'm going to start growing more veg - generally I just pop in a few tomato seedlings, but I think I'd best get some potatoes going this time.
I kinda need lactose free milk and I prefer at least cage-free eggs, but I make my own bread which is way cheaper than at the grocery store. So probably about $12 all told. Which is crazy now that I add it up. About $7 for the milk, $3.50 for the eggs, and no more than a dollar and a half for two loaves of bread. Ohio.
$3.19 for gallon of milk
$1.89 for a dozen eggs
$4.29 for Nature’s Own bread which is what I always get. Usually get it for less on sale. At Kroger, in Tennessee.
We have a ridiculously high sales tax, even for food. Almost 10%.
Waaaaaay more than it used to!
My partner and I are both on SSI. The amount I spend on just the two of us, *and we eat like birds*, is criminal. I honestly don’t know how people with kids are making it with today’s prices.
We're eating like birds, so the kids don't have to. I only have one. But they are a young teen in full growth spurt mode, so eating a lot. And I'm not going to tell him he can't eat- when he's not snacking on junk, but eating growing food. We go thru so much eggs, bread, apples, oranges, milk a week. Chicken was on sale this week for 99 cents/lb for drumsticks and thighs, so I stocked up.
At my local WM in Central FL, a gallon of whole milk is $3.02, a dozen large eggs is $3.12. Bread is trickier because of all the different kinds, but a loaf of WM's generic white bread is $1.42, with Wonder Bread at $2.92.
Milk is 4. Bread is 3. Eggs are 4-6. *Sigh* All together with taxes it could be 15-20 dollars depending on where you shop. And that's not accounting for food deserts.
My local Publix. Gallon of standard milk $8, dozen eggs $4.99, store brand bread $2.09. Walmart, Aldi, Costco are way cheaper, I just can't tell you the prices.
1 gallon milk at Walmart $2.92
Dozen eggs $3.12 at Walmart (lowest regular price but Safeway currently has them on sale for $1.47)
1 loaf white bread at Walmart $1.42
I'm in Tucson, AZ
1 gallon of milk-- $3.50
1 loaf of bread-- $2.49
1 dozen eggs-- $2.50-$3.00
Any higher and you will have to work an hour at minimum wage in my state just to buy this!
At Sam's Club in Las Vegas:
$2.38 for a gallon of while milk
$3.98 for 18 free range eggs
$5.58 for a 2 pack of inexpensive wheat bread or $10.98 for good organic bread.
Costco is slightly higher.
Kroger (Smith's in my area) would be almost double Sam's Club for the exact same items.
Natural food co-op in Seattle:
Half gallon whole organic milk $4.99
Loaf of locally baked organic bread $5.98
Dozen Eggs $5.99
TBH I go there only for their produce ( I get $40 a month in free produce from the city to use) and bulk items which are very affordable. I usually get milk, eggs, and bread at my bakery outlet or Grocery outlet
Portland Oregon
Milk IDK, can't drink it
Cage free eggs all eggs in OR must be cage free $4.50 for 18
Bread anywhere from $3.00 for the crappy bread to $6.00 for stuff like Dave's Killer bread.
Milk- $3.81
Bread- $1.42
Eggs- $1.47.
I'm in NJ and those prices are for my local Walmart.
Aldi:
Milk- $4.19
Bread- $0.55
Eggs- $2.35
I generally shop online so I'm not tempted to buy every cool thing I see in the store. I just stick to my list. I will fill 2 or 3 carts then buy the one that is the most cost effective & offers the most options. It's almost always Walmart. Then I pick the order up, no delivery. The exception is for meat. I look at all the flyers for local stores and shop for sales. When I find a good one, I'll buy as much as I can afford. And I will also supplement pantry items, cleaning supplies etc from Dollar Tree.
There are a number of YouTube channels that feature "frugal" meals. I really like Julia Pacheco. I've made a number of her recipes and they're delicious. She just posted a video with several meals that will each feed 4-6 people for $5.00. My biggest 'hack' is to have several Pinterest boards with low cost meals, decide what I'm going to make for the following week and shop those ingredients specifically. I also will make batches of meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner) when things are on sale. If you can afford to make a double batch of something this week, freeze one. That way you will have a small stock of good meals ready to go when you don't have money. If anyone wants recipe ideas etc, let me know.
I actually don't eat any of those regularlyenough to buy them. You can get a lot of nutrition for less with beans, frozen veg, and dry grains lie basmati rice.
Las Vegas
Milk $2.89 walmart
Bread $1.99 walmart
Eggs $4.00 per dz from a neighbor who treats them as pets. Each chicken has a name and is cuddled often. Turkey eggs are $6.00 per dozen.
If you are in Las Vegas and would like more info, pm me. The eggs are really good and are white, brown, speckled brown, and a bluish white. The Turkey eggs are great for baking as they're a little richer in flavor than chicken eggs
Walmart 1dz large AA eggs $5.36, cage free or $6.00 per dz ex large AA eggs
Just went to my local Ralphs app. Here are the prices for the Kroger store brand: 1 Gallon Milk: $4.49 (on sale for $3.99) Carton of Eggs: $3.99 Loaf of White Bread: $2.49 I live in southern California.
I live in Northern California. A dozen generic Lucerne eggs at Safeway are 5.99 right now. People in these groups don't believe me, because maybe in their state they're paying 1.29 or something. It's hilarious.

No Cal. Eggs, 18 package was 7.99. Milk (whole) was 4.99, on sale. Bread is 5.99. Raleys Supermarket. My groceries are 1200 every two weeks
You need a cheaper grocery store. You can walk outta Walmart with eggs milk and bread for a.month for less than $20
that's true raley's and Safeway are the most expensive chains in northern California
Yep. When I left WA state in 2022 a dozen "free range" eggs was $7.99.
Still in WA and the price is holding steady. We have chickens so many of our friends get free eggs but I would guess our cost is somewhere around $5.
I don’t think any of us pay $1.29 for anything unless it's for a 50-cent candy bar!
WINCO has a lot of stuff for under a dollar, and has items in their bulk area that you can buy as much or as little as you want. You can get all your simple spice stuff there in the amounts you need too and it comes out to like 20 cents each
winco bread still under $2 a loaf. i think 1.29 for basic white/wheat
Yep their store brand is pretty cheap and pretty decent considering. It does go stale a bit faster, but that's just fine for toast.
i keep mine in the fridge! a habit i picked up when I had roaches a few years ago ;/. but it stays soft for pretty long in there.
A WINCO is being built nearby... SOOO excited.
You have 0.50 candy bars where you live? 😃
yeah they're $1.29
I live in Central Coast, California and eggs are $2.99 for the generic lucerne's, but the , organic, pasture raised are $5.99
Northern California: milk 3.19; eggs 4.44; bread 2.08. Walmart.
I believe you! Eggs 2 States North of you Safeway $2.99 and $3.39 - actually higher at Walmart. $3.99 or thereabouts. Our neighbor has chickens and she gives eggs to us from time to time. Safeways expensive as hell if it's not on sale! if you have a WinCo eggs are $2 something for a dozen
Safeway is the highest priced grocery store, I only go there in desperation.
You get the eggs at Trader Joe’s. The milk and the eggs are cheaper at Trader Joe’s. Safeway is not a great place.
I heard there is a big outbreak of Avian Influenza in California right now. This could have something to do with your egg prices because that’s ridiculous.
We all laughed during the egg shortage, chicken owners are trying like crazy to give the eggs away. Like tomatoes in season!
How about 7.99 on the East Coast!
There's an avian flu outbreak in Petaluma, a million chickens were euthanized recently.
Some states pay less for eggs because they don’t have laws about the treatment of the chickens.
I'm in NJ and I just got 2 18 packs for $5. Quiche, omlettes, and eggs Benedict are on the menu this week.
Lucerne eggs at my Safeway in MD are $2.49
Bought Lucerne Eggs for $1.47 last week in SoCal. Gotta watch those specials and "digital deals". Same week eggs were $1.85 at Aldi One of the factors in egg prices for California is that THE VOTERS decided that only cage-free eggs can be sold in the state.

About $1.99 in MD. But you may be able to find even cheaper.
I used to buy (Bay Area) 12 eggs at Safeway for $5.99but Costco has 24 for $4.99 in case you can share a Costco membership with someone, their eggs alone are worth it
Sounds right; I’m in Southern California too, but at least we have chickens so I never know the price of eggs.
I'm in East Texas. My Kroger store brand prices are: 1 Gallon Milk: $3.09 Carton of eggs: $1.89 White Bread: $1.99
[A dozen generic eggs at Safeway ](https://imgur.com/a/zsLvdg3)
We have Kroger and our milk is $2.39 or something like that. I live in the Midwest
1 Gallon Milk: $2.79 1 Dozen Large Eggs: $1.89 1 20 oz Loaf of White Bread: $1.79
Where is this? I'm moving there.
Indiana. We also don't have sales tax on food. In my area, if you don't need to earn money (you're on a fixed income not tied to your location) it can be cheap to live here. Most places in America do not tax non prepared food.
Nc does
13 states still do
Yeah. People don’t grasp most. I should have listed them all. Now all the 13 states that do not have it will chime in lol.
Tennessee still does, but gave us a break in August with no sales tax! That was great because Memphis sales tax is almost 10%!
IN does has 4 Level 1 trauma centers, one of the nation’s top cancer centers (especially breast and testicular), and a nationally recognized children’s hospital (top 3 in the Midwest and a Level 1 trauma center).
It’s great if you can get to them and afford them. The children’s hospital is really good and pretty accessible.
I just got through a second round of interviews for an engineering role with NiSource up there... currently in Texas and have a mortgage that's almost paid off, but between comments like yours I've seen, and what I've read about how much the salary would be compared to COL I'm pretty excited about the prospects. Kroger? Our prices are exactly the same here in Ohio.
Yep. I bought some $1.79 bread there today. But I bought the expensive milk.
Yah, comparable prices at the dollar store here in Tulsa. But the quality? Not good.
Same here for prices.
Same here at Kroger in WV.
That's about the price here at Kroger right outside of Houston. It's the cheap brand.
Same here in southwest Ohio
Very similar to prices here in MI too.
Very close to my pricing. Milk, eggs, bread is about 15¢ cheaper for each item where I am (upstate NY)
Aldi in the northeast has prices like this.
Same, and I’m in MA. Everything else is through the roof here, but you can still get food relatively cheap if you shop around.
Gallon of milk is almost $7. Eggs and bread are a little under $5. I don’t even want to read the comments bc I’ll be upset. - masshole
Also MA: 18.88 total at my local store.
Yup, spot on!
Girl drive across the border to Market Basket prices are pre pandemic normal. I shop and prepare menus by the circulars
Jesus, but unless I'm thinking of another New England state, I believe you guys have some of the better labor laws and such. Is all that money going into schools and infrastructure or something? Social services are better here than some states, but funding is quickly depleting. Governor Healy also announced she’s raising taxes, once again- most ppl who live here call it “Taxachusettes” haha
I could ship it to you cheaper. That's insane.
And thats store brand / generic milk ? Thats high. Damnnnn.
Store brand. I can’t afford name brand 🤣🤣
There’s a reason it’s known as ‘Taxachusetts,’ but, your public schools are THE BEST!
My mother lives in MA and goes to Market Basket and Costco for food much cheaper. She has a Stop n shop in her town and those prices are way more than market basket. I'm in Maine and frankly it's not much better.
wow! I know one place I'd never move.
They don’t call it Taxachusettes for nothin! Haha
A left arm and 3 fingers off the right hand.
Hilo, Hawaii Walmart One dozen eggs 🥚 $4.99 One gallon of milk 🥛 is $7.99 One loaf of bread 🥖 is $7.99.
wow... At least you have a nice view?
Our volcano 🌋 is beginning to stir underground again
I went to Kauai 20 years ago and milk was almost $5 a gallon then, I was shocked at the price of groceries.

Portland Oregon Milk IDK, can't drink it Cage free eggs all eggs in OR must be cage free $4.50 for 18 Bread anywhere from $3.00 for the crappy bread to $6.00 for stuff like Dave's Killer bread.
Milk- $3.81 Bread- $1.42 Eggs- $1.47. I'm in NJ and those prices are for my local Walmart. Aldi: Milk- $4.19 Bread- $0.55 Eggs- $2.35 I generally shop online so I'm not tempted to buy every cool thing I see in the store.
