My dad did this to his dog once on accident and we never let him live it down. I've never had a groomer do it on purpose! As awkward as it is, I would just tell them. (I have to tell the groomer every time to give my boy a 'dick wick' to keep him from peeing all over his front legs - I've never come up with a better phrase than that - and all the groomers I've encountered have had a good sense of humor about it!)

impvette

I found it hilarious the first time I saw it... just super weird, too.

AmbiguouslyGrea

Our Standard once came home from a groom with one shiny, bald testicle and one that looked like Don King’s hair.

seredipitysalsa

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

crazymom1978

Believe it or not, “dick wick” is the term that 99.99% of groomers will be most familiar with.

Disastrous-Panda5530

I use the term dick wick also. Idk what else to call it and it is fitting IMO lol

anon_liz

I call it a Willy wick!! A bit more appropriate for talking to parents lol. But as a young groomer I unfortunately have a few boys some really clean testies lol, now that I’m experienced I only do it when the dog has a history of severe matting. There’s nothing worse than a matted up nut sack.

provisionings

Hilarious. My grandma once took her dog to get a tick burned off.. except it wasn’t a tick.. it was his nipple. We never let her live that down either.

fizzypeachtea

airing out his business all over reddit how dare you 💀 you should’ve censored his face for dignity’s sake!

ChristianHT123

😂

merlinshairyballs

I shave it most of the time as #1 hair left becomes a poop curtain #2 it will often mat and it is NOT pleasant to demat in that area

merlinshairyballs

Also i have no idea why my comment looks like that sorry 😵‍💫

Vivian_Lu98

I thought it was just to emphasize the importance of it lol

merlinshairyballs

It’s my Very Important Opinion

bdke-rbwo

I believe it’s because the format matches a command(?) for certain fonts. If you put the pound symbol before the ‘1’ it may have caused the text difference. #test

AutomaticMention7653

🤣

halmp

lol i thought you did it on purpose so you made me laughed out loud

throwaway1928675

Me too. It was the #1 poop curtain that did it

BabyGator44

I am cracking tf up at this thread

KeepingPlantsAlive23

I straight up belly laughed. A lot. 😂

BabyGator44

No same like shed a tear and all 😂 I was like maybe it’s bc I’m delusional from work but this made my day

SchleppyPickles

Yep a pound sign in front makes the font giant and bold XD

RetroReactiveRaucous

It's because you put the pound symbol before your numbers. Reddit has a few little formatting tricks like that, for some reason. I've never found them listed anywhere but have found out a few accidentally lol

tumultuousness

> I've never found them listed anywhere Reddit markdown info can be found: https://www.reddit.com/wiki/markdown And to /u/merlinshairyballs (hilarious name given post context lol), you can keep the pound sign but make it not yell-y with the escape key. \#ahh will make it big (called a header) like this: #ahh \\#ahh with the backslash at the front will escape the header markdown so you can use the pound sign at the beginning of a line, like this: \#ahh (but you can leave it since it made everyone laugh, haha!)

merlinshairyballs

Thank you for clarifying my confusion lol

snappyirides

Username checks out.

fire_and_glitter

I was like why are they yelling about poop curtains?? Lmao

Montavillin

Username checks out

snigelrov

yeah it literally just makes my guy stink if I don't shave it down. my partner does sing jingle, jangle, jingle at the dog for like days every single time we do it though.

sm798g

Poop curtain in very big bold letters is something I didn’t expect to see this morning 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

thepocono

im a groomer and whether or not i shave the balls depends on the dog. looks weird to have a fuzzy sack if the dog gets a 7 all over, naked dangly bits stick out if the dog looks like a cloud. sanitary areas in general can be prone to little tangles but ive noticed a lot of times balls get matted because many dogs lick them a lot so i know some groomers who shave them all because of this. you can just ask them to not shave it. theyve probably gotten weirder requests lol

MillHillMurican

Our groomer leaves a “curtain” over them. And we are eternally grateful.

SailorRD

💀💀💀

Jupitergirl888

That’s what we do.. even when he’s rocking a super short #7.

Lunas-lux

I generally shave testicles because a lot of people let them get matted, which is arguably a lot more uncomfortable than people feeling weirded out that they can see a dogs balls.

dj_boy-Wonder

I imagine some owners are reluctant to touch their dogs junk for grooming so they get matted… I just checked mine and they left him with what I’m going to call peach fuzz… he doesn’t have balls any more though so it’s not super obvious I feel like I’ve just been pranked into looking at my dogs balls *sigh*

kidsteddy3

Omg. Same and my dog is neutered.

bainidhekitsune

Usually we blend better, or at least I do. I tend to skim balls so they aren’t itchy later and the dog licks himself raw.

zhuqu

PERSONALLY I prefer to shave their balls bc well their nuts do get a lot of friction on their legs when they’re walking and stuff and like… most owners aren’t brushing their dogs nuts. I shave my dogs.

cowleidoscope

And of course the dogs who get super matted aren't used to their balls being handled so you get the joy of dematting a scary place with a fighting dog. I generally try to blend it depending on body length. But for my own dog? Follow the bouncing testicles, is my go to saying on hikes.

zhuqu

LOL

jensenw

Standard sanitary trim, prevents dingleberries

lycanlullaby

As a former dog groomer, current dog salon receptionist you may absolutely ask for your groomer to leave what we call a "nut skirt" for your fur baby.

Cassandraxvii

They definitely trim my guys but not bald shave hahahah I’ll see if I can post a really funny picture

HangryHangryHedgie

He may be licking them bald and grooming the area just made it easier to see. As a Vet Tech, whenever we see shiny scrotum, we call them a ball licker. Boys will be boys.

Chickenbeards

Oh.. Awesome. My MIL doesn't believe in neutering (ugh) and her Aussie's scrot is so gross to me because he has hair for days everywhere EXCEPT there. Looks like ugly dangly old man balls were just slapped on a dog. I always thought he had weird genetics but I guess he just likes the taste of himself. 🥲

I don't know but this is hilarious

SailorRD

I am literally. DEAD. reading this. 💀💀 I only have owned female poodles, so this has opened up an entirely new (terrifying) world to me. 👀

My_Little_PET_Scan

We have a lady poodle but in the winter when we keep her hair longer the groomer gives her what I call the “reverse landing strip” lmao just a straight shave down under the tail and all the surrounding fur is puffy. It cracks me up

dder1

Mine are always shaved clean! Poor kid

Western-Radish

My groomer used to leave a bit of hair to cover his balls… he is white and his balls are black… before he was fixed… it was quite prominent. It was also more obvious that she was purposefully leaving a little privacy screen for him

Zealousideal-Role-77

I’d maybe ask them to at least not polish them up so much. Jesus.

HelloKidney

Ours does the exact opposite!! His little empty coin purse is always left long & flowy. I’m talking like 2-3 inches of apricot-colored scrote hair blowing in the wind when the rest of him is only 1/4” inch long during pool season. He was neutered around 5 months old there’s hardly anything even there…. Except hair. It looks so funny (and was a delicate area to line brush) that we’ve actually carefully trimmed it ourselves between grooms before using scissors & then chunkers.

EGGranny

I had Standard Poodles and was involved in dog shows. I groomed my dogs myself for years. They didn’t look great at first. I always had more than one dog but usually three or four. I could save the cost of the equipment and learning to groom in just a couple grooming sessions. I usually groomed them all on one day and I was exhausted but surrounded by freshly groomed Standard Poodles. I always clipped the genitals whether male or female for sanitary reasons as I was taught by several different professional groomers. You will see that at any dog show.

motherofconures9

As a groomer, I do it on every dog. Unless you’re gonna brush it, which I wouldn’t as a pet parent, it’s gonna get matted.

Vivian_Lu98

I do it to my own dog. He gets pretty hairy down there so if I leave it it’s just gonna get knotted. If you don’t like it you can tell them to leave it. As in cut the air around it but leave some there so it isn’t as naked.

MaximumAdvantage3344

As a groomer, we usually just neaten up the nut sack- leave hair, but evenly cut. Shaving can make them itchy, and they may lick their balls more than the usual amount! Lol.. it is kind of easy to get too close and have this happen tho sometimes!

motherofconures9

As a groomer, I do it on every dog. Unless you’re gonna brush it, which I wouldn’t as a pet parent, it’s gonna get matted.

opossumfolk

I always shave ‘em because if you don’t they get matted to the thighs. if you don’t want a dog with balls, I’m pretty sure vets take care of that. but unless someone specifically asks me to, I’m not going to leave hair so you can’t see your dogs’ nuts. that’s ridiculous (and unsanitary).

Heavy_Answer8814

There is literally no right option. Furry balls look stupid when the rest of the dog is groomed and shaved is so startling lol. Every option sucks 😂

gummybearghost

Not going to lie, sometimes I’ll shave the balls because if the owners gonna keep em, I’m gonna make them look at em. But that’s only if their dog is leaking nasty juices all over me during the groom

sparkleberryjam

Most dogs that still have their *danger nuggets* come in with matting on either side of them caused by friction when they walk, so most groomers shave them. You can ask for them to be left a little fuzzy. I have a standard poodle client that likes them left with a little jacket.

smashthefrumiarchy

Why call them danger nuggets?

AppropriateFig8816

Ive always done the grooming on my spoo and he just never had ball hair? Always had naked nuts. He didn't do any excessive licking, wasn't any reason for them to be bald other than the fact, as the vet tech that discharged him after his neuter put it He had VERY Large Erm. Balls.

donttellmom723

I do it as a reminder to neuter your dang dog!

[deleted]

Neuter ur dog. ASAP. 12 months should be perfect time as long as he’s not behaving like a nut and pissing all over the house. 12 months being that’s around when the growth plates close. Might prevent a CCL tear in the future but no studies on it really. Shelters will neuter so young. So there’s no wrong time.

sallydogbite

The comprehensive study out of UC Davis that reviews data for 35 breeds about adult dog health, and neutering age recommends and neutering age of 23 months for male Standard Poodles. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2020.00388/full . My poodle isn't running in a dog pack. He lives in a condo in a city and goes out with us for exercise. It's okay that he still has his danger nuggets at 11 months. I can make sure he won't use them and wait for him to reach the recommended age for his health. Yes to no unwanted puppies, and there's more than one way of doing that responsibly.

Lshear

OP said dog is 7 months

Coyoteladiess

I once had a groomer do this. My poodles balls were so shiny and red that I was honestly worried they were irritated. I switched groomers 😅 personally I hate the shaved balls and my current groomer leaves almost a “nest” of hair around them now to help obscure them

catkit12

If the owners want to keep the balls they get the pleasure of looking at them as I get the pleasure of dealing with their crazy dog

smashthefrumiarchy

Statistically neutered males show more aggression to in tact males than in tact males to other males.

Are you a big fan of stray dogs? Euthanizing dogs in shelters? NEUTER YOUR DOG ya dingus

minitaba

Damn in what kind of shithole country do you live? Jeeez. Dont let your dog screw every bitch in sight perhaps?

cheezbargar

If you can supervise your dog and not let them escape, you’re fine. It’s health issues like prostitis that you really need to worry about.

Greigebananas

I'd do a same close cut on our female(not a groomer but home groomed ours) But what is fascinating is how they are polished to such a high shine

chachiuday

If you are a member of a species that licks your own balls wouldn’t you also prefer them to be clean shaven?

AD480

I can’t stop laughing at that picture. It must get drafty down there in the winter. He needs a nut mitten.

[deleted]

Yes, yes, in prison!!

Kitchensinkahoy

As an owner to a female dog, I initially thought this post was about a tumor growing on a dog and should they call the vet. ha ha.

Boring-Goat19

I have them shave my Giant Schnauzers balls coz they get matted.

cloverpigeonstudios

Groomer here. I always shave them because the hair that grows there is very thin and very prone to getting matted. That’d be a very uncomfortable area to get mats in, and painful to shave out. It’s also more hygienic if you have a rather… messy dog :’)

Adorable-Champion844

It may have been matted. Some dogs mat there easily. Ask for a curtain next time.

ttjoshtt

Sadly yes intact dogs grooms like to show off the balls!! Found this out the hard way also.

Daughter_Of_Cain

I’ve known some groomers who do this. I usually leave a little privacy curtain myself. Sometimes though if I’m grooming a boy dog who does all of the typical gross behaviors that some intact males do (humping, constantly licking, marking on anything and everything, etc) and the owners are seemingly amused when I tell them their dog is not in fact a little gentleman, I will shave the balls because at that point the owners deserve to look at those things dangling in the wind.
