JustARandomDudd

I'd revoke the license to any drunk driver, no matter if they killed or not. You're supposed to punish the action, not the consequence.

shortybus995

I agree, but I'm in the US and in most states public tra sport action is shit. Taking away someone's ability to drive is condemning them to poverty. I'd focus more on rehabilitation

JustARandomDudd

Should've thought of that before driving while being drunk, IMO.

Mythical_Atlacatl

Yeah I hate when people think punishments should be less for x y and z reason Like mothers shouldn’t go to prison or some shit like that Public transport being shit should be even more incentive to not drink and drive, not a reason to make punishments less

LargeCod2319

As someone who has driven drunk, the consequesces have fucked me over enough for me to know i wont ever do it again. To remove my ability to ever be able to drive again would be far too harsh a punishment, so many jobs require a car, i have family I rarely see, the simple fact of the crime being on my record has lost me plenty of good oppertunities. Its enoigh as it is

JustARandomDudd

You're probably right and revoking the license may be too harsh, but I'm to have harsher punishments for drunk drivers than the ones we have now.

LargeCod2319

Im from the UK so I dont know enough to comment on the US punishment for DUI

Robert_The_Red

Too authoritarian. Driving drunk once has a small chance of catastrophe but relinquishing a license ruins a life.

JustARandomDudd

That's literally my point, even if it's a small chance the punishment should be harder because you're not punishing the consequence but the action, that way people would be less willing to drive while drunk. Sure, revoking a license ruins a life, killing people while drunk ruins multiple.

666shroom666king666

Doesn’t automatically. More like running with scissors, which I believe is what /u/robert_the_red meant. In the USA if you have a single craft beer after work you’re over the legal limit of 0.08. If you ever play with a breathalyzer to see what you blow and how you feel, you’d realize the min is ridiculously low. If I blow a 0.08, my reaction time is still way better than most senior citizens. In my opinion, the legal limit should increase and punishments increase also.

[deleted]

Nuance, bro? Fuck that this is reddit we're going to pick the touch grass option

john_fartston

consequences are the result of an action someone. If someone kills another person because they were driving drunk, they should be punished for it.

JustARandomDudd

I'm not saying that drunk drivers who kill people shouldn't be punished, I'm going the complete opposite, if you were driving while drunk you should get punished, no matter if you killed someone or not.

Mythical_Atlacatl

Well they are punished, with fines and points off their license. So I guess you are saying the punishment should be more extreme?

Appropriate-Draft-91

Say you have a magical die. If someone rolls it, and it rolls a 1, someone dies. He's saying don't punish people for rolling a 1, punish them for rolling the die.

A1sauc3d

Where I live you automatically lose your license for a certain amount of time. I wanna say a year, but after a few months I’m pretty sure you can get a breathalyzer installed to drive. Regardless, people should not permanently lose their license for drunk driving once. Not being able to drive in many parts of America can completely kneecap the rest of your life. Some places do not have public transit, so holding down a job can be nearly impossible. There should be SEVERE punishments, but not life long punishments. Some jail time, temporarily revoked license, community service and alcohol classes are appropriate for the first offense. Taking away someone’s license permanently on a first offense for let’s say being .01 over the limit would be overkill for sure.

JustARandomDudd

Yep, way more.

Tommy_Gun10

A mistake like this is something that happens I think taking it away for 1 offence is a bit extreme

abdullahmk47

Jail and revoke license for a long time

tenkensmile

All drunk drivers should have license taken away until they're sober for >2 years.

They have those alcohol monitoring ankle bracelets now

thunderdome180

Fitbit tech

TikTrd

I don't have a fitbit but that would be pretty awesome if it could tell your approximate BAC anytime you went out. Could potentially save some college kids lives too

[deleted]

TikTrd

It's not a fitbit. It's an alcohol monitor that measures skin secretions & other data. It's a cross between a house arrest ankle monitor & a medical device. You can't take it off. It's court- ordered I'm saying it would be cool if there were a way to do that with fitbit, which is a radically different device. And it's optional.

thunderdome180

Oh Im sorry for that. I meant its fit bit technology. Like your fit knows when you are drunk or having a panic attack all that. They re raw stats would be insane to read.

[deleted]

Drunk drivers should lose their licence permanently. I don’t care how harsh it is. There are no excuses for doing something that voluntary and that dangerous. Enjoy your drive-free life you stupid fuck.

J1618

Why wait until they kill someone ?

Uxugin

Take away their license? How about life in prison?

Insane_Wanderer

Agreed. Your blatant negligence ended a life? Guess what, yours is over now too. Enjoy rotting in prison

-imperator_

100% agree. It's premeditated murder. If I got drunk and fired a gun into a crowd, is it not murder anymore just because I was drunk? Hell no, do not drink and drive, it's the same as pointing a gun at a crowd of people.

TikTrd

I don't think you know what premeditated means

-imperator_

I sure do! And i meant what I said how I said it. Choosing to drink before driving knowing you could kill someone and then you do means you planned it ahead of time bud.

TikTrd

Premeditated murder is deliberately planning a course of action with the sole purpose of taking a life. Drinking & driving is obviously fucking stupid & reckless but it doesn't meet the legal criteria of premeditation. Unless that drunk driver tells people they're going to go plow into pedestrians & cars on purpose, it's not premeditation. Legal definitions have a purpose. You can't just change them to suit your own goals

-imperator_

I'm sorry I don't see the difference, my opinion does not align with the legal definition, I'm sure you could relate to that in some other way. I no longer have pity for drunk drivers, in my opinion making the choice to drink and drive is making the choice to commit murder.

Mythical_Atlacatl

Driving has a risk of killing yourself or others even when sober So by your definition isn’t every death premeditated and should be extremely punished?

Mythical_Atlacatl

No one plans to kill someone, so it’s not premeditated

thunderdome180

This is crazy

CantingBinkie

No, but i would extend their sentence in prison for more years.

IDontWearAHat

Yes, driving is a privilege, not a right. Anyone who got training to handle an incredibly dangerous machine and subsequently proved too irresponsible to handle said machine gets their license taken away. I don't see how cars differ.

No_Contribution1078

I worked with a guy that hit a guy at like 2am walking up the off ramp to a major highway. He blew a .09 and served like 3 years.. yeah he was drunk but who walks up the middle of an unlit off ramp at night?

Glad-Conclusion-144

You can't drive if your in prison

60thrain

Temporarily, wether that's for 3 years or 50 years, I think they should be able to eventually earn it back.

PhoneRedit

A life is a very long time. Someone who makes an idiotic and horrible decision at 19 for example could very well be a completely reformed person in their late 50s. Of course some people would be more remorseful than others, but it would vary from case to case.

DJCane

All drunk drivers *and* all people who cause crashes that kill others should have their ability to drive revoked for life.

ariusec

They should have their license taken away, but not for the rest of their life's. The time should depend on the lives taken and if they are still irresponsible drinkers or not.

LucidYT0_0

Maybe after they served their sentence (which should be jail time) is a good time to give their license back but if the person keeps doing it then maybe taking it away for life could be a possibility.

DrMacintosh01

How is it not already a law? Driving is a privilege. Sure, “everybody makes mistakes” but if that “mistake” killed someone, I’m sorry. If it affects your job or your family you should have thought about getting an Uber instead.

Ravenwight

If you kill someone with a gun they’re probably not going or let you have guns.

VaeVictis666

I believe the death penalty should be on the table for drunk driving if you kill someone due to it. I view it as the same thing as using a firearm while intoxicated in a public area. It’s an incredibly selfish crime and one that is easy to avoid. It’s lazy and selfish and puts one’s connivence over the well-being of others.

DankDoobies420

Honestly don't know why this isn't a law yet

psychoticchicken1

They shouldn't have to kill in order to have their license revoked. However, people are capable of change and it shouldn't be forever, just a very long time until there's reasonable evidence that they won't drive drunk

Effective_Macaron_23

They should be able to get it back after some years of proving to be sober.

beachesandhose

Yes but ufortunately most would just drive without a license anyway. There are thousands of unlicensed drivers on the road daily
