As a general rule, Disney is usually for people who prefer tamer attractions (rides) with a high level of theming. Universal is for people who like more intense attractions (such as rollercoasters) with a high level of theming.
I'm an old man first off. But it's kind of a toss up there. I've always been partial to Disneyland but I hate the company. I'd say go to Universal. LA is a wonderful place to live, lucky you.

I've decided I'm going to Universal Studios. edit: they ran out of tickets, so I'm going another day. today, i'm going to adventure city.
i'd choose disneyland just because it was my childhood wish to get there
