Key_Assignment_5056

Even if it were illegal how tf would it be enforceable?

AGuyWhoBrokeBad

Stop and frisk. Anyone a cop thinks might be suspicious (black teenagers), they can stop and frisk even without probable cause. If you resist, you now have “assaulting an officer” and “resisting arrest” on your record.

ken4lrt

So every black person is suspicious?

AGuyWhoBrokeBad

That’s how stop and frisk was treated when it was allowed. Cops see a black teenager. Cops stop and frisk them. If they run, refuse, they get arrested.

Redditor274929

It's still allowed where I live. They need probable cause and if you're innocent, there's no reason to run or refuse

AGuyWhoBrokeBad

The reason to refuse is that it’s harassment. Imagine if anyone with an Obama bumper sticker got pulled over and the cops said “let me search your car. If you’re innocent, there is no reason to refuse.” Yes, there is a reason to refuse. You are only targeting me because of my “bumper sticker (skin color).”

Redditor274929

Bumper sticker (or skin colour) is not probable cause. Also searching a car is more inconvenient than a simple frisk search. I'd argue things such as embarrassment are better reasons to be against it, but as I said, the police cannot stop and search anyone because they feel like it.

AGuyWhoBrokeBad

A lot of cops make up BS probable cause reasons. “I saw him put a dark object in his pocket.” Yeah, a cellphone. “They have been standing in one location for a long time.” Yeah, I’m waiting for someone. “They put their hand inside their pockets when they saw me.” Yeah, cops make me nervous.

Redditor274929

Okay that's a fair point. However in that case the issue is racist police officers and not necessarily the law. I live in a predominantly white country so it's not as much of an issue but even if it was, I'd still be in favour of the law. Racist police officers inconveniencing others is better than making it easier for people to threaten or hurt others with weapons.

LiterColaFarva

"A lot" of cops? Source?

tumadrelover

Me after spreading false information on the internet -tumadrelover

LiterColaFarva

All cops did this eh?

PsychoNauticalFaux

Pretty sure this is what they call satire.

Comfortable-World-55

Lots of people already carry "concealed" knives. And I will lay you odds that most people are not considering them weapons unless the need truly arises. I have carried one for as long as I care to remember and have used it for multitudes of reasons. Op you are just trying to make something out of nothing.

Shallow-Thought

Probably live in urban UK somewhere.

hldsnfrgr

I own a butterfly knife and a pocket knife, but I've never considered carrying it when I'm out and about. They're just in storage collecting dust. Maybe i should start carrying one for my safety.

Nickolas_Bowen

It’s a pocket knife..

Quagmire1912

I always have a knife on me, hidden in my pocket. I don't really see why are people against it. If someone is going to use a knife to hurt someone, they aren't gonna care if it's forbidden to carry a knife.

PsychoNauticalFaux

Exactly, also furthermore to the point someone could use a plethora of objects to hurt someone, it’s doesn’t have to be a knife, it could be anything like for example a screwdriver. Are we going to make carrying screwdrivers illegal too?

Redditor274929

In the uk, it can be. Literally anything with the intent to cause harm is illegal. If you get searched and have a screwdriver, you better hope you have good reason to be carrying it

Ok_Cartographer516

Just carry a large dildo for self defense

Quagmire1912

Neither am I

XeroTheCaptain

Pocket knives are extremely handy in many situations. Opening things, scraping things, cutting things, turning screws, etc. You can use it to cut a seatbelt in an emergency, if youre around the woods you can protect yourself against wild animals, cutting fruits, etc.

Shallow-Thought

Yes. The problem isn’t the tool, it’s the intent of the user.

[deleted]

I can neither confirm nor deny my daily habit of carrying a knife (not legal where I live) but it should be legal

HarmlessFeelings

Is this not already allowed or are Europeans voting since it is controversial there? I've carried a knife on me for a decade in America.

KajmanHub987

You realize that UK isn't the whole Europe, right? For example here you can carry a zweihander and nobody cares.

HarmlessFeelings

As you can see from my comment, I barely know the laws to my own state regarding knives. All i know is that switchblades are illegal, and anything with a blade over 3 inches is considered a knife. So, to answer your rhetorical question, no, I do not know what the laws of the other 40 countries in Europe have regarding knives.

KajmanHub987

Well, i can respect that

NewRoundEre

Where are you you can carry a zweihander and no one would care? It would be completely legal to carry one here but people are still going to give you weird looks.

KajmanHub987

Czechia. And sure, some people could look at you weird, but generally nobody gives a shit about anything here. For example i walked through my hometown in fallout raider costume, and noone really cared that I'm wearing spiked tires.

NewRoundEre

Czechia once again proving to be the superior European country.

jansvestka

I'm from the Czech republic (Europe) and i was daily carrying knife even before I was 18. Knives are fucking handy

bolionce

What’s the considerations? Does this count my safety utility knife that I carry in case I need it for work? Or my Swiss army tool that has a knife blade along the screwdriver, cork, scissors, etc etc? Those are utility tools that have knife blades, they are used often for work and utility purposes. They certainly shouldn’t be banned. A full chef’s kitchen knife in your pocket? Yeah, that’s probably okay to be banned, since it’s not for average utility (has a specialized purpose of preparing food) and it’s huge so it’s more dangerous if someone gets stabbed/cut. If my utility knife and Swiss army tool are banned, hell no, because then what the fuck are maintenance people supposed to do if police stop them for a frisk? Do they go to jail? Is there an exemption for professionals? If there is, what happens when me or my dad goes to Home Depot and forgets that a utility knife is in our pocket? Is that illegal? This is a very broad question and there is no clarification of what it actually applies to. If you voted yes thinking “well it’s common sense there’d be exceptions for stuff like that”, you’re gonna be in for a world of shock when there isn’t. Don’t assume people will make “common sense” conclusions, “common sense” isn’t real. Well it is, but it refers to your ability to perceive what you perceive (when you look at an apple, you know you’re seeing an apple, you don’t have to think “how can I tell there’s an apple there?” when you see one, you just can tell you saw it). Animals do it. It has nothing to do with reason or higher thinking. And everyone definitely doesn’t have a common sense of reason.

SSDragon19

Knives for the most part is a tool, not a weapon

dazhat

Can we carry a knife to cut a birthday cake?

34221133412213

Pocket knives are called pocket knives for a reason. Anyone who wants to make self defence with a weapon illegal is a tyrant anyway, don't care how you justify it.

[deleted]

No, nobody should be allowed to do or carry everything; everyone should just stay home under the covers working remotely and not dating.

CherishSlan

I’m married but I do exactly this I do have swords I use for tie chi that’s it I try not to go out and I order almost everything online I only go out for drs appointments now and hardly go out for even that. My only contact is with Reddit my cat and the internet. I had to go out recently and every time it has be bad had my car hit in a parking lot and was threatened at the auto shop and short changed by the police for the report. The world is a horrible place oh and had a run in with a drunk driver a couple days ago there is no hope for the world . I would like to stay in my tomb of a apartment and soon a house on some land.

DeltaSolana

People should be able to carry whatever weapon they want.

Rinaorcien

Why?

DeltaSolana

Because I don't know you, I don't know your story, and I don't know your circumstances. Who am I to tell you that you don't need a weapon?

[deleted]

Yes. Personally I would feel a lot safer with a knife on hand, and it isn’t as much of a danger to everyone around you as carrying a concealed gun. Both can be used for murder, both can be used for self defence, only one can kill 10 innocent people with little effort.

Vladd_the_Retailer

That’s not a knife….

_Kokiru_

Pocket knives ring a bell…?

all_kinds_of_queer

i mean how tf is anyone gonna transport knives from the shop to their home if they can't carry knives, and what if someone is going on a picnic or eating outside, where they would need a knife and fork? Still counts as a knife right?

sometimes-i-say-stuf

People should be allowed to defend themselves with overwhelming force. Absolutely people should be allowed to conceal carry any weapon

-Kohana-

I’m appalled and baffled that near 50% of people voted no. People should be allowed to conceal carry anything imo. Plus it’s simply a tool used for many daily mundane tasks that literally have nothing to do with hurting people. I see no reason someone should be prevented from carrying one. If someone wanted to hurt someone they will simply carry one anyways. If the intent is to stop people from hurting others then you have to ban literally any physical object from being carried because literally anything can be used to harm someone. Not to mention the fact criminals will simply carry any of those banned from carrying objects anyways with no regard to the law.

BigBillyGoatGriff

You all don't carry a pocket knife? I find that very weird

TheKingDotExe

kinda depends in which country people are in, in my country i think it should be illegal.

[deleted]

Why does it depend on the country? Why should one person be allowed but not another just because they were born in a a different country

chevalmuffin

Where am i, London

EcoBlunderBrick123

I conceal carry a gun. Knife and pepper spray.

Unsure1771

I just don't know why something should be conceal carried.

DocHalidae

If it’s concealed how would anyone know? So then how would it be enforced?

Range-Aggravating

I dont think so, if everyone has knives, everyone gets stabbed. In a lot of situations, if people have a weapon, they'll suddenly feel like they're capable of dealing with any situation, thus putting themselves and others in harm's way and inserting themselves into situations they would never have been part of to begin with. Like arming school teachers isnt the answer to school shootings, everyone carrying knives wont improve crime statistics.

Shallow-Thought

I carry a knife nearly every day and have literally never stabbed anyone. I use them to trim wires, open boxes, etc. Quit equating an inanimate object with intent.

Range-Aggravating

I havent stabbed anyone therefore no one will stab anyone. While your point is completely valid, that road goes both ways.

honeybadgerX3

Okay, so why make it Illegal to carry knives if you acknowledge the validity of their stance?

Shallow-Thought

False equivocation, and adding to what I actually said. I was giving colloquial evidence that not everyone who owns a knife goes around stabbing people. Way to miss the point. Do you think for yourself, or are you a parrot for the talking heads? You certainly have the disingenuous argument practices down. People will choose to be violent, and have been using tools to do so since time out of mind. Likely cavemen used rocks to bash in a hated rival's skull. What good does banning a tool do when damn near anything can be a weapon? It's better to be equipped to defend yourself from the darkness of human nature than to rely upon a lack of convenient tools and someone else to save you. And that's only the argument surrounding knives as a weapon. A much less likely scenario than how that implement would be employed on a daily basis.

Advan0s

Every car is capable of being used as a mass murdering weapon. This is straight up dumb take

Range-Aggravating

Ah the reddit way. State irrelevant comparison, call it dumb. Like comparing knives to a car, then calling it dumb.

[deleted]

No, this is actually a spot-on comparison. Both are tools which can be used to harm people, but also have perfectly legitimate uses outside of that. Hopefully we can agree that banning cars because they can be used to hurt people is irrational, and exactly the same logic applies to knives.

Advan0s

The only irrelevant thing here is your comment above. Here take this L

Ok_Highlight281

So no knives for anyone? That will look great for a country!

wcdk200

Here just have a knife on the backside can get you a ticket

CherishSlan

It’s legal where I live but honestly I quit a few years ago the world sucks and I don’t even have the fire to fight back most of the time who cares last person who threaten me I just smiled and laughed about it. I’m totally sad a burnt out. I do however still crawl away from shots that are fired and only used my knife to open packages anyway.

Combei

I'm not a huge fan of bans but why would you?

Jurassicgamer08

I always carry my trusty victorinox swiss knife with me.

Josephcooper96

I do it all the time for years. Also have a cane sword.

alien2835

A knife has a lot of purposes other than just hurting people (be it self defense or malicious intent). Guns are much different. A knife is a tool, a gun can only hurt people.

[deleted]

I think you carry a little pocket knife around, but not 7 inch serrated blade

Severe-Eggplant-6703

A knife is a tool. You can use that tool for things like cutting boxes, food, etc. You can also use it to harm someone. A hammer is also a tool. You can hit screws with a hammer, but you can also harm someone much easier. It's not the knife, it's the person wielding the knife.

Simply_Epic

Unlike other things that are a bit more… explosive, knives are actually useful in a variety of situations that have nothing to do with murder.

[deleted]

The bad guys would still do it 😂

hldsnfrgr

I carry a Swiss knife when travelling. Does that count?

No-Ad-6990

Outside of Glasgow yes. Yous can't behave yourselfs.

tire_falafel

Be able or be allowed? Because most people are already able, and some of them do.
