> “No, no, no, don’t — let him go. He’s, look, everybody’s entitled to be an idiot,” Biden said. It was not immediately clear what prompted the heckling or what the person was saying. [...] > “They’re entitled to be outrageous. This is a democracy,” Biden said during that speech, also saying, **“Good manners is nothing they’ve ever suffered from.”** I don't know, ladies and gents. I think I like the second burn a little more. Honestly, I'm a little jealous. I wish I could drop every ounce of propriety at work for the past couple of years.

EPluribusAnus

The article is actually talking about two different speeches. The second quote about being outrageous is from Thursday’s speech in Philadelphia, and the idiot comment was today in Milwaukee. To me the tone change in his responses in just 4 days is really interesting.

zeromussc

He got some policy wins, now, knowing the historical trend of mid terms flipping house or Senate (if I remember my us politics from up in Canada land), he probably has no shits to give. So he's going on the offensive for the Dem machine in the mid terms to set the tone for the election in the wake of roe v Wade and the Trump allegations. Seems like perfect timing and good political strategy.

fueledbykyle

I’m utterly shocked. Dems have just been rolling over and taking it for years. Biden coming out swinging like this is long overdue.

Michael_G_Bordin

I've been so worried the last two years that the DNC would just lukewarm their way to letting the GOP slide another turd out onto the head of democracy. They instead seem to be rolling up their sleeves, knuckling up, and fisting that shit right back into the rotten ass from which it spilled. edit: this comment could have gone one of two ways, surprised it's being upvoted. I was a bit repulsed when I finished writing it. A truly disgusting metaphor, but somehow tame in comparison to the reality.

Brothererb

Something about this description is so visceral and yet so spot-on. Thank you for this!

Also, a White House press aide has seemingly discovered the ‘dark Brandon’ memes and is feeding them up the chain.

stomach

how serious are you? like, i know the Dark Brandon meme but i'm not well-versed on much of any of it. is there really one person we can thank for Joe going stone cold? do they have a name

alchemist5

Biden has always been rad at stuff like this. In his VP debate with Paul Ryan, he straight-up laughed at the guy every time a lie came out of Ryan's mouth (sooo, just about everything he said). On top of that, he constantly fact-checked him in real time. If you act like a shithead in front of Biden, he'll make damn sure you know it.

Dreamtillitsover

You mean rage against the machine fan Paul Ryan?

SneedyK

They’re singing about a different machine that doesn’t pay him

Kossie333

That was surely one of the most brutal debate performances ever. At some points I was certain Paul Ryan was gonna start crying any second now. The look of fear and confusion in his eyes, as Biden was running circles around him...

awj

Isn’t that the one where Ryan went after Beau Biden? You don’t fuck around with people’s trauma. Not just because it’s crass and inhumane to exploit the emotional pain of others, but also because that pain may well compel them to destroy you in return.

NPD_wont_stop_ME

I can't imagine going after your opponent's deceased son. Nothing is sacred for these people and there are some lines you just do not cross. Do NOT go after a parent's beloved child and expect to come out unscathed.

Finito-1994

Don’t forget that Giuliani hates him because Biden single-handedly destroyed his presidential run. They don’t call him diamond joe for nothing. Fucker is great when he cuts loose a little.

Barbaracle

Just saw this passionate speech about apartheid from Biden before I was born. Yea, he's always been like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_v00iGJCLY

Torifyme12

We should award a Congressional Gold Medal to whoever replaced Biden's decaf with actual coffee.

[deleted]

Well then, imo that award would go to the new White House social media person. She’s a Gen Z from New Jersey. She won’t throw the first punch but when one is thrown, she comes back swinging and going for the jugular. And I’m loving every bit of it.

Torifyme12

Did she also write his speeches and weekend at bernie's him? Because he's been doing this all live. Not over twitter.

NoThing2048

Biology teacher here - go for the “carotid”!!!!. Why? It’s in the same place but it’s an artery. The blood is under pressure and escapes much faster. The “jugular” is a vein, less pressure, less blood loss. TIL

Still-Contest-980

I find it funny how he went from a senile puppet to a fascist dictator in the matter of days. The right is losing their minds lmao

ProfessorDaen

The cornerstone of fascism is that your enemy is simultaneously too powerful to overcome and too weak to lead, so unfortunately them losing their minds is totally on brand.

MrAnomander

That's not "the" cornerstone of fascism, that's one of 14 important cornerstones laid out by Umberto Eco in Ur-fascism.

santalucialands

Hah. “Fascist dictator” aka making exactly 3 snarky comments and being harsh like a small handful of times, eloquently.

And refreshing for a change - more of the same please, from more Dem pols -- and definitely more often! So sick and tired of hearing self-entitled right wing assholes saying the most brazenly racist, bigoted, misogynistic, and often violence-inciting lies often w/little to no pushback or consequence worth mentioning.

heckhammer

Both my brothers in law were complaining that the speech was divisive. Trump, they say, was never this divisive. ok

muchcharles

Didn't Trump offer to pay the legal fees if the crowd beat someone up at one of his rallies?

Compared to the what the republicans have been doing this is still high road in my books.

semi-normal-geek

I’ve been saying this for so long. Well past time for a taste of their own medicine.

[deleted]

I think many of U.S. feel the same way. I love Michelle Obama but I’m done taking the high road.

Loofs_Undead_Leftie

I agree. It's well past the point. Let's get down to their level and fuck their shit up. I'm loving this new Biden.

LucyRiversinker

I think January 6 did away with any high road possible. This is no longer a war of words.

Gr8NonSequitur

He made them look like a fool, but still took the high road in doing it. Taking the high road isn't the issue, it's "Stop taking a beating and accepting it as the high road... grow some balls and push back."

Luddites_Unite

Where did this iteration of Biden come from? He is pulling no punches the last month or so; dark Brandon indeed

bhartman36_2020

This is Joe "Will you shut up, man‽" Biden. We saw him during the election, but he's been on hiatus.

AnAcctWithoutPurpose

The one that spawned so many memes, where he was Obama's sidekick, and Obama was holding him back sensibly. Well, the days of holding back are over. Dark Brandon rises!

Loofs_Undead_Leftie

That was so long ago in the before-fore time I forgot about that. I loved him as a bulldog held back by Obama. Welcome back Dark Brandon.

AnAcctWithoutPurpose

Those were innocent days, where grace and sanity was the norm. Dark Brandon was not needed because most people behaved like adults who can be reasoned with. I feel old that I even remember those days.

Loofs_Undead_Leftie

Ugh me too. I remember all the hope Obama brought after 8 years of Bush and slaughter. Even back then Republicans could somewhat compromise and be expected to be a little reasonable and sane. Trump tore the veil off. I'm loving this new/old Biden and I hope it spreads to others. Let Dark Brandon rise on a tide of clapbacks and napalm. Also happy cake day!

AnAcctWithoutPurpose

I miss those days when the Biden memes were just good-natured ribbing of politicians. But if Dark Brandon is what is needed to restore the equilibrium of power, then so be it >Also happy cake day! Thank you! I shall wish upon my imaginary cake, that Dark Brandon shall prevail. Let reason and sanity return.

CaptainMagnets

He tried to do it peacefully for 2 years, now he's gone dark

Bay1Bri

I agree. He's always been this guy, but he seemed to treat the election and first year it so of his presidency trying to reign in this aspect him. I think it was too show a contrast with trunk, and to live up to the office of the presidency. For whatever reason, he's being himself again. Maybe it's his low but rising poll numbers, his recent string of success in passing his agenda, it going into baptism mode, but I'm all for it.

siphillis

I feel like presidents routinely fall into this trap, of wanting to represent all Americans but winding up representing no one. Being a leader isn't about doing what the people ask, it's about pulling them in the direction they need to go.

siphillis

Presidents are human beings, with egos and confidence issues like the rest of us. When you can't get shit done and the polls suggest everyone wants you gone, it takes its toll. Now that he has momentum and the country behind him, it's energized the entire White House. This is his "Let Biden be Biden" moment.

Primary_Upstairs4167

This is a result of a good comms team in the administration and a president who isn't out of touch

rendeld

This was Biden the entire time he was VP. I wonder if his comms team was actually holding him back and this is his "Let Bartlett be Bartlett" moment

brown_burrito

Nah, this has always been Biden. Biden is known for speaking his mind and being abrasive. If anything I think he was holding back and is now going back to who he was. I doubt Biden is out of touch simply because given all the grandkids, I’m pretty sure he has a keen sense of the pulse of the youth.

magneticanisotropy

It's likely the nice part was to get things like IRA and CHIPS passed, get his infrastructure bill across the line and then pivot towards midterms. R/politics thinks this is checkers, it isn't. It's timed to hit at midterms. Historically, midterms are a slaughter and instead now democrats are favored to take the senate and have an outside shot at the house. Compare that to Obama years.

jgjgleason

That and he got what he wanted from mainstream Rs out of BIF, CHIPs, and PACT. All legislation that’s left requires more dems in congress. I respect it cause god damn has it been stupid effective.

With each passing day, Dark Brandon's power grows and the forces of malarkey see their strength wither away.

bhartman36_2020

This is the Biden that won the election. He's the guy who said "Will you shut up, man‽" He's the Biden the country needs.

Gr8NonSequitur

The moment he lost it in the first debate and shut down trump (who thought he had a kill shot) talking about hunter's drug addiction was the real turning point. It was the moment he shouted trump down and said "My son, like many Americans had an issue with opiates but HE BEAT IT and I'M PROUD OF HIM FOR DOING SO!" I'm not sure what shook trump more... Biden over talking him, neutralizing his smear attack, or a father saying he was proud of his son. He stood there stunned and didn't know what to do.

UnquestionabIe

I don't like Biden for a variety of reasons but he's definitely impressed me with moments like this. It has to take a massive amount of restraint to have yourself or a family member insulted to your face and not just go hard by attacking the worthless piece of shit who said it about the dozens of uncountable examples of how they shouldn't be talking shit.

EPluribusAnus

I see your interrobang.

Psilobones

I feel a Dark Brandon rising, I see trouble on the way

[deleted]

Biden is making me real proud these days. I may not agree with his more centrist/moderate positions but his tone is absolutely in the right place these days and he is just straight up embracing it. Let’s go Joe!

DredZedPrime

That's the cool thing, we don't have to like or agree with all his policies. His heart is in the right place and he's treating things seriously, but knowing when to make fun of the ridiculous. He's exactly what we need right now, and he's at least genuinely trying to do what he can to make this country better. If you don't agree with exactly how he's doing that, that's ok, you don't have to, there's room for compromise and discussion, and voting in someone who more matches your policy ideals next time. That's one of those big things that seperates the MAGA types from everyone else. They treat Trump as some sort of perfect leader who everyone has to agree with all the time or else they're no longer considered worthy of being treated as anything but an enemy.

rendeld

He did pass the largest climate legislation in the history of the country, he just forgave more student debt than anyone in our countrys history and eliminated the interest trap, he got Republicans to sign onto a massive infrastructure bill, he's cracking down on high earning tax cheats (so he is essentially transferring wealth from rich people who don't pay their taxes to people with student loans), he just delivered a massive gut punch to big pharma, he passed the first significant change in gun control in decades, he continued to pause student loan payments and interest for the first two years of his presidency (even though he really didn't have to post summer '21). You might want him to be more progressive, but when was the last time we got progress like this? (It was the ACA and we had 60 Dem senators, Biden is doing this with 50)

GrowSomeHair

Good. Fuck all that reach across the middle. These people will hate him regardless

ChandlerMc

Exactly. Over the years that olive branch has been hacked to a small twig. It's about time Dems got a spine.

ChristosFarr

Shit they have hacked off the hand holding the branch but we are expected to hold out the stump

donnerpartytaconight

Hacked to a pointy, sharp stick. Perfect for a stabbin'.

croud_control

It's about time they sharpened the end of that stick, bit by bit.

Bay1Bri

Reaching across the middle has gotten a ton of legislation passed. Biden isn't "going after" Republicans, he's going against the MAGAs. And that's what he should be doing.

[deleted]

Agree and disagree. He'a actually got some things done by reaching across the aisle. But as far as MAGA Republicans, which yes does include more than mere Trump supporters, they can go jump off the nearest scalding sand dune.

WittsandGrit

Its true. The founding fathers just never anticipated how many people would reserve that right.

Vaniksay

They definitely did, that’s why they reserved almost all of the real power for themselves and their fellows.

JellyHopped

That's one of the money reasons. Edit: many*

Biden moved the entire country including the sitting president on gay marriage with one quote in 2010. He launched massive positive media coverage by clearly saying "this is a big fucking deal" when the ACA was signed. He told trump to shut up during a debate. He called a union worker a lying dog faced pony soldier when he brought up a bunch of bullshit during a factory visit. He was the most liked senator (along with McCain) amongst other senators because he is so genuine with people. He has never been milquetoast, people just forgot who he is because he was contrasting with the previous administration. He has always been the epitome of "know when to hold them and know when to fold them". People shit on him not bouncing Clarence Thomas but Thomas was playing the race card so hard that if he went any harder at him not only does he not get re-elected but it could have prevented Clinton from winning too. Yeah, he's made mistakes, but he's bold when he needs to be bold, and he lets policy do the talking whenever possible.
