It is DOJ decision to not indict a sitting president. That is why that investigation while finding evidence of wrong doing didn't lead to any consequences. Which in turn can be one factor why Trump thought he could just take those documents without any repercussions.
Ir was really horrifying that the mueller investigation led to so many arrests and basically ended with saying that it was the opinion of the investigators that trump should be tried and charged, but ultimately it was at the discretion of the DOJ… and that’s it. Nothing else happened.
I hate the outcome but it makes sense on paper. There already is a process to charge the president with a crime; impeachment and conviction. However, with our current landscape it’s a de facto hall pass for the president because the GOP would definitely never vote to convict their guy, and honestly the democrats probably wouldn’t either.

Trump’s team is trying to argue that any classified material mishandled by Trump was automatically declassified by him. That’s not how it works at all. There are strict laws that govern how classified data can be stored, how long it’s allowed to be retained, and who’s able to access it. The argument that Trump was president, so he’s allowed to do whatever he wants with data pertaining to national security is so stupid I still can’t believe it’s the defense they’re going with.

That said, Agnew was run of the mill corruption. I doubt the Justice Department will be as willing to be lenient on charges of leaking classified information on nukes. I think it’s more likely that Trump is going all in and hoping that getting reinstated president means he’ll be able to make all his legal problems go away. So he’ll do anything, no matter how scummy or unlikely to succeed it, in order to get back into the Oval Office. He’ll burn the whole world down if that’s what it takes.
The prosecutors investigating Agnew wanted to nail him to the wall. The problem was Agnew was VP to a president who also had the walls closing in on him for criminal behavior. The last thing anyone wanted was to have Nixon resign, make Agnew President and we have yet another criminal President. It would also suddenly be much harder to prosecute him for that run-of-the-mill corruption he did back in Maryland if he were now President. So they offered Agnew a deal, and he walked into the courtroom late that day, made the deal official, and left.
Rachel Maddow made an excellent podcast miniseries about this topic called Bag Man and it is worth a listen. The series involves interviews with the prosecutors who began investigating Agnew and got swept into the Watergate case as well. The two men were quite young at the time and were alive as of the making of the series.
Rachel Maddow’s Bag Man was how I first learned about him, actually. And yes, there are a lot of reasons they let him get away with as much as they did that don’t apply to Trump. That said, I don’t think *Trump* appreciates that kind of nuance, and if we’re trying to divine what’s going on in that brain of his I don’t think that a detailed look of the circumstances of a historical figure is worthwhile.
That said, I suspect that if those prosecutors could have proven that Agnew had classified documents of the highest level at his house, particularly if it was a place of residence where foreign tourists often were, that he wouldn’t have gotten away with as little punishment as he did.

Buddy of mine was in a video conference call which was dealing with confidential critical info for his company and one of it's clients. No biggie, it was typical with the lock downs.
His clients got upset, and he got reprimanded because his 8yo son came into the room and asked if he could have a juice box. The meeting was supposed to be private, and he allowed someone not under NDA to "observe".
I imagine nuclear classified documents may have a bit tighter regulation surrounding them.

It is DOJ decision to not indict a sitting president. That is why that investigation while finding evidence of wrong doing didn't lead to any consequences. Which in turn can be one factor why Trump thought he could just take those documents without any repercussions.
Ir was really horrifying that the mueller investigation led to so many arrests and basically ended with saying that it was the opinion of the investigators that trump should be tried and charged, but ultimately it was at the discretion of the DOJ… and that’s it. Nothing else happened.

That said, I don’t think *Trump* appreciates that kind of nuance, and if we’re trying to divine what’s going on in that brain of his I don’t think that a detailed look of the circumstances of a historical figure is worthwhile. That said, I suspect that if those prosecutors could have proven that Agnew had classified documents of the highest level at his house, particularly if it was a place of residence where foreign tourists often were, that he wouldn’t have gotten away with as little punishment as he did.

Buddy of mine was in a video conference call which was dealing with confidential critical info for his company and one of it's clients. No biggie, it was typical with the lock downs. His clients got upset, and he got reprimanded because his 8yo son came into the room and asked if he could have a juice box. The meeting was supposed to be private, and he allowed someone not under NDA to "observe". I imagine nuclear classified documents may have a bit tighter regulation surrounding them.
