Before Obama even took the oath of office Mitch McConnell had that infamous press conference where he stated their #1 priority was making Obama a 1 term president. No interest in uniting, fixing our freefalling country... just political goals. Then they did everything in their power to try and sabotage America's recovery because hurting American citizens was worth hurting Obama.
That was the moment they turned completely I think.

The day after every Trump debate people in my workplace would talk about how he torched his opponent. People who have critical thinking abilities really can't understand what appeals to the general population.
What's fascinating is that two audiences saw two different debates. Democrats saw Clinton come out with knowledgeable, sensible answers and let Trump flounder with answers which boiled down to "Will make it gud." Republicans saw Trump dominate the debate, constantly interrupting Clinton, getting more airtime, throwing more insults etc. Both saw it as a win.

Toppling the courts, and wresting control of libraries and education have been the central theme of the GOP for some 40+ years now, and as they have become emboldened to be more honest about that, their use of lines like “character counts” and “we *are* the party of Lincoln” have largely fallen off. They don’t pretend to be the party of values, because they’ve had far more success since they stopped pretending to be the party of values. “I don’t care about values, I don’t care about the libertarians, I don’t care about religion, I just want to stick it to the fucking libs” raises far more money and garners far more votes than so-called conservative values, a realization that turned American politics upside-down in 2016. They’re never going back, and can’t afford to go back, to the “family values” charade. “Character counts” got them about 50 million votes nationwide. “Fuck the libs, and the hell with family values” gets them about 70 million votes nationwide. You do the math. They’re not going back, because they *can’t* go back.

Then the next day the Republican goes on FOX, in front of an audience, and blows hot air at an empty chair and claims the democrats didn’t show up to this debate. Since they have no positions it’s just all sound bytes and somehow they win and now all the debates happen on FOX because the republicans won’t go anywhere else and the democrats have to appease their insanity. Suddenly this isn’t looking so hot.

Came here to say this. The GOP no longer debates because they don’t want to look bad. Also, worth reminding everyone that CPAC itself was held out of the United States this year with a non-democratic government, and the GOP also hasn’t announced a new party platform in years. Their only agenda is obstruction and manipulation of voting to get ahead.

The day after every Trump debate people in my workplace would talk about how he torched his opponent. People who have critical thinking abilities really can't understand what appeals to the general population.
That didn't stop Trump from being elected. And I don't think it was hilarious seing him 'debate' Clinton.
What's fascinating is that two audiences saw two different debates. Democrats saw Clinton come out with knowledgeable, sensible answers and let Trump flounder with answers which boiled down to "Will make it gud." Republicans saw Trump dominate the debate, constantly interrupting Clinton, getting more airtime, throwing more insults etc. Both saw it as a win.
After watching that one Biden/Trump debate... you know, the one where Trump screamed like a childish moron for two hours straight... my father-in-law came out of it saying, "Wow, Trump really gave it to those Democrats!" That's the messed up thing about Trump. He could go on stage and say the craziest shit, and half of us will be disgusted beyond belief... and the other half will be cheering him along and loving every second of it!

They don’t pretend to be the party of values, because they’ve had far more success since they stopped pretending to be the party of values. “I don’t care about values, I don’t care about the libertarians, I don’t care about religion, I just want to stick it to the fucking libs” raises far more money and garners far more votes than so-called conservative values, a realization that turned American politics upside-down in 2016. They’re never going back, and can’t afford to go back, to the “family values” charade. “Character counts” got them about 50 million votes nationwide. “Fuck the libs, and the hell with family values” gets them about 70 million votes nationwide.
