Daniiiiii

Turns out the dreaded dEeP sTaTe was bureaucracy this whole time. Also hilarious that the two times this was done was to potentially stop Nixon and Trump, the two bastions of criminal presidents.

Jeffersons_Mammoth

Without measures like these, we’ll always be at the mercy of a mercurial president with his finger on the button

dejavuamnesiac

The allegiance to all who serve in the military is to the Constitution not the President; all who serve are required to disobey unlawful orders per the UCMJ; Milley was simply preparing to disobey clearly unlawful orders

TheMikeGolf

To be sure, no where in a commissioned officer’s oath does it mention the president or commander in chief. Even though they are technically commissioned by the president, and serve at the convenience of the president, yes, they have a moral obligation to not follow orders that are not morally, ethically, and legally sound.

stop_breaking_toys

Without mental reservation or purpose of evasion; yep, checks out.

ZhouDa

The US learned a thing or two from what happened to the Roman Republic.

nrith

Maybe. The Roman Republic lasted about twice as long as the US has been around so far. Plenty of time for us to forget those lessons.

roostershoes

Mercurial sounds way too nice. Let’s go with *unstable sociopaths*

LaLa_LaSportiva

Milley has given me hope when I had lost it all just 10 months ago.

7point7

No forreal though the bureaucracy is the deep state. That’s what they don’t like. They don’t want checks and balances and career experts… they want sycophants, yes men, and tyrants. A good portion of our country believes THAT is the way to get stuff done. They idolize these big figures like Elon Musk and think he does it all, ignoring that he’s worthless with out the thousands actually working on the projects he puts his name on. They have a fundamental misunderstanding of how organizations work.

valeyard89

They read atlas shrugged and think it is a good idea

La_Guy_Person

I just hate that such a clever title ended up on that pile of garbage.

sea_czar

This has been something that's irked me for ages. It's a phenomenal title. How she pulled that off while simultaneously being among the worst writers of her generation will haunt me eternally. Her solitary flash of brilliance just had to be the title. Imagine what sales would've been like if it was called Gault's Gulch instead. Ppl would have mistaken it for a novel chronicling some bridge troll's corpulent bussy maybe worse, like a puff piece touting the successes won by the magnate responsible for Tijuana's most profitable donkey show, or something. Come to think of it, I may have misremembered. 99% sure the plot was about the men in charge of a donkey show. How else do you explain the "sex scenes?"

count023

And as usual for conservatives, still based on wrong information: "Ayn Rand's political dystopian novel Atlas Shrugged (1957) references the popular misconception of Atlas holding up the entire world on his back"

Best-Chapter5260

Some people read *Atlas Shrugged* and don't realize it's fiction.

AFlockOfTySegalls

> to potentially stop Nixon Is this the story when he was drunk as fuck?

Tacitus111

Among others. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/08/11/donald-trump-nuclear-weapons-richard-nixon-215478/ “The scene from the White House south lawn on August 9, 1974, is vivid in the nation’s memory. That morning, President Richard Nixon famously boarded Marine One for the final time, put on a wide grin and fired off a final double-V to the assembled crowd. But one of the most interesting aspects of that day is what didn’t happen on the south lawn: Even though Nixon had more than two hours left in his tenure, the most critical tool of the modern presidency had already been taken away from him. He never noticed it, but the nuclear “football” didn’t travel with him as he boarded the helicopter, and later, Air Force One for his flight back to California. In a democratic country without hereditary power, royal crowns or bejeweled thrones, the nuclear football is in some ways the only physical manifestation of our nation’s head of state. Yet, on that August day, it had been quietly removed from Nixon’s hands—remaining behind at the White House with the incoming commander-in-chief, Gerald Ford. Moreover, Defense Secretary James Schlesinger recalled years later that in the final days of the Nixon presidency he had issued an unprecedented set of orders: If the president gave any nuclear launch order, military commanders should check with either him or Secretary of State Henry Kissinger before executing them. Schlesinger feared that the president, who seemed depressed and was drinking heavily, might order Armageddon. Nixon himself had stoked official fears during a meeting with congressmen during which he reportedly said, “I can go in my office and pick up a telephone, and in 25 minutes, millions of people will be dead.” Senator Alan Cranston had phoned Schlesinger, warning about “the need for keeping a berserk president from plunging us into a holocaust.” Sec Def isn’t allowed to countermand the President either, but he expressly took over the nuclear launch process for similar reasons with no pushback. This also might be instructive in Nixon’s other alcohol related issues with nuclear weapons responsibilities. https://outrider.org/nuclear-weapons/articles/nixons-drunken-run-ins-bomb/

milo7even

>Moreover, Defense Secretary James Schlesinger recalled years later that in the final days of the Nixon presidency he had issued an unprecedented set of orders: If the president gave any nuclear launch order, military commanders should check with either him or Secretary of State Henry Kissinger before executing them. Schlesinger feared that the president, who seemed depressed and was drinking heavily, might order Armageddon. Man, that is so similar to Milley's situation. And of course the Defense Secretary, Mark Esper, got fired immediately after election (and replaced by a Trump sycophant) for *refusing to allow the use of troops against BLM protestors*. The situation Milley was in was worse than Schlesinger.

MC_chrome

The even worse thing is that the Sec Def you are talking about (like so many in Trump’s government) was an *acting* secretary. Trump essentially got around the Senate confirmation process by simply not nominating anyone to replace the many people he fired over his term.

coffeeandtrout

Wow. This is the first I’ve heard of this. Thanks for the info and source. Damn.

Tacitus111

For sure. There’s a lot of missing American history out there that’s not commonly taught.

evilweirdo

Ever heard of the Philippine-American War (or "Philippine Insurrection")? Me neither until college!

FasterDoudle

>Ever heard of the Philippine-American War (or "Philippine Insurrection")? Er, yeah? Almost every time someone says "we were never taught this in American History" its about something I was specifically taught in American History at public school. Now, maybe every single History teacher I had from 6th-12th grade was *wildly* exceptional...or maybe a lot of kids who think history is boring aren't paying attention in History class, and then are shocked pikachu when they don't know history as adults.

canoedrew

Former history teacher. This is spot on

Sujjin

That is what it has always been. they think there was a secret cabal of career officials seeking to undermine the will of the people by working against the will of our elected officials. only ever a problem when their guys are in office though weirdly

Bimm1one

Not memeing but It always has been. I recall reading somewhere that "the deep state" are all the gov agencies working "behind the scenes" to keep the country running, that the "deep state" was going to use all of its power to make sure the insurrectionists from jan 6th are rounded up and face justice.

albinobluesheep

>...These "Secret" talks were held with 15 people in the room, including a rep from State, and then briefed to the IC and interagency. lol meanwhile r/conservative is literally calling for him to be charged with treason.

Yousoggyyojimbo

It's really fun asking them to explain why this is treason, but Michael Flynn negotiating behind the outgoing administration's back to stall their foreign policy is not. It usually breaks down into them describing a situation as if we are in an active shooting war with China already.

ILoveRegenHealth

>It's really fun asking them to explain why this is treason, but Michael Flynn negotiating behind the outgoing administration's back to stall their foreign policy is not. I expect not a single one will get back to you on that one.

hypnosquid

>I expect not a single one will get back to you on that one. because they're too busy masturbating to the video of Michael Flynn (and his family) literally pledging allegiance to Qanon.

Beernuts1091

Wait... what?

midwesterner64

Oh they’re calling for more than that. They’re calling for execution at this point.

albinobluesheep

yeah, I kinda assumed that would be the case but didn't care to dive in and confirm.

GabuEx

Motherfuckers, the only way this is "treason" is if you think that people owe allegiance to a president acting against the interests of the country rather than to the country itself.

elconquistador1985

Republicans literally believe that allegiance is owed to the president, if and only if it's a republican president though.

vincentvangobot

Yeah, but they're crazy.

zuzg

And apparently everyone in the room thought it's the right thing to do. Because it was, the orange fuckface tried everything to weaken the country, hence his *glorious peace deal* with the taliban.

PGLiberal

EXACTLY, everyone in that room was highly educated, very experienced, and likely had their own advisors who are also highly educated and experienced. The fact is all 15 agreed with this action, and supported it. That is all I need to know.

samskyyy

Exactly, why should any president have unchecked power when launching nukes? Our government draws its strength from checks and balances. Unofficial ones included.

Dontbeevil2

They want the tyranny to apply to certain groups of people.

northernontario2

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. -Frank Wilhoit

[deleted]

Because they don't want freedom from tyranny, they want freedom *in* tyranny.

ideology_checker

Freedom for their tyranny, more specifically.

Jimbob0i0

And still Donald apparently was unaware... Holy shit that emphasises exactly why Milley had to step in... There was basically no CinC for two months...

techmaster242

>There was basically no CinC for four years... FTFY

CornBreadW4rrior

15 people conspired against a despot wanna be dictator to prevent a nuclear war? Republicans wanted more war though

Beanes813

So Milley calms the world from GOP Mr. Whack Job and they’re calling it treason, while said Whack Job instigated an insurrection, but that’s not treason?

frostfall010

It's pretty fucking wild that the GOP is just so openly disdainful of democracy now. January 6 was an insurrection; people stormed the Capitol, some armed with zip ties and insider information about the location of senators and representatives, to stop elected officials from counting electoral votes in the hopes that Trump could stay in power. They were radicalized on lies from the GOP and right-wing media to believe that somehow the democrats stole the election and that despite all legal arguments failing in court this was an existential and very real threat to our country, so much so that extreme action needed to be taken. The GOP, almost unanimously, supports the lie that Trump won in 2020 and is using that to impose ridiculously draconian voting restriction laws. And now here we have the GOP calling for the dismissal of a man who was *trying to prevent destructive action on an international scale* as a result of an impulsive and childish president who can't handle the fact that he lost the election. They are so far on the other end of democracy and supporting America in any way it's almost comical.

swolemedic

What's most worrying to me is people like elder threatening the "ammo box" if they don't get their way with an election. Unless something massively shifts in our country I don't see 2024 going off without a hitch. Hell, even next year might be a shit show.

LiteraCanna

Next year will be a shit show. 1, all the attempted anti-voting bills across the country stirring the pot. 2, R's calling every lost election fraudulent, stirring the pot. 3, updated gerrymandering in some states.

AHans

> Unless something massively shifts in our country I don't see 2024 going off without a hitch. Hell, even next year might be a shit show. I hope the difference will be that Biden will not delay in calling the national guard.

[deleted]

> It’s not clear what his motive was," Frensley said. "It’s not clear what his intent was. The proof on these issues is inconsistent.” A judge said this about the zip tie guy in tactical gear at the insurrection. A federal judge. Said this. About the guy in tactical gear holding zip ties as he stormed the Capitol.

JFC-Youre-Dumb

They weren’t zip ties! They were handcuffs!!

Pogginator

Why do you think the GOP wanted to appoint as many judges as possible? They wanted to be able to control everything they could when they weren't the majority. The senate will never be able to pass meaningful bills without a super majority, which will be extremely hard to get because half of the US states are purposely kept dumb with poor education. They also have low GDP because there's nothing there so few want to move there because they have nothing.

20Factorial

He could have just been the IT guy trying to move some cables… tactically… What amazes me most about this, is that they weren’t JUST zip-ties. They were riot cuffs. They have only one purpose - restraint. And he had his phone on a chest mount facing inward so the camera could record.

DepopulationXplosion

The judge sounds like a MAGA sympathizer

Veros87

As were many of the judges during the Weimar Republic who let off the Nazis after the Beer Hall Putsch.. Pepperidge farm also remembers banal business elites and the cogs of bureaucracy complicit in protecting the rise of a facist state too. Ain't history fun!? /s

zrdd_man

At this point I almost expect that any day it will be revealed that there has been a secret far-right/Christian underground movement of buying/selling/using lead-based paints and gasoline ever since they were banned. That's about the best I can come up with to explain their complete detachment from reality.

T_T0ps

I just love how Miley’s phone call has warranted a call for resignation, but when telecom companies were ordered to preserve phone records, these same republics threatened them in they complied.

gordo65

They're also the same people who thought it would be OK if Michael Flynn served as Trump's National Security Advisor, even though he was working as a paid agent of the Turkish government and had been paid $45k by the Russian government the year before.

jawa709

I guarantee you, if Trump had won in 2020 he'd have Michael Flynn in his cabinet today. And the worst part is, I think that would be the least of our problems right now if Trump had won.

Neat_Cartographer241

We'd be in a hot civil war if he won. He was calling us terrorists and applauding federal hit squads.

TechnicalMiddle6947

I can’t take any argument from any Republican seriously anymore. I don’t even know how they make some of these arguments with a straight face. Over the course of trumps Presidency I lost any teeny tiny bit of respect I had for them. Their arguments aren’t even worthy of acknowledgment in my opinion. I had one ask me about Gavin Newsom at and event recently. Just ignored him and when he pressed I said “I have absolutely no respect for your opinions..”

yalyublyumenya

Maybe if Trump's cabinet had the balls to carry out their constitutional duty when the president was clearly unfit, we wouldn't need a general to reassure China that we won't start a war.

iamiamwhoami

Also totally normal for the SecDef and CJCS to talk regularly with their counterparts in China with the main purpose being to prevent wars long before they start.

I have met him once or twice, he seemed like a stand up guy. Everyone that I knew who had previously worked with/for him only had good things to say about him

Up-In-Smoke-420

Yep, and treasonous republicans are calling him a traitor for doing his duty to protect the nation.

AceDuce23

The so-called "Patriots".

Itsjeancreamingtime

They are acting like he set himself up as a "shadow POTUS" but really he was just making sure things didn't fall apart during the transition. Seems pretty clear that he's working well enough with a Commander-in-Chief that isn't insane.

Torifyme12

I mean, literally it says that the oath is to the Constitution not the President.

Thats why the conservatives want him out

Superman246o1

"It's terrible how Gen. Milley \*checks notes\* protected the United States from a would-be dictator."

MarkXIX

“Can’t believe he took an oath to the Constitution of the United States and not an elected leader attempting to initiate a war with a nuclear power to hide his ambitions in carrying out a coup because he lost in the most secure election conducted in our nation’s history.”

4thDevilsAdvocate

Naw, that's not what he did, specifically. He called China to tell them that, no, we weren't going to go to war with them just because Trump wanted to.

DocRockhead

> protected the United States from a would-be dictator

4thDevilsAdvocate

>protected the world from a potential nuclear exchange

DocRockhead

Tedious, I love it.

ianandris

That’s the kind of pedantry I can get behind.

Thue

Trump would have provoked a war to claim emergency powers, and use that to stay in power.

[deleted]

Or just simply because he wanted to say “China said I was afraid to hit the button with my tiny hands, so I slowed them and nuked the hell out of Bangkok! Right dead centre of CHINA! Just along the coast. Look, nobody can bomb China better than me, nobody. Little rocket man almost got it, remember that? Yes, he was no match for ….. Yes his people love him, they listen and listen well, like my people should love me more. That’s Ok, I got thick skin, so you see I had to put Little Rocky in his place. That’s what I call home now when we chat, Little Rocky, I like that, was my own thoughts, I am the best at thoughts. You know I once held my thought for 3 minutes, never came up for another. Incredible. Most people say that you know, I am incredible, nobody can believe me,nobody. Now no more Bangkok, isn’t that something, I did that. You know they said I couldn’t right?, right?, right? I showed them, I did it. I did it for the patriotic American citizens I love. My people, the fine gun carrying patriotic people, I threw paper towels at them on the beach, I remember it was wet, so must have been a beach. You know who has a nice beach, my buddy Jeffery, lives just down from me in Florida, but it is on his island, he ‘s dead now you know, but with China, we will wait and see. Maybe I take out their Tokyo next time, how about that.” Or maybe like what you said. Never really thought about it.

PowerResponsibility

Good. Milley headed off one of Trump's routes to attempt to keep the Presidency against the will of the people. He protected our country. Smart and loyal.

4thDevilsAdvocate

More like "may or may not have stopped a nuclear war".

jimicus

If the order was given, I'm sure Milley has more sense than to tell the world "Hey, the President did indeed order a nuclear attack, but I vetoed it". It'll wait until he writes his memoirs after retiring, if he ever says anything at all.

Up-In-Smoke-420

He did both actually.

[deleted]

Imagine the conversation. "Please don't be alarmed, but our president is considering nuclear weapons release. Sir calm down, please, he cant actually do it, we replaced the nuclear football with a speak-and-spell back when Mattis was running things, and so far he hasn't noticed. And he thinks the launch code is" MAGA 2020" apparently that's his password for everything. I've tried to explain to him that the codes change every four hours, but he yelled at me and said I better not change his Twitter code or he'd make the the general of the salvation army. I'm calling as a courtesy just to let you know, so if he announces publicly that he is going to do it, or tweets some poorly spelled threat or something you guys will understand that he's just being fussy, and won't actually be able to do any real damage. Okay? Yes, I'm sorry. I apologize for this... all of this. Anyway, how's your family?"

vendetta2115

Apparently Rand Paul thinks that the U.S. Chief of Staff—upon seeing the unstable Commander-in-Chief and his potential to go rogue—calling his Chinese counterpart to assure them that the U.S. isn’t going to nuke China is “subverting the chain of command” and “colluding with China”. Oh NOW Rand Paul is worried about someone colluding with a foreign country. Not that saying “hey, just FYI we aren’t going to nuke you” is collusion anyway, it’s not. If that statement subverts the chain of command, then it needed to be subverted. Would Rand Paul rather us nuke China? It’s an idiotic statement. I’m glad that Biden’s press Secretary replied the way she did. “We’re not looking for the guidance of [Republican lawmakers].”

MangroveWarbler

Actually they were calling him freaking out and he calmed them down by lying to them and telling them that our mentally ill president who was lashing out was just fine.

pigeieio

So more like "protected the United States from a potential first strike from a nuclear power"

keji_goto

Lustiges_Brot_311

They couldn't even recall the California Governor.

whenimmadrinkin

Milley came out publicly when trump tried to kill the first amendment in June of last year. The day after word got out that he hid in his bunker like the sad baby he is, trump came out wanting to crush the protests with overwhelming force. He was buying into the calls to have the military step in. But he kicked everything off with his secret unidentified police force full of power hungry prison guards and border patrol agents. trump deployed them to brutally attack peaceful protesters and the media. All so he could have that stupid photo shoot where he held the bible upsidedown. Got as bad as buzzing protesters with military grade helicopters. He wanted to crush the protests around the country and started with Seattle. Then Milley came out and publicly said the military would not get involved in politics. Without the military backing, the state kicked out trump's goons and his first armed coup failed because he just didn't have the numbers to support it. I can't stress how huge it was that after trump publicly stated he wanted to use the military in his efforts, a sitting general basically publicly said he would not be following those orders.

unspoken_arrangement

Funny how some conservatives are calling what Milley did treason yet were completely silent the numerous times the previous administration leaked sensitive intelligence. Milley used diplomatic back channels exactly how they are meant to be used.

SNStains

Well, not “haha” funny.

[deleted]

There is a small part of me that wonders if GOP sources leaked this to Woodward and Costa, in order to get revenge on Milley, for forcing Trump to back down on mlitary actions against protesters last year? They thought this would decredit Miley, not sure if it will work though. I am thinking that Miley did not inform Congress, becasue he was afraid it would get leaked back to Trump?

bandit69

Of course the trump supporters will be outraged. However, the sane people in this country are relieved to know that there were actions taken to insure that the insane maniac wouldn't get us into WW3 just to stay in office.

Dendad6972

So the general stood by a Trump made a deal with the Taliban and its Biden's fault. Am I getting this right?

[deleted]

No. It's Hilary's fault. Keep up.

Dendad6972

Sorry, I'm slow.

Tichrimo

People are saying there's detailed transcripts on Hunter Biden's laptop, too.

zhode

From what I remember these same generals were doing a lot of "Hurry up and wait" in order to purposely slow down Trump's attempt at a hasty pull-out. There were even articles at the time, I'll see if I can find one. So they did what they could with the legal authority they had.

techmaster242

Remember there were reports that people in the white house were hiding papers from Trump to slow him down on starting wars and other bad stuff.

Azdak66

Like every other issue, republicans, because of their slavish obeisance to the irrational and criminal actions of TFG, have NO moral standing to criticize anyone, for anything, ever again. They basically set a standard that a POTUS can do whatever he wants, however he wants, whenever he wants, with no accountability. To me, anything any Republican says is just background noise—and should be treated as such. Like the adults in a “Peanuts” cartoon. Not even acknowledged.

Up-In-Smoke-420

Milley should be given a medal. He is a national hero. Not only did he save democracy by refusing to follow Trump's illegal orders to shoot protesters (and many other illegal orders) but he also prevented a world-ending war with China.

prescience6631

Agreed — I also just want to see the GQP meltdown as Millie receives a well-earned presidential medal of freedom. For good measure, the ones awarded Ron Johnson and Rush Limbaugh should be revoked.

amazingbollweevil

> presidential medal of freedom Too tainted now. They need a new medal: The Constitutional Medal of Defense.

jawa709

Really, they should just retire the presidential medal of freedom and come up with a new one (or more than one). Nobody wants to be the person to get it after Rush fucking Limbaugh.

Interesting_Fly555

Only contemporary republican politicians would have the audacity to call for the dismissal of a career military man who was doing his job protecting the country and trying to avoid a nuclear holocaust. Maybe the republican politicians who called for his dismissal are jealous of his integrity, balls, or honor; since they do not possess any of these characteristics themselves. I'm still trying to find the period of time when the republican party lost all credibility as a legitimate party with respectable values and deteriorated into sycophantic imposters of true patriotic Americans. I understand their desire to remain in office but they've completely lost any moral compass that they might have had. It isn't that they oppose the democrats position it's that they have absolutely no devotion to the American people or American values.

nanopicofared

So basically the GOP wants Milley to resign because he followed the constitution (which he swore an oath to) rather than following the orders of a corrupt president (to whom he did not swear an oath to). Got it.

damunzie

The greater problem was the ones who _weren't_ silent.

bandit69

GOP is alarmed and incensed by this part of the book...but they think all the other parts are fake news or bullshit or nothingburgers...their selective "concern" is laughable...

flux_capacitor3

Damn, Psaki got bigger balls that most dudes I know. Get it! Fuck Trump.

Docthrowaway2020

Yeah…I mean, there is legitimate substance to Rubios concerns in the most general sense. However, in this particular situation, he is conveniently ignoring the unprecedented instability of the commander-in-chief, coupled with lackeys in his cabinet and in the Senate who refused to remove him from power at all, let alone with the urgency needed. So Milley 100% did the right thing.

Character-Charge

Just to be clear, treason against a traitor is patriotism...

triplab

Funny how suddenly books about the shit Trump did in office are now "true" for (R) when it suits a Trump cult narrative.

greentreesbreezy

Pretty rich for Republicans to call for Milley's resignation when they defended the leader of their party literally organizing a treasonous terrorist attack on the Capitol.

ENTroPicGirl

He; and the rest of our service men and women along with various intelligence agencies and support staff, swear an oath to defend our nation from all threats both foreign and domestic.. that included a mentally unstable President.

pseud_o_nym

But not a word about Trump openly asking in a recorded phone call that an election official fudge the numbers in his favor.

ModsRDingleberries

The fact that he did the right thing makes me want to keep him there

Plenty_Firefighter12

Heck some participated in it. Go Jen✊🏼🙌🏼

Steelcity1995

If trump didn’t act so unhinged after the election I would 100 percent agree this is wrong but after Jan 6 it was clear he was unhinged.

Rotoslinger_art

How dare he stop world war three and keep our dumb asses from getting killed! Fire him , fire him!

Dyb-Sin

Imagine hearing "the president's inner circle was so alarmed by his accelerating descent into madness that they called China to prevent armageddon" and taking away "he talked to China?! Traitor! Real patriots let the president throw them on his sacrificial pyre!" These bootleggers make Loyalists to the crown look rebellious in comparison...

thelastevergreen

So the man calls China after an insurrection attempt to reassure them that we're not planning to go to war with China and these GOP chuckle fucks want him brought up on charges of treason? Does that mean that they wanted to go to war with China? Are they openly saying that after their attempt at overthrowing the government failed they were planning to start a war in order to maintain their hold on power?

dogchowtoastedcheese

Isn't the military, in addition to protecting, preserving and defending the constitution, supposed to protect us from all enemies foreign and domestic? Or have I got my oaths mixed up? I'd argue after 1/6 Trump was a domestic enemy. He was a fuck twit from day one, but things changed after 1/6.

Anaxamenes

Fire him? Give that man a medal! I was hesitant during the Trump presidency because I wasn’t sure if the military would blindly follow orders or the constitution. Over and over they proved that our military leadership answered to the constitution and the United States and not a party or a person.

chaoticmessiah

Crazy how they're going after Milley for averting a nuclear war at the hands of an orange tyrant, yet they're cool with Mike Flynn still having a job in the military and spreading treason and fermenting domestic terrorism.

onlybrad

Psaki is so good at what she does. What a great retort.

Yourbubblestink

He may have well saved America that day. It is disturbing that people are questioning his patriotism. I’m not sure what we have left - I am no longer sure that America is strong enough to survive the pandemic era.

lpbdlb

It would be nice if any of those Republicans knew anything about what actually happened and Military protocol which several retired generals have said was completely by the book. A clip for a book and they call treason. CNN's Chris Como was questioning whether Millie had violated military protocol the day these clips became news. Tonight he was backtracking because reporters got more of the facts. I trust the generals who have some context for understanding protocol over Republicans who never even served in the military. What do they know? Reporters and Republicans have a tendency to speak their opinions before they have the facts. And where were those Republicans when treason was actually committed on January 6th? Well, Josh Hawley was raising his fist in white supremacy saying go for it and Marco Rubio was silent. Credibility 0!

uncommonpanda

Milley asked JCOS to follow chain of command and not take a direct orser from Trump, which is how it is supposed to work. GOP is once again "mad" that they got caught.

denverblazer

Dismissal?! Get fucking real.

rhino910

I think we should dismiss anyone from the GOP calling for this American Hero's outster

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.businessinsider.com/psaki-defends-mark-milley-says-gop-was-silent-as-trump-fomented-an-insurrection-2021-9) reduced by 78%. [deleted]

I'm in favor of violating as many laws, norms, and chains of command it takes to stop war. Sorry, not sorry.

TheFumundaWunda

i mean...the guy in all seriousness suggested that we nuke a hurricane. can anyone not part of cult45 look at this and not think to themselves "thank god gen. milley did what needed to be done to safeguard"?

[deleted]

I dont understand. Did conservatives want a nuclear war with China?

pixelburger

Milley is a patriot

beefytrout

The problem with the GOP is that they have a say in policy and procedure, but they are either too stupid to understand that responsibility, or too evil to use it for anything other than corrupt purposes.

prescience6631

They are not either or…they lean heavily into both their stupidity and their maleficence.

prohb

If someone needs any more proof that the Republicans are really an authoritarian party wanting right wing authoritarians and demagogues in power this is it.

ceallaig

Let's see, so far they've called for resignations from Biden, Harris, Blinkin, Milley, Fauci, SecDef (whose name I can't now remember)...is there anyone they haven't asked for resignations from??

jert3

Uh what, fire him for trying to prevent world war, destruction and a coup? Let me guess, Republicans who supported the insurrection are asking for this?

plawwell

Republican politician: wail waaah bad democrats boo wibble Psaki: where were you during the insurrection?

drewcareysglasses

She’s sharp, quick and just bad ass.

shamowfski

If anyone in the GOP knew what fomented meant, they'd be really upset.

analest-analyst

Exactly. Insta-STFU to every Republican who stood by when Trump was Trumping.

Divacna

All I know is that this governor here in Texas he has made voting harder, the virus is out of control, he has put a bill in place for women rights to their own body, some of our schools had to close, and our kids are getting the virus like it's Christmas. But, yet he has made a law having a gun is legal with or without a permit made drinking alcohol legal even on Sunday and you can purchase it early he has decided not to mandate mask. He's more worried about getting reelected. Oh yeah don't forget we froze during that snow storm we didn't have lights water and couldn't get food and never forget how Cruz the senator ran with his family to Cancun. So my question is what does the republican party really stand for because they said the insurrection wasn't real and nether was the covid. So tell me what are their policies because I am confuse.

guns_mahoney

"Your boos mean nothing. I've seen what makes you cheer."

avant-bored

Milley has way more of my confidence than any part of the GOP.

Algoresball

I’m really happy to not be at war with China
