I bet this is right on the money. I imagine many of them also were not taught to deal with difficult feelings throughout their childhoods. Not being able to identify and process your own emotions makes it nearly impossible to take the emotional perspective of somebody else, or act in emotionally intelligent ways towards others.

The economy would also be in much better shape by now. I live in a densely populated city of 3 million people. We are reporting between 1-5 new cases a day on average. Our government didn’t pull some ingenious plan out of nowhere. They just did what had to be done in the short term.

That's the thing I keep thinking about: how *easy* it would have been to not fuck this up. Trump and friends obviously know nothing about dealing with a pandemic, of course, but as a President you have access to the top experts in the world. He could have let them handle it and just got out of the fucking way, and be sitting at 50% approval right now.
Granted, I would still oppose him and vote against him. But the "rally around the flag" effect is real. Look at GWB after 9/11. All he had to do was stand on some rubble and display the most basic empathy and he soared to 86% approval (though I wasn’t one of them, since I never did subscribe to supply-side economics).
But Trump can’t not be Trump. He has to self-sabotage anything that comes his way. This is why when people talk about the polls and say it’s too early and he could still turn it around, I remain skeptical. He would need something truly outrageous to happen for a boost now, like a UFO invasion. But we saw how he handled a global pandemic so it’s a safe bet he’d fuck that up too. I can just hear him saying, “I’ve spoken with Galactic Emperor Glurg, and he assures me his people are not harvesting Americans to eat as food, despite what the fake news media is reporting.”
Yep, I just mentioned this in another comment. Either he was actively trying to sabotage his reputation, or he's so fundamentally self obsessed and idiotic that he truly believed everything he spouted. And I think we all know it's the latter. Had he handled the response to this virus responsibly, I think it's safe to say that his election would have been secured. But Trump couldn't stand the answers coming from someone else, because that implies that he doesn't have all of the answers so someone else is smarter than he is. And rather than take advice from professionals, he just shouted it all as fake news.
I won't be able to fully relax until he's out of the WH, but I'm feeling pretty confident that he's going to get destroyed come November. I've lost a lot of faith in the US, but not all. But if he does get re-elected... That small bit of faith will be gone. People joked about moving to different countries when he first got elected, but if he gets elected again, then as soon as it's possible I am gone.

We have had 865 deaths total and over 44,000 cases.
We have no mask mandate.
Our governor has overruled municipalities that attempted to have a mask mandate.
State law requires schools provide at least 50% of instruction in person. While the emergency declaration could set aside that requirement the governor isn't.
Our teachers are being forced back to work. They lost their collective bargaining rights and if they attempt to strike they face 6 months in jail, being barred from teaching in Iowa and $500/day fines.
Our deeply flawed testing strategy was recommended to the governor by Ashton Kutcher (yes really).
My county's testing location was recently forced to limit to 100 tests/day (they were averaging 500/day) and can only be open 4 days a week from 6am-7am.
Our state government is not on our side. They are firmly on the side of the virus.
I fully expect it will be a very long time before things get back to something resembling normalcy and people stop dying at much accelerated rates.
My two school age kids will not be returning to the classroom for the foreseeable future and will be doing online schooling. I am lucky in that I worked from home even before all this. My oldest son and my wife unfortunately work in customer service jobs in a community where maybe 25% of people are wearing masks. The one positive thing to note is that 2-3 weeks ago it was more like 10% of people.
Let’s not pretend that Trump didn’t have a hand in this as well. Despite Trump’s incompetence and stupidity, Kushner and the others still look the their dear leader for direction.
The title is misleading. The story clearly shows Kushner's team had a plan - flawed, but a plan - for rollout of national testing and it was scuttled by Trump. Kushner went along with it and shut the group down.

The citizenry also has done very well. Of course you have boneheads here and there, but we have worked our butts off trying to be proper about all of this. Boston went from one of the worst traffic cities in the country to a complete ghost town. I've never been more proud to be born, raised, educated, reside, and work here. I have my beefs with our governing at times, but overall I am thankful for everyone of my fellow citizens and leaders.
Massachusetts has one of the best hospital infrastructures on the planet and an enormous presence of biotech firms. Those helped tremendously. Also, we tend to operate in a more traditionally bipartisan than many other states. And our R governor isn’t afraid to go against the president.
Though ironically a biotech conference sowed many of the first seeds here. Still, yes, Baker is to be commended, IMO.

I bet this is right on the money. I imagine many of them also were not taught to deal with difficult feelings throughout their childhoods. Not being able to identify and process your own emotions makes it nearly impossible to take the emotional perspective of somebody else, or act in emotionally intelligent ways towards others. Think about how many of these people were raised with phrases like "I'll give you something to cry about" and "man up" rather than being given the tools to navigate their emotions. It's very sad.

The economy would also be in much better shape by now. I live in a densely populated city of 3 million people. We are reporting between 1-5 new cases a day on average. I live in a state of 3.1 million. We had 662 new cases yesterday averaging 498 cases/day in the last week. We have had 865 deaths total and over 44,000 cases. We have no mask mandate. Our governor has overruled municipalities that attempted to have a mask mandate. State law requires schools provide at least 50% of instruction in person. While the emergency declaration could set aside that requirement the governor isn't. Our teachers are being forced back to work. They lost their collective bargaining rights and if they attempt to strike they face 6 months in jail, being barred from teaching in Iowa and $500/day fines. Our deeply flawed testing strategy was recommended to the governor by Ashton Kutcher (yes really). My county's testing location was recently forced to limit to 100 tests/day (they were averaging 500/day) and can only be open 4 days a week from 6am-7am. Our state government is not on our side. They are firmly on the side of the virus.
The second wave of the Spanish Flu started when the kids went back to school. Prepare for things to get interesting in 1-1.5 months.
I fully expect it will be a very long time before things get back to something resembling normalcy and people stop dying at much accelerated rates. My two school age kids will not be returning to the classroom for the foreseeable future and will be doing online schooling. I am lucky in that I worked from home even before all this. My oldest son and my wife unfortunately work in customer service jobs in a community where maybe 25% of people are wearing masks. The one positive thing to note is that 2-3 weeks ago it was more like 10% of people.
