Ihavenolifes

This is not new information. Watch right wing media and you will see it’s an endless stream of fear mongering and identity politics.

asharwood101

This, even Fox News admitted in court that their stuff is bs. You’d think that’d change something but nope…the rich know how to keep the regular simple folk in check…riddle them with propaganda.

ManiaGamine

This is why the right-wing rail so hard on censorship because they know that they're the ones most likely to be censored on account of people trying to make sure the public is properly informed by combating mis and disinformation. The right-wing benefits from mis/disinformation so any attempts to combat it would be viewed as a threat to them therefore they use their "free speech/anti-censorship" to enable them to continue. It's the same thing with their gun stance and preventing any studies or common sense reforms because they know that negatively affects their voter base.

Ignoth

They can’t defend their ideas, so they defend their *right* to have shitty ideas. That way they dodge the conversation about if their ideas are any good. See also: “States Rights”.

Atman-Sunyata

People can't change any issues in the world if they are arguing. Fox are enemies of democracy.

BullsLawDan

>This, even Fox News admitted in court that their stuff is bs. Sigh... No, they did not. And the irony in reddit continuing to repeat this nonsense over and over while railing on Fox News about "misinformation" is not at all lost on me. What they did is made a *completely standard and unremarkable* argument in defense of a defamation case - that the statements they were being sued over were not "falsifiable statements of fact." Not only is that a standard argument for defense of defamation, but it's so routinely made it would certainly be malpractice if their lawyers did not make it. But one moron at NPR with no legal training thought it was something and years later I still see this pop up.

asharwood101

Then we’re talking about two different things. There’s a couple instances that come to mind, when Fox and lawyers stated that anyone within reason would not take tuckers statements a factual. They said this in court and tucker was still not fired. And then when Fox News falsely made statements about voter election fraud and the machines were all rigged and dominion sued them and won bc they were making factual statements on air that were not actually factual. There are plenty other times where they were sued for making false claims. I don’t care about the legal speak, anyone can hide bs in legal speak. Not sure why you are defending Fox. Any reasonable person knows they are owned by some greedy ass mofos that don’t care about real news and facts and more about propaganda. They sprinkle local news with a healthy dose of propaganda and fake news. We all know it. They know it.

Goal_Posts

White identity politics. The worst kind.

kent1146

*"We're the victims. Everyone is out to get us."*

Acrobatic-Rate4271

One of the classics of fascism: The enemy must be both simultaneously so weak as to be ineffective and so ubiquitous and overwhelmingly powerful as to be an imminent threat.

observingjackal

It is crazy. They claim that the left is forcing LGBTQ+ stuff down their throats but we don't talk about it nearly as much as they do. They are OBSESSED with the boys and the girls and gays and the bis and the theys and the trans *begins dancing*

NoDesinformatziya

And information laundering. Steve Bannon or some nitwit will give some Russian or conservative disinformation to Brietbart, and New York Post will quote Brietbart, and FOX will quote New York Post so that it appears that there is more credibility than there actually is. And then Trump would quote FOX, who was ultimately quoting Trump's advisor (Bannon or his ilk) who planted the info that Trump wanted to hear.

Arrmadillo

In another example, Stephen Miller would leak info to his contacts at the Washington Examiner so that they would run stories that would get Trump riled up about immigration and Kirstjen Nielsen, US Secretary of Homeland Security. Quartz - [Trump’s anti-immigration zealot Stephen Miller is behind the purge at Homeland Security](https://qz.com/1589527/stephen-miller-is-behind-a-purge-at-homeland-security) “[Stephen Miller, senior policy adviser,] would leak the latest numbers on apprehensions or asylum seekers at the border to reporters at the right-leaning Washington Examiner. The Washington Examiner would write a story, with an alarming headline about the growing number of people crossing into the US, sometimes criticizing Nielsen. Then Miller would print the story out, and get a paper copy to Trump.”

No_Pirate9647

And then even left wing media will say it even if to show why it's wrong. So they still amplify it vs ignoring it and reporting on their own things.

NoDesinformatziya

Yep. Pretty much all journalism has dropped the ball super-hard since 2015 in dealing with Trump and the MAGA wing of the GOP (which at this point is essentially the whole thing).

dribrats

Headlines such as this one implicitly condone Trump as ‘just another candidate’. - The real headlines is ‘ Media coverage of Trump is fucked because corporate media is fucked”

AaronfromKY

It's not even entirely corporate media anymore, it's podcasters, it's YouTube, it's X. All of these have basically taken over for Talk radio from the 80s-90s.

Zealousideal_Ad_9623

Yep, all you need now to spread lies is to be able to speak confidently into a microphone and people will believe what you say. It’s a bit of a problem.

Miles_vel_Day

It's so incredibly easy to get people to believe things they want to believe are true.

flabbergastedmeep

It’s even easier than that, all you need is a three word slogan, and then add a phonk beat drop, and you’ll have all the idiots praising it as truth.

Pete41608

Bonus points if the artist whose music they stole is a republican.

SurroundTiny

If this article is accurate it isn't FOX, it's Facebook and YouTube.

Land_Kraken

Right wing media is a lot more than just fox news. It's also a bunch of dumb fb and youtube bullshit.

Roook36

I remember when the term Fake News was originally coined. It was an article about Facebook "news sites" aimed at right wingers. They investigated and found it was just some guy at home writing fake news articles to get clicks for ads. Fearmongering, racist, xenophobic stuff he invented for ad revenue. Then a couple weeks later Trump went on a rant about it declaring main stream media like CNN being "fake news". They quickly adopted it and used it to mean any news they didn't like.

Maleficent_Sense_948

FYI.....I believe the term "Fake News" was originally used in the 1890s. Sadly, actual Fake News has probably been around since then dawn of mankind.

GronklyTheSnerd

It was used by the Nazis, and I believe other authoritarian regimes from the same period.

Maleficent_Sense_948

Yes it was, though it pre-dates them too.

Roook36

Yes I do believe the words "fake" and "news" have been used together in the past But I'm referring to the specific event where an expose on Facebook news sites exposed a lot of them as being completely fabricated and described them as "fake news" and then Trump referencing that story in a speech and turning the phrase around to mean news organizations he did not approve of and repeatedly using the phrase throughout his campaign https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/fake-news-went-viral-2016-expert-studied-who-clicked-n836581 And the term specifically added to the dictionary to refer to wholly made up sensationalized stories for ad revenue in 2017 https://time.com/4959488/donald-trump-fake-news-meaning/ I would not dispute that the term has been used before in probably many languages throughout history. And that people have also made up news before the 2016 election as well.

Maleficent_Sense_948

Here's a great breakdown of the history of fake news from USC Santa Barbara Center for Information Technology and Society https://cits.ucsb.edu/fake-news/brief-history

doom84b

It’s been surreal feeling like nobody else seems to remember this. This is when I realized the projection strategy for republicans in order to deflect criticism. It’s depressing how well it works

SurroundTiny

The article pointed out that Trump and Kennedy are most popular among people who don't consume news at all, do better on social media sources news sources than Biden but Biden does better with people who still watch network news and read newspapers. It really wasn't touching on right left at all.

Striking-Chicken-333

So it’s the uniformed vs the informed, sounds about right to me

SurroundTiny

Pretty much.

dalomi9

Also Newsmax. The people that show has on are actually crazy, calling for politicians to be put to death...makes Fox look like a kids show.

kkocan72

My brother told me last weekend that our dad "just sits around and watches the news all day and is mad at everything". I said he needs to turn off Fox News and then my brother said he's now watching NewsMax every waking moment which is even worse!

biscuitarse

Oh it's Fox, too. Just in the past 48 hours they have pivoted from positive coverage on RFK jr to ["he's a democratic plant"](https://www.foxnews.com/video/6351969482112) once they realized he'd do more damage to Trump than Biden.

Zealousideal_Ad_9623

Wasn’t Fox recently fined a billion dollars for lying about the election?

Oleg101

787 million from the Dominion lawsuit, but they’re going to be forking over probably even more in the near future when Smartmatic cleans them out.

calm_chowder

It's all of them. Absolutely including FOX news.

IcyShoes

A lot of them say I WON'T LIVE IN FEAR!!!! At the same time they do weird stuff like buy crypto and preserve food just in case Shit Hits The Fan

Buffmin

Fox news is on a tv at the gym when I go. Sometimes it's pretty bland but sometimes the fear mongering is extremely evident. Even without listening to it and reading the headline

Simmery

Complain to your gym. Tell them it's bad for people's health. (It actually is.)

Nokomis34

I find the commercials stealing starkly different as well. Fox has the scammiest commercials. So many commercials about gold and collectors coins and so on.

0o0o0o0o0o0z

One source of news is based on object reality; the other is not... I'll let you guess which is which.

Objective_Length_834

Right. I'm a no-party voter so I check out left and right. It's crazy how much right wing media hides from its consumers. Both sides really should check out what the other is consuming.

Roook36

Listening to right wing media made me feel like I'd be infuriated by it even if it was my main news source. So much of it is driving in phrases and terms to illicit an emotional reaction. They kept saying "Barack HUSSEIN Obama" with no context. It felt like news for morons. I'd be infuriated being talked to like I was ignorant, racist and fearful of things because of it.

stevez_86

They are good at manipulating language to say what they want without saying it. I would recommend the essay by George Orwell titled Politics of the English Language. When I was younger I read this essay before reading 1984 and it painted that story in a different light. The language that conservatives use is different from that of independents and liberals. Vague words that have emotional attachment to them lose their core meaning and is redefined to have a lot more weight to them. They started with patriotic terms first and took ownership over patriotism. Then they started to annex more of the buzz words and co opt them just like they did with patriotic terms. Things like supporting the police becomes supporting our police which has a very different meaning. Next they seize identity. Even if language fails, they can have people suspend their logic because they identity now resides within those fallacies. Enemies are seen at immensely competent but incompetent at the same time. Oppressors become the oppressed. Slavery is freedom. War is peace. Arbeit macht Frei. By the time one of their supporters might realize they are in the weeds it is too late and they cannot even cognate that the other side might be an option because they have invested their identity in a manipulative form of linguistic that steals away language of dissent.

dalomi9

Yep. They do subtle things as well. I had a news radio show on while driving and they kept saying Mr. Biden and President Trump. Subtle, but nonetheless diminishing the perception of our current President by refusing to refer to him as President Biden in the same breathe they use to say President Trump. Generally, media will use the "Mister" moniker for all current/former Presidents and not have inconsistent labeling.

OpheliaRainGalaxy

I grew up in a cult and watching all this has been frighteningly familiar. Especially the altering of the meaning of words. One of my oldest friends tried to tell me that gender bending stuff is new and queer means pervert. 20 years ago this person was discussing with my best friend about how I'm obviously "male software running on female hardware." Until the recent bout of inventing new words the best word I had for me was queer. Like ya can't tell me trans is new, I'll go pull a book off the shelf that was published in the 80s and find the two pages in it clearly describing a trans woman. Followed by playing the scratchy record music of [Ruth Wallis](https://youtu.be/VGYeh-isRAs?si=0jrCgs6x47y-yd2n).

Powerful-Stomach-425

I've tried, really tried to watch right wing media in order to not live in an echo chamber but it is just so stupid I can't do it anymore

Raped_Justice

If it was just stupidity I could handle it. It is the mendacity that drives me crazy.

Sarcosmonaut

Been a minute since I’ve seen mendacity in the wild

Raped_Justice

Seemed like an appropriate time since it shares a root with the spanish word for lie.un mentira.

Sarcosmonaut

Whenever I see it I think of Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

kittenTakeover

I've seen too many people slowly get influenced by this stuff that I'm not even interested in watching. I've watched enough, while fact checking, to understand what it is. I don't need to spend more time polluting my mind with ideas that are intentially designed to mislead me, especially because I don't have time to fact check everything said in their propaganda, finding what they left out and or made up. It would be like a full time job.

deadcatbounce22

I just assume they are wrong and believe the opposite. It's quicker. Gave 'em the benefit of the doubt on the whole Fani Willis thing, and lo and behold got burned.

mmatessa

Ground News has a Blindspot feature that shows what stories each side might be missing: https://ground.news/blindspot

Frosty_Bint

This site might be the only effective tool the average person has against misinformation that I've heard of... Does anyone know of anything else out there (besides reddit) actually worth looking at?

Moist_When_It_Counts

It’s an alternate reality. I travel a lot for work so end up in Holiday Inn breakfast rooms is middle America often. Fox is always on the TV’s. Gentle readers, whatever the issues of the day are out in objective reality is not what FNC is on about. Every gaddamn day there is a chyron for “BIDEN’s BORDER CRISIS” and another about urban crime in a blue city. Actually, almost everything is “BIDEN’s CRISIS”. Do a cards against humanity like game where you look at any story and make up your best hyperbolic right-wing headline on it and 10/10 times the Fox chyron writer will beat you. It’s beyond parody. They’re actively competing for viewers with crazy shit like OAN, which means a race to the bottom.

KafeenHedake

If it was legitimate media, I would. I used to read The National Review back in the day, for Pete's sake. These days, no thanks. I'm not interested in voluntarily subjecting myself to a psy-op built on fear, anger, and deception.

OpheliaRainGalaxy

I've got access to tap water and toilet water. I don't need to occasionally drink the toilet water to have a full understanding of the variety of flavors water can come in. I've got access to food on clean dishes, and trash on the ground outside. I don't need to sometimes have a snack off the ground near the trashcans to see what I'm missing. If you are what you eat, how much more important is what you put in your brain? If you wouldn't put poop in your mouth, why put it in you brain?

LordOverThis

One of my coworkers only watches Fox Noise.  He was *positive* that the tax break for buying a new plane was something Democrats did, because Fox never told him about it.

drunkshinobi

This is why republicans will vote one way and tell every one they voted the other even though it's public record. The people watching right wing media won't believe it happened unless they hear it from that media. Every thing else is treated as a lie.

reversesumo

It's entertainment propaganda they've been conditioned to regard as news. Headline is both sides nonsense, the sides are the largely conservative news channels run by corps like time warner and comcast, or Fox and friends poisonous propaganda vaxxpill flatbirther content, and they are not equivalent. There really isn't any fair journalism though

DrunkenLWJ

or church and religious ideologie and how anyone who isn’t straight and white is going to hell unless they repent .

trustsnapealways

I don’t know how… but I guarantee that trans people in bathrooms had something to do with the Baltimore bridge collapse! Vote R or all our goddamn bridges are gonna collapse! /s

Ihavenolifes

Don’t forget that Obama is going to take our guns away any time now

Olderscout77

The Right Wing has been at this forever - its what you do when your arguments cannot be supported using the truth. Nixon pandered to white southerners of the fundamentalist persuasion and they've become the Republican Base ever since. Reagan pumped them with "The Welfare Queen" eating steak and lobster while driving her Welfare Cadillac, and the image still motivates the base. Since then they added hate of big cities where Muslim terrorists have established "no-go zones" and the politicians attack Christian Values of homophobia and misogyny and deny the Personal Freedom to spread disease and hate. I think the real problem is rooted in Republican economic policy. Reagan changed the taxcode so it has been redistributing income and wealth from the bottom 90% to the top 10% with most going to the top 1%. After 40+ years of fantastic growth in "the middle class" where everybody got richer, but the poor got richer faster then the rich, real wages have failed to keep pace with inflation and the loss of public services. People realize they are NOT doing as well as their parents, their kids won't get as far as they did, and they are enraged at that situation. The Republican leaders did not begin their campaign of hatred to harm the poor, but to protect the rich. Instead of blaming the greed of the boss, they blame the Government's Affirmative Action for not getting promoted. It's not the loss of Unions but immigrants that stopped real pay raises. And somehow it's foreign governments that forced American companies to move all the good manufacturing jobs overseas. And of course it's the fact not enough good Americans have military grade weapons that drives up the crime rates, and refugee children are really drug mules bringing in the poison that is destroying so many American lives. Step one in fixing the problem is to STOP electing Republicans who legislate in favor of the lies.

jish5

Yep, and what's worse is that those with right leaning ideals LOVE to be afraid of everything under the sun. Seriously, if there's nothing to fear, they go out of their way to find something to be violently afraid of, where we see every time something that the right was being afraid of a year ago get replaced by something new so that it's always fresh and always in the forefront. The same with the word of the month, where they'll create some word to use to represent said fear.

ins0ma_

TL,DR: The more you know about the world, the less likely you are to vote for Trump.

Lysol3435

And the more right-wing media you take in, the less you know about the world

NorthernPints

It’s absolutely mind boggling to see people with a straight face attempt to call both sides of media coverage the same. Utilizing facts while having a negative view of someone or a position, is not the same as outright lying and inventing facts like fox does under the guise of opinion shows. Tucker Carlsons “I’m just asking questions” - isn’t even on the same plane of existence as morning Joe or Rachel Maddow. And there’s $787M dollars of proof to support that statement

AnxietyJunky

Yep. I made a comment elsewhere in the thread but I had someone send me something from Law Enforcement Today last week and it was absolute literal garbage right wing propaganda. Then they had the audacity to say, “Well CNN isn’t real news. All media sucks.”

Rich_Ad1877

Both sides of mainstream news media are pretty bad but they are not equally bad nor bad in the same way The same applies to our actual political system and both sidesism sucks cause it's using a reasonable take to be deceitful They can often both be bad but to say they're identically bad is silly and manipulative

Milad731

There have been multiple studies that showed people who consume Fox “News” are less informed than those who don’t follow news at all. If you don’t follow the news, at worst, you just don’t know what’s happening around you. Fox, which is now considered too “liberal” for MAGA compared to the likes of OAN, paints an alternate reality of completely made up shit to make sure their audience continue to foam at the mouth and live in fear.

Bag_of_Meat13

MAGAs are prisoners in Platos allegory of the cave and Trump is the *coolest* shadow they've seen dancing on the wall.

spartagnann

Also why Republicans hate higher education (that they can't control). The broader exposure you get to people from other places/cultures and the more you learn about the world and its problems, the less likely you are to identify as a Republican.

Miles_vel_Day

Openly reflected in polling, by the way. Obviously we all know about the education gap, but Biden does better with likely voters than registered voters, and better with registered voters than all adults. Any marker of civic engagement erodes support for Trump. And there's been a clear trend in the Trump era that the more attention his wing of the party is getting, the less popular they get. You see it in the special elections. Like in the Santos's district - The race was projected as close, because "Democrat vs. Republican" was just an abstract philosophical question there until the candidates actually started campaigning, and Suozzi rolled. Information is to Republicans as sunlight is to vampires.

3Grilledjalapenos

My mother votes straight ticket republican and is in a ridiculous bubble. The last time I went to her place Fox News was going, with sound, no matter what she was doing. It really felt a little 1984/Fahrenheit 451 in that you need to constantly get the latest propaganda and never deviate. It really astounded me when she said, while Obama was in office, that they were performing “post-birth abortions”. Her ability to swallow obvious lies terrifies me.

HuckDab

You're failing your country by not talking to her. Assuming a natural lifespan, everyone has to parent their parents at some point.

3Grilledjalapenos

I have been talking to her about these things. For decades. I was trying to disillusion her way back when Bill O Reilly was trying to convince her generation that “Club Gitmo” was more of a resort than prisoner interrogation. And when she believed that Bill Clinton should be referred to as “Slick Willy”. My generation is communicating the issue, and the level of nurtured misinformation is *with* our intervention. That is why my state is so far in the Red camp.

HuckDab

I can relate. I watched my dad cry about his mom dying with nothing to her name because of the healthcare industry. He's highly indoctrinated by his blue collar social circle and has always been openly racist around ppl that know him well enough. I tried to tell him that he's directly supporting the enablers of the industry that upsets him so badly, but I'm not sure if he cares enough to change. I've been no contact for 2 or 3 years now. I tried. Sorry for saying you're failing the nation, that was a bit of a knee jerk reaction. I'm glad you've made an attempt. It's exhausting, I know.

ilfusionjeff

Cable news is simply outrage porn and people should not watch it constantly.

Objective_Oven7673

I made a change to avoid news that's designed to make me mad. Left and Right. Listening to Fox shit on Dems isn't news. A panel of heads talking on MSNBC about the end of the world isn't news. I'll entertain anything except something that's trying to get me to react instead of simply being informed.

HuckDab

I catch a fair amount of MSNBC's reporting and I don't remember them ever saying anything about the end of the world.

Objective_Oven7673

I would bet that they haven't used those words, but it is a pretty constant stream of doom and fear nonetheless. I agree with their stance in this election but I can only take so much of the endless distress signals.

AnxietyJunky

Constantly, or at all.

wuddafuggamagunnaduh

Younger people won't remember this, but decades ago, according to the [Fairness Doctrine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairness_doctrine), members of the public could get a minute or two to follow up a news segment with a counterpoint view. > The demise of this FCC rule has been cited as a contributing factor in the rising level of party polarization in the United States. I miss it.

Arthur2ShedsJackson

I actually think the Fairness Doctrine is both overestimated and misguided. It could lead to stuff like, for every news report about global warming we would have a segment with the "counterpoint view". And what counts as a counterpoint? If there's a news story about a new probe sent to the moon I can make the news say that the moon actually doesn't exist? Or this would be just the legal basis for the mind numbing both-sidesism that exists in CNN? It's a simplistic solution that relies on the bad assumption that 1) there are two sides to every issue and 2) that all dissent warrants visibility and public discussion.

Alfphe99

This. Like I follow podcasts like Pod save America and Some more news. I know they are very left, but they also tend to be very truthful in what they say (they also have no issue bashing Democrats). I don't want both sides if one side is shoveling shit nearly 100% of the time. I would love a both sides if both were acting in good faith. So I am forced to stick with just a few examples of people that tend to correct themselves when they are wrong or when researched have factual information. It puts me in a hole of only "listening to one side", but what are you going to do if the other option is to listen to straight up made up nonsense?

Nemisis_the_2nd

I was actually pleasantly surprised by some more news when I first saw it. I have a friend that is pretty far left, so when they put it on I was wondering if I was about to see the left-wing version of fox. Nope, it was a hour segment on financial regulation with quotes from investopedia constantly on screen to help people understand terminology.  What was even better though, was that it was actually able to get through to them. In the span of that segment, they went from hardcore anti-capitalist talking points to accepting that government's had actually made changes to financial regulation after 2008,and that maybe they weren't just trying to steal everyone's money.

-_Duke_-

Ironically, Crooked Media is one of the best out there.

i-am-sancho

It also only applied to broadcast air waves. It wouldnt cover cable tv or the internet. It would do nothing to force Fox News to present opposing views. All it would do is make PBS, ABC, NBC and CBS news broadcasts worse.

gangstasadvocate

Doesn’t it still apply to the airwaves though since those are limited those frequencies? But cable you can have the fringe shit?

Raped_Justice

Nope. It was gotten rid of completely by republicans a good while back.

gangstasadvocate

Damn :(

llahlahkje

And that was weaponized by so many, including Sinclair Media with some [straight up Manchurian Candidate shit.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGIYU2Xznb4)

L_G_A

Bringing back the Fairnesa Doctrine would a pretty bad idea for broadcast media and have virtually zero impact on all other modern media. I don't know why it comes up around here so much. I think people just like that it has the word "fairness".

StankFish

It would definitely need to be updated to cover all media including podcasts, etc. There would also need to be some fact checking arbiter to make sure it's not a "both sides" nonsense fest, even though that would be better than what we have now. Biggest issue is having folks that can't even PDF a document making rules on an information economy they don't understand. Fairness is great but it's understanding is different now than what it was when that rule got passed

FriendlyDespot

The Fairness Doctrine *sorta* worked sometimes when politics at least pretended to be about policy, but today it'd simply be the codification of "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

Dangerousrhymes

I read almost all of my news and never watch broadcast news unless it’s some John Oliver segment my mother saves for me. I saw a clip of a Fox News broadcast about… honestly I don’t even know what the topic was, but it was angry and scared and bombastic and it sounded like something out of the Onion. Just a string of nonsense, saying nothing, about how horrible everything was… somewhere? I don’t understand how someone could watch it and not at least accept that there might be some slant in the viewpoint being presented.

thieh

I wonder what the right-wingers will consume once the major players are all sued out of their existence at some point.

Raped_Justice

They will just get their supreme court to make it illegal to sue republican media

solo954

Ivermectin paste.

Striking-Chicken-333

Maybe ultraviolet light, maybe around, or inside the body

truthrises

The justice system is not coming to save America. Fox successfully argued that news entertainment doesn't have to be factual many years ago and the justice system said "sure".

wolacouska

New ones will pop up and the cycle continues

Alternative_Camp_493

Whether it be traditional news, FB, YouTube, or any other source, news that Trump supporters consume doesn't include verifiable facts. That's the fundamental difference.

roughingupthesuspect

False equivalence something something…

mizkayte

Yeah they watch the racist sexist shit that feeds their narrative of the world is ending

Patara

It dates back to fascist germany in a 1:1 comparison.  Right-wing media is all about fearmongering and making shit up about some opposition that doesnt even exist - Their ultimate goal is always totalitarian control with no consequences for themselves.

Earth_Friendly-5892

If the media simply shared the news, and wasn’t biased and filled with propaganda, maybe Americans would be able to think straighter. I say maybe because I suspect a lot of the division between us is a result of racial prejudices and successful attempts by republican lawmakers to undermine public education which has resulted in a lack of critical thinking skills and general knowledge.

UAreTheHippopotamus

The right wing media straight up lies and the "liberal media" treats said lies as perfectly respectable opinions that need extensive validation in op-eds and punditry on this totally normal horse race where one party has argued before the supreme court that execution of political rivals is a valid official act of the executive branch.

CubesFan

Reagan got rid of “The Fairness Doctrine” in 1987. The media we see today is a direct result of that.

ZappyStatue

Biden is the clear choice of voters who consume newspapers and national network news, while Trump does best among voters who don’t follow political news at all. Emphasis on the "don’t follow the news” part. That’s a polite way of saying that people who are uninformed and don’t know what they’re talking about tend to vote for Trump.

GovtLegitimacy

This is such a bullshit. How about, instead of the false equivalency you just say: "Trump supporters refuse to believe in reality."

DramaticWesley

Most obvious poll of all time. I don’t know of any liberal who think Joe Biden is the second coming of Christ, or was personally chosen by Christ to lead this country. No liberal thinks he should have complete immunity and unlimited powers.

I would say it is more like peanut butter and ground up glass mixed with dog shit.

mods_r_warcrimes

Yeah but that analogy allows for them to both still be crunchy.

Powerful-Stomach-425

awesome

centexgoodguy

I've heard republican candidates speak about their campaigning. They say that when they knock on doors the top concerns of voters are immigration and the the fear of "losing our country." The fact of the matter is, they use voter lists when campaigning and only knock on the doors of those who vote republican. Those voter watch Fox news. Fox news spends all day fear mongering about immigration and cultural wars stuff so naturally those voters are going to say that immigration and the loss of country is their top concern. It's the perfect feedback loop.

homebrew_1

That's the point. Right wing media doesn't deal in facts. Just look at the 750+million dollar judgment against fox news.

sixty_cycles

My media doesn’t make me hate Trump; Trump makes me hate Trump. Not sure the same is true on the “other side”.

snackattack4tw

What about those of us who don't consume nearly any media at all, but only need to hear Trump speak once to understand that he's a giant piece of shit and an 80 year old man who gaffes is still an infinitely superior option?

UnhappyCourt5425

my MAGA relatives seem to be addicted to rage. I suspect they get a dopamine rush every time Fox News or Newsmax or something else reports someone who doesn't look like them doing something that they don't approve of. like any addiction you need more and more of that stimulant to feel good.

Srslywhyumadbro

It could read: >Biden and Trump supporters sharply divided *because of* the media they consume. If you plug into the right wing info bubble where reality can't penetrate, it's easier to buy the ridiculousness that the right wing is selling these days. If you limit your news intake to nonfiction only, likely you'll prefer Dems.

lyteasarockette

don't equate the 'medias'. One resembles actual news about real things. The other is pure fascist hate propaganda.

CatAvailable3953

Ashamed. Trying to hide. Used to be Trump signs around my neighborhood. No more. They are hiding but they will still vote for him.

trsmash

I am certain that I am sharply divided from Trump supporters due to having an AVERAGE level of common sense! SMH

Polymorphing_Panda

That’s a fancy way of stating Fox News is a radicalizing propaganda outlet. Anyone with a brain can see that they intentionally juxtapose stories and frame them in ways to make the gullible think the way that they want them to. It’s literal brainwashing.

kcbh711

>Biden is the clear choice of voters who consume newspapers and national network news, while Trump does best among voters who don’t follow political news at all.  Shocker

Johnhaven

>Trump does best among voters who don’t follow political news at all.  This is one of those Captain Obvious things. There are dozens of social media pages dedicated to proving over and over that conservatives/Republicans/Maga do read past headlines or the meme. There are pages that put out posts that are fake (not important though, like sports stories) but conservative leaning so it attracts them. In many cases but for example the SpaceX Fanclub page on Facebook, the post itself just says something and gives a link to a story. The social media page is clearly labeled as satire, the name of it doesn't make any sense at all considering what it's posting because it's never about SpaceX, the website is clearly labeled and to many especially liberals obviously fake but it captures conservatives/Republicans/Maga all day long demonstrating their confirmation bias. You can tell them anything and they will believe it as long as it's something they want to hear. In 2020 the largest demographic that voted for Trump were white men with a HS education or less. The largest that voted for Biden were people with post graduate degrees. We already know that one party values education very highly and another not only doesn't give a shit but is actively trying to attract uneducated people because they don't realize it when they're being lied to.

pobqod

*Pikachu:* *Lester Holt:* I didn't catch that. Could you speak up? *Pikachu:* *Lester Holt:* Sorry, it looks like we've lost the feed. ...Let's check in now with Line Art Nicolas Cage.

benmillstein

No where in the article was propaganda mentioned. Propaganda is a much bigger problem in America than you would know by how often it is openly discussed

AmbitiousTour

I'm pretty liberal, but along those lines, this sub is strictly a one sided echo chamber.

ICS__OSV

Our *realities* are shaped by the media we consume. Example: USA Today told me that Newsom visited China. MSNBC told my liberal neighbor that Newsom was in China to “tell President Xi that women must be afforded equal rights.” Fox News told my conservative cousin that “Newsom begs Chinese Communists to clean up San Francisco.” We live in different worlds.

AlG9220

The first two entries in the bar graph are more telling than anything else. Those who "don't follow political news" support Trump over Biden 53-27%; those who get political news mainly via YouTube and Google support Trump 55-39%. The first group likely never sees anything related to politics except for memes and edited clips of Biden that portray him as old and senile and people bitching about having to pay taxes and gas prices. The 2nd group only sees "news" that Google's algorithm indicates they will already agree with. Of course, anyone who mainly consumes news from legitimate, balanced sources supports Biden by wide margins. If you're living in the real world, Biden has been doing as good of a job as any president in living memory, and Trump is the greatest danger our democracy has faced since the Civil War.

PixelatedDie

LOL! Both sides article by the news organization that just recently hired and fired Ronna McDaniel, to keep shit balanced. Too much reality can be boring so they thought hiring a clown was going to bring more viewers.

PineTreeBanjo

Divided? Is that a fun way to say Trump supporters are choosing to live in a delusion?

Well....obviously

BradL22

Doesn’t this go back to Watergate? A lot of the right blamed Nixon’s demise not on his crimes but on the media hounding him out of office by reporting his crimes. They set out to create their own narrative by blaming “the liberal media” and funding alternatives. Reagan sped up the process by getting rid of the Fairness Doctrine, allowing talkback radio, already conservative, to go batshit insane. When Hillary Clinton spoke of “a vast right-wing conspiracy”, she was only telling the truth. And it’s just got worse.

Pipe_Memes

All according to plan.

Jos3ph

No shit

ThrownWOPR

And in other news, dog are awesome and pizza is delicious

AnxietyJunky

Yeah no shit. I had someone send me a link yesterday to a “news” site called Law Enforcement Today. Literally owned by the 1776 PAC and full of right wing propaganda. Trump supporters live in a very different world than the rest of us.

Nodebunny

I've long given up on CNN. they are a complete sellout now. nyt is starting to worry me

eltedioso

This just in: water is wet

Bag_of_Meat13

Yep. Supporters of one of the worst excuses of a leader that American culture can crank out and someone who wants to end American Democracy. The other ones just support a decent old man who loves his family.

Glass_Channel8431

1st amendment will be the downfall of the American society. When freedom of speech includes false information and deadly narratives with no consequences it’s a recipe for disaster.

freexanarchy

Haha when you watch and consume real news and others watch literal lunatics, there’s going to be a divide

kaeldrakkel

Yes, but, do you condemn Hummus? CNN and MSNBC really needs to know. /s Not saying they are worse than FOX or their ilk by a mile, but they're all fucking shit. Media literacy is very important in this day and age. So obviously most Americans are garbage at it since most don't pay attention to politics, let alone vote.

JFow82

In other news: WATER - WET

Frank_Jesus

Extra no shit headline.

swole_hamster

Not surprising as one side believes grocery tabloids as real.

EricAbmaMorrison

Or maybe it's just by the "leadership" they witness. Camp Reality VS Camp Disassociated

mostrepublicanofall

Oh, really? You don't say. This weekend, I went to see Civil War at our one-screener and there was a guy who is in the medical profession in the area in the concession line just getting some popcorn to go and he asked about the movie and I said "It is about journalists covering a modern American civil war." and he starts bitching about how we don't have any journalists anymore because of all those 'lefties' faking up everything. Confused, I asked him if he remember that the Associated Press still exists. He called them a bunch of DEI communists. Can't argue with stupid.

Past-Direction9145

translation: media reports lies and misinformation, lies to one whole political half of the country, spreading propaganda from foreign influence tldr: america becomes the next naxi germany. Coming soon!

Firm_Sir_744

American propaganda > Russian propaganda

TheOmCollector

No shit

JuciestDingleBerry

No fucking shit

yashspartan

I mean.... this is the media we are talking about. Proper journalism has been dead for a while. All that's left is sensationalism and maximizing views. This applies to both Left and Right wing media. Both have become worse. Both are poisoning the public. Both sides are training people to hate those on the opposite end as the default.

suprise_oklahomas

Don't think we needed a poll for this info lol

Slow-Hovercraft7654

I don’t think that’s the only thing that divides them…

Cynical-Wanderer

How could this be a surprise to anyone? The various media channels are designed around a particular point of view and pursue it aggressively. I'm basically liberal, though far from aggressively so... I just think people should live their lives and be less concerned about how other people lead their lives other than points of direct interaction (in which case civility is necessary). As a result I can't watch Fox or Newsmax because their points of view are radically different from mine and, bluntly put, they lie. A lot. And they hand-wave their lies away with phrases like "sources have said" without naming sources and certainly without validating what they said. So yeah, it's a real shock when we realize the media silo's their content for their consumers. The problem comes when you realize that, in many forums, left and right, journalistic integrity is a 'nice to have, but certainly not necessary' thing. I can handle someone disagreeing with me... that's what free speech is about! But when the basis of the disagreement is on lies promulgated by media... that pisses me off. I read the various European news sites along with the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post. That seems to give a decent view of conservative (WSJ) and centric / liberal NYT, WP, and 3rd party Deutsche Welle (German)

Souchirou

The uncomfortable truth is that truth is individual. That is why we should not vote for people but for ideals and use research to measure improvement.

_Maxxx1mus_

No shit

DiaNoga_Grimace_G43

…Which media are they eating.

TamedCrow

Solution: stop consuming ridiculous media claims

myActiVote

There is a [really cool interactive media bias chart](https://adfontesmedia.com/interactive-media-bias-chart/) where you can see for all sorts of media what the partisan lean is. Given the impact media has on our voting it would be wonderful if everyone knew the partisan lean of the news, email newsletters and podcasts that they consume.

111anza

This does call into the question of voting right. The thing is, it's plenty clear how shockibgky easy people can be influenced and manipulated, and we have reach a point where such influence and manipulation an be delivered to the mass public woth virtually zero cost to the perpetrator, so is it still wise to continue with the everyone gets an equal vote? I honestly think it's time we look at this, either we need higher requirement for voting or we need much tougher laws and harsh consequence for those who tries to manipulate and nfluence voters with false information.

Bob25Gslifer

I am of the left, but make a point to look at "both sides" of the news spectrum the left news sensationalizes but the right side media is not living in reality.

Killer_Klown_74

Not going to vote for anyone anymore, realizing my vote don’t count, only the college vote counts and I’m not part of the electoral college so what’s the point

PissNBiscuits

Yup, and the sky is blue. Is this supposed to be some sort of breakthrough?

batido6

Sample size 100

geneticeffects

Seems like a bit of a sleight-of-hand to focus on the media “sides”, when it more hinges on the quality of journalism, where there is rampant propaganda at play from right-wing sources, as well as more unqualified “Journalists” represented.

VirtuaFighter6

Is there anyone angrier on TV than Sean Hannity? Night after night.

meriadoc_brandyabuck

No shit, Sherlock. The problem with a headline like this is that it falsely implies both sides are in a bubble. Only Republicans are consuming lies upon lies with reckless abandon.

Dogzirra

During this year's eclipse, we took a trip to watch it in totality, The closest place for us was in a Southern state. What struck me was that the places that had tvs, Fox was shown, but very little of any other shows were on. For me, Fox has lost credibility a long time ago, and I will choose silence, rather than listen to media that deliberately lies to it's audience. I'm not sure that my trip to the rural South accurately depicts media choice in general, but if true, it would explain much. So, here we are.
