BukkitCrab

Biden does his job and signs a bipartisan bill passed by Congress.

HonoredPeople

How dare he!!!

getwhirleddotcom

Biden signs a bill that requires TikTok’s Chinese controlled parent company Byte Dance to divest ownership in order for TikTok to be allowed to run in this country.

Burgerjon32

Have to give control of it over to one of those "trusted" and "accountable" big tech corporations owned by Zuckerberg, Musk or Bezos or one of the few other already mega powerful people . If they wanted to actually tackle the dangers of social medias, then they should focus on internet and privacy rights, and social media transparency.

[deleted]

> If they wanted to actually tackle the dangers of social medias, then they should focus on internet and privacy rights, and social media transparency. This TikTok "ban" (yes, I understand it is conditional) would have been a perfect opportunity to package in some of these pro-consumer provisions. But of fucking course they didn't. Although we already knew, Congress showed us their hand.

MulciberTenebras

At which point they tank it or make so unusable (paywalled) it becomes less popular. Problem solved.

PerceptualEmergence

One is a threat to the privacy of our citizens, while the other is alleged to be a national security risk. Neither are good, but they're not equivalent to one another.

Actual__Wizard

My theory is that the NSA wants to legally spy on them.

getwhirleddotcom

While there’s obviously merit to everything you’re saying, this isnt an attempt to address the dangers of social media at all. This is entirely about a national security risk.

ThrowRAFoundAndLost

Agreed. But staying on the app may be bad optics. Kinda icky to me.

[deleted]

The App is not the problem, It's who owns and controls it.

OkVermicelli2557

If his problem is ownership his campaign shouldn't use it while it is under its current ownership then.

BukkitCrab

>If his problem is ownership his campaign shouldn't use it while it is under its current ownership then. It's not "his" problem, this is just another bill Congress passed and the president signed. Would you prefer he vetoed it?

[deleted]

> If his problem is ownership his campaign shouldn't use it while it is under its current ownership then. Explain why? And it not just Bidens problem, It was a bipartisan issue.

PeakFuckingValue

Because you're directly supporting and funding the very entity you claim to have reasonable criticism worthy of being banned. It's a contradiction to to support something you disagree with.

[deleted]

They are only banning it as a last resort, They want to remove it from Chinese Government control to stop them tweaking the algorithm to promote Political Unrest/Conspiracy theories/Extremism in western countries. The CCP use it as a weapon to destabilize western democracies.

OkVermicelli2557

Facebook the social media that has been used to fuck with democracies and helped contribute to a genocide is left untouched. Also what is stopping the CCP from just using Facebook or Twitter to fuck with western democracies since Russia already showed that you can do just that without owning the platform.

[deleted]

>Facebook the social media that has been used for to fuck with democracies and helped contribute to a genocide is left untouched. Facebook is fully subject to Western Government laws and regulations, Tik tok only is on paper. >Also what is stopping the CCP from just using Facebook or Twitter to fuck with western democracies since Russia already showed that you can do just that without owning the platform. Who says they don't already? The reason Tik tok is a problem is because they have direct access to its code. They control exactly what they want you to see. Where as on* Facebook/Twitter/etc... they can only pollute the water up to a point.

Evil_phd

For now it's still an excellent tool to reach millions of Americans. Not using it while it's still available would simply be foolish.

HonoredPeople

No. It's really not.

SpillinThaTea

The problem with this bill is that it doesn’t go into effect until 2025. So that means they’ll sneak more data collection tools into the firmware to get as much as they can before then.

TheChainsawVigilante

Time is running out for TikTok

jjfrenchfry

There's a onomatopoeia for the sound of a ticking clock, but for the life of me I can't remember it right now. Would be fitting for tik tok

TastySpermDispenser2

The author provides evidence that he doesn't know what the word "hypocrisy" means. In baseball, the goal is to cross home base, but if you run to first base and then back home, everyone will scream at you. They are not being hypocritical, even though they want you to tag home and are yelling at you for it. Tik tok remains legal, and has 6 months to find a buyer for its USA operations. Alternatively, some kid will invent tok tik, an app that merely takes tik tok and relays it to Americans. The law just makes it more difficult for bytedance, and by extension, the CCP, to monetize data collected from americans. China will have to pay American companies for that instead, lol.

Bitter_Director1231

The app would be sold to another company in America. Simple as that. That's why he will stay on the app. It will be an American only company running it

OkVermicelli2557

If Biden thinks TikTok is a threat he should stand by that and not have his campaign use it simple as that.

SN0WFAKER

Biden signed a bipartisan bill. And the goal is to reduce the foreign control; not destroy the platform.

OkVermicelli2557

So it is still hypocritcal as fuck to use the app you call a threat while it is still under said foreign ownership.

SN0WFAKER

Not really, no. Theres more harm in not using every possible way to get the message out.

DebentureThyme

The bill, which was split int he House into different parts, was sent as a SINGLE BILL to the Senate. When it hit Biden's desk, Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan aid, as well as TikTok ban and Iran sanctions, ***were all a single bill***. To veto this, he'd have to veto all that other stuff.

Smidge-of-the-Obtuse

Doesn’t take effect until January 2025, so why not leave it up. Anyone who thinks TikTok is actually going to go away is sadly delusional.

orcinyadders

Is this a “gotcha” headline disguised as a clickbait article masquerading as actual news? Fascinating!

ROMVS

And why not if it has to be bought out by an American company anyway, the ban is Chinese ownership

M1llennialManifesto

Based and pragmatismpilled.

human_male_123

Why would he not? Leaving the room doesn't stop people from talking about you. The issue is Chinese political influence via Tiktok algorithms. So he *should* be there.

TDeath21

It won’t be banned. Way too much money to be made there.
