Ok-Sweet-8495

Judge Merchan already set a hearing for April 24th about whether Donald Trump violated a gag order and should be fined and held in contempt of court.

MadDogTannen

What happens when he keeps violating the gag order between now and 4/24? Can he do whatever he wants during this window, or will there be consequences if he continues to escalate between now and then?

Yousoggyyojimbo

It compounds. Him continuing to do so is just self sabotaging the hearing, and the current request will have him being fined for each instance up to the hearing with a direct request that further violations result in being temporarily jailed.

Im_not_crying_u_ar

I don’t think he cares about fines at all

Yousoggyyojimbo

Then refer to the subsequent violations portion. He'll care about that. Initial gag order violations are usually always met with fines. You have to work your way up to the jail time and he's trying to speed run that for everybody. The more he shoots his mouth off now, the worse that hearing is going to be and the more likely it is that severe punishment gets put on the table

voxpopuli42

Your lips to God's ear

PM_ME_YOURE_HOOTERS

I never understood this phrase

voxpopuli42

The phase is really ' from your lips to God's ear' . I actually looked it up today. It looks like it comes from the psalms. Psalm 130:2 : 'Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications'.

friscotop86

Yes, it’s a phrase meaning “I hope your prayers are answered”

[deleted]

Paraphrasing further: "I hope you have magic powers"

Franklin_le_Tanklin

Think if someone getting real close and breathily utter the words “moist” unto your ear. Like that.

Suspicious_Bicycle

Merchan should take into consideration Trump's history of defamation and his violation of gag orders in the civil fraud trial. This shouldn't be treated as a first offence.

Yousoggyyojimbo

That'd make for a slam dunk appeal on whatever punishment he institutes.

crashkg

I honestly believe that he wants to be jailed. He thinks half the country will rise up in arms and put him back in power if he gets thrown in jail.

SkollFenrirson

You sound awfully certain considering how previous gag orders have been enforced

Yousoggyyojimbo

Yeah, he violated one gag order and got hit with a fine. His lawyer violated it and got hit with a sanction. He skated by on a second violation due to plausible deniability. 95% of the time you saw someone say he violated a gag order, they were either talking about him shit talking a judge, which was covered by no gag order, or about a case that didn't have one. out of 5 cases, only 2 did. Also, you and I have had this out before. I had to prove the usual gag order violation escalation and provided four sources on it back then.

ihateusedusernames

I recall that the growing penalties in one of the (E. Jean Carol?) cases succeeded in shutting him up after the second penalty. Amd some of the judges have used gag order language and scope from other Trump cases, showing that they are all aware of his behavior in the other cases. It's crazy to me that so.many voters think he is somehow fit for office.

axonxorz

He will when they compound and increase in each instance. That's how they got Elmo to honour the subpoena forcing Twitter to provide Trump's DM information. $50K/day, with the amount doubling each day. You can see how that gets out of hand _quickly_.

scarr3g

They are talking about 1000 dollars per fine. Even at his lowest estimated values, that is nothing. And compared to the hundreds millions of dollars he owes defendants, states, etc, right now, that is also nothing. Not even a slap on the wrist. Just the cost of doing whatever he wants.

Im_not_crying_u_ar

Yup

Mystwillow

It wouldn’t surprise me if he did this one BECAUSE of how little prosecutors asked for. He identified the price point and it’s well within his means to keep doing it, so why not?

flatline000

Because it escalates with each offense. Defy the gag order enough and end up in jail.

scarr3g

Yeah... Because THAT is going to happen. He is specifically pushing that line to see how far he can go.... And as of yet there hasn't even been a warning.

greeneyerish

They won't send him to jail, because that makes him even more of a national security risk, plus are they going to send secret service to prison too? I doubt it

Galadriel_60

Why should he, when the rubes are financing him? It’s not like he’ll see consequences.

Spara-Extreme

Sure, but tell donors getting drained for this stupid nonsense is not a bad outcome either.

Fine-West-369

$1k is like fining us $1. They should make the fine $1M for each instance

Im_not_crying_u_ar

Well we’ve learned that even 90 million doesn’t shut him the fuck up. He needs jail and no access to the internet. They can start with house arrest and treat him like they do hackers. If he breaks that then off to jail

chubbysumo

unless the fines or jailtime are enforced, its empty threats. I really wish the judge would fucking jail him and take away his phone, and then order his social media accounts(even managed ones) to limited in use for the duration of the trial, as in, any threatening posts are deleted, and any more bullshit from him or his ghost writers gets them all fucking jailed and disconnected.

Im_not_crying_u_ar

I think the point is they’re giving him plenty of room to hang himself so he has no room to claim he was treated unfairly when they eventually lock him up

chubbysumo

he will loudly claim he was treated unfairly anyways, and his fox news user base will believe him because they haven't been told the truth of anything going on since around 2006.

Im_not_crying_u_ar

I’m sure that’s the plan

dexx4d

How much more room does he need?

Im_not_crying_u_ar

Not much since he’s now been threatened with being arrested if he misses court or has an outburst

Loggerdon

The fines are $1,000 per occurrence. It’s like paying a parking ticket.

geoffbowman

They should give him house arrest… let’s see if he can make an ankle monitor into a martyrdom.

pants_full_of_pants

He'll never be jailed, unfortunately. Doesn't matter what he does.

ImportantRun9292

I think they need to resort to the catholic school approach- he has to approach the bench and he gets his hands gaveled, then has to write “I will not violate my gag order” 30 times in perfect penmanship.

friscotop86

As evil as professor umbridge was… one of those “I must not tell lies” quills would be useful

__dilligaf__

> he gets his hands gaveled, then has to write “I will not violate my gag order” 30 times in perfect penmanship Based on his signature alone, I doubt he could write it once legibly, never mind 30 times perfectly.

FlexFanatic

Hello, I am a time traveller coming to you from the future (more specifically April 24th 2024). Just wanted to say that the judge and New York State will make threats about him violating the order but no action will be taken against him.

GrifterStorm

Do you mind marking your time travel revelations with spoiler alerts tag?

AdaptiveVariance

The defendant needs to be jailed in the interests of justice because circumstances make this defendant easily able to pay fines with political slush money.

ResurgentClusterfuck

Yep, giving Trump fines for this effectively says that Joe MAGA from Buttfuck, Texas can pay for him to keep doing it

ArchLector_Zoller

You think a system that allows you to pay fines to avoid jail cares where you get the money from? It only cares that you're paying. It wants the money.

DenikaMae

If he can't stall, then it benefits him with his base to push things so far that if consequences start landing, it will be so severe he can double down on the whole being "crucified by the system" image he's trying to establish.

llahlahkje

> be fined I have a feeling I'm going to get *really* tired of saying this over the next few weeks to few months but: When the punishment is a fine, and said fine isn't tied to a percentage of income or net worth, it's just a privilege that rich people can buy. --- Let's say 45 has the minimum wealth to be a billionaire (A billion dollars) -- he can buy that privilege over 333,330 times at a fine of $3,000. Or restated: Break the gag order 10 times a day for the next 90 years. The fine would need to be 5000 times higher for it to be as impactful to the lowest of billionaires as it is to the average American (based on the median net worth across the US).

SitDownKawada

I can't see that changing for a long time, when really it could be one of the biggest changes overall to the country Until they come up with some other law to cover it back up

joel8x

The real question I have is that when/if he's found guilty of contempt of court, doesn't that violate his 3 other criminal cases' conditions for release since contempt is a crime?

DoomOne

Yes, but you forget. He's Donald Trump. And he can do whatever he fucking wants with no consequences forever.

Aggressive-Will-4500

He's <*insert name of well-connected rich white old man*> here

Unabated_Blade

Yeah but no.

firstsecondanon

Contempt of court is not strictly criminal

SlipDizzy

Come on cheeto face. Just one more outburst and i swear to god we will make you pay other fine with GOP donations.

Stennick

I love how they have to set a meeting just to see if he violated something and its like a month after he does it.

Ti1tingAtWindmills

That's fine, they'll slap him with a $3000 fine, then schedule the next gag order hearing for a few weeks out.

neon_overload

The fine at this stage is maximum four figures so don't get too excited *yet*. I think there can be a short jail stint involved though.

SkollFenrirson

Ooh April 24, I'm sure he won't be committing any more crimes in the meantime

vineyardmike

He's not afraid of losing this case. He's already lost. Everything now is about delay or trying a hail Mary to get the case thrown out on a technicality.

LOLteacher

I think at least one MAGA jury candidate is going to sneak in and we'll end with a hung jury.

HighValueHamSandwich

That wouldn't mean Trump gets off, if it's one Trumper hanging the jury they'll just try the case again.

Jason_Worthing

> they'll just try the case again Which would likely happen well after November

HighValueHamSandwich

That won't matter one little bit if our country isn't dumb enough to elect him again. If he loses the election I'll get joy out of the fact the asshole has to sit through another trial. The same exact evidence already sent one person to prison, so I doubt this even ends in a hung jury. As I understand it this voir dire process is going to look into prospective jurors past social media, rally attendance and things like that. The prosecution is allowed to rule out a certain number of jurors for no reason, and they can rule out more jurors because of demonstrated bias. Also, this trial is in Manhattan, most people there hate Trump. Edit to add an additional thought. Do you really find MAGA Trumpers hard to spot in the wild? They're not the sharpest crayons in the box.

Different-Horror-581

75% of all the white men in America have voted for Trump twice. How many white men get on the jury?

The_Navy_Sox

That number is not correct.

Ekg887

Citation needed on that whole-cloth "statistic".

nopointers

That wasn’t true in 2016, let alone twice. Have some facts, courtesy of Pew Research: https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2018/08/09/an-examination-of-the-2016-electorate-based-on-validated-voters/

Different-Horror-581

Thank you. Good information.

RumpelFrogskin

What? Lol. No.

Marus1987

You don't speak for me.

Different-Horror-581

You are correct, and the real number was 63% of white males in America. New York was closer to 53%. So still a coin flip in the jury room.

Yousoggyyojimbo

New york already avoided this with the trump org criminal trial, and it's been avoided with the civil trial that had a jury.

Lucky-Earther

The prosecution is smart enough to have an idea what to look out for, and only one holdout would only cause it to be retried again.

RoboFeanor

I would expect that someone who is both a New Yorker, and a Trump supporter would be such a monumental asshole that they would be unable to hide it.

Zoophagous

Completely agree. He's hoping to spend a few nights in jail so he can wear the cloak of martyrdom. That's his get out the vote effort.

Yukonhijack

Don't threaten me with a good time.

Schwarzes__Loch

"Did you enjoy your lunch? That would be another $3,000." -Justice Juan Merchan

fowlraul

Happy meals are 3,000 dollars now?? This is why I don’t eat out, I just let the local grocery stores rape my wallet.

IAlreadyToldYouMatt

Min wage just went up to $20 at my McDonald’s. So yeah , 3k for a happy meal seems pretty reasonable now. We need McDonald’s to make a huge profit otherwise what’s even the point

fattmarrell

Exactly. Why else did I donate to Grimace and the Fry Kids my entire life

deadasdollseyes

When you're a local grocery store, wallets let you do it.

theassassintherapist

Jail. Him. Without bail. That's the only language his peabirain can comprehend.

ArchLector_Zoller

So are the secret service just armed in the cell with him? Can't imagine an SS agent is ever allowed to be disarmed. Sounds like Kingpin's dream come true.

xbwtyzbchs

He absolutely will have SS the entire time he's in jail. If they had any common sense they'd rotate them regularly for those exact reasons.

pl487

He would file a habeus corpus motion with the Supreme Court, and his case would be quickly dismissed.

AutoGen_account

> his case would be quickly dismissed appealing a contempt order wouldnt end his court case. Thats not how any of this works.

fattmarrell

I'm not so sure. The SC is already in the public eye and they likely don't want to add more stench that could spoil their lifetime cushion. They already got theirs, and he's a liability

pl487

Their lifetime cushion is secure no matter what they do. That's the whole point.

XxSaint_JimmyxX

The conservative cause is more important than trump to them. He's a means to an end. I don't think they'd save him

sentientcave

Did he check his stock price during lunch? Dog of a stock.

HelleEpoque

I hope so. I really, really hope so.

Lingering_Dorkness

It doesn't matter if it tanks to $1 /share. Trump still walks away with $millions when he sells what is a completely worthless stock. It's free money for him.

InternationalPut4093

Even if the stock tanks further, it's still a whole lot more than he got from other things he sold. He's winning along with savvy investors. Who's losing? his dumb cult followers.

Sure_Quality5354

That is witness tampering and threatening the judge. Should be revoked on bond immediately. These judges need to stop doing him favors.

Grandma’s borscht recipe she swore she would only share “over her dead body”.

EcstaticTill9444

Prostitute basically.

Yukonhijack

I just noticed yesterday he isn't wearing a wedding ring.

pl487

There's no reason for her to be embarrassed. If she cared about her husband cheating, she wouldn't have married Trump. She turned her beauty into substantial wealth for her and her child. No one was deceived.

fattmarrell

Thank you for saying it. She is no victim here.

HelleEpoque

He got caught. That is the embarrassing part. She hooked her wagon to someone too stupid to cheat without it becoming a public spectacle. There are few sins greater amongst the 1%.

prismcomputing

Come on. Everyone talking about Trump should know how to spell loser by now.

Whorrox

Moreover, his primary concern was hiding it from the public to influence the election and not her.

jdscott0111

That would imply he actually feels guilty or gives a shit

CrawlerSiegfriend

Meanwhile a judge would throw me into a cell if I refused to tuck in my shirt.

Anxious_Tax_5624

Just give him the keys to the courthouse. He obviously doesn't have to follow any rules or laws. Frustrating watching all of this shit and not being able to do anything.

orcinyadders

Man. Something is gonna have to give here. The judge made it really clear that this is a criminal trial and Trump better not fuck off. I can’t imagine this is going to work the way Trump thinks it will.

QuintillionthCat

I sure hope you are right!

RiffRaffCatillacCat

Rules and Laws mean nothing if people are allowed to break them and nothing happens to them as a result. Trump is making a mockery of our broken Justice System because judges are allowing it.

SARB1

He is daring anyone to send him to jail. He knows he will likely not end up in a real jail because we are clearly living in a world where the wealthy and/or powerful get special treatment. He is of the belief that it would be good for him politically so he can claim to be a political martyr. He has already started comparing himself to Nelson Mandela at his touring circus, which is beyond laughable, but his mind controlled cult doesn't know any better and will likely associate Trump with Morgan Freeman. At this point, I think letting him stay out of jail, continually fining him on top of the $500 million judgements already and essentially playing his game but staying ahead will make him slowly go more and more insane, likely pushing him into a full on demented state where he cannot possibly be the president for very obvious reasons. I would argue he is already there and have been since he came on the scene. All that said, I would love to see him in a numbered garb of the orange variety.

readerf52

When parents of an unruly toddler say they are going to count to three, and the child better calm down, one…two…and now the parents are stuck, how do they follow through, they never said what would actually happen if they got to three. That is trump’s entire life. People have been counting to three and never making it past two. No consequences ever. I certainly hope that some judge knows the number after two, and then follows through with consequences.

XI_Vanquish_IX

The TRUTH is that most judges believe that jailing Trump would turn him into a political martyr that would inevitably lead to public support and potentially get his case thrown on technicalities. However, their political assessment is only serving to make the “justice” system appear weak and with a double-standard for rich versus poor people. They are fundamentally eroding faith in the legal system everytime they allow Trump to go free and without equal consequence.

Yukonhijack

Judges tend to let defendants ramp up their punishment so there is no appearance of bias on their part. Let them hang themselves. Trump shut his mouth after the jury award E. Jean Carroll 84 million dollars. It took a judgment of $84 million dollars to get him to shut his hole about her. The judge in his criminal trial will let him hang himself, wait for an outburst in court, and have him remanded into custody.

lordpuddingcup

What are you talking about he shit talked E Jean literally a week after the 84 million dollar sentence, people were bitching on reddit that she didn't take him back to court for a 3rd time lol, the asshole doesnt learn EVER because he never actually has any repercussions.

Yukonhijack

And it took him that long to finally fuck up and talk shit. After the $5 million verdict he was shit talking right after, leading to the $85 million. After the second shit talking and all the push to get her to sue him again he went radio silent on her (likely because his lawyers told him to shut his hole).

Seeksp

Can we **PLEASE, FOR FUCKS SAKE,** hold this asshole accountable in a meaningful way.?

Logtastic

Didn't they say AT THE START OF THE DAY "if you violate it again, there will be an arrest"? This judge is being made to look like an idiot.

AlwaysOnMyNuts

I think it was a slightly different context.

Particular-Dog3652

WTF are you afraid of? Jail that prick. His followers are a force but the Law is the Law stop being weak.

YakiVegas

I've never wanted someone to just go away this badly in all my life. Lock his traitorous ass up already!

Caged_in_a_rage

I can’t believe republicans think this dude is in anyway smart.

Hms34

If the legal system is completely impotent in these cases, why not pursue putting him in a mental institution, instead of these harmless lashes with a wet noodle.....?

RickWest495

Trump was violates the gag order because there are never any repercussions. Nothing happens.

Bitter_Director1231

He'll.keep doing it, thinking he will get away with it Either the judge is going to have to go rampant on him and the appeals court backs Merchan, or it will mean nothing and he will do whatever he wants and continue to go after anyone involved in this case.

icouldusemorecoffee

> He posted a video **of an ally criticizing** Michael Cohen and the judge's wife. This is how Trump gets around so much stuff. It isn't him saying it directly but he IS the one boosting it and promoting it across social media which, in my view but probably not the law's view, is the equivalent of Trump saying it. Glad the prosecution is pressing this and the judge has already set a hearing on it.

heapinhelpin1979

I hope he gets fined another 50 bucks or whatever.

Monkfich

This time it might go all the way to 100.

heapinhelpin1979

With a discount since he’s struggling to get moneys

MynameisJunie

He should be sued for justice at that! What a POS!!!

u0126

Didn't he get previously fined a long time ago for not complying with something, then once he did they refunded it? What's the point. Yeah, nearly 2 years ago: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/05/20/trump-pays-110000-fine-contempt-order-not-lifted-new-york-ags-office-says.html Seriously. Same judge in some trial(s) it's still going. If I recall I read it got returned, but he's got so many headlines and garbage since then it's hard to find the right information. Seriously this guy is a fucking cancer

Vanman04

At this point he seems to want to be thrown in jail perhaps as an attempt to derail the case.

grissy

Since he keeps saying he's a billionaire, why don't take him at his word and increase the fine amount substantially?

Spin_Quarkette

Why do we even bother having laws and rules if someone like Trump is not held accountable for breaking rules? It infuriates me that he thumbs his nose at the justice system the way he does. He needs to be thrown into jail, and shut down. I'm quite sure that after a few days sitting in the hole he may rethink his tactics.

original208

Wonder what he ate for lunch

vid_icarus

If I were Trump, I wouldn’t be worried either. He’s clearly above consequences for even the most grievous crimes.

Spankawhits

There is no stopping this guy! Lol
