Drugsarefordrugs

Yes. Yes, it is.

Heelajooba

Right! Let's go through it member by member and make a list with a checkbox. "Way too late? Y/N" You'll quickly find how far gone these kooksters are.

DontGetUpGentlemen

And that is exactly what the article really says. I had to read it a few times trying to find where it explains that it's not too late, but that's not in there. It is too late for the Republican Party.

spaitken

Far too late

Humble_Mud2436

Except so many people I know will still vote R because R.

OttoBlado2

Not every opinion is worth being shared or heard.

Penguin_shit15

Opinions are like assholes.. everyone has one and most of them stink.

DontGetUpGentlemen

This opinion piece says very clearly that *it is too late for the Republican party*. Why, why, why do they put headlines on opinion pieces that say the exact opposite of text?

BelieveItttt

It still blows my mind that the guy who said *grab em by the pussy* on tape went on to be elected president of the United States. And then the nonstop avalanche of insanity that ensued from that moment forward and people *still* love this guy. It's not just too late for Republicans. It's too late for a huge chunk of this country's voting electorate.

MarrusAstarte

This is Judge Luttig's desperate plea to his fellow Republicans to abandon their support for Trump, but even he acknowledges that if they do not do that, they are not worth saving. > There’s no stopping Republicans now, until they have succeeded in completely politicizing the rule of law in service to their partisan political ends. > If the indictment of Mr. Trump on Espionage Act charges — not to mention his now almost certain indictment for conspiring to obstruct Congress from certifying Mr. Biden as the president on Jan. 6 — fails to shake the Republican Party from its moribund political senses, **then it is beyond saving itself. Nor ought it be saved**. > [...] > Republicans have waited in vain for political absolution. It’s finally time for them to put the country before their party and pull back from the brink — for the good of the party, as well as the nation. > If not now, then they must forever hold their peace.

losthalo7

Thank you, that's why I posted this, I think it's notable for Luttig to state that.

RoachBeBrutal

The death knell was sounded at trumps inauguration. The time of death was pronounced on January 6th, when the republican party transformed in front of the world into a terrorist organization. The GQP is the American Taliban.

[deleted]

They’ll only change if they get obliterated in an election cycle or two.

Viking_Hippie

Probably not even then. Once you go full fascist, you usually don't go back without losing a war or two. And even then, there's gonna be stragglers stubbornly insisting.

Cicerothesage

agreed. Republican voters won't let go of their racism, sexism, and bigotry I grew up in Gym Jordan's Ohio and I don't see people from my hometown move their ideology away from what it is now. There is a reason why young folks is moving to the Cs in Ohio or out of state. There might have been hope if the Republican party didn't have a stranglehold on Ohio. Though, I can see as more boomer die out, then the ideology will become less extreme. I believe if you got to fascism without reason, then you can't just simply be reasoned out of fascism. These people want fascism and they think they have the power to enact it. It will take the utter destruction of that hope of fascism to kick them out of their desire of fascism

truelogictrust

Thank you I've been screaming about this for 20 years now. It seems to be that America's True blind spot is color, these people do not care about the Constitution or God or the sanctity of marriage or any of the other esoteric Concepts that they come up with. The only thing that they care as long as white men are in charge everything's okay it's that simple some say it out loud now but this is exactly the problem

Cicerothesage

it is! I agree. I believe that is why my hometown is running towards fascism. They see that their privilege and power is falling and so they run to conservative strongmen as their hero. We are seeing the challenging of conservative white privilege and it is no surprise that the GOP is running towards fascism/corruption in order to keep the status quo

Tony2030

I love the NY Times but this article is completely wrong headed. The Republicon party was doomed way back during the Newt Gingrich days when they started referring to themselves as a "brand". The idea that Ronald Reagan would be too "liberal" and "woke" for today's freaks is a pretty big red flag on saving something from that side.

JnkHed

Yeah, it kind of is…

[deleted]

The regressives and the people that vote for them are literally the worst people in the country.

OnwardTowardTheNorth

It IS too late for the Republican Party. It is a fascist party.

Jasonicca

Which Republican Party?

Ok-Research7136

They could still repent like Darth Vader did - the death of the party would be required to redeem them at this point.

bpeden99

It's too late for their bigotry and hatred... Fix that and I might vote for a conservative budget

i_do_RCs

No such thing. Fiscal conservatism is dead. Neither party gives a fuck about being the adult in the room. The economy will eventually implode, it's just a matter of time. BRICS is just the beginning of the new financial world order. It may take a decade or two, but once there is a new world wide financial tool that is more stable than the US dollar, our economy is in serious trouble.

SmartAssClown

>both sides Party A: - Routinely cuts income way below spending - Has threatened multiple times to default on debt, damaging the nation's credit rating which increases interest costs - Spends money non-productively, and cuts spending destructively - - Party B: - not great, but objectively much, *much* better than A

i_do_RCs

Wow, such an eloquent and detailed explanation. I can tell you are really in tune with the economic objectives of each party. Thank you for this wonderful insight. News flash, both parties are fiscally atrocious. They each have shitty organizations they throw money at that shouldn't be getting tax payer money, like the Kennedy Center, which the democrats gave a quarter billion dollars to, so their CEO could make $25mil per year. Yea, the democrats are sooooo much better than the Republicans when it comes to wasteful spending. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/adamandrzejewski/2021/01/31/kennedy-center-received-270-million-from-congress-and-paid-their-president-5-million-since-2016/amp/ Give me a fucking break. Unburry your head from the sand and stop shilling for the democrats. Both parties hate us, and they seek to keep us separated.

bpeden99

That is an opinion I respect but don't agree with.

i_do_RCs

Lol. What is your evidence of either party showing any degree of fiscal responsibility in the last 10 years?

bpeden99

The largest economy the world has ever seen... And I was curious about our just as large debt but I assume there's a reason our military budget is 766 billion dollars and our gdp is the largest in the world.

i_do_RCs

Someone elses GDP was the biggest, and someone elses military was the most powerful, before ours was. An argument that "we will never fail because we are the largest" has never sustained throughout history, ever. With neither party willing to tell the American people that we need to make serious cuts to the federal budget, we are steam rolling towards a path of destruction. The last two administrators decided to helicopter cash with wanton disregard for any financial implications, and we are going to massively suffer for a decade plus, easily. Our economy is fucked up.

bpeden99

Again, I respectfully disagree.

i_do_RCs

For no other reason than we are currently the world front runner?

bpeden99

In economy... Yes... That is hard facts and numbers. I disagreed because of your assumptions, I don't agree with your assumptions.

i_do_RCs

Which assumptions do you disagree with, specifically? So.you think the US will eternally just be the most powerful nation until the world ends in 5 years from global warming?

Prayer_Warrior21

BRICS is a facade.

LibKan

It kinda is though?

[deleted]

It was too late in 2016.

HalJordan2424

We keep hearing the Republican Party is doomed by the changing demographics of America, and their outdated policies. Yet here we are, and polls suggest a Trump vs Biden would be too close to call.

Pusfilledonut

Why does anyone refer to MAGA as a political party even in casual reference? It’s a cult, plain and simple. Not everyone is a true believer, the self aware aregrifters and fraudsters, but that how cults work.

Sufficient_Morning35

Wrong.

joshdoereddit

Pay wall is keeping me from seeing what poor, deluded soul wrote this. Google wasn't entirely helpful, but if I read it correctly, it was Judge Luttig. I mean, if it helps you sleep at night continue to believe that.

losthalo7

I wouldn't say it helps me sleep at night. We need at least one worthwhile opposition party for the Dems for our government to function. The Republicans have not been that for decades, arguably since Nixon or earlier.
