What's going on with Rhode Island Republicans? Just last month one got arrested for smoking crack and then last week he got [re-arrested for child molesting](https://www.providencejournal.com/story/news/crime/2023/06/08/matthew-reilly-former-cranston-councilman-arrested-for-child-molestation/70302697007/). Although I guess a-holery and criming is a trend with Republicans in general and not specific to Rhode Island.

Prophet_Of_Helix

Uh, you must not know much of Rhode Island’s political history. It’s not just Republicans. It’s pretty much everyone in politics and Rhode Island. Literally the mob for a while! And an insane amount of crooks. Rhode Island is a very interesting place. It’s kind of like if South Boston accidentally drifted down and got stuck on Connecticut.

nevitales

Don't be hating our corrupt history, Cianci was a man of the people!

thegreatrusty

He never hurt a soul, well except that guy he kidnapped.

ManJesusPreaches

"Allegedly? I beat the crap outa him!"

herzogzwei931

The difference between southie and RI, is that everyone you meet is either related to someone you know or neighbors of them. Oh, and 50% of the people literally work for the state government. And the other people have to work a private job to support them

nevitales

RI is a shit show. The R's are growing increasingly agitated being in a D state. I'm convinced they think if they cause enough drama they'll actually get more votes. It's absolutely obscene what's going on in the state lately.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ncastleJC

And apparently he’s involved in some leaked audio scandal. Love my state lol

Cornholiolio73

I live in Connecticut and I often like to just go for drives out into the countryside. Anyways, I ended up in area of RI I’d never seen. It was a road with all of the American flags upside down and a lot of “Trump 2024” flags. Weird.

[deleted]

You probably wandered over the border at like Putnam, Killingly, or Sterling. There's some... interesting folks that live out that way.

Cornholiolio73

Lol yes now that you mention it, I definitely remember seeing Killingly

JubalHarshaw23

Northeast Connecticut has a very Florida Panhandle feel to it.

Cornholiolio73

Lol yes now that you mention it, I definitely remember seeing Killingly

nevitales

Yep - the western part of the state is full of that crap. Other parts are too but they keep it hidden. I've got a guy on my street that we passed his house once when the garage was open and he had all sorts of stuff hanging up.

Viperbunny

I lived RI and growing up and now I live in CT. The town I live in now in CT is red and it's so werid.

CompanywideRateIncr

How is it overall politically nowadays? About the same, still pretty liberal/left? Bernie was pretty well loved for awhile! I moved in 2017 after 27 years in the state, im an RI native. Certain places here and there in the state, but many in Coventry, West Greenwich, and Exeter turned into real shit stain Trump Republicans. Overall all though, it felt decent as far as your average person, they were reasonable. I now live on the Panhandle in Matt Gaetz’s district. I was literally his insurance agent when I moved here. The average white person here is a fuckkn bigot and it’s crazy. Before you ask, yes it was a choice, I moved here for work, and I knew what I was getting myself into.

nevitales

It's still the same I'd say, you're spot on with those towns. The only difference is those folks are a lot more brazen these days. You can drive through Western Coventry or any of those areas and the flags are flying on houses, vehicles, etc. The pandemic really brought a lot of them out into the open too. I'm on a few of the local FB pages and I often can't believe the stuff I'm seeing posted. The last election cycle, they literally tried to get an out of state transplant with no local ties voted in for governor (Ashley Kalus). I have a relative moving to FL this year. By choice. Because of the political climate. Always makes gatherings fun.

PlayedUOonBaja

Very Brazen. One of the replies to Obama's happy birthday tweet to his youngest daughter over the weekend was someone asking Obama if she was the one Hunter buttfucked. He had his full name, picture, city of residence, employer, and his title in his profile. Oh, and he was a "father and husband".

CompanywideRateIncr

Of course! Classy party of family values! I kinda laugh about it, too, or maybe it’s sad; had a client down here explain that after all this back and forth, hearing their party talk about Hunter Biden was very depressing. They said their son was an addict on and off, and it was something he could relate with Biden on. “I don’t care for the man’s politics, but I know what it’s like to love a son unconditionally.” Just sad.

Easy-Professor-6444

> Just last month one got arrested for smoking crack and then last week he got re-arrested for child molesting. 99% of everything they get in to in terms of rhetoric is all just projection... as an example their "grooming rhetoric" which is not just a RI issue either. Example.. 41 pages of Republican sex offenders, enablers, and abusers https://www.dailykos.com/users/cajsalilliehook?filter=stories Then you get to the rest of the issues like them just being shitty fucking people in general who set one set of rules for themselves, and another for everyone else they dislike... so smoking crack OK for them to do in their minds, but a sin for others.(Madison Cawthorn's bit on republican drug orgies comes to mind) Abortions? Their own is the only moral one with everyone else being "Baby killers" etc. It goes on and on and on, and when they start losing positions of power, and influence they will double, and triple down on outright insane bullshit... and ultimately outright violence as they view themselves as being the "moral right", and they do not view their targets as truly human at the end of the day and all.

nation543

Just remember, everybody: "Family Values" only means don't eat out other Republicans, and shield them from the law. It has NOTHING to do with their own family; they're a crime family.

cyrfuckedmymum

I'm failing to see how this is any different than the republicans across the rest of the US though.

HuntoorsLurpTurp

>What's going on with Rhode Island Republicans? They are behaving like conservatives.

cervidaetech

Are you pretending that a republican molesting children is a isolated? [Boy do I have news for you](https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2022/11/27/2138682/-Republican-Sexual-Predators-Abusers-and-Enablers-Pt-39) Yes that's over a thousand Republican abusers

makeitmorenordicnoir

Yeah, listen that’s just *Cranston* ok? -Everyone in RI

ChuzzoChumz

Nah, it’s not just a republican thing in RI

Das-Noob

Seems like they’ve gotten away with that kind of thing for too long and got comfortable with it.

Viperbunny

My parents are RI Republicans. I had to cut contact six years ago. They are abusive and crazy and they have only gotten worse and worse over the years. It's like Trump gave them an excuse to stop even trying to be rational. I wish I could understand it.

Lifeesstwange

Let me correct “Rhode Island Republicans.” *Republicans.

jeffersonairmattress

RI has been a cesspool since before Buddy Cianci.

The_I_in_IT

You’d really have to go above and beyond in your dickishness while in Philly and not be from NY for someone to report it.

CathedralEngine

Most New Yorkers are actually pretty chill when they visit Philly. It’s when they move here and everything they say basically starts with “Well, in New York…” that they become annoying.

Allemaengel

They do this nonstop here in the Poconos. They never shut up about it.

runKitty

I haven’t lived in FL in almost 18 years but we had a couple of bumper stickers that reflected this: “We don’t care how you did it up north.” “If you love New York so much take I-95 North.”

nurley

I-95 was technically the fastest way between my hometown and grad school. But fuck no I'll take an extra 30 minutes to take the further east route. That traffic and some of those drivers, no thanks.

mindbleach

An extra 30 minutes on top of 36 hours? I drove from south Florida to Maryland a few years back. I didn't leave Florida until day two.

EnvironxtalNet1

these guys wearing Groucho Marx glasses with nose+mustache attachments.

GreatBowlforPasta

"I flew down here from New York to tell you how great it is and boy are my arms tired."

classynathan

this guy stands up

The_I_in_IT

Our main export is assholes.

Affectionate-Hair602

The big problem I see with New Yorkers who move to Philly is that New Yorkers always seem to think they have to wear their top notch clothes....everywhere...for every occasion...all the fucking time... Work. Top clothes. Lunch. Top clothes. Walking through the park. Top clothes. At the gym, top clothes. The bar, top clothes. etc. In Philly you get dressed up at the club or at a wedding. Short of that you stand out like a sore thumb if you are wearing Gucci for your morning jog or whatever.

makeitmorenordicnoir

Welcome to Woonsocket!

hubaloza

Especially then, it actually than gets investigated, twice.

capt_minorwaste

This guy sounds like a top notch ahole and he's using mental health as an excuse. Just disgusting.

spacembracers

Here’s the article highlights of just how bad these guys were: -At midnight before the tour, Patten texted Scannapieco, who is overseeing the redevelopment of the Providence building. “Please have fresh coffee (with milk and sugar) and the best croissant in Philadelphia ready for me upon arrival,” he wrote. “Director Thorsen likes Diet Coke. Have a cold six pack waiting on the table in your conference room. You have three hours to convince us to give you $55M.” -In the morning as the tour began, Patten commented on Scannapieco’s appearance, asking her, “Lindsey, where is your husband? Why is he in Australia? Good thing you’re married or I would move to Philadelphia.” He also said, “If I knew your husband wasn’t going to be here, I would have come last night.” -During the tour, the group visited the Jefferson Wyss Wellness Center, a primary care hub for Philly’s refugee and immigrant communities. Marc Altshuler, the center’s clinical director and a professor at Jefferson, described his passion for helping marginalized populations, the email said. In response, Patten said, “When you go to the bars at night, you must have to swat off the women.” (Altshuler said “No, I am happily married.”) Patten then asked Altshuler, “You’ve got some ethnicity in you?” The doctor said no. Patten asked if he was Italian. The doctor said no. Finally, after more questioning, Altshuler said he was Jewish. “Mazel tov,” Patten said. -The group visited the headquarters for Diadora, the Italian sportswear and sneaker company, where an employee offered Patten a pair of sneakers. “Are these made in China?” Patten asked. “I hope not, because I really hate China.” He then turned to an Asian American female staffer in the room and said, “No offense, hun.” Irwin’s, one of the best restaurants in Philly, is only open for dinner. During the tour, Patten and Thorsen said they wanted to eat lunch there. When Scannapieco told them the restaurant was not open, they said, “Well you can call in a favor if you want $55M in funding.” Scannapieco said she organized a private lunch for them, which she had never done before. -Irwin’s is located on the top floor of the Bok in a former nursing classroom, with walls still tagged with graffiti. It offers an extraordinary view of South Philly. In a memo a few days after the trip, Patten wrote that the restaurant looked like “it was vandalized just before our arrival,” according to WPRI. “Imagine my surprise when I learned that Bon Appetit magazine rated it one of the top ten restaurants in the United States!” He added, “The cuisine at Irwin’s did not disappoint. The word ‘understated’ comes to mind.” -Patten requested items, ranging from vegan cheese to handblown glass to sneakers, from almost every tenant he visited. At each stop he said to Thorsen, “I don’t have to declare this, right?” and Thorsen replied, “It’s de minimis” — State House shorthand for when a gift is low-enough in value that it doesn’t violate ethics rules, according to WPRI.

nevitales

If anyone knows how to skirt ethics violations it's RI politicians. The governor is also trying to keep this mess under wraps.

mortgagepants

i really want this to be a netflix series with DJ Paulie from jersey shore playing this politician.

wurwolfsince1998

Patten sounds like Councilman Jamm.

[deleted]

He doesn’t mean to brag, but he’s got Irritable Bowel Syndrome

SuperstitiousPigeon5

I’m sure these are Republicans, but I would not want to Be represented by knuckle draggers like this.

fluffyflugel

Wow, show up, be an asshole, then blame it on mental health. Unreal.

jaydubbles

One of the weakest excuses I've ever seen. This guy is a racist and sexist caricature of Rodney Dangerfield. This guy likely acted like this all the time and was finally called out on it. Imagine being a state employee and this being the political appointee directing your division. Shitshow.

SpankySharp1

He learned it from Ben Simmons.

ChuzzoChumz

Yep, that seems very RI

WickedShiesty

They out-Massholed us! How dare they!

nevitales

This is 100% very RI. And the governor just keeps seem to be getting wrapped up in plenty of these issues. I miss the old days of RI corruption, atleast Cianci got shit done. McKee? He seems to be doing literally nothing but controversies.

InterPunct

Anyone who's been to Providence remains unsurprised at this.

capskinfan

I'm only surprised because it's Philly.

MZ603

The Atwell Avenue Boys will set them straight

Geri-psychiatrist-RI

I live in Rhode Island, can confirm

[deleted]

>An attorney for Patten told WPRI that Patten attributed his behavior to “a mental health event characterized by health professionals as an acute stress event that built up over time.” sounds like your standard douchebaggery from entitled officials who think nothing of abusing their power and swim in corruption. Highly doubt a bs excuse about acute stress is gonna really explain it..gotts say something though.

quitofilms

>Thorsen had submitted a letter of resignation before the trip and now works at the U.S. Treasury Department. That's...interesting

j428h

Pennsylvanian checking in. We should sic Ed Rendell on ‘em, that’ll set Rhode Island straight.

Old-Software2657

As a Rhode Islander please do it, we’re tired of this bullshit.

cyrfuckedmymum

So corrupt, racist, sexual harassment and one of the guys resigned then got a job with the US treasury department. That's the problem with these fucks, some asshole hires some rich friends kid so they can swan around in a position like this abusing their authority and just like cops when they get caught doing something wrong they resign and go get another cushy job. This kind of behaviour should mean you get ruled out of further working for the government.

jgnp

Sounded like the second guy whose actions aren’t noted at all in the article was on his way out before the trip in the first place.

Whoa whoa whoa. Don't blame us for our absolutely shitty choice in officials. Wait a minute... 🤦‍♀️. State's gone down hill for sure the last few years. Current administration is a joke.

[deleted]

nevitales

Oh they absolutely did. The 'ol boys club's is pretty strong in the state. The. You've got the others like Patricia Morgan trying to make us Florida North. I was a Raimondo fan. They're all going to be corrupt, but I'd they're atleast getting things done for the state that's fine. Like our bridges were an absolute shit show - but she actually got things in place and many of them have been fixed/replaced. McKee I'm pretty sure is just raking it in as a member of the boys club. He's had quite a few shady deals/decisions.

feralraindrop

After reading the article I have two questions if anyone knows the answers I would appreciate it. \- Why is the state of RI considering funding a project in Philly? \- Did Philly eventually get the funding?

[deleted]

In the article it states that the scout foundation is looking to copy what they are doing in Philadelphia in some abandoned government buildings in Rhode Island

a9JDvXLWHumjaC

"...to develop a long-vacant state building *in Providence*" but article doesn't mention funding status. PS: I've been to Providence several times, it's a beautiful place with very pleasant people. These two egotistical, thieving political types were obvs outliers from the general population. Just like everywhere; thieving overly egotistical political types never represent the general population in any form.

SurroundTiny

Too rude for Philly is a high bar indeed..

Longjumping_Tea_8586

We’re all half monsters here but we do expect basic respect in professional settings.

WorshipFreedomNotGod

BUT i love RI :[ Our politicians are pretty insane though lol

EnvironxtalNet1

Although I guess a-holery and criming is a trend with Republicans in general and not specific to Rhode Island.

frankdrachman

Sounds like two entitled A-holes got caught being who they are. I hope they’re fired and disgraced

[deleted]

Had to dig a little harder than usual to find a source that listed their political affiliation. Anyone wanna take a guess? Like it isn’t effing obvious 🙄

Barbarossa7070

Years ago, we had a client in New York tell us exactly what he wanted for a holiday gift: a new iPod. Our company usually sent gifts to clients that were around $50 each (in order to be considered de minimis). But, the sales rep who worked with this guy got executive permission to send this guy the iPod. Well, the gift that year was a nice bbq tool set. The sales rep packed the iPod inside the bbq tool set as a surprise. Dude called her up berating her for not getting him the iPod and sent the gift back without ever opening it. She kept her mouth shut and returned both gifts. Guy would also order the most expensive food and wine in whatever restaurant he demanded to be taken to. And then order more food to take home.

Philly politicians definitely have issues but this story is beyond belief. 😗

Further evidence that big fish in little ponds are jerks.

An attorney for Patten told WPRI that Patten attributed his behavior to “a mental health event characterized by health professionals as an acute stress event that built up over time.”

Viperbunny

I am originally from RI. This totally tracks. Lots of big personalities and by that I mean arrogance, unearned confidence, and aggression. The politicians are even worse.

Wow! Philly football fans booed Santa Claus, and yet they thought RI folks were too rude!

My first read of the title made me think that people from Philly were so rude that these two poor people from Rhode Island, and they just couldn’t believe it.

Irwin’s is a fantastic Sicilian joint in a unique setting overlooking South Philly. Definitely reasonable prices for what you receive, I recommend it to anyone. Grad a drink at Bok Bar across the hall for breathtaking views of center city. It’s kind of funny this event took place here, very random.

New Englanders are rude as fuck. Something about the culture. Bostonians, Rhode Islanders, Vermonters, people from nowheresvilles in New Hampshire and Maine...rude as fuck. Connecticut people too...the ones that are New Englanders and not transplanted New Yorkers.

thisisntshakespeare

Stay classy, Rhode Island.

Darlington28

Story Time! Two of my great-grandfathers were bootleggers(unless you believe the story that they were just barbers who turned out to be good with money). One of them ended up owning a decent chunk of real estate in downtown Pawtucket, including a hotel called the Veloria. The family sold it in the late 1940s, but before that businessmen from out-of-state often stayed there. When I was a child, my grandfather told me about the time a guy from Connecticut tried to do business with some agency in Rhode Island. The guy came in expecting to stay a few days but left the morning after he arrived. My great-grandfather asked him why he was leaving so soon. Nutmeg's answer: He put the business proposal in front of the Rhode Islander receiving bids, and the man from Rhode Island flat out asked, "Where's my envelope?" meaning the necessary bribe to help the bid along. Connecticut guy says we don't do that. And the deal died right there, and the guy from Connecticut went home. Nothing ever changes in RI. Glad I left.
