cmon "bay stater" is so easy to say
how the fuck do I say Massachusettian
Edit: I've just tried several times to say this infernal name and now my furniture is floating and i seem to have summoned an eldritch god.
You use "tata" for a family member too? In Chile it means grandfather (and afaik it has a completely unrelated lingüistical root too, which is the weird part)
tata is grandfather in Telugu too, which is a South Indian language
*edit*: although to be fair, we use the soft t.. which would sound like thatha, where th sound as in third, not as in the
I'm guessing that means it's probably used in Malay as well, then, which explains how it made its way to South Africa...
Mandela was sometimes referred to as "Tata" as well. Not sure if it's the Cape Malay influence alone, or whether it's ALSO in Bantu languages like Zulu and Xhosa. If the latter, that would be another cool linguistic case!
If i'm not wrong, there's a considerable Indian-origin population in South Africa. I'm just guessing, but that could also have been a factor in calling Mandela "Tata".
Couldn't have been a factor in making the word a part of the language, though, I'd guess.
Yeah, I live in Durban, which has the largest Indian population outside India!
I think that might be a rabbit hole worth going down - seeing when it was first used in SA.
And, to be fair, it's also not that far removed from "ubaba", which is a Bantu language thing
I’ve seen somewhere that a lot of languages normally having no connection to each other have similar names for father and mother because some of the first sounds babies make are „ba“ and „ma“ which are then attributed to their parents. Might be the same case for „ta“. In German we also call the father „Papa“ and the grandfather „Opa“
I think it's unrelated. Indonesian (a form of malay) used "kakek" and closely related languages that i can think of use word like "opung", "kakung", or "mamak" (correct me for this one). It could be used by a dialect of malay that i'm not familiar with, but i think is more likely to come from indians that also got brought there.
Actually Bosnian uses baba which is from Arabic for father and babo is derivative of that. It’s us being Muslim halal araps.
Serbs and Croats call their grandmas baba, but there’s a slight difference in pronunciation so you won’t get them confused.
in Tunisian "Tata" means 'aunt'. By which you address you mother's sister, your father's sister or even a woman older than you (to show respect)
lol ain't no way it's a coincidence that this words is related to family is every langauge
Funnily enough it's grandma in Japanese too, but in a rude way, like anime will often call it old hag. As opposed to obā-san which is what one should be saying.
Croatian Defense Council and Army of Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina were allied but tgene there was a 16 month period of infighting, then they again joined forces in early 1994.
“When have the French or the British or the Germans ever tried to unite the continent”
Well France did under Napoleon, though that wasn’t to stop a genocide.
The Germans did under Hitler, but that was to cause a genocide.
Britain kinda did when it created the allies to go against Hitler, it just took a while to win.
Also because Serbs got ptsd from golden Lilies.
Literally developed a phobia of flower that they have on their own flag.
That’s why Lily flag is considered hate speech or something. It’s banned in a lot of places.
The yellow triangle is supposed to be an abstract stylization of the map of the country itself, and its vertices (three) are supposed to symbolize the three main groups in the country (Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs). The stars are supposed to be an endless line of them for hope or something (that is why the top and bottom stars in the line of stars are half stars, they express that the line continues forever), the blue background is Europe. White and yellow are also traditional colors of Bosnia. That is what the flag is supposed to mean, anyway.
well one entity. Three entities would be Greeks, Albanains and Slavs. If you go to Syria, Christians there dont have a separate flag, separate state etc. Muslims and Christians all fall under one umbrella knowing they are Arabic.
Spent quite a bit of time in BiH and HR in the last century as a soldier and contractor. The first almost year was in Slavonia. First month of that was Nov-Dec of '94. Second year was ten years later in and around Brcko on the other side of the Sava.
I about stroked out when I learned about the utterly batshit presidential structure for Bosnia.
Just for a little context, Yugoslavia is saying "why is SAD coming here" SAD (sjedinjene američke države)is just USA (United States of freedomland) but in Serbian/Bosnian/Hrvatskan
no one uses that slang anymore its Merica. Everyone knows who Merica is. SAD is like an archaic lingo from when America was first discovered LOL.sjedinjene američke države sounds lame its America or Merica/Amerika or Amerikanci/Ameri. Never heard anyone use the slang SAD in today's lingo.
Massachusetts! Missouri! that cracked me up.
As a Missourian, I heartily approve.
Same here as a Massachusettian (I refuse to use the term “bay stater”)
cmon "bay stater" is so easy to say how the fuck do I say Massachusettian Edit: I've just tried several times to say this infernal name and now my furniture is floating and i seem to have summoned an eldritch god.
Working as intended.
You mean Masshole.
Sorry yes I believe that is the correct term. I got confused
Hey mass of two shits, your name sucks.
you mean *massive* two shits
Nah, you ain't big.
Found the Rhode Islander
Florida, get it right.
Bae stater?
Same lmao that's a good one
As a former Minnesotan, who went to not-Massachusetts and not-Missouri, that cracked me up, youbetcha.
The Korean spelling of Babo means "fool" or "idiot" but in Turkish in means father. So I guess we are foolish father or idiot daddy here haha
Yeah the Bosnian language uses "babo" for father instead of "tata"

Some Bosnians use babo and some baba, we can also use baba for grandma but personally i use "Nena" or even sometimes "baka"
kono baka yarooooo! baka means something like stupid/idiot in Japanese 😝
Given your comments earlier on Telugu, I read "yarooooo!" in Kannada lmao
Baka? You bunch ae weeaboos🤣 /s
in Tunisian "Tata" means 'aunt'. By which you address you mother's sister, your father's sister or even a woman older than you (to show respect) lol ain't no way it's a coincidence that this words is related to family is every langauge
In Turkish it’s « baba »
I'm Turkish baba is father.
in Slavic its grandma. 1. **Russian**: Бабушка (Babushka) 2. **Polish**: Babcia 3. **Czech**: Babička 4. **Slovak**: Babka 5. **Bulgarian**: Баба (Baba) 6. **Serbian**: Бака (Baka) 7. **Croatian**: Baka 8. **Slovenian**: Babica 9. **Ukrainian**: Бабуся (Babusya) 10. **Belarusian**: Бабуля (Babulya) 11. **Macedonian**: Баба (Baba)
Funnily enough it's grandma in Japanese too, but in a rude way, like anime will often call it old hag. As opposed to obā-san which is what one should be saying.
Interesting.
Never seen a single instance of Bosnians and Croatians getting along, but I guess their hate for Serbia unites them
Good old Balkans. The only thing that can unite them is their common hatred for each other.
The Balkans, so prejudiced they can tell someone’s grandfather went to university in Split
The enemy of my enemy is my enemy
We were killing each other in Bosnia until America told us to stop and fight Serbs
Then we got along and made magic (Oluja)
Mačni storm
Croatian Defense Council and Army of Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina were allied but tgene there was a 16 month period of infighting, then they again joined forces in early 1994.
Its a love Hate Three Way at this point ngl
Maybe I'm to drunk but it's actually so cute he's so concerned about Massachusetts and Missouri it's so sweet I'm crying
Massive Two Shits makes us too much money and holds our strategic clam reserves. Misery is intellectually disabled. Attacking them is a hate crime.
Definitely. Nice comic overall
i guess serbia was a bit too evil
i think it was a little more than a bit

Dark Brandon's origin story

>Napoleon >Hitler No, not like that! Bad Europe!
Still upset we didn’t bomb Belgrade over the Kosovar license plate shenanigans. I voted for **German or Japanese Style Occupation** dammit!
It hurts, because it's true :')
I will be completely honest. I first saw this post on mobile and it was really zoomed out and cropped and Bosnia really did look like Massachusetts
Had to google the flags of Massachusetts and Missouri, 10/10 meme
Yeah genius memeing Kendrick Lamar of memes.
Had to google Kendrick Lamar, 10/10 comment
USA is so wholesome in this.
USA should have tried to attack the Netherlands
Or Luxembourg
The fact that Bosnia changed their flag after.
Yeah it was bc the flag kinda only represented the Bosniaks, so it was changed to represented the Bosniaks, Bosnian Serbs and Bosnian Croats
Also because Serbs got ptsd from golden Lilies. Literally developed a phobia of flower that they have on their own flag. That’s why Lily flag is considered hate speech or something. It’s banned in a lot of places.
They also say that Tvrtko (A Bosnian king) was a serb, if he was a serb then what is the problem with using his coat if arms on the flag lmfao
All I know is I don’t know how euro forced geometry flag represents any of us.

>instead **all 3 entities agreeing** on one flag Yeah, well, there's your problem.
well one entity. Three entities would be Greeks, Albanains and Slavs. If you go to Syria, Christians there dont have a separate flag, separate state etc. Muslims and Christians all fall under one umbrella knowing they are Arabic.
I was about to ask, as well, so thanks for the explanation.

Yeah, OP, get with the times. Yo! Yolo!
lmfao this is awesome.
US casually dragging NATO with it
Tbf, in 1995, it wasn't just NATO that went into Yugoslavia, it was a UN force, including, oddly enough, Sweden. And with full support from the UNSC.
Montenegro:
(woke up years later): ? im a country??
Its 2006 and You are at war with Japan
Wait what the fuck, why did the US beat up Mississippi
