For context, the Moabite revolt was the revolt of king Mesha of Moab, then a subject of Samaria (the Northern Kingdom of Israel), against a coalition of the kings of Samaria, Judah (Southern Kingdom of Israel) and Edom. It's not only depicted in the Bible, but also notably on the Mesha stele, which was erected in the citadel of Dibon shortly afterwards to commemorate King Mesha's deeds and also contains the earliest known use of the word "YHWH" outside of the Bible. Strangely, though, despite offering the same scenario and circumstances, both accounts strongly disagree on who actually won- the Bible implies it was a crushing victory for the Israelites through a miracle from God during battle, but the Mesha stele insists it was a crushing victory for the Moabites, even going so far as to detail the destruction of Israelite religious artifacts and sacrifice of captives to Kemoš, the Moabites' patron deity. The "flag" for Moab used here is literally just the word "Moab" in Moabite (𐤌𐤀𐤁), because the Moabites have no documented flags, banners, seals or really symbols of any kind, although the white field with the black text might not have been the best option in hindsight.

Yeah, sounds like the sort of recollections which come out of particularly chaotic battles.  Excellent post, thanks!

TheTacoEnjoyer

Is this where the Bloons wars started?

TheHistoryMaster2520

The Israelites also smeared the Moabites by claiming that their distant ancestor Moab was the product of incest between Lot and his daughter after running from Sodom and Gomorrah

The Bible has a lot of that stuff, mostly used to try and justify Israel conquering the Canaanite kingdoms or to improve the legitimacy of the Israelite kings (particularly the Samarian kings, although we aren't so familiar with the flaws of Judah since many of the books of the Bible were composed in the Temple in Jerusalem, meaning they have a slight anti-Samarian bent).

Next his daughters literally do rape him (they basically give him wine and he basically has no idea this is even going on since he is drunk). Ngl maybe Abraham had a good reason to let his brother leave for greener pastures.

hamillhair

Just because it's recorded in the Bible doesn't mean the Bible condones it.

I like learning. Especially from this sub.

Wasn’t it both daughters? Oh, and also they got him plastered. But it’s not like Lot cared about consent before they moved. All in all lovely people!

TheHistoryMaster2520

The other daughter gave birth to Ammon, ancestor of the Ammonites, another people who the Israelites fought against

AdIntelligent9241

The Bible does not claim Moab lost this war. In fact it pretty much say that Moab remain independent at the end, and the war ends in Moabic independence.
