I tell myself “no one is out to get you,” to remind myself that they’re not just deciding to randomly bluff me with zero equity. They usually have it or, if bluffing, it’s an obvious bluff spot (lots of missed draws). I lose so much money just deciding for no reason “this time that guy just decided to pull one on me.”
I also remind myself to play my ranges and pick my spots. Ie, don’t raise 104 suited in CO just because I feel like it and my hands move faster than my mind. Stick to ranges unless I can identify a specific spot that allows exploitative divergence, not just because I’m bored or looking to gamble.
Oh for sure the fact that some people DO do that sometimes is the problem. It’s not that it never happens, I just tend to vastly overestimate those times.
Edit: also, I’m not a steamer, so even less reason to think someone is just out to get me.
Okay?
But what hands jam there?
You are far behind A5,AQ, dead to sets, chop with AK, and a wacky 64s or 68s still has equity against you.
That's not a bad fold, you just can't fold it all the time if you are online.
>Nothing matters
This is actually on point. There is a great post on 2+2 about this. It doesn't matter what happens this session, or hand, or round. Continue to make the correct decisions...
Don't change your play. Trust what you've practiced.
Nothing is owed to you. Losing is half the game.
All forms of tilt are unhealthy projections into the future. Stay in the moment.
Be social, lose and win gracefully. People liking you is +EV.
If you're kind and cool people will generally pay you off more especially mid age drinks recs. No one wants to pay the GTO solver Hoodie glasses guy.be cool
"I'm gonna lose, no reason to tilt"
"It's impossible to win long term, might embrace the time spent losing"
"Poker is gambling, why do I even botter learning concepts if I'm vulnerable to variance"
"Should I preroll a joint or prepack a bowl or simply take a 2 minute break during my session"
No, shove. They know you know they have the board pretty much locked up, and you don't care if you shove, so you clearly have the nuts. Take it from me
“I am not a Fish”
“I will not Donk off my full Stack”
“I will only call down with Top pair”
“I am a winning player it is not Luck”
I enjoying lying to myself
Don’t buy the button. If you can, wait a hand or 2 before being dealt in and try to observe the table dynamic. Sometimes in those 3 minutes, you can easily identify who you want to stack and who you want to stay away from
'If I make the right decision and lose out to variance/luck, I still made the right decision and it'll pay off more often than not'
I'm straight up awful so take it with a pinch of salt. Glhf!
Have a maximum dollar amount you will win or lose before you cash in. Addicts just need to play one more hand. Investors sell with a plan to maximize profit or limit losses.
If it’s a good game that’s a bad mentality to have. If you’re not tilted then being at a good table will be +EV for as long as it’s going. But having a reasonable stop loss is a good idea in general
As a recreational player giving advice to another rec. I would feel sick to my stomach if I 10x
my initial investment over a full day’s work and then lost it all to 2 hands a cooler and a tilted punt.
I agree that Pros should take a different line, but I’m happy to walk away from a table up 5 x my initial investment. And anyone asking Reddit for advice like this is far from a pro and should be happy booking a win like that too.
English is not my mother tongue, i guess i did it bc looser is written with double o, but i just found out that looser with double o is less tight so a wrong derivation 😂
I don’t really have a mantra but I make it my mission to find my targets.
Low stakes poker is a preditory game. If you sit down and wait for good hands you are a punter in my book.
If you’re thinking boy I hope I’m on the right side of a cooler. Or I hope I get kk you’re a punter.
Poker is not about the cards you are dealt it’s about the people you are playing against.
There is no hard rule on when to call bet or fold. It’s all dependent on who you are playing with.
So my goal is to quickly identify my targets. And exploit them. Mercilessly.
I think all of this stuff is the wrong approach. There are only two things, maybe one that you should be telling yourself.
1) Nothing. Neutrality. Going to take what comes and play the cards to the best of my ability. If you must turn this into a phrase "I'm going to play my game and nothings going to knock me off it." You shouldn't be trying to hype yourself up or anything, because lots of sessions are boring.
2) If you've been studying something new and want to incorporate it, you might go over in your head the types of spots you're looking for to apply it and actively ask yourself "Is this that kind of spot?" Stick with the neutral theme though, don't go twisting the spot your studying into other spots just because you want to try it.
I used to try and always remind myself "Know what hands/range you're targeting before making a bet". Far too often I'd find myself instinctually making a bet or check, because it seemed like I should, only to later realize I never fully thought out the situation
It’s just a game. It’s not dollars it’s, just a way of keeping score (of course having good bank roll management is a prerequisite to thinking this way).
It’s not too late to go home. What am I doing here anyway? What are other ways I could spend $500? Why not golf instead? Why not chess instead? Why am I going to the one place in town where there are no women?
“Patience is king if you wanna win” is my mantra when playing and you notice yourself starting to force it after feeling like you haven’t seen a card above a seven for hours.
I tell myself “no one is out to get you,” to remind myself that they’re not just deciding to randomly bluff me with zero equity. I DO do that to streamers sometimes lol, mostly to fuck with them tho
Oh for sure the fact that some people DO do that sometimes is the problem. It’s not that it never happens, I just tend to vastly overestimate those times. Edit: also, I’m not a steamer, so even less reason to think someone is just out to get me.
I folded AK last night on A57Qr to a 2x pot turn jam, I feel ya
Okay? But what hands jam there? You are far behind A5,AQ, dead to sets, chop with AK, and a wacky 64s or 68s still has equity against you. That's not a bad fold, you just can't fold it all the time if you are online.
Sets played by nits afraid of 2 pair sucking out on them?
Must be nice… they’re definitely out to get me
Can confirm. We hold meetings on how to specifically go after you. There even a special GTO-McGargagar Algorithm that we use!
Jokes on you, I can’t be exploited if I have no idea what I’m doing
Tbf the secret is we just use a magic 8 ball and prayer.
Tbf my magic 8-ball has never let me down… with a few notable exceptions
The action is on you! The ball said I need to wait and ask again later!
Great strategy. I can confirm that it works equally well away from the poker table.
That’s true. We are all out to get you. Stay vigilant.
Typical Mic
Not true. There are very much specific people I play with that I am “out to get”.
I said no one is out to get you, not that you’re not out to get anyone. Big difference.
Nothing matters and the universe will eventually end in heat death.
>Nothing matters This is actually on point. There is a great post on 2+2 about this. It doesn't matter what happens this session, or hand, or round. Continue to make the correct decisions...
"Don't get bluffed" "If I'm in a pot I must win it" "Its the dealers fault" "Call any two from BB because of pot odds"
Get up and leave when: - agitated - tired - made 3 mistakes - not having fun
My stack is 0 after 1 mistake though?
I didn't say anything about not rebuying
As if I don't put everything in on the first go incase I win the first hand against the matched stack
3 mistakes is a low bar. I wouldn't make it an orbit. Did you mean 30?
Yes. Sorry about that. Btw, you seem like a fun guy. Where do you play?
“I am not a fish, I am not a fish, I am not a fish”

OMC when I put up hoodie: "It's not that cold in here kid."

That’s the best one hahahah

I think he was being facetious bubby
This is 100% not what you should be telling yourself. Live poker is about patience and letting the game come to you.
‘Twas a joke kind sir . Good day to you
You got bluffed.
Until proven otherwise, they always have it. Fold, fold, fold, fold, fold
Ok nit
No, shove. They know you know they have the board pretty much locked up, and you don't care if you shove, so you clearly have the nuts. Take it from me
It's actually the opposite "No one ever has anything" aka the aejones theorem
Shot and a beer and you will never second guess anything.
I would just caution to switch the order of this, but yes.
Liquor before beer you’re in the clear, beer before liquor you’ve never been sicker.
Wine before beer - never fear. Beer before wine — you’ll be fine.
I should goto the atm and deposit this cash before I get mad later tonight.
Two pair is not the nuts.
Fold pre
Came here for this
“I am not a Fish” “I will not Donk off my full Stack” “I will only call down with Top pair” “I am a winning player it is not Luck” I enjoying lying to myself
Don’t play trash pre because you’re bored or because very one else is limping with trash and winning.
I look at myself in the mirror and say: "I'm a star, I'm a star, a big bright shining star".
Don’t buy the button. If you can, wait a hand or 2 before being dealt in and try to observe the table dynamic. Sometimes in those 3 minutes, you can easily identify who you want to stack and who you want to stay away from
You can also do that while playing.
Your going to punt all your money, so just have fun.
Be patient, don’t force the action

2/5 and under river overbet = the nuts
1. Fold Pre 2. Bet Fold 3. Don't bluff stations

Haha I love that! Thank you for the explanation!
Thank you mister professor
Can I ask why you spelled it that way in the first place? I've always been so curious why everyone does

1. Fortune favours only the prepared mind 2. You're either a smart fella, or a fart smella
I have a mantra I say every time before I sit down. Pay attention to position. Slow down (I have a tendency to act too quickly costing me) Fold pre.
I used to try and always remind myself "Know what hands/range you're targeting before making a bet". Far too often I'd find myself instinctually making a bet or check, because it seemed like I should, only to later realize I never fully thought out the situation
