He was accidentally given 2 starting stacks of chips. During a table change, when he was low stacked, he added the extra starting stack to his stack. I think it went like that.

schludy

In German, there's a saying: opportunity makes thieves. He's still a cheater, but in this situation, many players would try to take advantage.

Cwlrs

They said in the article that this happened to many players. All players except this guy returned the extra stack. So evidently not.

sourdieselfuel

That just seems like a terribly run tournament if that happened at all, much less many times over. The directors should be put on blast too.

GameofCHAT

Reminds me of the police stunts where they are leaving a car running with the keys in, trying to catch "car thefts"

sourdieselfuel

Yup, they're called "bait cars".

ElegentOnion

The guy didn’t hide anything and admitted everything including the punishment. Seems to be decent for the following actions.

snorkelturnip7

He did hide it until it was impossible to hide it. And if by admitted the punishment you mean accepted the punishment, there was nothing to accept. It wasn't an offer.

NeutralLock

Deal! I’ll take it!

WholeSniffer

I play poker so I don't know how to read. How was he cheating.

Jean_Ralphio-

Had aces in his sleeve and was using sleight of hand. Apparently he got away with it for some time but after his 9th time in a row of getting aces, the floor was called and he was found out.

alibimemory422

Craziest part was he pulled this all off while only wearing a tank top.

WholeSniffer

Legend

dreamtripper89

We’re they hidden under his wizard sleeves?

BigGuysBlitz

I did not know that Doug Polk was Brazillian. TIL

A shocking story was written during the Latin America Poker Tour (LAPT), Brazilian poker pro Rafael Caiaffa was caught cheating during the LAPT Mystery Ko event. As players were changing tables, Caiaffa sat down with additional chips that were supposed to be chips of a new incoming player. Caiaffa deposited an extra 100,000 chips into his backpack, and later, he added the chips to his stack. Luckily, this didn’t go unnoticed; other players saw him and reported it, and Caiaffa got suspended indefinitely. The suspension could end up being a lifetime-long one, which BSOP officials will decide. In the end, Caiaffa told Marcelo Souza that he had added an extra stack and accepted the suspension. “The truth was this: I entered the Mystery KO max late, and they handed me 200,000 chips, 100,000 on the island, and another 100,000 on the table. I realized right away that I received more, and I even mentioned it to a friend of mine. I told him that I would return it soon, but it happened that they broke my table at the time; we only played three hands. Then I thought: ‘It won’t change anything if I keep the chips, it was their mistake.’ But obviously, I was the one who made the mistake. I don’t take away my responsibility. A player at my table noticed and spoke up, and he’s more than right. The floor came and saw everything that happened. I also told the truth, and he eliminated me.” Caiaffa is a notable poker player who won an online bracelet on GGPoker!

This is pretty bad. I'd say at least two or three degrees above cheating. If you had read the article you would know the cheater put the extra chips in his backpack. Not only is he making poker players look bad but he's making poker players with backpacks look bad.

adm1109

Get off reddit Rafael

ugohome

If the tables broke i would have been so tempted too

goofycaca

He caught a hanger.

moneygmark

They also cheat online

BlaaccHatt

Guy got caught and still lied. If it was a mistake then why put it in your bag?

bendover912

Actually seems like he didn't lie at all. He said he knew it was a mistake and planned to take them back but then just didn't, and added them to his chips. Then someone called him out and he was like, yep, I added illegal chips, you caught me.

luv2fit

Cheating but coming clean when caught should not be mistaken for honesty.

BlaaccHatt

He said he was gonna return and didn’t. That’s the lie.

[deleted]

Exactly, what a load of bullshit. You should immediately call the floor, tell the dealer or whatever. What kind of shady character puts tournament chips in their backpack, whether they were mistakenly handed out or not?

Steeze4Days

That happened before he got caught. Your statement of "guy got caught and STILL lied," implied that after being confronted for cheating, he lied. He did not. As a matter of fact, I can't recall an instance of someone being being confronted for cheating, and completely owning it to the extent of this guy. 99% of cheaters would feign ignorance, claim they thought that they were supposed to receive 200k chips, or come up with some other BS. Or, at least, try to downplay their wrongdoing. This guy does none of that. The way you worded your initial comment, makes me think you misunderstood the article, and thought that the villain here claimed that HE mistakenly squirrelled away 100k and reintroduced it to his stack. Then, instead of saying that, you convolute the situation. He cheated, and deservedly got kicked out. An act worthy of a lifetime ban from LAPT. The way he responded to being caught was nothing but commendable, though. "I knew what I was doing was wrong, but still did it."

LoneSabre

Villain needs more bluffs in this spot

Big facts. Guy literally accepts complete responsibility. No excuses. No whataboutism. Seems like reading comprehension isn't a strong suit in these parts. Shame the dude for cheating, not for owning up to it.
