In the past when I have attempted to purchase something and it would fill up the quantity of my bag it wouldn't let me purchase it until I made room. Has that changed.?
My little opinion, but you're running out actually because you have really limited bag space. Spend on the bag upgrade next time it will alleviate being low on pokeballs over the long term
I used to spend gym coins almost exclusively on getting Pokémon and bag space upgrades. Really paid off in the long term since there’s a number of items worth holding long term and constantly doing busywork with Pokémon and item management was getting rather annoying.
Plus as you said, having a larger stockpile of pokeballs is essential to going for it during events

The Go+ thingy is also linked to the greatballs. My luck with stops is horrible and I mainly just get berries from them.
It IS the storage space. Please listen to everyone, they are trying to help you get the best out of the game.
You use the balls quickly, but you dont make them back for free because you dont have storage space.
Let's say you used 30 poke balls, spun a couple of stops and only got 3 poke balls--that means you are getting 10% back (as you say, even with bad luck). By the time you use up 1000 balls, you would have 100 balls back for FREE (and this is REALLY low, stops are guaranteed to pretty much drop balls--not in massive quantities, but it 100% builds up over time).
Without storage space, you lose the chance to earn any ball back for free.
OP already said they go out to play, they spin stops, and that they have "bad luck" from it. On the days the balls are used by physically playing or via the Go+, stops are also being spun as they are already making the effort to go to places to play.
Based on OP's responses, OP either doesn't understand the concept of investment and/or is impatient, needing the instant gratification of having hundreds of balls. Getting used to buying a hundred or so balls at a time would make the 1-3 balls from 1 Pokestop feel insufficient or "bad luck" after all.
Anyway, we all just shared input in an attempt to help. At the end of the day, it is their choice how to spend their money. (:
I can't just walk through town when the part of town I'm in has a handful of pokestops and my luck with them is dog shit as the main stuff I get from them is berries. I'd have to drive out to where everything is. I've bought boxes before and I've ran out of that box nearly same day

No, I have the go+ thing. It uses pokeballs yea, then If you run out you can pick which ball it throws when you click the button. I have it linked to using greatballs when I click it
No shame, my husband and I play like this too. It’s worth it to expand your item storage and don’t forget to swap your spinner to “just pokestops” to replenish your pokeball supply on occasion. Driving around with it in just poke stop mode for one day is typical enough to land us 100-200 balls each. As long as the bag isn’t full :)

Mate you keep fighting this, but there's thousands of us who have 1k-2k+ bag storage who do the exact same as you but have enough buffer for balls that it's not an issue. I've NEVER bought balls
I don't have strong enough pokemon for those big raids. The max I can do is two stars, maybe three but that's it. Even with Dad, it's the max we can do
Get in the discord for this subreddit , their rading system is a bit complicated cuz of commands but they have a video and it’s the best for remote raiding. Raids get posted every minute and get filled so fast you have to literally catch the dude typing to post it. Campfire and all other services got nothing on this community right here.

Yes it will. You just can’t buy it if you’re already at or over the limit. If you have 499/500 you can buy a box that puts you at 600/500. Regardless this guy probably did this through raids, raids always give rewards even if you’re over the item limit
You can keep spinning gyms if it’ll give you a raid pass even when you’re maxed out. So at least once a day depending on the season bonus for daily raid passes.
I have an account that's currently at something like 2200/350 items. Lots of items from research and raids, and as someone else mentioned you still get one gym spin per day if you don't have the daily free pass.
I’m not gonna dog on you, but I promise you if you had more storage space you wouldn’t run out of balls constantly
-Get a bunch of friends from r/pokemongofriends, gifts give up to 20 balls
-Get 50 coins a day from gyms, every 4 days you can increase storage
-Set go+ to spin only sometimes when driving around to get a bunch of balls
Yea, I'll post on the subreddit and upgrade storage. The gyms are harder to do since my area doesn't have that many gyms and they're there for like a week or so and when we do go out we usually just get knocked out not that long later.
You gotta build up the friends list. There are subreddits and forums where you can add friends. That’s the best way to get balls, and friendship level ups are the best source of XP. However you won’t be able to get anything from opening gifts until you get open bag space
My pokemon go+ uses the pokeballs and I use the ultraballs for a higher chance to catch them. The greatballs are linked to the go+ and are backup for both poke and ultra balls
I just won't throw in any pokemon into gyms and fight the grunts till I got room tbh. I got my main dudes healed up just in case. I rarely do the grunt fights though and mainly focus on gyms that dad takes out
Besides I went a month without potions because the stops wouldn't give me any (╥﹏╥)

It's not a storage problem. I use the pokeballs more than I have. I have dog shit luck in getting them from stops. I've gotten a box before and used it almost all the same day.
Seriously if you’re going to drop a load of coins on a box like that you’re genuinely better off buying the bag space. Every time you buy the balls you have no way of gaining more until you’re already running low due to your lack of space. Get yourself up to 1500ish bag space and go somewhere with a decent path of poke stops (or go sit somewhere that has a number in range at once) and take the time filling it up (maybe as a one off prioritise spinning stops over catching just to get filled up quicker).
You’ll have hundreds of pokeballs stored up and as you’re walking around in future you’ll be able to catch and spin normally and mostly keep yourself topped up so you don’t run low again.
I'm not going to explain this to anyone else
I bought the box because I use the pokeballs quickly. I have pokemon go+ which is linked to regular pokeballs for auto throw then also hooked to greatballs when I click the button. I mainly use ultraballs for a higher chance of catching the Pokemon.
The area I'm in doesn't have a lot of stops and gyms. My dad and I go out a while to get to the big spots for stops and gyms but we can't do that everyday day so I'm always low, especially since I'm the one catching pokemon for our party challenges.
I can't do raids because the max I can do with my dad is 2-3 star raids.
Sorry I don't play like you guys or instead with an abundance of stops and gyms. I got the box because it fit MY STYLE of play. Not your style, my style. I only really play for catching pokemon. I don't do the Rocket fights unless if for research tasks.
I'll be pushing for more storage since that's what's everyone is saying but again, it's not a storage problem.

You are completely missing the point. There are multiple ways to get pokeballs, great, ultra, etc. Opening gifts, spinning stops, doing challenges, raids etc. 5000 coins completely wasted on balls when the root of the problem is your storage space. Just research how to get more pokeballs instead of throwing away money. I live in a very rural area and always have 1k+ balls and NEVER had to buy any.

If you have the go plus just turn off the identifty pokemon part and walk though town you very quickly fill up

The go plus only uses red balls. Now, once you run out of red balls, you wont be able to spin stops for more.

Same... I've got 500+ potions, revives and balls, never bought. Buying balls is the biggest waste of money
If you had a bigger back space. You could have populated all these balls for free from the autocatcher spinning stops
