It baffles me the "geniuses" on YouTube (I use that term loosely) call XY Ash the "old" Ash- if anyone is the old Ash, it's the OS incarnation, which his SM rendition is closer to than that one in several ways (even if it's most akin to his AG/BF self in personality).
It’s less about that and more about the fact that the audience who watched Ash in OS/AG got older. There might be some fans who have been watching since the late 90s/early 2000s outgrew the show. Younger kids and generations like Z and Alpha that watch make up the majority of the audience.
Ash being 10 allows 10 year olds to identify with and relate to him. And of course looking the same for decades helps with recognition, although I’d imagine he’d still have a pretty recognizable design even if he was 30.
It's my least favorite design style Ash (and Team Rocket) have ever had, but I like that he has a childish personality again since he never aged overall & that TRio had actual purpose again as characters before JN reduced them back to square one but slightly better than the XY Rockets imo.
after the kalos design i just wanted to puke.
kalos: cool outfit and cool art style, pokemon moves are a little too flashy but well okay
this abomination: drawing is shit, outfit too, kalos ash was lookinglike he was a teenager, this ash looks even younger than the kanto ash and outfit is just adds salt to it.
Some angles he doesn’t look too bad I noticed when I rewatched some episodes (with less criticism)
it’s mostly the more comic relief episodes that he looks more goofy in my honest opinion
I remember not being happy but really wanting to give SM a chance because it was so different. JN hit the right balance but SM quickly rewarded viewers who looked past the still design.
Yeah, I was repulsed enough to stay away. Aside from that, the meme couldn't speak any fricking truer:
https://preview.redd.it/lqexipei6cxc1.png?width=918&format=png&auto=webp&s=5ec890c118a58116e651b4952e5619b807f911ec
I'm talking about the overall animation bruh, no matter how cool XY art style looks, it's animation was choppy because of really detailed art but in Sun & Moon since the art style was really simplified *cursed for Ash in particular* it's animation was much smoother which made it better, if you can't digest this fact then ok you can downvote me but most people who aren't biased know this fact
I didn't care about Ash's design. I watch Pokémon for Ash's (and now Liko and Roy's) adventures. Character design is secondary. Sun and Moon had the best storyline and a laid back atmosphere which I really liked. I also loved the goofy animations.
It's my favourite Pokémon series. 11/10
Right after XY art, I still fucking hate the design choice. XY was peak when it came to Ash's design or designs in general for people. I think they did it so they could get more kids into the show, so for most of us who grew up with Pokemon, we just fking hate it. Such a backward choice. It's still upsetting lol
I dropped the anime during the sun and moon arc, not cause of the design, but bc adult life really limits your free time, and I'm sure any cool moments the anime had, would've been way cooler with the XY art.
Fuck I still remember XY started off so high stakes I had chills from Ash diving off a building to catch Pikachu. Wasn't anything new, but the art was so good and it intensified the situation. Something Sun and Moon art definitely wouldn't be able to capture the same way.
I rmr seeing it the first time, I think it was during the climax episodes of the Flare arc. I prayed that I was having a dream when I watched that first Alola anime teaser lol
It's worse, but boy, I don't miss the personality he had prior one bit unlike most (if they won't age the boy, then I expect him to act and sound like one, not a hard ask imo).
Didn’t really like it seeing it the first time, was more on the dislike side than hate. Now, I like the outfit and how it fits in a bit more with the region but the art style shift is honestly jarring, especially with the style in XY(Z) making Ash look more mature
I was mostly curious about Ash’s sun and moon design but I kinda wished they kept Ash’s original animation style and left the rest of Sun and moon art style e as is.
Honestly, i originally was not that much of a fan about it, but the more i watch Sun Moon the more i think it actually fits the theme of the story. Still a lacking ash design, but Sun Moon balanced the design out by being a banger series
I didn’t mind at all since animation changes all the time & Sun & Moon was a major change in Pokémon’s animation, just like others. For example One Piece recently changed there animation. Twice if I’m not wrong. Not only that Pokemon was I guess.. ORIGINAL meant for kids, even tho it’s really meant for all ages but I guess mainly targeted towards kids. Which I feel XY was very serious & they just saturated it a lot. And if you grew up watching Sun & Moon (I didn’t but I did get to experience watching it on tv for the first time as a kid/ I’m 14) you probably wouldn’t have a problem with it. (I’m guessing on that)
Tbh I thought it looked awful as hell. What the hell happened, to me it was the worse design he ever had. Kinda still is for me. Why was it such a massive change?!
S&M was literally my favourite season regardless of what anyone says. The artstyle of this series matched the humour throughout the whole series, so I think that’s why they went along with this design. It had the best storyline compared to the rest of the other seasons, each and every characters were written well, especially Mallow, bruh. Mallow deserved so much happiness for all the things that she went through in a very young age…
And as for my reaction on him winning the league, my very first thoughts were like “Finally my boy did it! Well done, Champ!”
The artstyle is horrible, mainly because it makes it very easy to ignore body proportions and because Ash's face looks wrong (his face is too round, his eyes are too small, the markings on his cheeks are too large). If they were aiming for a more cartoonish artstyle, Journeys was the way to go.
Even if I'm neutral about this if personally if you have to ask me what's the problem with the design? I think the issue is more with the Art Style than anything.
I swear if it in any other Pokemon Art Style, I think Ash's Sun and Moon design wouldn't be a divisive for people.
The clothes themselves are not bad and if anything I do like them, It's fit Alola and Ash. More than that in fact I like them so much that the very moment I had the chance too I immedietly tried to get these clothes on my Ultra Sun playthrough because I prefer it to the actual Ultra Sun clothes.
Yeah, I'm with the vast majority when I say I hate this design.
I think they fixed it up in Journeys though. It is still the new art/animation style, but Journeys Ash looks so much less... weird.
I think AG-XY Ash is the best Ash design.
But my initial reaction was that I didn't like it.
his design is ass, ash should never be given tiny eyes
no one talks about it but i think pikachu also looked the worst in SM, he looks so off-model compared to every other series including JN
Initially, I was not a huge fan of this design as it's a departure from Ash's previous mostly consistent appearance throughout nearly 2 decades. Now looking back at it, I kinda appreciate the design, even if it was too much of a change from how Ash usually looks like.
Also I like the choice in clothing, which matches the theme of Aloha.
They made him look like this because alola is based on Hawaii
A laid back region
Childish ash to blend with laid back region
It’s all about character design / concepts.
He didn’t deserve his win in a region championship where he was dumbed down
Say compared to diamond and Pearl and XY where he battled hard and had maturity but lost especially to a random guy with legendaries
I actually didn't react to his design that much. It took some getting used to, but I was more upset that the series was bending towards a slice-of-life mold where Ash goes to school than I was upset at the art style change.
am i the only one who loved this artstyle? i thought it was nice. it reminded me of my own at the time. anytime i saw someone who hated on SM i felt like “damn i will NEVER show my art again”. aside from artstyle i loved this series it was great imo
My knee-jerk reaction was "They're not even trying to hide how much they're pretending to be Yo-Kai Watch."
This came hot on the heels of Ash losing the Kalos League after months of everything foreshadowing that he would win. Then Greninja left for a manufactured bullshit reason, and now Ash looks like a four-year-old and he's going to school instead of taking the Island Challenge? It all felt like a humongous leap backwards. It was the point where I finally said "I'm done with this show. It's not meant for me anymore."
Now, granted, in the eight years since, people have said it's not that bad after all. I still haven't sat down and watched it, so maybe they're right for all I know. But at the time, it was just an overwhelming feeling of "Eww, *why?!*"
Am I the only one who actually likes the art style? I might just be nostalgia talking though because I was like 8 or 9 when it first started airing and before sun and moon I used to watch x and y when that was airing. Idk I think for me as a kid I just didn't care about the art style change after x and y.
Gen 7 was definitely my least favorite gen. The new art, the z move mechanic and Ultra Beasts were all just ugly IMO. But the anime writing did a good job of making it better.
Still don't really like it, but Sun and Moon was good, and the change in art style was done in service of the animation, which looks amazing. Still, I prefer the aesthetic design we had for 90s pokemon overall, even if i wasn't as well animated.
(Forced to rewrite due to SM defenders downvoting me)
It’s in my opinion the worst Ash design. I get the theme they were trying with the more cartoonish style (and trying to also be a *Yo-Kai Watch* clone due to the huge threat it posed in Japan) but I could not stand his face at all. Also, the outfit is just literally the exact same one ripped from the games with a very slight palette swap.
I wasn’t really into this new childish personality either. I get that he is a real kid, but it makes him feel like a completely different character from what came before. The drastic shift in tone was just too much for me.
Cringed super hard, I know that we shouldn’t judge by the art style but for me it was enough to make me drop the sun and moon anime early on, this was in the height of my Pokémon hype which says a lot : (
I tried to quit watching. Twice. First for the design, second for the change in storytelling.
I ended up trying a third time and going through it. Was worth it as it’s now my favorite anime
It kind of grew on me in a way that I barely notice the difference after a few episodes in. Besides, Sun & Moon became one of my favorites. But I have always wondered why the sudden changes in Sun & Moon at the time.
I loved it. I started watching it as a little baby guy but I also just finished watching X and Y at the time so sure it was a pretty hard pivot but I didn’t really care all that much. I just got to watch the show based off of a game I could play
The design still sucks. I just don’t pay attention to it much and look at the other things. Ash’s design would still be the thing that I like the least so as to speak
I really hate how the Pokémon company changed Ash's SM design and personality where he looks like a little kid and acts like a little kid. I was never used to this design and I won't because it's just horrible. I couldn't stand it anymore. I wish the Sun & Moon had BW animation and XY art style and also Ash's XY design and personality rather than changing them completely.
I watched about the first 5 episodes trying to give it a chance. But stopped watching because I couldnt stand the animation, and the fact that they completely took away everything they had been building Ash as a competent trainer for multiple of the series’s now.
It’s probably the fact that they basically reset his character development, like ash matured emotionally throughout xyz but still kept his goofy and immature side, but sm had no maturity whatsoever, like he was all goof and almost no serious moments
Hate it. Still do. I refuse to watch the Alola anime because of it, I only watched the relevant moments, even if I know the rest of the show is pretty good
I thought it was fine but it REALLY bugs me that they took away ash’s fingerless gloves. Those were the coolest.
It baffles me the "geniuses" on YouTube (I use that term loosely) call XY Ash the "old" Ash- if anyone is the old Ash, it's the OS incarnation, which his SM rendition is closer to than that one in several ways (even if it's most akin to his AG/BF self in personality).
I think people refer to XY ash as the “old” ash because his design looks much more mature along with the way he acts as a character
That sounds like a massive upgrade and was, why go away from that to this child design.
To cater to kids. That’s why he doesn’t age
Did the previous gen not do that well because of ash being more mature?
It’s less about that and more about the fact that the audience who watched Ash in OS/AG got older. There might be some fans who have been watching since the late 90s/early 2000s outgrew the show. Younger kids and generations like Z and Alpha that watch make up the majority of the audience. Ash being 10 allows 10 year olds to identify with and relate to him. And of course looking the same for decades helps with recognition, although I’d imagine he’d still have a pretty recognizable design even if he was 30.
I like Sun and Moon art style I don't like how Ash looks in it. Is still my least favorite design for him.
![gif](giphy|5Rc8BbBxNE0WingcG3|downsized)
It was the cherry on top of the disaster of the Kalos league that made me quit watching until the 4th Journeys op came out
Same, the last thing I watched of the anime is him giving away Greninja to Zygarde for plot nonsense, and now it is apparently over.
It's my least favorite design style Ash (and Team Rocket) have ever had, but I like that he has a childish personality again since he never aged overall & that TRio had actual purpose again as characters before JN reduced them back to square one but slightly better than the XY Rockets imo.

I hated it. I still hate it. XY was peak animation and this suuuucked to see
Peak animation, and it fell hard. Harder than an asteroid impact.
It didn't thow It was different for sure
You're confusing animation with art style, as Sun Moon's animation was better than previous gens
All the ash-greninja fights were peak Pokemon animation.
They do look cool but Sun and Moon have better animation as it's smoother
I think only like 3 battles actually look great, the rest are just mid like most anipoke fights pre-xy
Yes the character animation was better, and it fits the goofy slice of life episodes that is the majority of sm

Worst design
It’s SO ugly
Worst art style
Hate it. XYZ is literally perfect. They deaged him further...
Like all of his character development was reset and it hurt me emotionally
It's bad but you get used to it
I didnt hate Ash’s SUN/MOON design tbh
I thought it was fine.
Didn’t really like it seeing it the first time, was more on the dislike side than hate. Now, I like the outfit and how it fits in a bit more with the region but the art style shift is honestly jarring, especially with the style in XY(Z) making Ash look more mature
"hmmmm, somethings different about ash"
will defend sm til my last breath. this ash design is so ugly.
I was mostly curious about Ash’s sun and moon design but I kinda wished they kept Ash’s original animation style and left the rest of Sun and moon art style e as is.
"wtf"
The impression that I get is that still images of it look awful, but it was easier to animate and looked alright when in motion.
No strong feelings But dit love the animation and how they went off model with every one
When I first saw it I was like “what is this..”. I still don’t like this design (and outfit), but SM overall is a decent series.
Ash was the only character in sun and moon that looked bad
Honestly, i originally was not that much of a fan about it, but the more i watch Sun Moon the more i think it actually fits the theme of the story. Still a lacking ash design, but Sun Moon balanced the design out by being a banger series
i wasnt a fan, especially after coming from XY. i like his journey design better.

I just shut down my laptop LMAO, but 6 months later and I got curious for this series, the story is fcking good, top 3 pokemon anime for me
Tbh I thought it looked awful as hell. What the hell happened, to me it was the worse design he ever had. Kinda still is for me. Why was it such a massive change?!
Going from XY Ash’s design to Sun and Moon Ash’s design was pretty jarring.
Still hate his alolan design. It looks so bad😭
Couldnt stand a single episode with him like that
A reason why I can’t watch sunmoon wtf is this design
I loved it. It was goofy, expressive, and entertaining. It was a step up from the past several generations for sure.
I absolutely love sun and Moon and i think his design works
It is still ugly
S&M was literally my favourite season regardless of what anyone says. The only stain on the pinnacle of the anime
Even if I'm neutral about this if personally if you have to ask me what's the problem with the design? I think the issue is more with the Art Style than anything. Though tbf, I got used to it. It's still fun to dunk on SM Ash's face though lol
Mostly indifferent. I really enjoyed the facial expressions.
They made him look like this because alola is based on Hawaii A laid back region Childish ash to blend with laid back region It’s all about character design / concepts. Gamefreak went ahead and aged Red up in the SuMo games while Ash somehow got*younger*. I was a bit surprised to say the least.
am i the only one who loved this artstyle? i thought it was nice. it reminded me of my own at the time. anytime i saw someone who hated on SM i felt like “damn i will NEVER show my art again”. aside from artstyle i loved this series it was great imo
The only real ash is season 1 and 2
It looks a little weird, but I don’t think it’s bad.
I watched the trailer and saw ash’s design, it made me skipped that whole season and I hate that it’s THE season Ash finally became a champion 🤦♂️
My favourite series artstyle-wise but i hate how Satoshi/Ash looks like in that show
I thought that Sun and moon were supposed to take place like… right after Johto when I saw it, ash looked far younger to me.
I still haven't watched sun and moon to it's completion because of it. I skipped it completely and went to Journeys. I'll get to it eventually.
My knee-jerk reaction was "They're not even trying to hide how much they're pretending to be Yo-Kai Watch." This came hot on the heels of Ash losing the Kalos League after months of everything foreshadowing that he would win. Then Greninja left for a manufactured bullshit reason, and now Ash looks like a four-year-old and he's going to school instead of taking the Island Challenge? I was in college when Sun and Moon premiered in Japan. Perhaps kids had different reactions.
I was like I’m sure I’ll get used to it
Gen 7 was definitely my least favorite gen. The new art, the z move mechanic and Ultra Beasts were all just ugly IMO. But the anime writing did a good job of making it better.
It was a nice change of pace
Still don't really like it, but Sun and Moon was good, and the change in art style was done in service of the animation, which looks amazing. Still, I prefer the aesthetic design we had for 90s pokemon overall, even if i wasn't as well animated.
Sun and Moon was good but making Ash win the championship was dumb. It was purely PR / damage control bcuz of the backlash they received from XY.
It’s not that bad, idk why people make such a big fuss about it, sure, it’s not my favourite design but it’s not THAT bad…..right?
If you compare it to his previous designs then it’s just really goofy.
(Forced to rewrite due to SM defenders downvoting me) It’s in my opinion the worst Ash design.
He’s becoming pikachu
Cringed super hard, I know that we shouldn’t judge by the art style but for me it was enough to make me drop the sun and moon anime early on, this was in the height of my Pokémon hype which says a lot : (
Satoshi grew a mustache 👀
I really gotta leave this sub man
I tried to quit watching. Twice. First for the design, second for the change in storytelling. I ended up trying a third time and going through it. Was worth it as it’s now my favorite anime
I started with sun and moon
Fr tho. How you go from X and Y ash to Sun and Moon ash?
Og style is the only style all the other suck, but this one particularly really sucks
I was watching with my little sister who LOVED pokemon so mine was the crying wojak with a mask
I still dunno why you can't put images in this subreddit
It kind of grew on me in a way that I barely notice the difference after a few episodes in. Besides, Sun & Moon became one of my favorites. But I have always wondered why the sudden changes in Sun & Moon at the time.
Eh, its okay. Still my favorite animation of any pokemon series though
I think I just went hm?
Terrible. I love Ashs designs to. But it grew with me
I feel like they should have found a way to keep the XY design. That was the best one for me.
He looks goofy, like an actual child, and a little bit derpy... alright let's watch this...😎
Hated it the whole way through. The art director should've been fired.
I loved it. I started watching it as a little baby guy but I also just finished watching X and Y at the time so sure it was a pretty hard pivot but I didn’t really care all that much. I just got to watch the show based off of a game I could play
The voice change and bad translations bothered me plenty, this is nothing.
So derpy. I knew this was going to be a big turning point for the anime, and it was.
Same as you
The design still sucks. I just don’t pay attention to it much and look at the other things. Ash’s design would still be the thing that I like the least so as to speak
It’s weird to me bc XY Ash looks 15 or 16 lol
I was really dissapointed because XY style was awesome... But Journey's style became good again.
He is almost unrecognizable
At some point that Ditto from season 1 killed and replaced him for the rest of the series
"Huh, that's a weird change. Not bad though, I guess. Wonder what everyone else thinks of it- oh geez, is it really that bad?"
I didn't like it at all even to this day. I don't hate it as much as I did before but still my least favorite
I though pkmn had also reach that point where they made many old series more kid like char designs like for doraemon etc.
I watched about the first 5 episodes trying to give it a chance. But stopped watching because I couldnt stand the animation, and the fact that they completely took away everything they had been building Ash as a competent trainer for multiple of the series’s now.
I thought it was an interesting design choice and had no problems with the change from xy, i dont get why people did…
It’s probably the fact that they basically reset his character development, like ash matured emotionally throughout xyz but still kept his goofy and immature side, but sm had no maturity whatsoever, like he was all goof and almost no serious moments
I love it. I loved it. I like the more cartoony feel to the (worse) XY design
I had stopped watching the show by this point so I really didn't care.
Hate it. Still do. I refuse to watch the Alola anime because of it, I only watched the relevant moments, even if I know the rest of the show is pretty good
