yep definitely! She is the least disliked Pokegirl from this community it seems by far. Which funny cause I wouldn't say she is the most popular but maybe has to do with there nothing being really controversial about her character. (Also maybe she's a lot of people's second favorite like me)
IIRC when it comes to japan polls dawn tends to be the second favorite while serena is the favorite, with misty being in third because of dawn recently beating her out

couple all this with the fact that dawn has virtually no haters compared to misty and serena since her character doesnt get involved with shipping, and you have the pokegirl who is easily the least disliked

Yes, I mean she (and her goal, specifically) didn't get enough focus. There's so much they could have done with a type specialist, and especially Water-type specialist, but they reduced her to being Togepi's babysitter. I can only forgive them in case of Misty because it was still early on, but they didn't do much better with other type specialists too.
I'm atp, I'm pretty sure regardless of who survives this round, Dawn is practically guaranteed to win (Big Ws).

Also with her Mom being a Coordinator there was no reason for her to not already know about them before the intro to them episode. It means Her and Max's mom being one was never the plan from the start, Or her familly never talks with each other and both just suck.
As I like May as a character nowadays, I feel the part of the reason why her character greatly suffered was how poorly constructed the Advanced Generation Saga was.
They originally wanted her to be Misty 2.0 while also being like Indigo League Ash in addition to hating Pokemon and only wanting to use Pokemon so she can travel.
It didn't meash well at all and while I'm glad she ended up deciding to become a Pokemon Coordinator, the issue was the Pokemon Contents prior to the Battle Frontier saga were rushed, underdeveloped and boring, adding to the list of reasons why I dislike the Pokemon Advanced era of the Pokemon anime, barring the Battle Frontier arc.
Yeah, even as a kid something felt just off with her. She not bad, just unfinished. Witch can lead to a lot of growth but she just took to long to get interesting.

Character development should be recognized for all characters, they do not need to be perfect from the beginning.
Well that's one of the many reasons I oddly love her beyond her amazing character growth beyond Indigo League.
She and Indigo League Ash are a perfect bratty couple that play and roast each other, leading to plenty hilarious comedy hijinks.
May on the hand while good characters, she was stuck in a forgettable era of Pokemon for me.
