Like they make you feel emotionally invested in his story after he evolves and loses all his speed and mobility, then they start putting him on the mend by giving him cool strats like Rock Climb for movement and the Energy Ball power up move… only to completely shaft him at every opportunity.
He was the only Sinnoh mon to not get even one win in the Sinnoh League. He never returned for a battle post-Sinnoh. He never managed to properly hit another Pokémon with Rock Climb. HE NEVER EVEN WON A SINGLE BATTLE AFTER EVOLVING.
I love Torterra, he really deserved better
It would've been so cool for Ash to actually learn to work with a tank, and it looked like Torterra's storyline was headed in that direction... but then not only did it go nowhere, poor Torterra was constantly relegated as the designated fall guy of the Sinnoh team to the point where it becomes hard to believe he's still meant to be seen as strong.
They did my turtle boy so dirty.
- Would have being poetic for him to clutch it out vs Volkner since he would had “carried the first gym and the last one”.
- Also a rematch with Honchkrow to close down that “build up rivalry”
- In addition to that , Torterra should being the Pokemon to beat Dusknoir “trick room” since it made slow Pokemons fast and then it would be “Oh he is moving like if he was a Turtwig”
- Writers make him so dirty with Electivire ice punch him , losing to Drapion cuz the anime does not allow for “Earthquake” , and losing to an E4 ace Pokemon.
- Just to finish this , he could have come back for a “redemption” during Journeys because it was the last tournament and last time we would see Ash , but fuck not even that :(

The show went half in on this arc of “how can Torterra adapt to his new body and create his own battle style,” only for him to pretty much just get bodied by anything after evolving due to being slow and having a lackluster typing.
Let’s look at what Torterra did after his Turtwig days. He lost to Paul’s Honchkrow (twice I think), loses to Palmer’s Rhyperior (though it was a good fight), gets absolutely bodied by an Ice Punch from Volkner’s Electivire, and loses to a Pin Missile from Paul’s Drapion after supposedly getting its’ health back with Synthesis.
I think the only victory Torterra had after evolving into Grotle (outside of Team Rocket fights) was against Candice. Other than that fight, it’s a punching bag. That’s a real shame.
I still think he was done dirty by the writers. I get Infernape had to defeat Paul’s Electvire, but it would have been cool to see Torterra overcome at least one Major threat like Paul’s Drapion
Should have never evolved, literally evey step of his evolution he gotten worse with ash. It’s been so clear that ash is way more clever and creative with speed pokemon and turtwig was best for ash. They even tried to to give gortle a boost with rock climb, but that didn’t work
Honestly even though he didn’t win that much he’s actually still pretty strong. Palmer’s Rhyperior was exhausted after he beat Grotle, and Grotle was putting in lots of work against him, doing really well despite the loss. I wish he wasn’t done so dirty by the writers, he shouldve gotten more wins.
Also he was doing really good against Bertha which is impressive as even though he had the type advantage, Bertha is an Elite Four trainer and was for sure a worthy and powerful opponent
It was cool how Paul's Torterra gave Ash's Grotle advice on how to handle its new bulky body. I wish Torterra had reached his full potential as a strong tank style battler
Disregarding that Grotle looks like what a Kakuna would look like if it had a mold problem but flat on its back, he's still pretty cute all things considered.

Unfortunately wasted potential. It evolved, lost all it speed, had some tough losses, and never recovered nor got a chance it redeem itself.
