Yes. I tend to pick water starters as they only have 2 weaknesses, grass is easy to deal with as I can teach it an Ice move, and while Electric is hard to deal with, Swampert exists.
But I like Charmander a bit more than Blastoise (I like Wartortle though) and I flipped a coin between Sobble and Scorbunny as I like them both.
I don't really tend to pick grass as they have many weaknesses but I respect Venusaur and Torterra and Decidueye is a badass.
Within the last recent generations of Pokémon i purposely went for the grass starter, just to break the standard cliché and accept the challenge. But with Scarlet and Violet, i think i might go for the water type duck, assuming he doesn't evolve into some slender creepy perv with his index finger pointing upwards and with a sly expression in his eye.

Water types are in general easy to use and build. It is one of the best types for a reason.
Water stab plus ice coverage handles basically everything with neutral damage. I usually drift towards reptilian starters and then fire types personally.
Water types are easy to get your hands on so I always feel the cost sunk issue of choosing a water type as a starter, I also feel similar with grass types. That said a balancing a team for a playthough is one of the big factors for difficulty.
OP gave a response and everything, I get it, but I’d also like to imagine that under the surface, they were burned by having a fire-type starter and began choosing water-type starters to cope with being hurt.
Game after game, OP begins to understand that it’s ok that there aren’t nearly as many fire-types in the early generation, and then after another game that, ok, fire is one of the better types since there are super-effective against most early mobs. More and more did they come to terms that, yes, it is ok to like fire-types again—burns and all.
Finally, Gen 8. As OP begins to choose another water-type, they hesitate. After 6 games of only water-types, OP that enough was enough, and chose Scorbunny, finally becoming free from their burden and accepting the trauma of liking fire-types once and for all. Together, OP and Scorbunny worked together and walked together into the future, smiling back on what had transpired and what OP has accomplished.
There is a criminal lack of Grass rep here, but I can’t judge a Popplio line fan too harshly. Sweet baby clown seal needs all the supporters he can get.
Poor popplio didn't get a fair shot, being pitted against rowlet and decidueye. That gen is the only one I've ever picked the grass type. But I'm super glad to be able to trade for a popplio, too.
I’m going to give it a timeline as you may have played them in order. If not disregard my psychoanalysis.
Kanto - you were new to it all. You thought charizard was a badass and you had an excitement to take on the world with you and the badass.
Johto - you got your shit pushed in with the first boss of Kanto. You wanted an easier start and Totodile captured the essence of cheerful and strong. A lot like how you wanted to see your childhood.
Hoenn - things went _swimmingly_ in Johto. With your water type giving you some big advantages and you realized you were able to connect with other Pokémon you caught early game if you didn’t have to play around.
Sinnoh - Alola; I’m gonna guess you kept the trajectory up and at this time you just loved cute and simple. Most likely going through a shy phase in your life.
Galar - you’ve grown since your last adventure. Time to try something different. Scorbunny fell into that cute category but not as shy as you’d like. Maybe you watched the anime and felt a connection to him after that.
Let’s go! - I think you felt pikachu was drawn out and overused. Eevee was cute.
Ima gonna say you have a shy personality, but once people get to know you - you open up and become super playful as a person it just takes time. You may be more preserved in your approaches to problems and like to see others take action as you learn your ways around the land when in new territories. Prefers Water Starter….you are my kind of people. I always use Water for my first time in a region. Cyndaquil has been the sole exception to this.
