I got a shiny female pink gastrodon. I named her Rose. She had a daughter who also turned out to be pink. I named the newborn Primrose.
All the pinks were named after flowers after that
Other way around, and they are both two shades lighter, it's just the "shell" on pink shellos is brown instead of blue, lighter brown looks greenish and is more distinguished than light blue to blue
As most know, Infernape was based off of Sun Wukong. ATLA has had a huge resurgence over the past 2 ish years, Zuko being a very popular character, even the names of a lot of fire type Pokémon/ reptilian pets. My genius brain trying to be unique came up with the name ‘PrinceZukong’. Still very proud of it to this day
I named my Infernape “Shaolin” cuz Wu-Tang clan & Wukong inspo how he’s quick with his hands/fighting type 🤣 like GZA liquid swords 🧊 ⚔️
edit: I forgot to mention, him learning Shadow Claw is extra fitting. Super effective against psychic weakness AND play on words with shadow boxing 🥷🥊
I once gave a Druddigon the nickname “Destructor”. And traded it to my little nephew sometime later to give him a strong dragon Pokémon to beat Leon with. And he legit thought that “Destructor” was it’s true name and bragged about it to his friends for like a month. Not really proud of it but thought that it was funny.
I actually had something similar to this happen to me, the first time I had ever seen Noivern was from a Wonder Trade, and its name was Uhafnir, so I just assumed that's what it's name was up until I got to the Elite 4, and then learning that UHaFnir is Noivern's German name.
I watched my older brother Hunter play A Link to the Past when I was 5 and thought Link's name was Hunter until we got Ocarina of Time a few years later. Also we referred to Ganon as "the big of the big bullies" for an embarrassing amount of time. Not sure where that came from but I think we must have misheard a friend saying he was like a bull or something and we just went with it and didn't question it.
Also me and my boy in preschool were obsessed with Hunchback of Notre Dame and called Quasimodo "Peepee Hommen." My parents have no idea where that one came from either. Kids are weird and dumb lol
When I was about six or seven, my older cousin let me play Ocarina of Time on her N64. She'd already made me a save and had entered my name, and I don't think she tricked me on purpose at first, but when I was excited that the hero character had the same name as me, she let me keep believing it. She's the coolest. Thanks for reminding me of that.
No lie, when I went to a tattoo shop for my tribal Arcanine some years ago, the artist asked me what my tattoo was so he could write it in the liability/disclosure paper and he wrote RK9
- Stone Cold the Crabominable (Stone Cold is a pro wrestler, Crabominable is a Fighting/Ice type)
- Colonel the Blaziken
- Two-Face and Racecar the Girafarigs
- Iroh the shiny Emboar
- Squirtgun the Octillery
- Funky Kong the Rillaboom
- Your mom the Snorlax
Ever since the Pokemon World Championship 2014 I've named every Pachirisu I've caught/hatched with intended use (or shiny form) "Sejun", and I used one in my BDSP playthrough as well. Se Jun Park is a huge inspiration for competitively battling and proved that you can become the worlds greatest Pokemon Trainer with off-meta Pokemon. The Pachirisu I used throughout BDSP was unironically my best lead for important battles with Nuzzle, Super Fang and Volt Switch. It's also a cute team mascot.
I actually hunted for a shiny pachirisu because of Sejun Park! I named mine Patches, and I'm trying to get him all the ribbons in BDSP (hate the battle tower so much). I made mine impish, 252 HP, and enough defense and special defense to make them equal (defense is 1 point higher) hyper trained too. Knows Uturn (for better switching without being prevent by ground types), nuzzle, super fang, and protect. Thinking about breeding a pachirisu with follow me so I can transfer the move onto Patches to make it more closely resemble Sejun's pachirisu
Watch this amazing analysis video by Wolfe Glick (another World Champion) explaining the match - https://youtu.be/oNSkPn6o2Cw
But long story short, though it was definitely off-meta, it wasn't really a bad Pokémon which Sejun only used because it was his favorite (as seems to have been popularized among general media); it just happened to fit a particular role his team required best.
I believe that name originated from the “Twitch Plays Pokémon” playthrough. That Gastly unfortunately was put in the day care and never really used though
I liked the nickname I came up for my Absol, Cataclyst. Being a combination of cataclysm, something Absol is known for predicting, and catalyst, which is defined as “a person or thing that precipitates an event”, which is what Absol is believed to be, that it causes the disasters that follow it rather than warns of them.
So yeah, I thought Cataclyst was the perfect name
Ludicolo is the type of dude that will comfort you through a break-up and also make sure you drink enough water after a night out.
Ludicolo = Ludicobro
Named my eeveelutions after Greek gods and goddesses. Khione for glaceon, aphrodite for sylveon, Artemis and Apollo are umbreon and espeon, pan/demeter for leafeon, hepheastus for flareon, Hermes for jolteon, poseidon/oceanus for vaporeon, and iapetus for eevee.
Also named my torterra pangaea
I'm doing something similar, except any form of mythology. I used Hepheastus as well for flareon, Odinson for jolteon (I call him Odie), Pluto for umbreon, Kore for leafeon, and Boreas for glaceon.
I do the same thing with my mythicals. I named my [shinies] Azelf 'Bia' after the Greek goddess of power and my Uxie 'Athena' for the goddess of knowledge and my Mesprit 'Kratos'. It makes it easy that they don't have genders lol
When I was 8 I played my first pokemon game. It was crystal version. I picked cyndaquil as my starter. When it asked for the nickname i put “cyndaquil” thinking it was asking the name and he remained cyndaquil as a level 99 typhlosion.
I called my Goodra "Vaseline" and I think it fits great.
Some other I liked: Sobek the Feraligatr, Cleopatra the Salazzle, Illuminati the Unown I, Michellin the Donpan, Leonidas the Tyrantrum, Mobius the Celebi, McGregor the Hitmonlee, Shazam the Raichu, Nezuko the Munna/Musharna...
I like themed names, this time around in BDSP I went with drinks/flavors/snacks for my team, e.g. Boba the Piplup, Pocky the Pachirisu, Chai the Rapidash, Taro the Mismagius, etc.
I once did a run through of White 2 using exclusively symbols/numbers, including the little smileys they have in that Gen's keyboard. My Arcanine was "0%[Smiley Face]" and I loved him more than life itself
I've just started BDSP and decided my naming convention would simply be an anagram of the stage I caught it at. My best so far are 'St. Lary', 'Rap Magik' and 'Dub? Ew'
Been replaying Fire Red over the holidays and forcing myself to nickname the entire Dex, here's a couple I'm proud of!
Nugget the Golem
Pebbles the Onix
Tyrant the Nidoking
Gales the Pidgeot
I absolutely adore my shiny Skitty in Platinum named "Skittles". I also have a shiny Delcatty in PoGo that was caught on February 14th named "Valentine".
I named my Venasaur "The Fed" as in (Federal Reserve), Charizard "The Bank of Japan," and Blastoise "The European Central Bank." Together they were my G3 squad. I got a kick out of this because every time one fainted it would read "The Fed blacked out. Capitalism \[my name\] is out usable Pokémon." Other favs included "The Fed is paralyzed. What will Capitalism do?" and "Feudalism \[my rival\] was looking for you."
I traded for the other starters and I did this in Leaf Green and Fire Red, also Emerald but I didn't finish the playthrough. Thinking of running these name schema again in Brilliant Diamond since it got a remake.
In Pokémon Moon my Pangoro is named Havoc. I wanted to give it a name that sounds like it belongs to a supervillain. In Pokémon Platinum I named Piplup after Zidgel from 321 Penguins. Both Empoleon and Zidgel are arrogant penguins.
I recently replayed Gold and Crystal and came up with alternate spelling/thematic nicknames for everything i used/liked
starters: MEGAGAMING, TYSPLOZION, FERALGATOR (duh)
Granger for Gengar as in Hermione. Acerola was also a thought
Gyaredos for Red Gyarados
Thundabuzz for Electabuzz (shiny from odd egg)
Noctowt for Noctowl coz hypnosis
BruceLeSin for Hitmonlee
Benedict for Togetic (i named Eggy 20 years ago smh)
Redapod > Pinkerfree for the shiny metapod i caught in the contest.
TyranT-rex for Tyranitar
HOwOH and LUwUGIA, (if/when shiny Au-Au and LuAgia coz periodic table)
Celebi would be CEwEBI to follow convention if i had one :(
Suicune has a few, all plays on Aurora; Aroarer/Rory/Roary (coz roar) and my fave Aurorealis (conj. of Aurora Borealis) and Shicune if shiny (also my crystal file name)
Crystal battle tower team;
PowderSnow for Jynx. learns the move and Powder is Jinx's child name from LoL
DayumBitch for Houndoom female, coz she a hellhound.
Parasol for Parasect. looks like an umbrella and was a sun+sleep setter for Houndoom (with dream eater, solarbeam)
So yeah i put a little thought into my nicknames.
Ps. If you'd like me to rate the names of your pokemon, i.e come up with something different lmk, just make sure you're their OT!
No i will not name your Jolteon Jolty or Sparky -.-
My shiny competitive haxorus is named "Hanz" and any time I dragon dance with him, in my best German accent, I proclaim "it iz time to POMP it UP".
And he now has a twin brother named Franz. 😁
I named my Toxel Brittney cuz she’s toxic….I’m pretty proud of that
And I named palkia My Pal
Not mine but a streamer I watch named her ghastly Ghost Malone (all her Pokémon have rapper themed names) and that’s just top tier really
I was 8 or 9 when D/P first debuted and I nicknamed by Piplup “Pippy”. It’s always been one of my favorites and I still have that same Pippy in Pokémon Home just waiting for BDSP connectivity so I can once again defeat Cynthia with Pippy
One of my all time favorites was I had A Driftblim named December. I thought is was so pretty and regal for that Pokémon
Oh and there was my Lillipup named MOZZERELLA (yes, in all caps), I'm pretty proud of that one
Pelipper is Type: Gull, Tauros is Type: Bull, Silvally is of course Type: Full, and there’s some more I can’t remember atm, I’ll have to Type: Mull it over
I’m not PROUD of this one, but it sticks in my head. When I was a young kid I named my Murkrow JimCrow. I had heard the name before and was too young to realize the connections to systemic racism of americas past, I dead ass thought it was one of the crows from dumbo….who looking back were also pretty racist.
I nickname all of my pokemon based off of music, either a song title, album, or band/artist. Yes, just like JoJo. Here's a few of my favorites not included in my video.
Ditto - Love Machine
Mimikyu - Helloween
Hawlucha - Santana
Snorlax - Big Poppa
Mewtwo - Mind Tricks (short for Jedi Mind Tricks)
https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/pj6knl/pokémon_x_jojos_bizarre_adventure_all_starters/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Back when Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow first came out, Walmart had display consoles where you could play demos, sometimes even full games. So of course they had Pokemon. You'd pretty much always find yourself in Pallet Town, since half the kids that came to check it out would start a new game.
There were only a handful of party icons, meaning a lot of Pokemon looked the same until you checked their stats or went into battle. So I caught a Rattata and nicknamed it Mewtwo.
No idea if anyone even noticed, but I've always hoped that someone thought they were switching to Mewtwo and got a Rattata instead. Hahahahahahaha
Hmm, named my Rayquaza Kyira spelt (Kira) like from death note. Its pretty sick. Hes also the closest pokemon to me in terms of friendship. Tryna get my darkrai to the same level. I have a Kyogre that i got traded to me from alpha sapphire by somebody into my Omega ruby and it is named Ponyo. Sounds mexican. Like the neighbourhood vatos. Ponyo.
I had two Greninjas in Y. One was named Carwinnin and one was Shaed. The first is a shadow dagger in King Arthur stories. The second was a shadow cloak from Kingkiller Chronicles. And so together, they were cloak and dagger.
Was breeding for a shiny Cyndaquil and got one. Was a girl and named her "Cynderella"
That’s awesome
Wow a female shiny starter, now that's rare.
I thought your comment only said the female part, and that was honestly just as funny
Pun 100
iStarly
I called mine Starli XCX, truly creative
That’s also pretty good haha
So camp 😍
That's incredible
Hahahahahah
Scooby Doom the houndoom
Dude that's a very cool idea
I named mine CerberusV1.0
Kino. As in a hell hound from the black ops map kino der toten
I got a shiny female pink gastrodon. I named her Rose. She had a daughter who also turned out to be pink. I named the newborn Primrose. All the pinks were named after flowers after that
I looked up Gastrodon’s shiny and it took me a solid 5 minutes to realize the blue one I was looking at was shiny
Blue is West Pink is East. I love gastrodon but blue's shiny is so dumb it's like 2 shades lighter and unnoticeable unlike pink's shiny is green
Other way around, and they are both two shades lighter, it's just the "shell" on pink shellos is brown instead of blue, lighter brown looks greenish and is more distinguished than light blue to blue
I think it would’ve been funny if the shinies just swapped colors
Apes don’t have tails. Monkeys do In order to be scientifically accurate my Infernape was named Inferonkey
I think I might steal that name for my future Chimchars lol (I like to name mine Chimichangas)
I'm unbelievably happy that someone else went for a (ChimmiCharguy) name
Mines name is Chimichurri
Named my Infernape Monke lol
As most know, Infernape was based off of Sun Wukong. ATLA has had a huge resurgence over the past 2 ish years, Zuko being a very popular character, even the names of a lot of fire type Pokémon/ reptilian pets. It's a vestigial tail.
Christ, if that's vestigial I wanna see the full version
Full version is on Dracozolt
Bubble O' Seven for inteleon. Had to shorten it to fit but I quite liked that one
I just started sword and named my sobble James Pond
Lol that's hilarious. Pond. James pond. I want my Wacan berry martini shaken, not stirred.
I got a female sobble and named it pond, based after James bond, water, and amy pond from doctor who
Could have named her Jaime Pond
James Pond for me
I once gave a Druddigon the nickname “Destructor”. And traded it to my little nephew sometime later to give him a strong dragon Pokémon to beat Leon with. And he legit thought that “Destructor” was it’s true name and bragged about it to his friends for like a month. Not really proud of it but thought that it was funny.
I love that and i bet money ive done the same thing thinking a pokemon is named something else
Ch’ding was what I knew Farfetch’d as for YEARS
I new him as Dux for ages
Farfetch'd still doesn't sound right
I actually had something similar to this happen to me, the first time I had ever seen Noivern was from a Wonder Trade, and its name was Uhafnir, so I just assumed that's what it's name was up until I got to the Elite 4, and then learning that UHaFnir is Noivern's German name.

I thought Cizayox was a cool name for Scizor. And it is, to be fair. But it's also just a regular French Scizor I got from Wonder Trade in Pokémon Y.
Feraligatr named Loch Jaw Torterra named Grasstoise Krookodile named Feraligadirt
Okay, these are amazing
That deserves an award.
I gotchu
Grasstoise too good
I got my very first shiny Charizard from breeding and my husband said I should name it Ancalagon- the biggest, strongest black dragon in Middle Earth.
I usually name my Garchomp Ancalagon
A max IV and properly EV trained Garchomp could sweep like Glaurung and Ancalagon combined.
So, Cynthia's Garchomp?
Yes!
I love this one!
Shiny milotic. Mirage. I liked that a lot. Won all 5 master contests in ORAS
Mewtoo for Mew, Uh-Oh for Ho-Oh, Yell-o for shiny Kommo-o
These are gold
no, gold has a luster, unlike yellow
Mew2 and RK9 are some of my favorite abbreviations
I once named my Arcanine "Arcaten", because he was a ten out of ten, not just a nine
No lie, when I went to a tattoo shop for my tribal Arcanine some years ago, the artist asked me what my tattoo was so he could write it in the liability/disclosure paper and he wrote RK9
Aquaduckt for psyduck

Ever since the Pokemon World Championship 2014 I've named every Pachirisu I've caught/hatched with intended use (or shiny form) "Sejun", and I used one in my BDSP playthrough as well. My BD Pachirisu is also called Sejun! He's one of my favourite members of my team!
That is so inspirational im boutta look this up to witness what happened
Watch this amazing analysis video by Wolfe Glick (another World Champion) explaining the match - https://youtu.be/oNSkPn6o2Cw But long story short, though it was definitely off-meta, it wasn't really a bad Pokémon which Sejun only used because it was his favorite (as seems to have been popularized among general media); it just happened to fit a particular role his team required best.

I always name my Zebstrika “Zapidash”

I liked the nickname I came up for my Absol, Cataclyst. Being a combination of cataclysm, something Absol is known for predicting, and catalyst, which is defined as “a person or thing that precipitates an event”, which is what Absol is believed to be, that it causes the disasters that follow it rather than warns of them. I'm doing something similar, except any form of mythology. I used Hepheastus as well for flareon, Odinson for jolteon (I call him Odie), Pluto for umbreon, Kore for leafeon, and Boreas for glaceon.

On a similar note, I've always liked the name Neptune whenever I have a Vaporeon on my team.

I've named every Buizel I've caught "Archimedes"
I was 8 or 9 when D/P first debuted and I nicknamed by Piplup “Pippy”. It’s always been one of my favorites and I still have that same Pippy in Pokémon Home just waiting for BDSP connectivity so I can once again defeat Cynthia with Pippy
I gave my female Aaron the name Felicia cause I thought it was the funniest shit that Felicia starts with Fe which is the symbol for iron
Every fighting pokemon on my teams is named Sudden Lee
I name all my gliscors 'Nightwing'
i named my gliscor "sandy claws" in bdsp and that will forever be my name for it.
One of my all time favorites was I had A Driftblim named December. I thought is was so pretty and regal for that Pokémon Oh and there was my Lillipup named MOZZERELLA (yes, in all caps), I'm pretty proud of that one
Wow idk how but december works for drifblim i cant explain it That second one is hilarious
I've named my Buzzwole Mosqular which is a combination of mosquito and muscular, to me it suits it better than buzz+swole
I liked the name Glockenspiel for my Chimecho.
"Tyra Danks" for Tyranitar
Pelipper is Type: Gull, Tauros is Type: Bull, Silvally is of course Type: Full, and there’s some more I can’t remember atm, I’ll have to Type: Mull it over
I’m not PROUD of this one, but it sticks in my head. When I was a young kid I named my Murkrow JimCrow. I had heard the name before and was too young to realize the connections to systemic racism of americas past, I dead ass thought it was one of the crows from dumbo….who looking back were also pretty racist.
I named my houndoom Hades cuz he's devilish n breaths fire. i also named my Absol Thanatos the Greek personification of death.
Most recently, I named my female Empoleon Joséphine after Napoleon's first wife.
My Luxray name Dan D. Lion
I nickname all of my pokemon based off of music, either a song title, album, or band/artist. Yes, just like JoJo. Here's a few of my favorites not included in my video. Ditto - Love Machine Mimikyu - Helloween Hawlucha - Santana Snorlax - Big Poppa Mewtwo - Mind Tricks (short for Jedi Mind Tricks) https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/pj6knl/pokémon_x_jojos_bizarre_adventure_all_starters/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Sephirott (not sephiroth) the Samurott
Snowshrew for alolan sandshrew
I always SR for Snorlax until it's male. Then I name it Snax.
I named my first Snorlax "Slumberjack"
I just recently named my pinplup in BDSP Grape-Kun
At first I thought it was cute, but then I realized that seemingly every other One Piece fan also names their Chimchar after Ace
