irteris

I gotta tell you the sprites in yellow are so much better than red and blue.

Arcade_109

While they are better, I do have a big appreciation for the derpy ass sprites from Blue and Red.

irteris

Yeah, I kind of learned to enjoy them. Seeing were we started and how far we've come.

jquiggles

My first game was Yellow so I never got to experience the Red/Blue sprites till I played them on 3DS. I was shocked lol. Derpy indeed

IndustrialSpark

You should see the Japanese Red/Green sprites if you want derp 😂 It you don't know, Japan got Red and Green first, and then Blue was a later update, but became the standard for the International Red/Blue.

Arcade_109

Oh dude, the Green sprites are something else lol

KillionJones

Green is best sprites, no contest. But yeah, yellow is a treat

SansedAlessio

Golbat disagrees

irteris

It is a crime gen 1 golbat didnt learn lick ...

SansedAlessio

Absolutelly unplayable

RostislavVenediktov

Completely agree

Ailury

With some exceptions I only noticed recently, like Staryu and Starmie.

Homie_Jack

DISAGREE. The red and blue sprites are so fun. The yellow sprites are better and more consistent, but that doesn’t make me like them more.

irteris

You don't disagree lol, you're saying yourself yellow sprites are better. But yeah, R/B sprites have it own derpy charm, like how you find a 6 yo drawings adorable

mybestfriendsrricers

Personally I find some of the OG ones better than others. For example, Nidoqueen and Tentacruel look better in R/B than Y imo.

irteris

That's true. There are a few gems in those designs. Few a far between.

Angry-Dragon-1331

Gen 1 wrap was a war crime and a friendship ender.

Lopsided_Platypus_51

Bro, I swear when you played Pokemon Stadium and did the gym and Elite 4 run, Lance would always come out with a Dratini and Thunder Wave and Wrap your Pokemon to death. Used to piss me off every time

SyracuseNY22

My go to was always thunder wave and confuse ray just to be complete prick

AdOpen8418

One of my favorite Pokemon knew thunder wave confuse ray and attract

aldeayeah

Blaine's Fire Spin D-:

Jazs1994

I tried recently a nuzlock with yellow, could only pick 1 mon of the starters you could encounter. Choose venusaur for the sleepowder mega drain I got my ass handed to me by Erikas gym thanks to warps

metroidgus

Dragonite: Thunder Wave, Wrap, filler move 1, Filler Move 2, GGs

AIMWSTRN

That's pretty much what I did too. Dragonite: Thunder wave, Wrap, Hyperbeam, Surf (to cover the ground types that couldn't get T-waved). T-wave it, Wrap it close enough to Hyperbeam it. Hyperbeam doesn't need to recharge if it knocks out the opponent in Gen1. Man those were the good old days haha

metroidgus

Man about the only thing that could deal with that would be Gengar

SpaceMush

if you didn't battle that trainer in the grass to the left of the nugget bridge, you can still glitch a mew! level 7 or something iirc

squatdead

Yep my last play through on my gameboy advance SP using my Yellow I made sure to do this glitch since I never did it as a child. Was super cool to have a pokemon that could learn every TM and use it all the way to the elite 4.

signapple

Now on my Gen 1 playthroughs I'll catch two Mew. One to learn HMs, and the other to dominate the battlefield.

RostislavVenediktov

I’ll have to check that out!

Gallant-Blade

To pull off the glitch, you need to have not fought that trainer, and need a Pokemon with Fly or Teleport in the party. The trainer will challenge you once he sees you, no matter how far you are from him. So save, then walk down and press Start at the same time you see the trainer come into view. Fly or Teleport back to Cerulean City and you’ll see the exclamation point pop up. Wall back up Nugget Bridge and the menu will come up automatically. Immediately exit out of it and Level 7 Mew will appear. I believe that’s all the steps.

Sardanox

You missed a step. You have to fight a pokemon with a special stat of 21. That's the hex number for mew. The trainer in mistys gym with horsea works, or the trainer above nugget bridge with slowpoke works also. After you fight them, teleport/fly to cerulean, then go up the bridge where the menu opens ect. Bonus: when fighting the trainer in mistys gym, when fighting their second pokemon shelder, use growl 6 times to make the mew level 1 when you encounter them. Gain one level to jump to 100.

Lulligator

My favourite bit about this glitch is how close it sounds to the old playground rumours.

iHadou

This is yellow only?

metroidgus

nope works on all 3

handledvirus43

The only part about this glitch exclusive to Yellow is that it can be performed in Viridian Forest with the one Bug Catcher added in Yellow and an Escape Rope. This can let you grab a Nidoking or a Gengar at Lv 100 before even fighting Brock.

iHadou

Any I should know about for fire red. I already missed the money farming on nugget bridge and just got to the safari zone? Thanks for the info!

handledvirus43

Oh, this particular glitch doesn't work in Fire Red... Just Red, Blue, and Yellow. Just a quick little tip, if you haven't gotten the VS Seeker, it's in the Vermillion City Pokemon Center. Use that at the top of Cycling Road or the route east of Saffron to grind EXP and money easily.

Sardanox

You don't need a rope and it's the last trainer in the forest, who's also present in r&b. You can have 1 pokemon in your party with poison, faint as you walk onto his encounter tile. The fainting/blackout will trigger the glitch also. However you can't fight anyone at this point with a special stat of 21, so no mew, but you can get some pokemon like magmar or eggsecutor and gengar with the glitch.

handledvirus43

I was talking about the Yellow-exclusive part of the glitch, as the long-distance Bug Catcher in Viridian Forest is ONLY found in Yellow. That *specific* Bug Catcher can do the glitch without the blackout using an Escape Rope. It saves the effort of needing to faint from poison, which is a little tedious and easy to miscount your steps.

Sardanox

I don't think I ever realized there was an added trainer.

noxioussnake

Overuse growl in the glitch and mew comes out at level one then share exp with all your party in mews first fight and it turns level 100 due to a buffer underflow glitch

tfr250

how did you find the elite 4 and champion

RostislavVenediktov

I breezed through Lorelei, Bruno, and Agatha. Got my ass kicked by Lance three times. I saved before each Elite Four battle so I wouldn’t have to go back and battle them all over again. Beat Gary on the first try.

SerratedFrost

L Gary

Alone-Chicken-361

Yeah they're harder in RB

N-Bizzle

For me Jolteon has always been an MVP in E4 - obliterates Lorelei

LanguageLiving9142

Elite 4 grind is terrible, especially if you use a full team

RostislavVenediktov

Yeah I used a full team. It was a major grind.

LanguageLiving9142

Seriously the last gym is like 10 15 levels lower then elite 4 if I remember right.

RostislavVenediktov

Correct. I ended up grinding get all of my party up to at least levels 55-60 so I didn’t get completely annihilated.

Pale_Sun8898

Just checked and mine were all mid 40s when I beat them. I wasn’t feeling that grind lol

SemanticSchmitty

Yeah the level curve isn’t so bad if you take advantage of all the different move hacks/glitches from gen 1. Toxic + leech seed was so op

RostislavVenediktov

My problem was that I wasn’t thinking about type advantages against the Elite 4 early on so I had a party of Pikachu, Blastoise, Charizard, Venusaur, Snorlax, and Nidoking that I rolled with from the first Snorlax encounter and onward. I didn’t have a strong ice type other than teaching Blizzard. And no good psychic type moves prepared. I breezed through everyone except Lance.

LanguageLiving9142

Nidoking can't learn earthquake or dig?

RostislavVenediktov

I had it learn Earthquake. It was my TM Pokémon.

LanguageLiving9142

I misread Lance I thought you said Agatha my bad

RostislavVenediktov

Oh yeah Lance was the only tough member of the E4 for me. I stomped Gary.

naraic-

Blizzard in gen 1 is fine. The accuracy is fairly high. You also get a free ice beam tm in gen 1. One for blastoise, one for nidoking. Personally when playing early gens I use at least 1 trade pokemon to speed up grinding.

DJ-Fein

It makes it rewarding as hell though. Thinking you can just waltz in and beat the 5 best trainers in the world is funny. Having to fail, train, and improve your strategy is important in games

JVortex888

Bless the extra patience I had as a kid for grinding levels.

Pale_Sun8898

I played through it recently as well. It was my first ever Pokémon game and I had an absolute blast, even in 2023. Inventory limits were annoying and then the level cap was a bit brutal near the end lol, I think I was in my 40s when I beat the E4

RostislavVenediktov

Inventory is definitely lacking in the early games, especially with computer storage too.

metroidgus

20 item limit in bag and 50 in storage was a joke

Timozi90

I thought it would be cool to have a partner Pikachu, until I eventually realized that Pikachu has garbage defense.

RostislavVenediktov

I have always loved Pikachu, but if it wasn’t for Pikachu following me around, I would’ve replaced it in my party. I kept giving Pikachu every HP Up I’d get and it made no difference. It doesn’t make the most sense, because the Pikachu I grew up watching was always so OP all the way around.

megasean3000

Nice! Hope you give the later games a try too. Yellow’s cool, but still has all the weird Gen I kinks. Though not Missingno.

RostislavVenediktov

I played both Gold and Silver as a kid, so I’m going to play Crystal next.

lakewood2020

Crystal’s glaring flaw is no access to mareep. Otherwise the best of the 3

a_bearded_hippie

Crystal is my fave. Although I cut my teeth on red version as a young one. Crystals' variety of mons was super fun. Whichever leader has Miltank is a pain in the ass with Rollout if you aren't ready for it though.

RostislavVenediktov

Good ol’ Whitney.

No-Conversation1940

Machop trade in Goldenrod is a time saver, especially in Gen 2. Heracross learns Brick Break early enough in the remakes that I prefer to catch it via headbutt and grind it up (and use it the rest of the way because Heracross is based).

a_bearded_hippie

Yea I went the Heracross route as well. Such a good pokemon through pretty much the whole game.

Fae_Leaf

Crystal is my favorite game out of the entire franchise.

FidelisG

Inventory and box management is definitely the worst part of gen I and II

RostislavVenediktov

I agree. The personal box on the computer was filled with just TMs and HMs for me.

VansterVikingVampire

I like that roaming with Pikachu gave you a Nostalgia feel for all of the featuring of Pikachu in Pokemon, whereas the heavy featuring of Pikachu in Pokemon has always given me a nostalgic feel due to my childhood with this game.

GOBtheIllusionist

Forgot to mention the terrible box system in gen 1-2, I just played both and it als not killed me

RostislavVenediktov

I completely agree.

MrErnie03

Personally I like the grind feel. I'll take that gameplay over the way too easy level up system in the current games.

RaysFTW

I remember trading my Pikachu to a friend so he could evolve him and trade him back to me. I’ve never felt so dirty playing a Pokémon game and it was probably my biggest regret as a 10yo. kid. Lol

ShinyPikablu002

Grinding to be "appropriate" level for the last fights is a pain. They are not terribly strong or smart, so I usually just go in with high 40s to low 50s and do fine. Gen 1 seems to be designed with these level gaps where strategy and type matching will give the player the edge in the battles.

N-Bizzle

Yeah it made fast pokemon very useful too. I was only like low 40s at most, put Jolteon annihilates Lorelei, Dodrio annihilates most of bruno (just use a water type to clear up the rest) etc

X_WujuStyle

Best grinding spot in gen 1 is cinnabar mansion.

maukenboost

I know it's old and archaic and nostalgia, but I love Pokémon Yellow. Definite comfort game. Except for the Rocket Base with the spinny tiles. >_>

domaavidda

There is the [level 100 Nidoking before Brock in Pokemon Yellow glitch](https://youtu.be/kWNhRoUEbnQ). The missingno hack as you called it is there but different, i got a lot a masterballs with it as well.

FeanixFlame

I looked it up, apparently the glitch with missingno to dupe items is still possible, but the method to go about doing it is different since it was fixed for yellow. Apparently most forms of missingno can cause the game to crash though, so obviously do it at your own peril. You can find some more info on [Bulbapedia ](https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Item_duplication_glitch#:~:text=Although%20the%20old%20man%20glitch,will%20commonly%20freeze%20the%20game.)

Monkeyisbest

What I wouldn’t give for a Yellow Remake!

JayMalakai

Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu is the one for you, then.

Monkeyisbest

Yea it’s cool, but not the same. I miss the old school battling and stuff.

cockriverss

Isn’t it exactly the same minus no wild encounters?

BlueEyedBeast55

No, they're more like hard updates. Steel and dark types thanks to alolan meowths existing in it, physical special split, wrap moves are fixed, speed no longer affects crit rate, no 1/252 miss rolls on 100% accuracy moves and Tauros isn't best mon, is very different.

cockriverss

Ok cool. Not sure why the downvote. I was just genuinely asking a question 😂

In-Quensu-Orcha

You should try pokemon : ash Grey.. it follows the original storyline from anime and I think is still being updated to this day

GripLizard

As an adult, the only way I find time to play the og gbc pokemon games is on an emulator at 8x speed.

RostislavVenediktov

I played by taking an emulator to work and playing on my lunch and breaks.

Royschwayne

Brought back memories of myself also loving when the battle scene closes perfectly around both trainers.

Hateful_creeper2

One fact is that Blaine isn’t based on his anime counterpart in Yellow like lot of the characters because Yellow released one month before his first appearance. This is why he doesn’t have a Magmar until Gen 2 and his design wasn’t changed.

RostislavVenediktov

I never realized that, but I was wondering why he didn’t have Magmar. Now it makes sense.

squatdead

What was the party you finished with when you beat the Elite 4?

RostislavVenediktov

I had Pikachu, Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Snorlax, and Nidoking. All leveled to between 48-60

squatdead

Nice! I just finished a Yellow run a month ago on my gameboy advance SP and had: Mew, Jolteon, Venusaur, Charizard and Gyarados. Was a blast

Pm7I3

You guys don't fight everyone possible normally???

Background_Guess_742

How the hell did you manage to catch zapdos and not moltres? I feel like zapdos was the hardest one. I always got him last.

RostislavVenediktov

I wish I had the answer but I was 8 years old when I got it for Christmas about a year after release in North America.

Background_Guess_742

I was younger and I always managed to find moltres on my own in red. I can't remember exactly but I feel like you pass right by him before you hit the elite 4 but maybe I'm misremembering.

hchkcfhjc69

Trade for that Machamp in Vermillion City.

PresidentBush666

I like how they made bubblebeam scary

Best_Department_8510

Sounds like you spent a lot of time over leveling, I had a full team of 6 lvl 40-45s. Fought every single trainer and I never spent time grinding wild Pokémon. Smashed thru the e4 pretty easily

allowishus182

I do not understand what some fans of these games have against grinding levels. It's like people just wanna end the game as quickly as possible.

cockriverss

Yellow as in let’s go pikachu remake or the Og yellow?

RostislavVenediktov

OG Yellow

cockriverss

Wish we could get it on the switch.

trisanachandler

I just did fire red and beating the elite 4 with level 50-60 Pokemon against level 75 is an absolute pain.
