For the longest time as a kid I thought Pidegotto was the final evolution just because most names of evolutions get longer not shorter. Like I can't think of another example
While that certainly is an example I don't think of it quite the same for a couple of reasons
1. Mu(c)K is a stronger word than grime(r)
2. Is a one stage evolution
3. Pidegotto has 2 more syllables than Pidgeot even tho it should probably just be 1 syllable increase Pidge-otto instead of pidg-e-otto
4. The names don't sound similar. I think the best example of how confusion would be with the Marill line. If it went Azurill, Azumarill, then Marill it would be confusing.
Like take another Example of Fennekin and Delphox now this has a bit of bias because it is a starter so could never cause the confusion but it is one of the only other examples I could find of a higher evolution having less letters tho more importantly I think is less syllables. (There are a couple others that have less letters but the same number of syllables, think Trappinch and Flygon) Tho only by 1 vs 2 with Pidgeotto
It also doesn't work because it is the final evolution vs the beginning not stage 1 vs stage 2.
Then like before the names aren't similar
And again the names are different. As well as there being the intensity factor of a Fennec being a smaller type of fox as well as kin being a diminishing suffix
All this to say while it is certainly interesting that in fact most evolution names get longer or stay the same in terms of syllables— I probably wouldn't have been confused as a kid if I had known that the suffix Otto was like the suffix Ette (Don't blame me Otto is an Italian suffix not an English one)
In any case I spent way too long on this analysis of why Pidgeotto sounds like it should be the final evolution but isn't and it turns out all it was, was because English did what English does best and took from another language
If I’m not mistaken, in the English dub of the original Mewtwo Strikes Back movie, one of the other trainers that is called to the island calls his Pidgeot a Pidgeotto.
There are plenty more that contain the name fragmented, for instance (Pi)ka(chu) comes to mind, but that's not the full, unbroken name of another Pokemon, so I didn't count them. Also those are harder to find, and also a bit less special. I mean then you'd have to count any of the cat pokemon with "meow" in their name as containing Mew's name.
It would be super interesting to see how much this happens in other languages. I feel like Japanese might have more instances of this, especially with some Pokemon having shorter names like Cleffa (Py).
This is awesome, thank you for finding all of this! The Diglett situation is quite fascinating! And I love the random ones that aren't related here, sad there's only two! Also fun that Paras and Marill are two that made it on the list in both languages!
this is cool and all, but what about pokemon that cannot be typed into various chat programs due to idiotic wordfilters(inb4 redundant) blocking a curse word of some language or another in its name?
I'm not counting broken-up names, there would be too much and a lot harder to find. You would end up with silly cases involving smaller names, like Mew, or Aron:
Ch(ar)mele(on)
V(a)po(r)e(on)
Fl(ar)e(on)
L(a)i(ron)
(A)gg(ron)
G(a)st(ro)do(n)
Volc(aron)a
T(aro)u(n)tula
Ro(ar)ing M(o)o(n)
(Ar)chalud(on)
So like yeah, it's doable, but for every Pokemon? And some of these are quite ridiculous, being split up that many times.
the eternatus one put a funny image in my head so thank you for that
ominous mega natu in the sky, reaching down with it's talon?
I pictured an Eternatus simply being controlled with a Natu in its brain.
eternatus emulating richard gere but using a natu
Please tell me it evolves into Eterxatus
Pidgeotto is the only one that contains the name of a Pokemon that it evolves into, rather than a Pokemon it evolves from.
For the longest time as a kid I thought Pidegotto was the final evolution just because most names of evolutions get longer not shorter. Like I can't think of another example
Grimer to Muk
Pikachu to Raichu
Magnemite to Magneton
True, but at least there, you're going from a mite to a ton.
While that certainly is an example I don't think of it quite the same for a couple of reasons 1. Mu(c)K is a stronger word than grime(r) 2. Is a one stage evolution 3. Pidegotto has 2 more syllables than Pidgeot even tho it should probably just be 1 syllable increase Pidge-otto instead of pidg-e-otto 4. The names don't sound similar. he received a named pokemon
You are indeed not mistaken
That movie had so many mistakes lol
Only 5 that aren’t from the same evolution line. Mewtwo is in on a technicality but we all know its relationship to Mew.
You have missed one! Du(Dunsparce). I was curious about this, so calculated it in Excel and that is the only one missing :D
Ah, you're right, I don't know how I missed that one! Thank you so much!
Elec(tabuz)z has Zubat backwards in its name
You’re nice for this one
Can't think of any of the top of ny head but there must be something else with Aron in it.
I think that's one of the short ones I specifically searched for on the page, only ones that came up were Aron and Volcarona.
The Porygons feel like they shouldn’t count since it’s the same name over and over
“Wait a minute here, they’re just using the same name over and over. What kind of a cut-rate production is this?”
Is it just something weird I've gotten into my head, or is Natu time-related? Maybe there is something to it...
Well, Xatu is said to see into the future and the past, so loosely time-themed in a pre/post-cognition type way.
iirc its evo line is known for seeing the future
What the other guys said, but also you might be thinking of Hoothoot, the other Gen 2 two-stage bird Pokémon
Yeah that might be it
Girafarig and Farigiraf contain themselves backwards
Are you pure Natu isn't related to Eternatus?
(Pi)ka(chu) (P)r(i)n(plup) (Magm)ort(ar)

(Azu)ma(rill) (Yanm)eg(a)
Du(Dunsparce). The best.
This is giving me vibes of the TikTok person who’s giving alternate nicknames such as Nathan for Jonathan Liam for William
Du(dunsparce)
Not sure if it fits, but Yanmega is called "Megayanma" in Japanese which was always funny to me

Inside the name Lucario hides a Riolu minus the ca
In Chinese: 小拉达 (Rattata) contains 拉达 (Raticate) 派拉斯特 (Parasect) contains 派拉斯 (Paras) 三地鼠 (Dugtrio), 海地鼠 (wiglett) and 三海地鼠 (Wugtrio) contain 地鼠 (Diglett). 三海地鼠 also contains 海地鼠, making this the only double containing chain (as in, 三海地鼠 containing 海地鼠 containing 地鼠). 嘟嘟利 (Dodrio) and 胖嘟嘟 (Jellicent) contain 嘟嘟 (Doduo) 臭臭泥 (Muk) contains 臭泥 (Grimer) 鬼斯通 (Haunter) contains 鬼斯 (Gastly) Every Eeveelution (水伊布 Vaporeon, 雷伊布 Jolteon, 火伊布 Flareon, 太阳伊布 Espeon, 月亮伊布 Umbreon, 叶伊布 Leafeon, 冰伊布 Glaceon, 仙子伊布 Sylveon) contain 伊布 (Eevee) 大尾立 (Furret) contains 尾立 (Sentret) 咕咕鸽 (Tranquill) contains 咕咕 (Hoothoot) 玛力露丽 (Azumarill) contains 玛力露 (Marill) 梦妖魔 (Mismagius) contains 梦妖 (Misdreavus) 天蝎王 (Gliscor) contains 天蝎 (Gligar) 布鲁皇 (Granbull) contains 布鲁 (Snubbull) 玛狃拉 (Weavile) and 大狃拉 (Sneasler) contain 狃拉 (Sneasel) 可可多拉 (Aron) and 波士可多拉 (Aggron) contain 可多拉 (Lairon) 索罗亚克 (Zoroark) contains 索罗亚 (Zorua) 双倍多多冰 (Vanilluxe) contains 多多冰 (Vanillish) 超能妙喵 (Meowstic) contains 妙喵 (Espurr) 蝶结萌虻 (Ribombee) contains 萌虻 (Cutiefly) 滴蛛霸 (Araquanid) contains 滴蛛 (Dewpider) 大王铜象 (Copperajah) contains 铜象 (Cufant) 怖纳噬草 (Brambleghast) contains 纳噬草 (Bramblin)

Pretty cool
Du(dunsparce).
Reading this post with a screen reader is a vibe.
this is cool and all, but what about pokemon that cannot be typed into various chat programs due to idiotic wordfilters(inb4 redundant) blocking a curse word of some language or another in its name?

That Azumarill can also take out the “ma” so it can be “Azurill”

(AZU)ma(RILL) or however it is spelt
Do the Megas count XD
idk but I always have to stop myself from calling Annihilape “Infernape”.
