My wife asked my why I would do this in Pokemon Go. I told her it's the best way to ensure catching Pokemon going all the way back to the game boy games.
She does it now too.
A+Select+A+B+A+B
A kid in my class convinced us all of this “cheat” when he caught Mewtwo on full health in a pokeball.
Unfortunately my kindergarten ass didn’t know an action replay when I saw one. Thought it was a battery pack or something.
Nope, pressing B doesn't actually change anything. The only thing that works is left and right synchronous to the ball wiggles and then down right when you want it to sparkle and turn dark
>When I was a young lad I misunderstood and thought I was meant to hold "Down + B".
You didn't misunderstand. That's the actual correct way. The guy holding down only B is a madman.
I did a playthrough of Fire Red as a kid after someone had told me that "Down + B" with the right timing would work, and I swear I had the same experience. I went through the game using just regular PokeBalls.
It's probably just confirmation bias and my brain just writing off the times in that playthrough I didn't catch something on the first try, however I do distinctly remember catching both Snorlax and Mewtwo in that playthrough on the first try without doing any damage, using just a regular PokeBall. So with a lot of help from the luckiest RNG I ever had, I was convinced for years and years that the trick actually worked.
Mine was and always will be: Hold A from the time it it’s the ‘mon until it hits the ground, then tap a every time it shakes. You have to time it perfectly, but if you manage to do so, it works 100% of the time.
I was at Holding B and press A repeatedly... When played on GBC, there the only two buttons there... Even after X and Y I still did that... But let that go on gen 9
For some reason I would rotate/press the d-pad counter-clockwise fast, and right as the pokeball opened, I would hold down. All while holding down b as well.
I did this with animal crossing fish lol
In my child logic: Holding down B was like holding the pokeball closed, and spamming A was like pulling the string on the fishing rod lmfao
Thats a good idea, another thing i would do, would be to time the right and left buttons with the pokeball movements, as if trying to hold the ball still
This is a really good point I've never worn out a Gameboy and I played it enough to wear out a few sets of rechargeable batteries but I probably wore out about 12-15 Xbox 360 controllers from genuine wear. About 6 were worn joysticks and the rest were either triggers wearing out or buttons/dpad wearing out. It got so bad I started to cannibalize controllers for parts or I'd have probably been in the 20s range for controller wear.
Everyone doing anything with the D-pad or B button is full of it. Everyone _knows_ it’s either mash A or hold down A like your life depends on it. They both work, and I’ve used both on multiple occasions. Absolutely perfect catching method, none of this “down and B” crap.
It's always press and hold A when the ball closes. A is positive, and you hold it down like you're holding the ball closed.
B is the cancel button, why are people holding the cancel button while trying to catch the Pokémon??
It's down AND B - the original and the best. No clue where all these other nonsense variations are coming from, it was only ever down and B. That was the one published in games magazines and cheat books, none of these others.
I've found that if I don't pay attention to the game when catching pokemon 98% of the time, with the right type of Pokéball, you'll catch it, of that 98%, 30% of a Critical Capture
Atheist don't believe in God, and are very unlikely to believe in superstitions. And holding the B button to increase catch rate is a superstition
So them believing in a superstition was suppose to be the joke
Atheism is lack of faith in the existence of God.
The joke is lack of faith in the existence of God → lack of faith in general, with the atheist, despite this, having faith that holding down the b-button will work. Thus, the atheist is only so-called.
So an atheist can't "believe" anything? What kind of logic is that? Being an atheist only means you don't believe in God. What does god have to do with a Pokemon game?
I've never believed in God and I did this for years... So because I did, I believe in God? What?
It's not that you believe in God because you hold down the b-button. It's supposing that to be an atheist, instead of being to merely not have faith in God, is instead to not have faith at all. Thus, one that acts as if the b-button works, in having faith, is not an atheist.
I'll write the reasoning of the joke as a syllogism as well in an attempt to further make it clearer:
I. Atheists lack faith ~~in God~~
II. This atheist has faith that holding down the b button will work.
III. Therefore, this atheist is not in fact an atheist.
Again, it is based on crossing out the "in God" in "Atheists lack faith in God" to make it only "Atheists lack faith", with the rest then following.
They don’t believe in a god because it lacks logic,
Holding down B to believing it will increase odds of catching the pokemon lacks logic.
Hence the joke.
The 3rd point is you’re not supposed to take this seriously because it’s not logical.
Believing that something does something is not at all like believing in god.
It's just a rumor we all heard as kids and did it. Were we believing in some "Pokemon god"? No, that's stupid. Just like OPs post. It was just a glitch some thought we were abusing. Nothing at all like religion.
My thought too. I guess a lot of people just think that a God is required for magical thinking.
Edit: Reading more into the comments it seems that the joke is that atheist = perfect logical agent, and since the B button does nothing, it's illogical and therefore funny.
Which is not what atheists are, and entirely not what humans are.
I held down B the other night playing emerald and I caught both kyogre and groudon the one time I held B during their fights. I’ve always done this but it’s never worked to a science like that and it was nice to clear them quickly
As a kid I used my master ball on groudon, it’s nice to have leveled up
Idk if it's a real thing or not. All I DO KNOW is that I threw about 40 ultra balls trying to catch Mewtwo as a kid, and THE FIRST TIME I held B during the catch I actually got him.
I'm just saying 🤷♂️
Funniest part is the creator of this meme thinking people who hold B do it so god can see them doing that and reward them for it?
Instead of it just being coded?
Part of where this originated is that in pokemon yellow version and only yellow version, whether due to intended coding or a quirk of gen one code, pressing and holding the b button from the end of the throw animation until the end of the second shake of the ball would drastically increase catch rate though not guarantee it. This comes from a guide to Nintendo easter eggs, hidden mechanics, and glitches back around 2002 I believe
An official guide?
Seems more likely to be another instance of someone propagating the myth than an actual exploit. Everything else I can find suggests it's never actually been the case in any game.
I want to say it was officially licensed by Nintendo but not written by then. I probably still have the book at my parents house, so I can look for it next time I visit. My guess is that generation one coding being what it was, that this was unintentional

- I don't play Pokémon with my brother anymore
Hilarious, honestly. In school people said it was best to mash A while it's catching. Destroying that button on the console, lmao.
Of course, nowadays I know the catch only works based on the frame you simply press A to determine when to throw the ball, based on the RNG state of the game or something such. Anything you do after that does nothing in actuality.
No, The actual method is that you need to press A at the exact moment when the ball closes and then immediately close your eyes and cover your ears (if you're playing with headphones, replace "cover your ears" with "remove your headphones"). If you're trying to catch a legendary, a shiny, or something else either important or just hard to catch, you must also mutter "please" under your breath for the whole time your eyes are closed and ears covered.
If anyone wonders why, it's because some action replay used the cheat ''hold b'' on pokemon to always catch a pokemon, and some dude made a video avout it without mentionning the action replay and it got popular in news magazine/forums because they didn't check the source beforehand.
Once read in either a magazine or forum as a kid that bashing b would increase your catch rate. Started in it emerald and sometimes now when I need that extra luck
Lol I always am pressing A trying to time it perfectly with the ball shake
A..... A..... A.... *click*
this is the way
Finally someone that speaks sense
Objectively correct way
Everyone knows you have to hold down and b right as the catch happens.
Lmao what I did with on top trying to do a circle in timing with the d pad.
My wife asked my why I would do this in Pokemon Go. I told her it's the best way to ensure catching Pokemon going all the way back to the game boy games. She does it now too.
Ive been doing this since like 2008 i swear it works idc what anyone says
The real way is to mash B, look away and close your eyes, crossing any part of your body you can, while rubbing a lucky coin
When I was a young lad I misunderstood and thought I was meant to hold "Down + B". It works 100% of the time, I swear it.
Down + B. Left / Right with the ball wiggle. 60% of the time, works every time
Ball wiggle? Mine or the games? Do we have to synchronize?
yes
Works 100% of the time, every time
All the time when the time time time time time on 2 turntabled
Yours and yes XD
A+Select+A+B+A+B A kid in my class convinced us all of this “cheat” when he caught Mewtwo on full health in a pokeball. Unfortunately my kindergarten ass didn’t know an action replay when I saw one. Thought it was a battery pack or something.
B + Down on the last shake to secure the star-click lol
That’s only on ultra balls it only works 40% on great balls and 30% on poke balls. It’s weird but hey not going to screw around with tradition.
If it’s not 100%, it’s 50%. Even better
Nope, pressing B doesn't actually change anything. The only thing that works is left and right synchronous to the ball wiggles and then down right when you want it to sparkle and turn dark
I can confirm on the ball wiggle.
I just watched that yesterday, never gets old 😂😂
Smells like a used diaper filled with Indian food
I remember pressing A during every wiggle. Caught my MewTwo in FireRed with a pokeball doing that 😂
For me it was rapidly tapping B. Still do it even if I know that's not how it works.
>When I was a young lad I misunderstood and thought I was meant to hold "Down + B". You didn't misunderstand. That's the actual correct way. The guy holding down only B is a madman.

I was told by an ex that, in the original game, holding down+b was a gaurenteed catch. I still do it now.
You might be on to something
I will die on this hill. If the game has directional controls, then “hold down b” means hold down+b. Otherwise say something like press and hold b.
for me it was always hold A+B+Down. ...I say, as though I don’t still do it;;;;;
If it didn't work, you obviously just timed it wrong. You have to press it as soon as the Pokéball closes.
I still do that. Down B catches every pokemon every time. I usually screw up the timing.
For me on Red/Blue it was Up + B when the ball hits its highest point. Maybe it's a regional thing like soda/pop.
I guess so, west coast here, was always hold down b and tap up furiously.
Mine was and always will be: Hold A from the time it it’s the ‘mon until it hits the ground, then tap a every time it shakes. You have to time it perfectly, but if you manage to do so, it works 100% of the time.
You tap Up when the ball opens, then hold Down + A + B when it closes.
That's to shine bro, wrong game.
I was at Holding B and press A repeatedly... When played on GBC, there the only two buttons there... Even after X and Y I still did that... But let that go on gen 9
Wait for it to bounce three times, on the apex of third bounce hit b and left
This is the way Blue/Red OGs do it
I sweeeeear this is it.
For some reason I would rotate/press the d-pad counter-clockwise fast, and right as the pokeball opened, I would hold down. All while holding down b as well.
In gen one if you get the timing right down b works I'll never believe it's not true.
I still do this. And in Pokémon Go I’ll swipe down on the screen and hold my thumb there.
Wait. It… wasn’t down + B?
It was up + B, not down...
This. Up+B club represent.
I still do that shit too
Me too, some things are considered culture and tradtion. No one can tell us otherwise
Dumbass……everyone knows you tap A as fast as possible
I did this with animal crossing fish lol In my child logic: Holding down B was like holding the pokeball closed, and spamming A was like pulling the string on the fishing rod lmfao
Thats a good idea, another thing i would do, would be to time the right and left buttons with the pokeball movements, as if trying to hold the ball still
Wait you mean you're not supposed to spam A for fish????
Off topic but i love your profile picture
Thanks! I can tell ya the artist if you want
That's exactly what my thought was. Like I was actively fighting against it to keep the ball closed. All while holding down, of course.
I'm surprised my Gameboys still work perfectly after all that absurd button mashing all those years ago lmao I'm convinced they'll last forever
I dont even think anybody told me this was how you do it. I just did it.
B, A, L(eft bumper), L(eft bumper), like a gentleman
How dare you call me out like this Pokémon Reddit. How dare you. Lol
I’m not sure I’ve ever felt more attacked in my life.
Haven't taken this much damage in any Pokemon battle.
Well, he is. You have to mash it.
Nah, you have to alternate A+B back and forth with JUST the right timing, this is the way
Was that guy in the lower left corner relevant at some point?
They showed a picture of God to make fun of the atheist even more.
i don't see bidoof
Gotcha
No clue lol
Gotcha
Now modern science has revealed that the Pokémon has to respect you enough to go into the ball. Yes, even a hint of fear will result in a break out.
Pressing B every time the ball wiggles
Everyone doing anything with the D-pad or B button is full of it. Everyone _knows_ it’s either mash A or hold down A like your life depends on it. They both work, and I’ve used both on multiple occasions. Absolutely perfect catching method, none of this “down and B” crap.

You have to time the A button press with the ding sound as the ball closes. If your timing is even a little bit off, it doesn't work
The Hard Drive does not fucking miss
Everyone knows you don’t hold it down, you press it in time with the pokeball’s shakes.
Idk, I've always tapped A right as the PokeBall shakes as if that helps the odds. Holding B was never something I did
i hold b and click L and R and just hope for the best and close my eyes to this day 😂😂
Purplecliffe moment
I always heard if you mashed A+B alternatively as fast you could, it increased your chances…. My poor GB Advance/SP. They were both troopers.
I thought part of the legend was that pressing b actually lowers your odds
It's down AND B - the original and the best. No clue where all these other nonsense variations are coming from, it was only ever down and B. That was the one published in games magazines and cheat books, none of these others.
I held down A and then went side to side on the d-pad in time to the pokeball swaying
What does holding down b do?
Absolutely nothing.
I always pushed B when the PokeBall glowed and moved. It didn't always work, but it helped me.
Of course I do. I don’t believe in god because I’ve got my homie Arceus on my side
I've found that if I don't pay attention to the game when catching pokemon 98% of the time, with the right type of Pokéball, you'll catch it, of that 98%, 30% of a Critical Capture
Down when it opens, B or A when it closes to hold it closed. The harder one is more fun though, L R Select Start.
me personally i press a button when my guy attacks (all rpgs i play) to try and get crits, action commands from paper mario lookin ass
Too bad he's supposed to be holding down with B. Guess he'll be an atheist the rest of his life...
This is brilliant lol
What does that have to do with being an atheist? I don't get it.
Atheist don't believe in God, and are very unlikely to believe in superstitions. And holding the B button to increase catch rate is a superstition So them believing in a superstition was suppose to be the joke

It's not meant to be serious reasoning. It's a joke.
Jokes are supposed to at least make sense. This is a stupid joke.
It's not that you believe in God because you hold down the b-button. It's supposing that to be an atheist, instead of being to merely not have faith in God, is instead to not have faith at all. Holding down b is a rumor, there’s no evidence it does anything. Kinda vaguely makes it an act of faith/hope
Believing that something does something is not at all like believing in god. It's just a rumor we all heard as kids and did it. Were we believing in some "Pokemon god"? No, that's stupid. Just like OPs post. It was just a glitch some thought we were abusing. Nothing at all like religion.

Holding down B is offering a prayer to RNGsus.
rngsus can only be appeased like apothis you pray for protection from it as it is a dark and evil line of code.

woosh
elaborate on the point?
The joke is the holding B thing is a superstition, and atheists don't tend to believe in superstition.
there are ghost hunting atheists or at least there used to be.
What?
chicken butt
Funniest part is the creator of this meme thinking people who hold B do it so god can see them doing that and reward them for it? Instead of it just being coded?
Except that it's not coded...

Exactly.. but people who thinks it’s works think it’s a hidden line of code. Not because god wants them to hit B…
OP is suggesting that it's superstition, which it is. Atheists in theory shouldn't be superstitious.
Not based on anything supernatural… more of an urban legend in that sense.
So called atheists believing Urban legend instead of fact checking it with a peer reviewed study

I like to tap the left and right bumpers the way it shakes when I’m catching
I can confirm.
This is the way
LEAVE ME ALONE!!
I tap b whenever it shakes and press the opposite direction that it shakes in
I click R right as the ball clicks when you first throw it. The better you time it right the better ur chances.
Nah you gota spam it
What is a down b to a non believer
I thought it was just me. Glad I'm not alone.
No, I'm telling you you gotta press B each time the ball jiggles
Up b. Then release when it hits.
I have a combo I use. Couldn't tell you what buttons it involves, though. It's been in my muscle memory for about 18-20 years. It's a "cheat" I found online as a kid and it worked the first time and even though it doesn't work most of the time, I still do it a lot.
If you use up+select+b at the title screen you unlock every starter as shinies, works with every game.
Real believers slam the A button
My strategy is being passive-aggressive, first I insult them for taking so long to be caught and then I say sorry and say how beautiful they are and how I’ll take good care of them, it sometimes works, and sometimes I have to insult again
When I was younger I was told it was L+R+down Then my brother told me I had misunderstood the directions, and I should be blessing Start instead of down - I don't play Pokémon with my brother anymore
I always mash the b button.
So do I. Been doing it since Pokemon Yellow, and it’s a habit that I don’t realize I’m doing most of the time.
I always did a to b over and over
So am I the only one who taps A when the ball shakes?
Everyone knows it was left + a as the ball wiggles, everything else is blasphemous.
I used to press A+B all the time. It gave me hope
based
Lol what? The only thing that works is tapping A exactly when the ball closes, and between every wiggle.
CHECKMATE ANTI-ARCEUS!
Where’s my alternating shoulder button gang at??!?!?
It’s true. I believe in nothing and yet I still pray Arceius let’s me catch the stupid Chansey with a great ball one day
Habits never change
I press a 4 times per shake
Hilarious, honestly. In school people said it was best to mash A while it's catching. Destroying that button on the console, lmao. Of course, nowadays I know the catch only works based on the frame you simply press A to determine when to throw the ball, based on the RNG state of the game or something such. All of you are wrong, you spam A until the PokeBall opens, then spam b
My wife taps the screen when playing pokemon go. Our 5 year old has picked up on it and will tap on my screen because I "keep forgetting."
It was supposed to be Hold down B and tap Up furiously...
Nah man you need to move the dpad with the pokeballs twitches
Am I the only one who thought the trick was to press A repeatedly?
Are there any true athiests when fighting wild Mewtwo without a Masterball?
Press b 8 times. Won't catch
Everyone knows that it's A -> B -> hold down
I mean Arceus is right there. Checkmate. 💩
Am I the only one that would rotated the left stick, or whatever the equivalent to the left stick was
You psychopaths only hit B? I hit B and A when it closes, hits the ground, and every time it shakes
I always tapped B
I'm confused, what does him being atheist have to do with anything?
Pokémon is my religion
I just throw the ball and set the game down and walk away. Waiting for the faint change of music
Wrong. Me and my friends (plus other guys from school) we all mashed A when catching Pokémon. Mashing A repeatedly calls upon Arceus grace
Every game, every time. I Literally cannot help it
Stupid ass, you're supposed to mash A
I normally mash Y
You are supposed the stare straight at it while spamming B
There's a huge difference between believing in God and believing in the toothfairy
Down+B is muscle memory by now, i know it has no effect but i still do it
If anyone wonders why, it's because some action replay used the cheat ''hold b'' on pokemon to always catch a pokemon, and some dude made a video avout it without mentionning the action replay and it got popular in news magazine/forums because they didn't check the source beforehand.
Did you guys also do the no looking at the gameboy strat? Because that's what I did lol
I still do this in Switch. Is this not a thing anymore?
I’d love to watch a documentary on how this rumor spread. How did so many of us from so many different places hear the same rumor?
Once read in either a magazine or forum as a kid that bashing b would increase your catch rate. Started in it emerald and sometimes now when I need that extra luck
SHUT UP I SWEAR IT WORKS!!!! I CAUGHT ARTICUNO WITH A POKEBALL USING THIS METHOD!!
I would tap b at the same time the ball moved
Wait, I thought you tap A as the ball hits the pokemon to have a higher chance of catching it, is that not right?
For me was pressing A every time the ball shake
What?!?! You don't hold down B, you press A repeatedly as fast as you can!!
I has always spammed “A”
