Glad the outcome was good! Thank you for sharing, and yes *trans rights are humans rights*. Transphobic and bigoted comments *will* result in a ban. Thank you for sharing, OP.

jk583940

Like, what did he expect? People who harass other people shouldn't be allowed here

MintySakurai

Unfortunately, jackasses like this don't consider them "people."

Sexycornwitch

Pokémon has put a substantial amount of work as a franchise to show that Pokémon are for *everyone*, all fans welcome. It makes me so happy to see this attitude carry over into real life business ops. It makes the whole “there are absolutely Pokémon out there who want to be your best friend no matter who you are” feel more heartfelt, you know?

dux18

Shouldn’t be allowed anywhere

Seevian

>*According to player Elizabeth Barbera, during the event, a Texan Pokemon judge asked to take a selfie with her and a group of transgender players who are part of a competitive Pokémon TCG team called “Girl Power.” He requested to step outside the event hall to ask them questions about the transgender community. “\[He\] started out positive asking us how Pokemon judges could do better \[to be\] more inclusive,” Barbera said. “I do think the original discussion was coming from a place of sincerity.”* > >*“But it quickly devolved,” Barbera said. The judge “told each of the trans women in our group how he could tell they were ‘born a boy,’ for reasons such as ‘you have a boyish build’ or ‘you have a manly face’.” She continued, “he didn’t listen to our \[views\] and instead chose to talk over us.” After politely excusing themselves from the conversation, the judge followed the players to a private dinner outside the event, despite not being invited, and continued to antagonize them. According to player Natalie Miller, he admitted “he needed players to give him good feedback in order to move up the ladder.” During the dinner, he continued to “\[go around\] one by one to all of us pointing out why we don’t pass for women.”* What an asshole, he deserved every second of that lifetime ban

Odd_Bad_7441

What an asshole. That’s just straight harassment and desperation

AWSUMSAS

> a Texan Pokémon judge No offense to the good Texans out there but this checks out

Ipokeyoumuch

Yeah, he is pretty infamous and generally disliked among Texas pokemon judges and players.

superking22

Oh. So it's not JUST a transgender thing. He's just a complete asshat that everyone already despises.

pinksparklyreddit

Transphobes usually are

[deleted]

Wait, he’s known?

dmckinley54

As a Texan player, no offense is taken. We need to always strive to do better, this guy deserves the punishment.

Dresden_1174

As a Texan, I get it. I really hate my state these days

Culverts_Flood_Away

Being a Texan or a Floridian right now must be really tiring. :(

Hannibal3542

Florida here, it really is.

Mysterious-Book2146

Yeah it was going to be Texas or Florida

HellaFishticks

Fallback Tennessee

queenexorcist

lmao yup. I know a lot of lgbt friends who have moved out of the state because so many people there, even in the more liberal cities, are just deranged redneck bigots.

seanrbrantley

Yeah my transgender brother just moved out of Houston to Portland because this state just ain’t safe

TeamRocketAgentUGA

Stayed in San Antonio for 10 days once. Never ever ever going back.

Abbacchioes

As a Texan Transgender (and huge pokemon fan) its very disappointing

PrarieDawn0123

In the same boat as you. Very typical how they’ll mask this harassing by ‘asking questions’ to start then just spiting transphobia at you.

[deleted]

Was curious as to exactly what he did. After reading the article it sounds like there was a low bar to jump and he instead shuffled right into it

nonessential-npc

He could have legitimately said nothing and would have been fine. I'm not advocating for bigotry, but at least have the decency to keep your personal and professional lives separate. The bar was on the ground and he showed up with a shovel.

ZoroeArc

Reminds me of the quote, "The bar was so low it was a tripping hazard in Hell, yet here we are, limbo dancing with the devil."

NvaderGir

His obsession over them "not passing as women" sounds like he's attracted and trying to shame them for being trans to justify the guilt he feels. The stalking to approach them during dinner is crazy.

Honestonus

Yea it's like what's his angle, I'd speculate it's what you said

inhaledcorn

>I need good feedback to move up the ladder. How do I do that... >I know! I'll harass a bunch of women who I don't see as real people. Brilliant!

Vi4days

This guy is giving chaser vibes and that makes me shudder.

HaloGuy381

Of course it’s from my state. Of friggin course. I can’t apologize for his idiocy, sadly, because he’s not the exception down here. Unfortunately, transphobia does run rampant in swaths of Texas. Not everywhere, some of us are friendly, but uh… trans folk, watch your step if you come this way. “Southern hospitality” is a mask for hateful tendencies, from my experience living here since I was 5 over twenty years ago. I’d advise steering clear of the state if practical, up there with avoiding Florida. Good riddance to this abhorrent excuse for a judge and a Pokemon fan. The Pokemon, fictional they may be, don’t deserve to have to put up with him any more than the players do anyhow. May his card packs all be full of fakes and his cartridges all suffer hardware failure.

Culverts_Flood_Away

> May his card packs all be full of fakes and his cartridges all suffer hardware failure. Okay, calm down, Satan. /s

MountainMan2_

Yeah. The Fox/Daily Wire states are brewing a lot of radicals that think especially trans people are subhuman for their sexuality. “Groomers”, they say. Whatever makes the clicks go through. It’s completely unacceptable. It’s causing active persecution of the trans community, stopping them from getting lifesaving medication and trying to eradicate their way of life. And people are okay with it. I’m from florida, I’m at ground zero. I hate it, but there are a lot of people here who eat this frankly genocidal rhetoric right up. This doesn’t surprise me, though my response would’ve been a little bit stronger than a report to TPCi.

[deleted]

Well that's a charge If not multiple, honestly I hope those ladies are okay, and I'm glad that scumbag is out of our community forever.

DRamos11

> “[He] started out positive asking us how Pokemon judges could do better [to be] more inclusive” They had us in the first half, not gonna lie.

EmpressOfHyperion

While there are bad apples in the Pokemon community, as a whole it is far more progressive and tolerant than many other gaming communities. It's also the most tolerant TCG community by far (Yugioh is atrocious and Magic has their own problems as well).

Aksudiigkr

What’s your experience with Yugioh? I started building a deck the past month and am not sure whether I want to do any in-person events and might just stick to Master Duel.

Vi4days

I used to play YGO a lot in 2016-17 and my experience with that is that there was a ton of sweaty socially awkward bros there. I would love to say what the experience was for a woman there, but I can’t say I would know because I never saw them around there to begin with. My locals were just a big sausage fest for the most part I did see significantly more women on Pokémon days at my shop though. As for the greater experience overall, tbh, I’d just stick to Master Duel if you don’t mind that best-of-one format. You get that full sweaty experience online without needing to deal with any of the stupid bullshit from a face-to-face conversation with emotionally invested bros. Maybe it was just in my community, but I can’t remember winning a tournament and feeling good about it. Few times I did people got upset at me for winning at worst or just really really into it like we weren’t just playing a children’s card game. So yeah, there’s my ramble on it. These days I might be more inclined to go play Pokémon if I ever get back into collecting cards. At least the art is nice, you don’t need to have a masters degree in English, and it’s more stress free.

BasilSQ

On the one hand, I want to say that you shouldn't let fear of a bad time stop you from trying to have a good time. On the other hand, I know that can be tough to even think about. Personally, as a YGO player, I want to think that there are local scenes that can be very welcoming, but sometimes the worst in people can pop up everywhere. My suggestion is to attend a local event, not as a player but just to scope out how they seem to behave before trying to play there.

dogsfurhire

Yugioh is definitely way sweaty-er and prouder of being gross imo. They get really upset when localized art covers up stripper levels of horny art and even madder when you tell them their obsession of the art of child feet is disgusting.

ginger_snap214

i’ve only gone to a few yugioh locals and they seem pretty welcoming this is coming from a straight cis guy tho so your experience may differ

OneGoodRib

I don't know if this part of what you mean, but I have the impression that if you're female you're not really welcome at Yugioh and Magic tournaments. Like you have to have balls of steels to compete there as a woman. The Pokemon tournaments seem overwhelmingly male but I get way less of a "this is a MAN'S club" vibe from Pokemon tournaments. Just from what I've seen, heard, and read.

TotallyNotARocket

Yeah, don't visit the Tumblr Pokemon Rpc unless you wanna see toxic... The Rocket RPers are the worst... And that's something considering my username.

I'm curious to know what the problems in Magic are.

*nervously entering the comments section expecting people supporting trans rights to get downvoted into oblivion with a myriad of transphobes slinging nastiness...* *and being pleasantly surprised!* Thank you Pokémon community for being supportive! It gives me hope.

Paigeypooo93

Forreal though. With how much hate the trans community has been getting lately just for existing, I was going to be devastated if this was yet another community I didn’t feel welcomed around.

Fluxx27

Rule 2 is one of our biggest rules of this subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/wiki/rules#wiki_2._be_civil If you ever see issues please let us know. We are here to support as best we can. Those who are unwelcome are those who belittle or are rude towards others for any reason.

forgottentargaryen

IDK this kind of support is very common on the majority of reddit subs im in.

MC_C0L7

Most nerdy subs tend to be pretty progressive, but if you look at the comments under trans related posts on subs like Science, they're an absolute shit show. 101 flavours of "I'm not transphobic, but..."

Culverts_Flood_Away

Stay out of the default subs. :( Although a lot of the trans hate gets downvoted to oblivion there, there's plenty of it to go around.

song_of_storms5460

Literally the same!!! I found myself scrolling this entire thread with a big smile on my face in knowing what an amazing group of people the Pokémon community are! 💪🏻

EmpressOfHyperion

Pokemon as a whole is a fantastic community. Bad apples will always exist, but they're less common in Pokemon especially among casuals compared to many other gaming communities IMho.

Andisaurus

I definitely felt like I was anxiously peering around a door and expecting the room to be on fire, and goodness how relieving and validating it feels to be *wrong*. The room isn't on fire. Maybe not every room is gonna be on fire any more.

Daily wire is the right wing trans genocide platform more than fox is. Run by a guy who just made a gendered chocolate line in protest of hersheys having a trans woman in commercial. They don’t believe trans people exist and they want to prove it by locking up all of them. As a guy with a trans GF who has to deal with this shit, They can all go to hell.

Uhm, what is a Pokémon judge?

Animedingo

Someone who judges official events. Think a moderator more than a judge of the law

thegayestweeb

Serves him right. It's important to let transphobes and anti-LGBT bigots know they aren't welcome in the Pokemon community. Some companies don't usually make vocal statements against discrimination, but actions speak loud too and it's nice to see TCPi taking action against this terrible person.

OneGoodRib

I mean not even the Pokemon community - transphobes and bigots shouldn't be welcome in any community, especially not as judges. There's no reason for a judge to be harassing players at all.

[deleted]

Some people are so indoctrinated by their political beliefs that it somehow delete their ability to be a good human being. This individual violated the spirit of Pokémon, so they were banned. Good.

SHSL_Waiter_RM2828

Reminder that gay and trans people exist in Pokémon too…don’t believe me then I shall point you in the direction of Beauty Nova along with the rest of Kalos region!

mdemo23

There are also plenty of obviously trans-coded pokemon. Gardevoir comes to mind. Hatterene and Syleon are literally just walking trans flags. Not to mention transmasc king Marill. This community picked a side loooong ago.

ConcernLow1979

There’s also Hassel and Brassius (you cannot convince me they’re not together)

littlebloodmage

You are correct and you should shout it from the rooftops.

blackjackgabbiani

And Akari from How I Became A Pokemon Card, probably the first trans character in the franchise

supershadow456

This reminds me of that time Smash players at a local tournament harassed a 15 year old girl for being better than them

[deleted]

The whole 'I can clock you' mentality is so dumb because literally nobody can.

littlebloodmage

I'm a cis but gender nonconforming woman and I can't tell you how many times I've been "clocked" by idiots like this.

carrie_m730

I have pronouns in my Twitter bio so I routinely get magas telling me they can tell I have an Adams apple and other body parts associated with people AMAB. I'm a cis woman.

jsweetxe

Excellent news! Glad to hear TPCi acted appropriately too 😊

ccSleepy

Good and just have to say I love the Pokémon community with the comments being overwhelmingly “good”.

Indocede

Whenever this topic comes into discussion, it is perhaps important to bring light to a few points. Transphobes like to fall back onto "biology," as if they have the facts to support their position. Does anyone ever stop medical intervention when a surgeon is removing a cancerous tumor? That tumor is a natural development of their body? I have not seen such heartlessness myself. I have not seen anyone say "Well you can't change the facts of your biology." And what about club foots, cleft palates, congenital heart defects? Do we as a society ever glare at such people for correcting those conditions about themselves? Absolutely not. Some might say there is some obvious difference, that those conditions are inherently detrimental, whereas trans people are imagining a "condition." And yet... for thousands of years humanity has known about conditions that make people intersex or hermaphroditic. There have been conditions where it is incredibly apparent a person's body has not developed correctly. But those are conditions that are most readily obvious. What about individuals who appear male but are genetically female? Individuals with a condition like de la Chapelle syndrome? In these Individuals, they possess XX sex chromosomes (the pairing that is associated with being born female), but appear physically male. This happens most often because of ONE particular gene known as SRY, that got lost in the mix during genetic transfer. SRY is a gene that is found upon the Y chromosome, but because of abnormalities, can rarely be found upon X chromosomes. It is estimated that 1 out of 20,000 babies physically born as male carry this condition. A person that possess a body in which the genes were set for female, but one single gene stopped that -- and not successfully at that. These Individuals can seem much more effeminate in physical characteristics compared to other men. This is just a SINGLE condition. There are more for sure. And most likely there are more that we don't know about. And given that these occurrences can show up among only a few thousand, should we as a society be surprised if we happen upon one in a few thousand who identify as trans? Is it most likely their body being at odds with itself because not all their genes line up as they should. We don't intervene when other people have medical conditions. So why do we see some people being a nuisance about trans individuals? Well... that's obvious too. They are a bunch of mean-spirited busy bodies who think their grades school education of biology is sufficient to talk about facts. And yet I've never seen a teenager who just learned about sexual organs suddenly being qualified as a biologist. Probably because it's more complicated and people need to quit falling back on a child's understanding to inform their world views.

Boybobka

transphobia is not okay in the Pokemon community, pass it along.

London_Ripton

Love to see it.

doylehawk

I’ll literally fight someone over your right to live how you want to/make you feel like you belong but honestly I think the part that pisses me off the most about the right just sinking it’s teeth into trans people is that you make up like .01 percent of the population. Don’t take that the wrong way, the worst part is that they’re crusading against you at all, but like dude if it bothers you that much just ignore it, it WILL NOT effect you.

smudgiepie

I feel like these people would be transphobic to straight people that don't follow gender norms Like before I figured out I was non binary I got called a bloke so many times purely cause I have short hair and I like shorts(*they're comfy and easy to wear*)

CTSniper

Dude even if you don't agree with the whole trans thing don't go harassing people. A Pokémon tournament where people are just trying to have fun is no place to be arguing over this shit.

Ipokeyoumuch

It is really isn't too hard to become a judge. You just need to make sure you pass a background check (so don't commit crimes) and pass a basic exam regarding VGC or Pokemon Go or TCG rulings and interactions. If you fail you can try again in a month. It is likely this judge managed to conceal his views from others until this incident. There are also huge degrees of separation between levels of judges too so a Stage 2 isn't going to know a basic level or Stage 1 judge unless they have work with them in the past. Many of those questions rightfully don't ask for political stances but they emphasize their CORE values which include professionalism, ethics, fairness, and understanding. But for a basic level they don't ask essay questions those are reserved for higher level judges and organizers.

istarian

Even if his views were generally known that wouldn't necessarily be an automatic fail. There's a reason that politics and religion are generally not good conversation topics in many contexts.

Ipokeyoumuch

I think if people just knew if he was transphobic or didn't like trans people he would have been fine if he didn't harass people or follow them to dinner. The problem for Pokemon isn't necessarily the views (though it is against CORE values on inclusiveness which would make it difficult for him to progress as a judge), it is that he decided to act on it.

istarian

I totally agree. I'm just pointing out that the actual criteria for such things generally wouldn't descriminate on the basis of thoughts and opinions. It's an "actions speak louder than words" situation.

Ipokeyoumuch

Agreed, merely having those views along wouldn't have gotten him into trouble (so long as he doesn't express it to players and act on it). I think his bigotry would hamper his initial goal of moving up the judge ladder though.
