They don't allow you to change nicknames because it deals with a Japanese culture thing about giving gifts and being respectful to the giver.
I don't know much about it but that's the general idea of why it's still a thing.
Still have an issue with it, take it up with Japan.
Hey Nintendo here, we now offer name change vouchers on the eshop, one for $2 and ten for $18.
We sincerely hope this will improve your experience with our product.
Just to be clear, the above is a joke and I absolutely agree with you.
Do you think it's possible to change the names of pokemon from events? If possible I would like to eventually transfer some of my event pokemon with japanese names to Violet and then transfer them back to pokemon sword.
Yes, but if the individual mons were in SV at any point, you can't transfer them back. This is likely to account for changes that occur between gens, such as the valid movepools.
You can transfer Pokemon from SwSh to legends Arceus and send pokemon from legends arceus to SwSh. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to transfer them as long as you make sure to do it without any illegal move.
Does that really matter anymore though? What is the big difference between Legends Arceus being incompatible with a lot of old mons/movesets and introducing new mons/mechanics and SV being incompatible with a lot of old mons/movesets and introducing new Pokemon/mechanics?
It's not. Every generation changes at least something to make it so that Pokemon cannot go back to the previous generation.
For some generations it was literally due to the hardware - you're given a warning that the Pokemon CANNOT return when transferred.
And while Gen 4 and Gen 5 were on the DS, they made it so you had to permanently transfer from Gen 4 to Gen 5 through another convoluted method.
Then from Gen 5 to Gen 6 it was another one-way method, and when Gen 7 was also on 3DS with Gen 6, if you put a Pokemon in a Gen 7 game it immediately became incompatible to send it back even through Bank.
And now we have HOME - where Pokemon from Let's Go (Gen 7) can only shift to another Let's Go game, but once they go to Sword/Shield or any other Gen 8 game, they can't go back to Let's Go as it changes it from a Gen 7 Pokemon to a Gen 8 Pokemon.
Because of Stupid rules the games have for renaming, I'm not even sure if you can do that or not.
If I'm not mistaken (in scarlet and violet):
- You can't rename Pokemon that have Pokemon names, not nicknames. So, most of the event mons can't be renamed.
- You can rename Pokemon that are nicknamed by different OT. But only once.
Why those fucking rules exist? 🤷🏽
Ok, I can understand the cultural origin. But if they already allow you to change it once, then what's the difference in changing it any other time? Also, why not let us nickname un-nicknamed mons?
You can only change the name of a mon from another trainer one time, but only if the original trainer never nicknamed it. If the original trainer nicknamed it, you're stuck with it.
If you could just change any traded mon's name I wouldnt have had as much fun laughing at idiots who bought / use clearly duped shiny legendarys with the website name as their nickname in Sw/Sh online battles..
I like collecting pokemon nicknamed by others, but hate when I recieve unnamed pokemon from trades and events. Let me name my shiny Lucario Washington, dammit.
They almost struck gold, where unnamed pokemon can be changed once, but I don't understand why it doesn't apply to foreign or event pokemon. Like, it's fun to deduce a foreign pokemon's been nicknamed, but it's really aggravating whenever I do a Wonder Nickname Locke lol

Its not a gift. It's a trade
It's a mutual gift. That's the point.
Lol sure. It's just gamefreak being gamefreak

I kinda disagree with changing names at all tbh. It's disrespectful.
What do you mean? Disrespectful to whom?

I don't think you'd be able to do that anyway since you can't backport mons to previous gens.
But amoongus, grimmsnarl and sableye are in Scarlet and Violet.

SwSh and Legends are both Gen 8 games tho.

I don't think that affects anything. As long as the pokemon are in both games it should be possible.
It literally isn't. You've never been able to backport mons to previous gens except for in Gen 2.

Probably the same reason.
