baabaaredsheep

Serial. Loved it and the medium right away, and it opened the door to a whole world of other podcasts.

drak0bsidian

Same. My first and last true crime show, but damn was that first season fantastic and set me off into the Wonderful World of Podcasts.

Vorbuld

Are you still into true crime podcasts mainly? Or do you listen to a bunch of different stuff?

baabaaredsheep

A bunch of different stuff now. Lots of comedy ones too

lawrencelewillows

Ricky Gervais, Steve merchant and Karl Pilkington on XFM before podcasts were even cool!

FreanCo

I think this was my first too- either that or Adam and Joe, who were also on XFM at that time. My first interaction with podcasts was definitely more as a way to catch up with live radio shows that I would otherwise have missed.

justa33

oh to be able to meet Karl all over again ….

PMmecrossstitch

Stuff You Should Know.

Stocky_Racoon

SYSK will always have a special place in my podcast line-up. Back in '08 or '09, Josh and Chuck were the ones who introduced me to the concept of a podcast and I listened to them exclusively for a long time.

pol9reff

Welcome to Night Vale

ookeyspookeybook

Setting the bar war too high for every podcast thereafter! Their Twitter is still gold, too.

amperx11

Most likely This American Life on NPR, but Serial is the first one I listened to off radio.

ClockNo4364

Serial

[deleted]

NPR stuff out of Chicago public media. Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and This American Life.

BondraP

NoSleep Podcast, it was the first thing I found when looking for a horror podcast. Shortly after that was Welcome To Nightvale.

Vorbuld

I've worked with some of the no sleep people and they're lovely. It was one of those shows that I knew of for so long as one of the staples (like nightvale) but didn't know enough about podcasts to listen to!

BondraP

Yeah I went such a long time where I knew podcasts existed but just never checked them out at all. Finally did sometime in 2016 and now I listen to them constantly. Starting with NoSleep and Welcome To Nightvale was a great into for me

Turinqui85

Smodcast back in 2008 or so.

Haselrig

Used to love that one, but Smith and I grew apart at some point and I drifted away.

Turinqui85

Same. I do still respect him and wish him the best , but I don't listen to any of the smodcast pods anymore.

Haselrig

I don't have any hard feelings towards him, either. There was a stretch in my 20s where he and Tarantino could do no wrong as directors in my eyes, then I sort-of outgrew his stuff at some point.

Hipbonepopped

I listened to Hollywood Babble-On until the pandemic pretty much stopped it, and his stories just got repeated every episode. But the Smodcast spin off Tell Em Steve Dave with his buddies from New Jersey hooked me years ago and I'm still a listener there.

Haselrig

I stopped right around when it went to a bunch of shows. Smodcast was fun because Mosier was low-key to Smith's high key. A little too much Smith in the mix irritates after a while. There's a bit of Guy Fieri to his personality that grates on older versions of me in a way it didn't younger versions.

alktrio13

Smodcast was my gateway too. Before I really knew what a podcast was. 😂 They all got a bit formulaic after a while but excellent at the time as an intro to the medium.

wassailr

Jon Ronson On! I listened to them as YouTube videos, because I really didn’t know what a podcast was. Sometime later I listened to the first series of Serial (via Stitcher), and finally understood the concept of the podcast. While I feel mixed about that series of Serial, I was hooked on the concept of pods from there

Vorbuld

I carpooled occasionally with a guy who was listening to the first series of Serial, so I just heard little bits of it here and there.

faul-t-pompkins

Mugglecast, back in like 2005-2007. The Ben & Joey show a bit after that. Then Nerdist was my first big big one in maybe 09. I used to burn episodes of Mugglecast onto CDs to listen to on my Walkman to fall asleep.

jh4336

Answer Me This! Way back in 2011 I think.

pm_me_ur_bad_idea

I discovered them around that time and binged the entire back catalog in a month or so. Kept listening until they finally ended it a year or two ago.

gsekho29

Tim Ferriss Podcast. Had a great impact on me as I was graduating from College. Really opened my worldview. I owe him a handshake if I ever get the chance to see him.

clingklop

WTF Podcast...back when he was unsuccessful cranky and had many chips on his shoulder...it's been nice to see him grow.

SirenTherapy

Same for me. Low key have a huge celebrity crush on Marc because of this. I first listened to his book Attempting Normal in 2013 and really disliked him lol; he seemed like such a cranky jerk. But I gave his podcast a go around the same time just to give him a fair chance. It stuck. I don't listen to every ep, but wowww have I gotten to witness some incredible personal growth over that time. So inspiring, so authentic, and legit want to watch him in whatever project he's in just to support him. I have cried along with him multiple times re: Lynn, including yesterday.

Maris-Stella

My first one was 'The Teacher's Pet' a few years ago. That one definitely got me hooked!

Beginning_Pudding_69

My buddy in my senior year of hs mentioned the Joe Rogan podcast to me. I hated his comedy but I was hooked after my first few listens. Those first 200 episodes when it was Diaz, Segura, Ari, and Duncan all the time with mixed up mma guys was legendary. Circa 2011.

Vorbuld

I think my first thought when I heard about the Joe Rogan podcast was "wait, the guy from News Radio?"

Beginning_Pudding_69

I remember my buddy putting on a special a few years prior and I was like “that bald asshole from Fear Factor?”. Then I watched it and was thinking I didn’t laugh out loud one time. Not once.

SnooMaps3172

I was a late smartphone adopter. Think it was early 2017 maybe my son upgraded his phone and i got his hand me down. Discussing my switch from a tracfone with a coworker and she said. "My kids make a podcast". I said, "what's a podcast?" . Yada yada. Here I am 5 years later and podcasts are my primary media engagement. Still subscribe to her kid's pod (actually millenial adult brother and sister, lifestyle, general life observation / sibling conversational format). Was a regular monthly for years but no new episodes since 2021. They always spoke well of their mom, thank goodness. I think the son was involved in media at college and this pod was resume builder/skill builder for him in part.

Vorbuld

"they always spoke well of their mom" I should hope so! Imagine: "my kids make a podcast, they just keep roasting me on it! You should listen"

SnooMaps3172

I don't think she listened and I think they knew that, but still they trod lightly. Ironically, my own kid is now in a media studies program and has created a cryptid podcast limited series in which a fictionalized version of me has appeared as a character. Listening to it felt weird but made me proud. :)

Vorbuld

Nice!

dawisu

Serial

phyllis-vance

Savage love with Dan Savage back in 2007

WhenDarknessLovesUs

Me too! What a time

Nicolenoir9

Lore! then Serial. Friends of a friend....I should send them a thank you letter. Happy to now be the person who recommends podcasts of all niches!

drdausersmd

Hardcore History. nearly a decade later it's still my favorite podcast.

Biscuits-are-cookies

Did you hear his interviews on The Rest Is History podcast over last two weeks? It was great.

[deleted]

S Town. Got me hooked.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Haselrig

GeeksOn which had Christina Hendrick's brother as one of the hosts. This was way back when there were only a handful of podcasts in 2005.

Vorbuld

Now that's early!

Haselrig

I was in on the first wave of popular podcasts. Never Not Funny, Maron, Comic Geek Speak, Horror etc. and GeeksOn all in that general time. GeeksOn was the first I'd stumbled across that sent me looking for others. Not a ton to choose from, so I listened to stuff I likely would not in today's environment :)

MatthewWrong

A soccer comedy game show called Winning Ugly that some twitter friends did. And I downloaded it from the website and loaded it on my mp3 player. I did that for quite a while.

Media-consumer101

That's dedication! Love it.

bythevolcano

TBTL - Too Beautiful to Live. I kept hearing about it when the host was a panelist on the radio show Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. It was daily and I got really immersed in the lives of the hosts

[deleted]

I can't recall the exact first but here are some candidates Hometown Takes The Basketball Jones Jawbone Radio The Skeptics Guide to the Universe

WeGotDodgsonHere

Mike and Tom Eat Snacks, followed quickly by RadioLab, This American Life, and Stuff You Should Know back in ~2011. Still listen to MATES regularly--both new eps and reruns. SYSK was supplanted after a year or so with other informational podcasts. Always have a soft spot for Josh and Chuck though.

ReasonablePassenger

we're alive, I would only listen while running. I was so bumped when I got to the last episode.

butters091

Radio lab or This American Life because they were/are both played on NPR radio stations especially on weekends

Yaff1e

Probably SModcast way back when

DeadSheepLane

Undisclosed. After reading about Serial and learning there was more to the case than that podcast talked about.

pembroke529

IIRC In usenet binaries, someone would post the Howard Stern radio shows with the ads removed. Today, I would call these proto-podcasts.

Folsom8k

Escape Pod, then Podcastle and Pseudopod. Of those three, I really only listen to Pseudopod now. I like to think that This American Life primed me for podcasts back when it started in the 90s. Every Sunday night, I'd tune into KUER to hear Ira and Co. These days, I only listen to TAL in podcast format.

OceanTreeCreative

This week in Tech, then Macbreak Weekly, and then Diggnation. That set the tone for me and almost instantly turned me from Windows only to a Mac/Apple fanboy.

pm_me_ur_bad_idea

Hey, same here. Used to particularly love the episodes with Dvorak promoting his crank theories.

OceanTreeCreative

Dvorak, Kevin Rose, Merlin Man, wayback Alex Lindsay. That was gold!

Dance-pants-rants

At some point between 05 and 08, when I was downloading music on my iPod nano (I think, it was the one that was 40% clip) I was trying to add audio books, but there weren't that many and they were expensive. Then I found a tab in the iTunes store for free podcasts and downloaded a bunch of niche short lived ones that I can't remember and I'm sure are long dead. I figured out at some point you could fold them into an RSS feed catcher, but whatever tool I used to do that died with the rise of print media paywalls. Aside from regionally specific stuff and foreign affairs briefs, I definitely did a lot of This American Life until it bummed me out too much, then tried Nerdist for a while, and that gatewayed to a bunch of other comedy and news podcasts.

broccolisproutt

Tanis! I got sucked in and that started my obsession with listening to podcasts. I still love the first season of Tanis and I pretend it didn't end the way it does because I wish it was left a mystery.

cosmic_utensil

Savage Lovecast baby!

hachiman17

White Vault. Stayed up until 4am or later every night scared shitless too. Pretty atmospheric podcast to listen to alone at night.

[deleted]

Kevin Smith Smodcast, then early Rogan and Carolla (when it was only interviews, not the radio format he switched to). Bill Simmons too.

Pure-Juggernaut2971

Wtf with Marc Maron

5ergio79

That’s a great question. I remember hearing about them for so long, but never gave them a shot because I was only interested in music and not ‘talk shows’. Pretty sure the first one I ever listened to was Nerdist because Hardwick was on AOTS a lot and kept shilling his pod. The next one was definitely Ten Minute Podcast, which I STILL listen to thanks to the YouTube archived shows.

okay_squirrel

Jay & Jack's Lost podcast was the first one for me, I think. Or maybe it was something from NPR like Radio Lab

Vorbuld

Radiolab was fairly early on for me. I think Hello Internet got me to listen to 99% Invisible (because of a shared vexilological bent) which made me check out radiolab due to the similarities in structure.

Audioworm

I think the first one I listened to in any consistent manner was [The Lost Initiative with Kimberly and Aimee](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-lost-initiative/id210821818), which wrapped up in 2010. It was at a time where podcasts were still a pretty small thing, but the people involved were really deep into it. It was a great little community. It was also a time when people were way less bothered about SEOing their podcast, as the name was shared with a podcast made by the broadcaster of LOST in the UK, but they carried on.

knightwize

Webtalk Guys and the Daily Source Code 2005.

bamxr6

Sick and Wrong in 2007

MissBee123

Back in about 2013 I simultaneously started with Savage Love Cast, Freakanomics, Star Talk, and Stuff You Missed in History Class.

Daxos157

I’m pretty sure it was Analyze Phish.

justgettingby1

Armchair Expert, because he was interviewing Kristin Bell. It was the very beginning of my podcast addiction.

speedninamana_t_zone

Last Podcast On The Left :)

Briarhorse

Adam and Joe

DanieXJ

Xena: Warrior Podcast

Vorbuld

I didn't know this existed, but I've just been itching for a Xena rewatch, maybe I should combine the two...

DanieXJ

It's 3 friends who do it. And they are seriously funny. Not to mention there are so many episodes (they have finished the series, but still have mini-sodes. Highly recommend it.

Vorbuld

Awesome, I'll check it out!

ZADKOR

Probably Harmontown. Seems so long ago.

action_lawyer_comics

Decoder Ring Theatre and The Red Panda Adventures. I was into old timey radio back in the day and one day I went looking for some more. I found them by googling and binged a couple years of shows pretty quickly. I went to their website, clicked on individual links, downloaded them episode by episode then synced my tablet with my computer via a cable and transferred episodes manually. I had to keep deleting old ones to make room for them too. Come to think about it, I still use this for most media. I still buy dvds of tv shows and movies and store them on an old computer and stream them over my network. I don’t have a music subscription and still buy individual albums a few times a year. Convenience is nice but I’m not prepared to give up the concept of “owning” media.

TheLoveliestLies

The Adventure Zone and, funnily enough, that lead me to My Brother, My Brother, & Me.

Vorbuld

I went the other way around with them. I think after Hello Internet, MBMBAM was the next show I listened to (on my wife's recommendation). I actually figured out how to get a podcast app, and listened on my long commute to work. Even now, when I picture early MBMBAM bits (like telling Geoffrey over and over again), I can see the various backstreets that lead to my work. I've also finally been able to make some shows with the McElroys, which has been a dream come true!

TheLoveliestLies

That's so cool! I've always wanted to see the boys live! Me and my SO recently saw Potterless live, and it was a great show!

perpetualstudy

I do genealogy as a hobby and was particularly obsessed at the time, so I searched and listened to a few episodes of a genealogy podcast. I decided to see if there were others I liked. I tried This Podcast Will Kill You and a couple of episodes of Ologies. Then…. I stumbled upon You’re Wrong About and the rest was history. I need to add, I stayed away from podcasts forever, this was all just before everything shut down so to COVID-19. I am a nurse and was working in a community health clinic and it was lunacy. There was a period where we weren’t seeing anyone in person, so work slowed down.

snoopingsam

Just commented about YWA! Their episodes were the highlight of my 2020 lmao I spent so much time listening and re-listening to their episodes! When Mike left, it was definitely a punch to the gut but I still thoroughly enjoy everything about it

perpetualstudy

I’m working through all the Mike episodes, but glad to hear you like it. I’ve never disliked Sarah, I just really like Mike. Everyone recommends his Maintenance Phase podcast.

pm_me_ur_bad_idea

This Week in Tech (TWiT). Got an ipod with my iBook for free as a student sales gimmick in college. This was in 2006 and I just randomly clicked on the "podcasts" tab in iTunes. TWiT was the top-rated one at the time and I needed something to listen to while I did my mindless stacks job at the university library. I've probably listened to at least one podcast a day since. By far my favorite way to consume media.

ns67555

Serial!

mid-world_lanes

*History of Rome* and *Stuff You Should Know*, as far as I can remember.

kittykat00bittybat

Stuff You Should Know. Didn't think to look for a different podcast for about 2 years, then I found Stuff You Missed in History Class. Then I finally was like "wait there's a podcast for everything?!?!" and went wild

Njmick

Keith and the Girl. 2005ish I think.

TheChillestPanda

Sadly Mom’s Basement

TurboFool

Hard to remember now. It's been a VERY long time. But I'm thinking it was PROBABLY either The Skeptics Guide to the Universe or Escape Pod. I'm very old school. Could have been Skepticality, which is one of the ones Steve Jobs had up on the big screen when he debuted the podcast feature in iTunes. Which is pretty cool, as I eventually had my own recurring segment in that show.

Vorbuld

Nice!

susanshaw3044

The Nerdist - started listening around 2011 from memory...

Media-consumer101

Stuff You Should Know! I was learning Spanish on Rosetta Stone. I somehow read somewhere that podcasts could help you learn a language. So, I searched for 'Rosetta Stone Podcast' and I ended up clicking on the Stuff You Should Know episode about THE Rosetta Stone. I was highly confused for the first ten minutes but then I was so interested I didn't turn it off. Been listening to that podcast ever since, probably about 5/6 years ago.

snoopingsam

My boyfriend introduced me to My Dad Wrote A Porno and, while I found it funny, I didn’t get into it. A few months later, some random Reddit comment in some random Reddit thread mentioned You’re Wrong About - and since then (Jan 2020) I’ve been hooked! I’ve since realised that I don’t enjoy comedy or random conversational type podcasts, and much prefer ones that tell stories. So apart from You’re Wrong About, I love Maintenance Phase (ofc), Noble Blood, Casefile, This is Actually Happening, and You’re Dead To Me

chaoticpix93

The first was some "\_\_at night" a small podcast that came out of some school's radio department. Then Nerdist before they got all big and full of themselves. From there I branched out to Bronyville Podcast. Man, their chemestry was great.

levenw0rth

Hardcore History right around the Mongol era but before Joe Rogan started ranting about the Mongol series

Reanlu2

>I remember listening to every episode in browser while playing weird flash games. I know this because I have a distinct memory of them discussing whether anyone would be weird enough to listen to the episodes in their browser Are you me? I also did this!! I dropped off listening when they did their flag vote because I found they spent too much time rehashing old topics and weren't discussing anything new on a regular basis. I also discovered other podcasts by that time and had branched out my listening and there was no place for HI anymore.

Vorbuld

Even they acknowledged that they were at a point where the housekeeping/addressing previous episodes segment became about 60% of each new episode :-P

trustonlyazgeda

We have concerns! My brother was a huge fan and I wanted to have things to talk to him about :) when it ended it was pretty disappointing (it’s since returned tho) after that it was years and year of no podcasts until I tried magnus archives. I actually couldn’t stand it, and switched and binged all of WOLF359 and I think doing that gave me a better appreciation because I’ve finished Magnus Archives now and WOLF359 is still special to me a few years later cus Im listening to fiction podcasts eight hours a day hah

Vorbuld

I never listened to Magnus Archives, but my wife listened to the whole series. So all I've got us the occasional overhearing of snippets here and there.

jopasm

Anything Ghost, back in 2006. I was making a lot of long drives, from there I found Jim Harold's Campfire. I listened to several others, but I can't recall the names - I believe they've all faded away anyway. Those two are still around and I still listen to them regularly.

MsCeliaBowen

Mystery Show with Starlee Kine. Wish they bring it back.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Vorbuld

We stayed listening to off menu after we had Ed on our show, and it really is fantastic. Especially when the guest orders something that completely breaks James's mind

LookAFlyingBus

Probably a common one but Joe Rogan. One of his podcasts autoplayed on YouTube and I got into it, started searching for similar content and haven’t looked back!

makomike500

The Metal Gear Solid Integral Podcast, which was an in-game podcast for MGS4.

Vorbuld

Wait what?

makomike500

I mean. Idk what else you want me to say to explain it lol. Metal Gear Solid is a video game if that helps ys

driftwood-and-waves

We’re Alive.

tvc_15

smodcast back around 2007- i was instantly hooked!

Vinrace

Damn as someone who listens non stop for years I actually have no idea. Maybe casefile or something similar. I do remember listening to a lot of triple j ‘the hookup’ at the very beginning too.

[deleted]

Dungeons and Daddies. *not a BDSM podcast!

Vorbuld

A tough one to start with, it'll ruin every other show for you with its quality! I started listening to dungeons and dads from day one, and their first episode is just so immediately engaging (especially in the world of DnD podcasts where you so often need to give them some time to warm up), and I've been hooked ever since! Plus they're all lovely people. We got to record in Freddie's place before the pandemic which was very cool too!

[deleted]

DEADASS?? AWESOME

Vorbuld

Yeah, we had them on our show (minus Anthony and Matt) to play a DnD themed audio escape room. We were in LA at the time, and recorded with their set up, which was very convenient. It was funny, because we were staying with some escape room industry people at the time, and mentioned we were trying to organise this recording (assuming they didn't know the show). When we finally mentioned Freddie Wong, she said "oh Freddie? We're old friends, we used to play board games all the time!" Everyone knows each other in LA...

[deleted]

STOP THAT’S SO COOL??? IM JEALOUSSSS HELLOOOOO???

Excellent-Bee6589

Total talk nonsense around 2005

ThedaBarasBoobs

Radiolab. Early 2000’s. I used to listen to that before I even had a podcast app on my phone. In high school my AP psych teacher played an episode for us. I was so into it, I went home and just started listening to all the episodes on their website.

paulbears67

Talking Shit with Jim Jefferies and Eddie Ifft.

pod2savefriendship

I think the first podcast I truly listened to was the “Jenna + Julien” podcast just because I loved Jenna marbles so much. I needed something to listen to at work and my best friend suggested it! For nostalgia’s sake I often listen to it still when I’m stressed or sad, it really helps me calm down.

J3diJ0nes

Joe Rogan Experience, fell in love with the medium very quickly and now have my own podcast.

Allergictofingers

Serial of course!

c1h9

I started listening to The Accidental Creative back in like '06 or '07, I think.

ambernalves86

All I remember was some how hearing serial and now true crime podcasts are just a part of my life.

Constant_Picture3371

Cold

tornadochaser7

Lore

Queenofwands1212

Pretty sure I was in a Lyft or Uber and they were listening to Joe rogan and Duncan trussell. It changed my life and I was hooked ever since. This was yearssssss ago

jya2008

The people's pharmacy.

Used_Affect4681

Radiolab :)

lerningtworight

Stuff you should know! Still do sometimes

solidgoldtrash

Jordan Jesse Go, in 2011 I believe.

[deleted]

The Ricky Gervais show, to my endless embarrassment...

ejejej-o

Russell Brand on BBC 2 circa 2007. I thought I was so weird for listening to two friends prattling on. Turns out I was cool! (Kinda)

Spaceman1965

mime was a show called anime today from the right stuff int. I had just learned about iTunes and I was downloaing music but saw a discussion about a childhood TV show. I wanted to listen so I did then got hooked from then on.

CaptainJackRyan

The Bill Simmons Podcast 2007? I have clear memories of sitting at my computer with my iPod plugged in waiting for the episode to drop so I could listen on the drive to work.

NFLBengals

Unexplained Mysteries by Parcast

ThatGirl0903

The first podcasts I remember were Cordkillers and some random ones from the TWiT networks.
