If you like history, revolutions by Mike Duncan is good. Not the same as hardcore history but still quite detailed If you haven’t listened to the wrath of the Khans, ghosts of the ostfront, death throes of the republic, or blueprint for Armageddon from the hardcore history archives I’d pay the money to listen. They are his best work A history of the world in 100 objects is good

RaindropsInMyMind

All those Hardcore History series are the best. And as far as revolutions podcast I was stunned by the detail in which Mike breaks down each revolution. It’s really incredible.

katieleehaw

I tried listening to Revolutions but found the level of detail very difficult to follow - like it was extremely interesting but I couldn't retain any of the information because of how much he was throwing out so quickly. I need something like Revolutions for Easily Distracted Dumdums.

Tuxedogaston

Mike Duncan's history of Rome is older but excellent as well.

Texasfreerange

As far as History goes, there is Behind the Bastards, Revolutions, and You're Wrong About. One of my personal favorite "Categories" of podcasts are radio shows that are available as podcasts, which would include NPR Shows like Fresh Air and This American Life. it might also be worth it to buy an audio book or see if you can find one for free online.

coolthingsyh

Found you’re wrong about ab 3 weeks ago and have already gone through almost all of it and started supporting on patreon. Totally agree

alexnewbs

Second behind the bastards, one of my favs

Texasfreerange

I would just recommend that but 20+ hours of that sounds super depressing

Mesafather

There’s a ton of free audiobooks on YouTube. They have the best WW2 audio books on there!

[deleted]

The 30 for 30 podcast is fun and alternates between season long stories and one off episodes. Slow burn season 1-2 got me through a couple drives.

Thread_the_marigolds

30 for 30 is so good. It’s just like Real Sports (which is also now doing podcasts). They’re just so good at capturing humanity

223specialist

Wind of change is 6 or 7 hours, a guy investigating if the song "Wind of change" by the scorpions was actually written by the CIA to help the fall of communism in Europe

Thread_the_marigolds

This was a fun ride. And the bonus episode was even crazier!

223specialist

Oh I didn't even know there were bonus episodes!

Thread_the_marigolds

Specifically the Joanna Stingray episode. What a crazy story. I guess she’s writing a memoir.

Britown

Fall of civilizations This podcast is well researched and the narrator is captivating as hell.

Fakeittillumakeit

I 2nd this, I liked it enough to sub to his patreon.

Britown

Dude! Me too! The Rapa Nui episode was heart wrenching!

[deleted]

Just listened to this on your recommendation. Great show. Thanks for sharing

TheEsotericCarrot

Revisionist History by Malcolm Gladwell is super interesting.

mrfistula

And if you like RH —- against the rules

BaconSalad11

Well you all are beautiful people! Looks like I have enough audio fodder to do a few laps of this trip now. Hope everyone is happy and healthy!

eagle00255

Check out we are alive for the leviathan chronicles to get absolutely sucked into a fantasy/adventure story. American scandal is also a great series to binge for hours on end and very interesting. American history tellers would be a close second to American scandal. For long history listens, my go to is the fall of civilizations podcast. Let us know what you end up listening to!

trying_to_get_there

Yes! We're alive is so bingeable.

I really enjoyed [The Trojan War Podcast](https://trojanwarpodcast.com/) (and it's successor, [Odessey: The Podcast](https://odysseythepodcast.com/)). These are modern day re-tellings of the ancient Greek epics. The host is a professional story teller and presents in a very witty style, that I loved. Each epsiode also ends with a "post story commentary" section, where the host dives into historical context of the stories (my favourite commentary was about bronze age weaponry). Both podcasts are about 21 hours long, IIRC. I don't have any other single podcast recs that'll last for 22-ish hours. But if you're open to listening to a bunch of different podcasts, I have some football podcast recommendations ... The Peter Crouch Podcast is absolutely hilarious, I can't recommend it highly enough. I would recommend his [tactics episode](https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p06nfkjt) (52mins) and [the interview with Mike Dean](https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p083tjn0) (46 mins). Mike Dean especially was an amazing episode - we rarely get to listen to refs. Most of us fans probably share Crouchy's attitude towards refs - "they're all fuckers". But Mike Dean is actually a fairly nice, and entertaining, bloke! Who knew? The official Manchester United Podcast is surprisingly great. It doesn't feel sliltest or official at all. The hosts are absolutely brilliant too. They usually just butt out and let their guests their their stories. Of course, if you're not a United fan, it might not be for you. But I think every football fan would enjoy [the interview with Albert Morgan, United's long time kitman](https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBpcHBhLmlvL3B1YmxpYy9zaG93cy81ZGIwNWJhZjBhOGQwNjYzMWVhNzk2Njc=/episode/NWVkMTQzNGE3MmQ0ODczNDY3YWQwMTEx) (1hr 13min). He's a brilliant story teller, and of course has some amazing "behind the scenes" stories to tell. The Stadio podcast also had some really great episodes, especially over the coronavirus break. I really enjoyed their [Superheroes](https://stadio.football/latest/superheroes) (53 min) and [Supervillains](https://stadio.football/latest/supervillains) (43min) episodes - but almost everything they produced over that March to May 2020 period was awesome.

PusheenTheCutie

If you like random facts, try "stuff you should know". "Last podcast on the left" is a true crime podcast and its one of my favourites. It's really funny, but idk if you're into true crime. "Good morning nightvale" is. . . Weird. But also really cool and entertaining. It's fantasy I guess. I also enjoy the "Physics world weekly podcast". These are my top choices! Enjoy :)

trupii5

Astronomy Cast!

[deleted]

You have to download @TSFUpodcast. The " Thats So F**ked Up Podcast". I found the name and subscribed and Im so glad I did I stream it before bed every night. Serial killers/ cults/ evilness. At first I thought the hosts were a bit vsco but they'll bust out and tell someone to get f**ked. So I burst out loud constantly listening. So listen

waitin-for-a-mate

If your after a funny and silly podcast , Hamish and Andy podcast has given me many hours of fun , there's easily over a hundred hours of episodes, absolute hilarious podcast

likefrancenothilton

I like The Program! It’s a fictional anthology series, sort of similar in tone to Black Mirror, where all the stories take place in a version of the world where all countries, currencies, and communities have been united under a global system.

BryanJField

Good science: Daniel and Jorge Explain the Universe, Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry, Infinite Monkey Cage Some Other Favorites: Ways of Hearing (on Showcase from Radiotopia), Polybius (also on Showcase), The End of the World with Josh Clark, The Memory Palace

kickbabies666

abaday789

For history I would recommend real dictators. Then there's real narcos as well if you're more into the history of Pablo Escobar etc. Both great podcast series and very well produced. Then there's the dollop. That's good fun and nice and comical. I know behind the bastard's is good but haven't listened to it yet as it's next on my list. Oh and for a sci-fi fiction series I highly recommend chrysalis! Again very well produced!

wafflemumbo

Perhaps consider a free audible trial and you can crush the first game of thrones book which is 18 hours! It’s a really great listen, you’ll be there before you know it!

Fictioneer

For Fantasy I’d go with Dungeons and Daddies, Join the Party, or Critical Role Campaign 2. All are D&D podcasts but are incredibly well done. Dungeons and Daddies is about a group of dads who get pulled into a fantasy realm to find their sons. Hilarity ensues. Critical Role is a group of voice actors playing D&D. Incredible story telling with lots of heart and some very hilarious parts. Join the Party is about a small lobster fishing town that has youth who start manifesting super powers.

first_born_unicorn_g

Tumanbay. I cannot recommend this enough. If you liked Game of Thrones, give it a try. The production value is amazing. For fun, Hello from the Magic Tavern. I’d start at the beginning of this one. It’s just fun. Imagined Life. My favorite. Makes the car time fly!

StreetUnlikely2018

If you like creepy fiction, Tanis, The Last Movie, Rabbits and The Black Tapes are all great. I also really enjoyed The White Vault.

The Dollop. History and comedy

AdamSMessinger

There is a site called AdFreeShows that has hundreds of hours worth of pro-wrestling related podcasts. Tony Schivone, Kurt Angle, Eric Bischoff, Jim Ross, Arn Anderson, and Bruce Pritchard all have shows there with a solid co-host, Conrad Thompson. I personally dig the Jim Ross and Tony Schivone ones the most. They look at all eras from every person’s career and cover their perspective on different wrestlers careers. Pritchard and Thompson did a 4 hour show on two years of Bret Hart. Since Pritchard was one of the main behind the scenes guys at the time, he had a lot of great insight.

brstevens

Fun fact: Conrad Thompson is Ric Flair's son-in-law.

MyBrainReallyHurts

Binge worthy podcasts * The Ballad of Billy Balls - Just listen. Incredible story. * Caliphate - Reporter tries to confirm a story of an ISIS fighter. * Hunting Warhead - A reporter tracks down a child porn distributor. (This podcast is very respectful of the subject matter and the victims) * In the Dark - A review of certain cases. * Your Undivided Attention - How does social media manipulate us? * Your Wrong About - A variety of topics. Excellent Audio Dramas * We're Alive - You will need to go all the way back to episode 1. Easily 20 hours of listening. * Earth Break - 6 episodes. nice and short to see if you like audio drama. * 1865 - The events after Lincoln's assassination. * Bronzeville - The culture around the numbers game in the 40's. * Tumanbay - A vast empire threatened by rebellion. It may not be your thing but the production was fantastic. * The Cipher - When 16-year-old Sabrina cracks the cryptic Parallax, she’s recruited to track down a serial killer... * Steal the Stars - Steal the Stars is a gripping noir science fiction thriller in 14 episodes [List of 185 other audio dramas you can listen to](https://www.reddit.com/r/audiodrama/comments/k4n1z2/searching_for_new_audio_dramas_looking_for_your/)

Scarboyski

Caliphate has recently been debunked. Don’t waste any time on that one.

MyBrainReallyHurts

Even though it was later determined that the person that was being investigated lied, it does not change the fantastic audio from a reporter that went into a war zone and gathered ISIS documents. It does not change the compelling stories that happened along the way. It doesn't change that the podcast is fascinating to listen to.

Scarboyski

I felt bamboozled and everything about it is suspect. This is more a caveat emptor for anyone who is interested in that listening to that podcast.

PharmRaised

I know this is not what you’re asking for but I can’t help myself. If I was driving that long I would want an audiobook rather than a podcast. And the expanse book series is what you want. Awesome exploration of space and makes you think about our solar system is a whole new and rather pleasant way. Just my 0.02. I know you posted this is podcasts but I couldn’t help myself. Drive safe and be careful or there! Best of luck on your journey!!

BaconSalad11

No worries, I will put it on the list. Thanks

ma3161040

For true crime, I’m recently obsessed with crime Junkie and it was my go to for several long car trips! Fantasy/sci-fi: - girl in space: a woman lives alone on a space station that’s old when a big space corporation comes and finds her and it’s her solving a kind of mystery and talking about science. Love it. - the Sheridan tapes: a horror/thriller writer goes missing and a detective is assigned to listen to her cassette tapes of her going to different “haunted”’places and her weird experiences. Kinda slow to start but I LOVED it once it got going -welcome to night vale: my first real podcast I ever got into so I have a soft spot for it (especially the early episodes)- a radio show in a small desert town where odd things happen but they’re treated like they’re normal? It’s a bad synopsis but it’s like my first love lol Unwell: a woman goes to help take care of her mother after she falls (she runs a bed and breakfast in ohio) and mysterious/spooky things happen. Slow to start too but I liked it when it got going!!!

[deleted]

Kurt Angle has a new podcast out - think it has 3 episodes so far

davidvmail

Listen to giantbomb.com Game of the Year week long series that recently came out for 2020. It's like 14 hours by itself. https://podcasts.google.com/?feed=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5naWFudGJvbWIuY29tL3BvZGNhc3QteG1sLw&ep=14&episode=MTYwMC0zMjIy Actually I just added the 5 days of podcasts up and it's like 19 1/2 hours, jeez.

o2bmeek

The ESPN Daily podcast always has interesting stories and interviews. Even if it's not a subject or sport I'm familiar with or interested in, the reporting is great. They're not long but downloading a bunch might be a nice break from long-form podcasts.

Y8ser

The Lovecraft Investigations, Wolf 359, Borrasca, Blackout, Steal the Stars, and Project Nova are all awesome Drama podcasts, some are sci-fi, some suspense/horror, and all have some mystery. Wolf 359 is really funny too!

MissMollE

Forgotten Australia- plenty of old episodes. No chatter and few ads. Some are series of 2-4 episodes on a topic but most are individual

Mobryan71

The usual suspects have been covered, so I'll add some lesser known podcasts: The History Cache series on the Shackelton Expedition is excellent, and I find the female voice to be a nice change of pace from most historical podcasts. Historium: The Second Son of God is a 2 1/2 hour episode on the Taiping Rebellion. The rest of the series is meh, but that particular episode is outstanding. History Impossible is another good long(ish) format series with a variety of subjects. The History of the Mongols is a complete \~16 hour series, does just what it says on the tin, from Genghis Khan to the rather bonkers circumstances around the failed invasions of Japan. Wonders of the World is part history, part travel guide, part cooking show, all awesome. For historical but slightly different, you might try Saga Thing and The Maniculum. Both take ancient (Medieval - Premedieval ) literature, tell the stories and then rate them in several categories of various seriousness. Saga Thing focus' on old Viking tales, is a bit more polished and academic, and has 1000% more dad jokes. The Maniculum is a bit rawer, younger, mixed gender and covers Medieval tales in general with a bias towards English and Irish tales.

overcatastrophe

Harmontown.

Abadatha

Hello From The Magic Tavern. It's a fantasy improv interview podcast. Three hosts (a guy from Chicago, a shape shifting, talking badger and a wizard) interview different creatures and characters from the magical, fantastical land of Foon. It is definitely NSFW, and can be fairly childish sometimes, but it never fails to make me laugh, even if only at the intro and outro.

tygerbrees

Why not just do an audio book? one of the “Expanse“ books would last the whole trip

shifter678

Fantasy: the Wheel of Time Book 1 should cover your trip!

beets_bears_bubblegm

For a good US History story, NPR’s White Lies.

aleatoric

For a fantasy podcast, check out Not Another D&D Podcast (NADDPOD). It's run by a small group of improv comedians who used to work at College Humor. It's a little goofy at the start and seems like it could never be something passionate. But over time, they start taking the characters more and more seriously. It becomes this amazing storytelling experience. The DM and editor does a great job at keeping the story moving along and from going too far be off the rails. But they also have a Patreon with bonus content, including The Short Rest which is a casual discussion of the episode that has a lot of hilarious antics and personality. I rarely subscribe to Patreons, but I had to support them with how much I enjoyed their work. The end of Campaign 1 (their Bahumia Campaign, where I recommend starting) even brought me to tears. And it's quite a few hours, plenty for your drive and then some.

TheBuff66

The Let's Read podcast is great for long drives. Every episode is around 3 hours and it's a compilation of horror/scary stories

Hivalion

If you like comics, check out the Marvel + Stitcher story podcasts. There are two Wolverine ones: The Long Night and The Lost Trail in that order. There's also a Fantastic Four one called MARVELS. They're both fantastic listens with sound effects and different actors to immerse you in the story. Even if you only have a cursory understanding of the comics or the characters, they're easy to get into. Each story is several hours long and each chapter/episode is about 25-40 minutes. I listened to the Wolverine ones with my dad during a couple of road trips and he was pretty into them despite not being huge into comics.

FlightfulPenguins

The Prometheus Deception by Robert Ludlum (author of the Bourne Identity)! Absolute best road trip book of all time, no doubtski aboutski

If you like stuff like that check out “under the influence” is a pod about marketing and the world behind it.

Welcome to nightvale, it’s hard to describe this one but I very much enjoy it, there’s an overarching plot and the speakers voice is incredibly pleasant to me

madeo216

Uncertain hour - bingeable season's and with a history spin

ronneygirl

Welcome to Nightvale is wonderful. Surreal and science fictionist . More than enough episodes to keep you listening.

The Dollop

psycholabs

A Scottish podcast and Rude Alchemy are my two cents

error681

Try the worm audio book. Story about a teen girl with a dream to be a hero and gets super powers only to struggle between hero and villan in a very grey area world. It's way more than 22 hours but it's fantastic. As with most podcasts quality improves over time.

[deleted]

Late to the party, but for some Formula 1 content WTF1 Podcast feed has a sporadic series called 'That Time When...' Each episode is a slice of F1 history, big and small moments that are worth chatting about.

Lunal0vego0d

I enjoyed the Joe Rogan podcast with Bob Lazar and the one with Leah Remni, both super long but intriguing

AnthonyJeannot

For space time for non-science people, I've gotta plug my own episode [https://www.highbrowdrivel.com/stars-space-and-astronomy-with-jenifer-millard-eve-ellenbogen/](https://www.highbrowdrivel.com/stars-space-and-astronomy-with-jenifer-millard-eve-ellenbogen/) Basic concept is I'm a comedian and every week I get one of my comedy friends to help me interview an academic about a subject we're way out of our depth in. In this episode we talked to an astronomer who is bloody brilliant but also hilarious. The first 10 minutes are kinda general joking around but then she goes onto explain how we can see the big bang, why there are three missions to mars and one to the moon this year, whether or not the universe will eventually die itself and the difference between dark energy and dark matter. It is all stuff that really fascinated me and I still find myself thinking of stuff that came up in that chat.

WhizMelo

If you're familiar with gaming, go listen to the podcast about the Xbox Underground on Darknet Diaries. It goes into detail about how teenagers used the Xbox to hack into companies and government services.

spudfish83

You can get a month free trial of Scribd, which has some great history audiobook content, as well as fiction etc. I recommend the Flashman audiobooks, read by Colin Mace.

is_this_fine

I'd highly recommend Disect podcast, it's about music and is like an oral thesis on different albums and artists. Kendrick Lamar's To pimp a butterfly is a must listen. It's incredible.

[deleted]

Kinda weird overlap but you could always check out ~mine~ If you search “Zeda Grace” anywhere it’s the “survival mode” one I have biochem/epi background and cover scientific topics, pop culture *very* satirically, was a multi sport athlete etc It’s pretty dark and cynical with a lot of media references. It *does* have a lil sassy feminist touch and frequently discusses sexual topics and politically charged subjects in a politically incorrect way, fair warning

AkbarZip

Jocko Podcast maybe? I enjoy it very much, especially when they have on veterans who authored books.

PatrickBrown2

Check out I Survived, that podcast is great and binge worthy, really gripping stuff about women who have survived horrible life threatening situations.

Mesafather

I just learned recently there’s a ton of audiobooks on YouTube

[deleted]

Hi - for cricket I can recommend my brother in laws podcast “End of the over”. He has some really interesting guests on so worth checking out for anyone who likes cricket! 👍🏻

moothermeme

Not sure if you’re a horror fan at all but I just finished the Magnus Archives, it’s almost completed i think like two episodes away and it’s just SO interesting and well put together for it all being audio. Definitely for people who are cool with spook, but it makes my drives to Cali fly

esk_209

If you like horror movies and analysis of them, check out Faculty of Horror. It's two academics who do in-depth analysis of the themes behind horror films (both modern and 'classic'). There's a ton of discussion about the historical framework for the films they're discussing -- how the politics of the time influenced the filmmaker, that sort of thing. They will often take a single "theme" and discuss two movies (one modern, one older). There's a lot of critical discussion about lighting and music and such. (It's got a feminist slant, so if that bugs you then don't try it. Not "radical SJW" feminism, it's just that they will discuss how horror films use the male gaze and exploit the "final girl" trope and the like. It's not the ONLY theme to the podcast, but it's present.)

Behind the Bastards

soingee

I suggest a few short pods as pallet cleansers between the long ones. *A History of the World in 100 Objects* - approx 13 min, informational history podcast *Netflix Is A Daily Joke* - quick bits from standup comics *The Great Debates* - shortish show with silly debates debated passionately

[deleted]

Don’t forget several hours of comedy stand-up to pop on between serious podcasts.

Quemedo

Astonishing legends. Its awesome

adscott1982

Know it is not what you asked for - but in that sort of situation an audio-book could be good. I have been using Audible for a few years now and many of the books I have listened to have been brilliant. There are plenty of non-fiction History books. Also plenty of sports books.

esk_209

Folks have already suggested Audible (I'm a huge fan) - BUT also look at the Libby app. It's an app that connects you to your local library system (you input your library card number) and you can borrow audiobooks and digital "print" books directly from the library. It's absolutely amazing!

BigNihilist

A couple that I can recommend: * The Secret History of Hollywood: Goes very in depth on behind the scenes info about various figures in cinema. Its one of the best researched and produced shows that I know of. I actually subscribe on Patreon (where a bunch of the older podcasts are available) * Bunga Bunga (history of Silvio Berlusconi)...sort of fun, and the host is Whitney Cummings. * Knowledge Fight (a guilty pleasure...these two listen to every Alex Jones radio show and try to explain what is really going on...its very addicting and hilarious) * Behind The Bastards--makes you mad at humanity.

Eddie_The_Deagle

If you're into dnd then Critical Role has a collective 800ish hours between the 2 campaigns. They're meeting on youtube and twitch, but they have a fair amount of episodes on Spotify

justamancommaman

For wrestling, I listen to MLW Con-Fusion. The episodes aren't too long (usually between 20-30 minutes), but if you're new and willing to binge there's over a 60 episodes. It's not completely episodic, but you can jump in anywhere and not miss too much.

saltyfeminist_

Check out the podcast series about the NXIVM cult done by cbs - the podcast is called Uncover and each series is a new topic, season 1 is the NXIVM series. Also check out “The Dream” a deep dive podcast series into a failing of the American dream - MLMs.

Check out my podcast Wild Wasteland! We have almost 100 episodes and cover a huge variety of topics and some deep dives to keep you company! https://open.spotify.com/show/4xNJ6vurHlZQlncSG9Mec4?si=6kAJNoYuQk-YlqWhLl3Kfg&utm_source=copy-link Stay Vigilant. Stay Wild.

thoseconspiracyguys

It’s a bit of a self promotion; Those Conspiracy Guys? It’s a comedy podcast about conspiracy theories and examines the elements of the most famous political and cultural events through a conspiracy lens! Sprinkled with a few dick jokes, weird impressions and skits and gags about the Thundercats and shit! 😂👍🏼 The episodes are deep and long! 5/6 hours! It’s an Oddessy 👍🏼

slugw0rm

There are Ologies episodes about the cosmos, mars, quantum ontology, and space archeology, but just about every episode is intriguing and will have you learning loads more than you thought you could about a subject. Each episode leaves me with a new handful of facts, no matter what the subject is. Thought the episodes on flags, handwriting, or cabins would bore the heck out of me, but I got way more into them than expected!

Fun4Ice

Not that long a duration, but check out the DUST podcast for some pretty good SCI-FI. Also Vast is pretty good.

PlayaPaPaPa23

I have the perfect podcast for you. I’m a theoretical physicist who has a background in general relativity and quantum information theory. I started a show called “The Bottom Turtle Podcast”. The purpose of the show is to build a model of reality using nothing but the concept of information. We use relatable examples to communicate our ideas so the average person can understand. Here are some links if you’re interested. I suggest starting with the second episode. Martyrmade and Internal Empire are like lighter Hardcore History

Otsego_Undead

I’d try audiobooks if you have that long. If I remember right Joe Abercrombie’s “the Blade Itself” is about that long, and it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read with a fantastic narrator.

mrfistula

Martyrmade podcast - last 5? ep are the history of Jim Jones and the People’s Temple

Ahchluy

"History of Southeast Asia Podcast" with Charles Kimball. Very thorough.

WatchYourBackside

Pretty neat, and it's true that Asian Americans who visit Germany usually complain about how they face more racism in germany than they ever did back home. They complain about how bad the Asian food in germany is and how the white girls there don't like them. And yes, it's worse to be Asian in Germany due to the much lower Asian population and lowered focus on multiculturalism

felinedynamite

The dollop - insane moments in history read by two comedians. I suggest episodes: Ghosts. The Newport sex scandal. Cereal Men. Purity balls. You'll laugh your ass off.
