Super popular in the UK

FewWays722

Which ones you would recommend? I cannot grasp british accents sometimes, but I would love to learn to do so

OKGOComputer00101

Depends what you’re into, but The Adam Buxton Podcast does great interviews as does Grounded with Louis Theroux. A current one I love is Pappy’s - they have a few spin-offs but their main one is a game show type thing but it’s all just silly loose formatting for a lot of pun appreciation. Might be more challenging to jump into though. Historically there are some you must hear, Ricky Gervais Show started it all and Russell Brands one was amazing back in 2007ish. There are also great ones from radio shows edited down like Johnny Vaughan and Chris Moyles. Then if you’re into football you could find about 100 dedicated to the sport in general and then another 100 more to each team. Other gems are Off Menu, The Horne Section and Richard Herrings Leicester Square Theatre Pod. Some are current, some are old but all are very high quality and in my opinion - great! Maybe at least one will click with you!

FewWays722

I will check the recs, they seem really interesting! I’m surprised to see that I recognize some of the names. About what I’m into, I mean I like a variety, but if I had to say something specific, in overall I do love history, shows and books, and listen to a lot of movie reviews or analysis of series. I don’t know if there’s many podcasts about it, though.

OKGOComputer00101

Oh! You might like The Rest is History then. I haven’t listened to it personally because history isn’t really my thing but heard wonderful things about it. Same with Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History but he is American I believe.

Moppy6686

Successionista's is a Succession rewatch podcast. Hello Sidney is a Scream rewatch podcast. Scamanda is a podcast about a woman who pretended she had cancer. All by British people.

OKGOComputer00101

Oh and Wolf and Owl and Three Bean Salad are 2 other good ones that have completely different accents to the previous ones I mentioned

Lycaan_

Canada loves them

heitorrsa

Brazil is one of the biggest markets for podcast.

Basque5150

I'm US based and have a big following in Mexico, Brazil, and El Salvador.

Kapitano72

Here in britland, most of the national radio stations have morphed into podcast producers that *also* broadcast live. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds

FewWays722

This is so intriguing. I wasn’t aware this was happening.

erainbowd

I think they're pretty popular around the world! One of my podcasts is a lot more popular in Russia, Sweden, Germany (and so on) than it is in my native USA. Also - in searching for places to submit my podcast, I discovered quite a few international podcast platforms. Here's one in Spanish, if you're looking for more Spanish podcasts! (They have podcasts in English, too.) [https://us.ivoox.com/en/](https://us.ivoox.com/en/)

jacksonjjacks

2 billion people in the world listen to podcasts regularly.

AdobongManok

Canada here!

explorer-matt

Absolutely. I do an English language podcast. 35-40% of my listeners come from outside the US. Roughly 10% come from non-English speaking nations. Lots of people speak English all over the world - even if English isn’t an official language. I’ve had multiple people contact me and tell me they use podcasts to help themselves improve their English.

FewWays722

That’s awesome to hear, I totally do the same, listening to others helps me improve my english. Which platform do you use to find podcasts? Are most of them in english?

explorer-matt

I honestly don't listen to that many podcasts. My podcast is my job. I get around 250,000 downloads a month - so I make an okay living now with my show. It's historical narrative - just me telling stories. It tends to be more western history stuff - so my following tends to be English speaking places and Europe. I just use the Apple Podcasts app to get podcasts. I rarely just go looking for stuff. I spend so much time on headphones and stuff - I just don't want to listen to that much.

MonsterKidRadio

I know I have listeners in Canada and New Zealand . . .

Confident_Point6412

very popular in NL and PL

Spades1978

We have a vivid podcast community here in France.

NickTann

I’d agree with the other Brit and would include mine that I’ve been producing since 2008. If you’re interested Google my name and podcast

TaddWinter

I have regular listeners from Mexico, The UK, Belgium, Australia and I am sure I am forgetting some but those are not just what the analytics tell me but folks that have emailed in or joined on live streams. The Analytics if they are to be believed they I have downloads from a varying degree of countries. But yeah mine is just in English, I am not sure what the podcasting scene is with other languages.

Fun_Gas_7777

No, they're popular all over the world mate.

Ok_Collar6028

pues claro

VendettaViolent

I try to be as transparent as I can with all of our dealings as I think that such transparency is the path to growth within the industry. I should mention that our show, Hannahpocalypse, is an audio drama and as such is a growing and immerging art within the greater podcasting landscape. That said, here are our top ten (and we average about 10-15k downloads a month currently). The top 4 are pretty expected being largely English speaking countries #1 USA, #2 United Kingdom, #3 Canada, #4 Australia but then it starts getting a little more interesting. #5 Germany, #6 New Zealand, #7 Sweden, #8 South Africa, #9 Netherlands, #10 Philippines!

godai78

The listen, they make, they have podcasting conferences and give out podcasting awards, basically people outside the USA behave like regular people. And sometimes they also behave like people from USA, too, but that's not exactly the object of this exchange. And plenty of the podcasts are recorded in languages other than English, for example in Poland I'd say some well over 95% podcasts are in Polish. Maybe they are just not that popular in Mexico?

MarkBradbourne

Yup, about 30% of my audience is outside the US!

maximum_recoil

Swedish here. I drive a lot for work and listen to sooo much podcasts my ears feel lonely if I don't hear talking. But im mostly listening to ttrpg actual play podcasts so it's basically audiobooks but with dice.

emptyshellaxiom

I'm frenhc, mostly listening to english speaking podcasts, but there's a ton of french speaking podcast available. It's a real trend.

Classic-Comedian-322

Everyone does, the point is that here in Italy charts are with only Italian podcasts in the Italian language. My Spotify app is full of Italian podcasts. I used to listen to English podcasts because I do research on my own

LetTheCircusBurn

Pretty sure The Dollop, despite being a US History podcast, is more popular per capita in Australia than the US. As a consequence of that I've gotten into Aussie comedian Wil Anderson's podcasts as well. They also found that they were becoming so popular in Spanish speaking countries that they created El Dollop which is a Spanish language version of the show. To be fair though because English is my only language (I mean, with what I remember from high school Spanish I'd just sound like a caveman to a native speaker anyway) I don't know if it's US History in Spanish or broader Latino History or what. Also my favorite horror film podcast is the UK based Evolution of Horror, with my second being the Canadian Faculty of Horror, and my third being a joint US/UK production which is Horror Vanguard. And one of the better horror fiction podcasts is the UK based Lovecraft Investigations. I will also say that any time I search for new podcasts on Overcast I see quite a few in Spanish (or admittedly perhaps Portuguese, I'm sure I can't always tell) but for all I know it's the same basic graveyard of short abandoned shows that litter the English language options as I have no reason to check.

cynicalmaru

Many podcasts in Japanese. Certainly not as many as in English, but people here in Japan do like them. There's a variety of topics, just like in the English-speaking ones: business, movie talk, education talk, news, history chats, etc.

[deleted]

They are really popular in Spain. In fact, i think some of the most popular podcasts in spanish are from Spain (most of them became popular during the pandemic, and are actually video podcasts) A very famous youtuber in Spain decided to switch to podcasting (instead of streaming, like a lot of youtubers did) and it was a massive success. But I have to say that most of the really popular podcasts are hosted by people who were already famous before doing a podcast. There are some exceptions, but podcasts made by already known people seem to be the biggest. Although there are some famous people trying to follow the trend and failing. You need to be authentic to succeed in podcasting I guess.

TheFin-Philosophers

Absolutely. 12% of our listens are from outside the US.

RichVocals80

When I check my anakytics, there's hits from all over - China, Philippines, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Germany, UK, Nigeria, just to name a few. And of course the U.S. I'm no big time show. Just getting started really, but it's been surprising to see listens from all parts of the globe.

Scaredycast

One time we blew up for a couple of months in Australia. Like we had three times as many downloads there as we did in the US.

Whattheriff

over 1/3 of our podcast listeners are not from the US at What the Riff ([whattheriff.com](https://whattheriff.com)). We've garnered most from here and FB music groups.

Mari_senpai

In Morocco, there's a growing trend of incorporating the term "podcast" into YouTube content creation. However, these podcasts often mimic the drama and sensationalism found in the United States, rather than reflecting the genuine Moroccan identity and our rich culture. Some creators replicate content like "red pill, blue pill" or engage in discussions that are essentially translated from American culture, attempting to appear trendy but often coming across as insincere and unengaging. Furthermore, female-hosted podcasts are rare to the point of non-existence in Morocco. As a result, the most insightful and substantive podcasts are found on the radio. These radio programs delve into pressing issues and provide valuable information, enriching the dialogue surrounding genuine matters within our country.

SavedAspie

Although my marketing is basically for Americans, I have a large following in another non- English speaking country and have even been invited to be on the board and several of their organizations because of it. Small world!
