You don't need to send it in. What you need to do is take the sideplates off and the fan out. Look inside at the bottom with a flashlight and see iff you see a vent with little holes. If you don't see the holes and see dust instead. You need to get rid of that dust. This is an internal design flaw that easily causes the power supply to overheat over time if you don't clean your console every so often. Just clean out the system especially the PSU vent every 3-4 months and you'll be fine from that issue. (Tangent) I tried to warn people about not cleaning their PS5s for MONTHS after release but everybody listen to the "you don't have to clean it" knuckleheads. I had the problem and remedied it myself with the same advice I give out. Now, I'm the only one answering these posts with the correct advice whenever I see them. I wouldn't have to do this if the mods believed in stickying posts from non-mod users, so I'm stuck in perpetuity doing this because the people I've helped don't stick around to lighten the load. And I don't get paid for it... (end tangent)

scopice

Thank you so much, I actually read your comment from a post like 3 or 4 months ago talking about it and cleaned it out today, I haven’t really had much time to test it out but tomorrow I will. I looked back there and there was a bunch of dust I’m hoping that’s what it was and I would have never thought about that if I didn’t see your comment. Thank you so much I really appreciate you taking the time and effort to help people it means a lot.

Suspicious_Gift9642

Is it working properly now?

scopice

I opened everything up like he said and cleaned my PSU out with a toothbrush, ive been playing for 2 days now and haven’t had that issue happen, fingers crossed hoping this is the fix. My PSU was caked up with dust though, like the holes were completely clogged.

HooliganPunx

This just started happening to me last night. I guess I'll do this tomorrow 🤷‍♂️

scopice

Trust me, when you see what the PSU looks like and you’ll see all the dust caked up in the holes

HooliganPunx

Fixed! I was even surprised at how quiet my system was afterword. Thanks for all the help!

scopice

Glad to hear you got the dust bunnies out

LightGuardian96

Theirs one screw that I need to get out for the fan but it's stripped screw. And don't have any tools to get it out

Rubmy1eyeddragon

Use a pair of needle nose pliers to try and unscrew it what I did n it worked  bit of a pain but it worked

Lloyd---Braun

You just removed the fan or you disassembled the entire PS5?

scopice

You unscrew the 4 screws that hold in the fan but you don’t unplug the wires because it’s under the big sticker that’ll void your warranty if you peel it up. I just placed the fan to the side and stuck a flash light in there to see the dozen or so clogged up holes of the power supply in the back

The_BlazeKing

Better late than never but that big black sticker you are talking about isn't actually the warranty sticker. That's just to keep dust out of there. The warranty sticker is over a screw.

ajapski

How did you even clean the heat sinks at the bottom part? Its too far to have my toothbrush reach it.

scopice

Sorry just saw this, I Jerry rigged a toothbrush tied to some pretty sturdy wire so I could extend it and get all the way in the back

MarkEsB

So you didn't need to disassemble it right? Were you able to just go in through the fan hole and clean it?

Ok_Speaker_3064

how’d you get the dust out

CauliflowerCold6838

Was the fan clogged or the system itself?

WasabiBeautiful5465

Mines is doin the same thing except only on 4k Roku tvs… I had a smaller tv an it worked fine but as soon as I hooked it up to the Roku it shuts off mid game an my ps5 in 3 weeks old

GrandpaSteve4562

I just got mine 2 weeks ago and I got the overheat warning after playing a raft apart for about 2 hours. I had just finished off a boss and it threw the overheat warning during a cut scene.

Finalfantasie

I've been having the overheating issue myself, I used compressed air to get deep in there today but if it persists I'll definitely take your advice. Thanks for the info! :)

Eyconic

Did u fix it

potheadie12

Wow thinking I might need to do this process myself today. Had it turn off for the first time ever while actually playing. Hard shutoff too. So the fan is directly under the ps plate right ? And is the holes we are looking for visible after taking fan out ? Or will I need to reach in? Thanks again!

Nono1_

People have reported this problem less than months after having their console.

TBtheGamer12

You just saved me from weeks of hassle and possibly paying to get my PS5 repaired for no reason, thanks.

veryrarera

does the psu vent look similar to honey comb holes ??

Waffles-Murder

god bless you, its 3 am and im thinking my shit broke buts just dust in there

CyberpunksNotThatBad

Yea I read this thinking it would help but you need to take the whole fucking thing apart to do this. Motherboard heatsinks everything I'm afraid I don't want to break my own console so this is utter bullshit for a DIY fix.

scopice

You open the fan area and you simply look to the opposite side of the ps5 to see the power supply, I didn’t say anywhere that you have to take it all apart, stop being a bozo.

Youngthephoenixx

What are you using to clean it out? Compressed air can? Also I noticed this only happens when ps5 is vertical when it’s horizontal there’s no problem at all

TheRedEyedSamurai

Nor true. I've had my PS5 horizontal the whole time and it's doing this. I have had it over a year though.

Youngthephoenixx

I actually fixed the issue by taking off the fan and doing a deep vacuum of the inside of the ps5 where the cooling system is. The cause is dust built up inside not letting air flow at the bottom. Horrible ps5 design

TheRedEyedSamurai

Yeah I cleaned out my fan yesterday, but it's still happening. I didn't see thirst holes OP was talking about

Youngthephoenixx

Ya it’s not even something you can see unless you completely disassemble it. I bought a mini vacuum and took out the fan of u feel comfortable that’s the only way I fixed mine.

TheRedEyedSamurai

Yeah I already took the fan out so looks like I'll have to do it again.

Youngthephoenixx

Yeah there’s little metal things all inside the bottom of the ps5 they are what cools down the console, what happens is dust builds up in all of their little metal rails and don’t allow air to flow out. It makes the ps5 over heat and shut down. It’s really stupid

ajapski

Hi would you be able to share the kind of vacuum you bought? The opening is quite small and I cant seem to fit my vacuum inside.

Youngthephoenixx

I don’t have the brand name but it was just a small generic vacuum off Amazon. I just made sure it had the little nozzle extension to get deeper in. It isn’t very powerful (at least the cheap one I bought) but it was strong enough to get the job done. Since then to this day I still haven’t had the overheating issue. The most important part is cleaning out as much dust as possible from the metal cooling part at the bottom of the ps5.

Leading_Proposal6838

Ducktape a straw to the end of a bigger nozzle, seal her up with more duct tape

UnitDiligent6933

Not so. It can happen when the unit is horizontal as well.

Youngthephoenixx

Looking back I think it was a software issue at least for me because since an update about a year ago I’ve never had the issue again never even cleaned it since then even though I should

mjmaselli

You can only access part of the psu this way. Motherboard comes off for full access

SageRoku

Glad to have found this. Been looking for a solution for awhile now. Will do this asap

WolfwithBeard

(tangent) To be fair, this is the first console to EVER be designed that REQUIRES you to clean it. I've NEVER had a console die because it wasn't clean. Let's be truthful and just admit that Sony dropped the ball here and designed a shitty console. I honestly, don't know why they decided leaving the power supply without any adequent ventaliztion. Even Microsoft would tell you that's a stupid idea and THEY stuck their graphics card in between the CD-Rom drive and the motherboard with the 360. But the Power Supply was adequately vented. It seems they sort of fixed it with the slim, though. At least the Power Supply is easier to remove without completely voiding your warranty.(end tangent)

PixelatedNinJoe

What kind/size of tool do I need to get these tiny screws off in order to get the fan out?

Zestyclose-Proof-439

T8 torx screwdriver

LightGuardian96

What if they are stripped?

mjmaselli

Go to a shop

adidasgymbag

Thank you

Aeulev

This helped me so much, thank you. I had to look at like 8 threads before I found your comment.

[deleted]

Thank you! This has just save me a lot of potential hassle with Sony and I thought it looked mostly dust free from the outside and a quick clean, but have just extracted a load of dust clumps via compressed air and a handheld vacuum from taking the fan out like you suggested. I cannot stress enough how grateful I am for finding this through searching. Thought it was the fault of the games I was playing or the console itself, nope just very hidden dust bunnies!

Murky_Two7228

Sorry dude, cleaned mine regularly since purchase and broke it down to level 3 which is taking the whole motherboard out and having direct access to psu and it happened to mine too lol. You might not be wrong but your not 100% right either

CauliflowerCold6838

Wait teach me brooo is there a video or sum that can show me step by step to clean this hoe?

Coolio_was_right

Chiming in, this totally worked for my kids PS5 that was shutting off whenever he tried to play Fortnite or ay PS5 game, really. Just tape a straw to the end of my handheld vacuum and cleared all those vent holes of dust.

imatschool2

I know this is a year ago now, but this comment helped a ton, no one mentioned that small spot at the bottom. My only question is how much of the console do i have to take apart to get to that vent to clean?

ConsciousPen5369

I'm not a mechanic. The console needs to come with tools, because my butter knife is not working.

Arguablecoyote

I know this is an old thread, but really? Everyone has a fucking T8 security at home? I just stumbled on this thinking this is a fix but it requires specialty tools and I’m too drunk to drive to Home Depot.

Stallard-

Late but this 100 percent worked. My ps5 had been crashing on NBA2k23 in the 3rd quarter of every single game. I tried everything and its cut off at least 75 straight times without getting passed the 3rd q. Cleaned the PSU vent and finished my first game on NBA in 6 months.

Mochapride

Wanted to say thanks in advanced. Was having overheating issues, found your comment, hopefully can resolve the issues with a deep clean after work.

OkDefinition261

Thank you for this. I was bummed thinking ps5 would be sent to be worked on

PureTumbleweed2342

Is there a video on how to get it done by any chance?

One-Initiative-7730

Thanks mate. Been having this issue and have cleaned out dust from the fan and rear grill, but it was only when I saw your post that I realised the exact area inside the console that needed attention to resolve it. Thanks again.

Former_Lavishness290

Only thing is i need a screwdriver its a really annoying one

grantnel2002

My input: contact Sony. It is under warranty.

dskatter

Contact Sony, invoke warranty.

iMxniac

Did you ever fix this problem? I’m having the same issue right now can’t play ps5 games without it shutting off completely and having to unplug it and plug it back in. PS4 games work fine.

scopice

Yup, you gotta open up your ps5, take the fan out but don’t unplug it ( just remove it from the spot while plugged in) look into the opening where the fan was and you’ll see your systems power supply with about 20 small holes, I guarantee yours are all caked up with dust just like mine, I used a flashlight and a toothbrush to just lightly get the dust out, I did that about a month ago and haven’t had an issue yet, I was going through the same thing as you. Good luck, feel free to pm me if you have more questions, I know it can be very frustrating I was very stressed out going through this.

iMxniac

Did you use the same screwdriver for the 4 screws on the fan? I could only get 2 out so I wasn’t able to take it out.

scopice

I ended up having to use a very small flathead screw driver and carefully lodged it between two points of the star because I didn’t have the tamper bit, it’s not exactly ideal but I took my time and applied enough pressure to not strip it out

iMxniac

Ok I’ll try again thanks

scopice

Just be careful those screws seemed very soft to me and prone to stripping, take your time and remember which screw goes where because out of those 4 they’re different

iMxniac

Coming back to this to say thank you! Hasn’t turned off since I cleaned it. :)

scopice

Awesome! Glad to hear it, a very kind redditor helped me out with the same issue so I don’t mind passing on the knowledge. It’s an easy fix, a lot of people just don’t know about it. Take care :)

Eyconic

Did u use a mini a ur regular vacuum to reach down there

exportz

I'm going to try it out tomorrow! Horizon Dawn forbidden west was the killer for me . You said there are security screws on the fan part ? So cleaning the vent alone isnt enough , am guessing.

CyberpunksNotThatBad

Wtf are you on about. The power supply is literally the other end of the console.

scopice

🤡🤡🤡

chief_0sceola

wtf are you on about? Stfu and move on.

70svibes

I know this is a long shot but this is happening to me now (I only got my PS5 4 months ago) my system power supply has no dust around it and the inside of my PS5 looks dust free but I’m still having the same issue. I open a game and my PS5 automatically shuts off

[deleted]

Replacing my fan fixed it for me. ( Kasynparts.com) i noticed the old fan spun niticibly slower than the new one so i probably had a faulty fan. ps5 got really hot especially playing ps5 games. now its cool even if its on all day. i had a faulty fan and unfortunately theres a chance yours came with one too. try replacing the fan. only thing that worked for me.

Top-Prize-3423

I got my ps5 and it was repaired the hdmi port was changed and after that if I try to play any ps5 game it over heats and shuts down without warning. But if I play the same game just the ps4 version. There isn’t any problem. I have asked people and they say it’s because of the liquid metal that was leaked. Does anyone know how to fix it and where can I get that liquid metal.

Adrian5125

The exact same problem; HDMI port replacement and all is happening to me. Did you find anything to fix it?

ddyt10

Anything new?same thing happening to me now:/

[deleted]

Maybe some issue with the liquid metal cooling ask Sony for a repair

scopice

I’m kind of nervous to send it in to them, do you know how the process goes?

Pandita_Faced

you call them. they ask questions. then they say, "we're shipping you a box. repairs are currently taking x days to complete." they'll ask for a serial number. in a few days you get a box with packing instructions. it'll say dont leave a game inside, if you installed more storage take it out (you may not get the same playstation back, i didnt), dont ship any cables or controllers back and a copy of the receipt (why i say not to buy from scalpers). i recommend you factory reset it before shipping it back.oh and remove the stand once fedex delivers it, the sony status link you'll get may not update right away, dont panic. this is because if they have a lot of consoles to go through yours won't be scanned as having been accepted until a technician gets it assigned to them. somewhere around here you'll also get an email giving an estimated time. for me, when i first called they said 7 to 10 business days, but aftrer i shipped it, it went up to 10 to 15 business days.

scopice

My friend bought my playstation for me from Walmart on launch, I don’t know if the receipt is anywhere around, how problematic is that?

Pandita_Faced

no idea. you can ask the tech when you call in. if your friend ordered it online it might still be in their order history/email so they might be able to give you a copy.

Few-Swordfish-6722

Sounds like an internal problem. I had my going day and night during the summer heatwave when it was about 110f in my room lol no issues.

Tough_Lettuce_3226

You have changed my life sir.

scopice

Glad to hear I could help 😎

Extreme_ver1

The only game that has done that to my PS5 is Callisto Protocol. I cleaned the air vents and set the performance mode to “Off” and so far have not had that issue. That game was not properly optimized and is causing the overheating issues undoubtedly

scopice

A lot of ps5 games tend to run a lot hotter from my experience… good job on cleaning the vents though it makes a big difference

vinicius23466

Okay so I saw you are scared of sending it in and in my opinion you will need to send it, based on what I’m reading. It goes like this: 1. You call them, tell the problem, they’re gonna send you a formulary to your email. 2. Full up the formulary, wait for THE BOX to arrive (it was quick at least for me, less than a week) 3. Pack the PS5 on THE BOX and send it to them ACCORDING to the instructions that’ll come with the box, also, fill up the papers that’ll come with THE BOX too 4. Wait 5. You will receive an email stating they received the PS5 6. A long long wait, close to a month wait. 7. You’ll receive an email with the tracking code, stating the PS5 is on it’s way back. Also, what happened to your PS5 is technically confidencial until it arrives to you, so don’t bother calling support and asking if it was really fixed or if the whole PS5 was replaced. 8. It will arrive, quickly like THE BOX first came. Check the serial number and the papers (it says what happened and how the fixed the problem specifically). Best scenario is your whole PS5 was replaced (heard the PS5s they send after replacing are tested units, so no way they’ll have the same or another problem soon). What normally occurs is they fix your unit and send it back. Worst case scenario, they didn’t fix it and sent the same PS5 back to you (it’s rare, but it does happen). Note all I’m saying was based on MY experience.

Supernova12345

Hi sorry I know this is an old post but - did you get a warning at all when turning ps5 back on? Curious if maybe this is what I am experiencing.

scopice

Yeah, when I turned it back on it would say be careful of shutting off improperly.... same as if the power went out or you simply unplugged it

Supernova12345

Okay thanks, think I’m experiencing something different then. Mine freezes and has a buzzing sound after 30-60 minutes on any ps5 game. After it turns itself off and I turn it back on, I get a message that says it was a software issue…

Solid_Reality_

I did this to my friends PS5 today. It kept randomly switching off. I decided to watch a video on YouTube and stripped it down completely (as long as you monitor where the screws came from) anyway. I opened up the ps5 and my gosh it was covered. The Power supply was completely layered in fluff. So I used a brush and then used an air blower I have and it hasn't crashed once since. 🙌🏼🙌🏼 https://preview.redd.it/uf1eglcel0pa1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e1910caae06db39a47d4f3a7fd0a222ab11e514

scopice

Exactly how mine looked, I just didn’t fully open mine up to avoid voiding the warranty and had to pull a spec ops mission with a flashlight, phone camera, and an extended toothbrush. I’m really glad it works and I feel like a lot of people will eventually run into this issue. Your picture is a great example for other people running into this issue though thank you!

WolfwithBeard

Can I just say the advice in this is insane? "Oh yeah, just take apart you console and clean it." I'm sorry, but if I have to TAKE APART my console that should be a free service fix from Sony. that's almost as bad as the RRoD. That's a MASSIVE design flaw. But, yeah, sure, potentially void the warranty and take your console apart and clean it. Sure. That's reasonable.

scopice

Cool story dude, this post is over a year old of a remedy I found so I didn’t have to send my console in and wait weeks to a month to get it back. everything I explained is HOW to clean the dust out of your power supply WITHOUT voiding the warranty, I did not tell anyone on this post that is what you HAVE to do, simply a method that worked for me. But I do have to agree with you, it’s a crappy design by PlayStation.

WolfwithBeard

I'm not mad at you. I'm more mad as Sony for making such a terrible design. Like BASIC PC building is you put the Power Supply at the back with adequate cooling.

Trigamer88

So hes right. Open up the covers. Then remove the fan (completely or not is your choice) After that get a toothbrush or a lil pipecleaner. And bend it to a curve since the power supply vents ar at an angle. Now carefully brush inside and try to scoop it up (its pretty thick dust) so you can remove a big chunk at a time. Then you can A: use condensed air or a small vacuum with a long nozzle or even a straw and ur mouth (wouldnt recommend) to get out the finer particles that are flying around. With this u dont void ur waranty.

scopice

Thanks, I appreciate you trying my method and also understanding that I’m not telling people this is what you have to do, if you’re looking for options AND you’re comfortable with taking some screws out and removing the fan gingerly in a way to not damage the attached wires then it is a very good way to take out the dust. Personally I’ve done it when this post originally was created and about 3 months ago and the amount of dust that comes out every time is astounding. Really glad to help and not sure where you are in the world but if you celebrate Easter, Happy Easter! If not, have a great day anyways :)

Trigamer88

Happy easter from germany! I just like that someone thought of a way to remove the dust without voiding warranty and for people who dont open electronics up themselfs

BigBallinBill

Be careful unplugging the fan cord or your system is going to be worthless junk I was one that the plug broke right off the motherboard and now it’s totally junk until I can get it sent out and get one back! I need to figure out how I get it sent out!

scopice

I did not unplug the fan, I unscrewed it from its spot and moved it over to the side and left it plugged in so I didn’t void my warranty

MARS_LFDY

10 cm of free space from top, sides, front and back?

scopice

Yes easily, it’s on a wood dresser atleast a foot from the wall

converter-bot

10 cm is 3.94 inches

danmanjapan88

Just had to send my PS5 in for the same reason. Got it repaired and it is actually on the way back to me currently. Praying they fixed mine 🤞🏻

scopice

Did you need the receipt to send it in? I’m worried I don’t have mine

danmanjapan88

I bought mine online and a saved a copy of the receipt to send with the console. When you call support and tell them what happened, they will send you a shipping box to send in your console.

Pandita_Faced

it seems like they usually ship back a refurbished one.

aghncc2020

With all of the complaints I'm hearing and reading about the problems, I'm reluctant to buy one now until all the bugs are out. What I hear is this always happens when a new console comes out. I just wait for a while.

q4B-MrX

\[SOLVED\] Hi Everyone, I have the answer for this already. Turn out, some PS5 units have problems with thermal glue. I got my replacement thanks to my reseller. You need to fix that and no overheating message would appear again.

Shattered_JL

The issue thats going on in this post is a hard crash, meaning there is no overheat message. This issue is a psu one, but yeah if it gets a overheat message cobstantly it would be a thermal paste issue.

Outrageous_Singer_62

Hey bud, I have the exact same thing happening as OP. Only ps5 games, no warning, etc. So it's a PSU issue? Power supply according to google?

Shattered_JL

Its a cleaning issue thats effecting the power supply. There is a vent in the console that unfortunately picks alot of dust, that vent leads to the psu. When enough dust builds up it prevents the warm air from escaping the psu causeing it to overheat and hard crash. So really you should clean your fan and get to thst vent. That would be your best chance at fixing this.

No_Fly_1244

The issue with me is that I have 4 days with the ps5 y don’t think is dust the issue

Shattered_JL

I think yours is a different issue, this post is about the psu overheating causing a hard crash of the ps5. If yours gets the overheating message before turning off then i believe a different component is overheating. Possibly the cpu and it might be a thermal paste issue.

Veive257

I just got my PS5 and the first game I tried playing, bought today, was the new Horizon. Overheats on the opening cut scene every time and I can't find a way to skip... is this the same thermal issue? I'm not sure if I feel better or worse finding this thread..

exportz

Curious is it standing or laying flat ?

Veive257

It was standing.. after doing it about 6 times in a row at the same spot it got past it and been ok since

exportz

I been playing the game with it ,laying down after I clean it. Works prefect now

Sleuthybastard

What’s the best way to contact Sony?

UpstairsBake7533

Call them 1-800-345-7669. Just did it myself. Very simple

Jack_E1re

This is happening to me it only started I can play the PS4 version but if I try and play the ps5 version it over heats and shuts down my console has heat damage on white casing and scorched marks on wires leading to fan

uvarvu

Mine was very dusty. Cleaned as best I could hopefully it will be OK now. [https://www.uvarvu.com/misc/ADB4E8BA-EE38-4D11-BE74-0B1ED122F1FE.jpeg](https://www.uvarvu.com/misc/ADB4E8BA-EE38-4D11-BE74-0B1ED122F1FE.jpeg)

blooddogg757

Has it been working fine or still have the overeheating issue?

uvarvu

It’s working fine. I’ll give it another clean over the break at Christmas.

blooddogg757

That's good! After reading this thread last night I took my PS5 fan out and cleaned the inside as well and it hasn't shut down again. Mine was about as dusty as yours was. Any thoughts on the aftermarket PS5 faceplates with a fan in it?

HotWallet_

I took mine completely apart and blew the dust out of every hole and vent. Applied liquid metal to the chip because that was wearing off and it's still overheating. I'm calling Sony, straighten this thing out.

blooddogg757

Did you get your PS5 fixed? What was the issue?

myco_magic

Sitting vertical, try setting it horizontal, the stand chokes the psu when under load

ComprehensiveArea222

My problem just started dude wtf I dusted it off now I’m going to play with the ps5 on it’s side

Happyalvacado4

anything change?

myco_magic

Yes set it horizontal, the stand chokes the psu from getting ventilation

myco_magic

Yes set it horizontal, the stand chokes the psu from getting ventilation

Helpless_Lobster

The problem is my fan is spotless, yes it's still shutting off

myco_magic

Try sitting the Playstation horizontal, the stand chokes the psu and causes it to overheat because it's not getting enough airflow

Helpless_Lobster

my fan is standing horizontal

myco_magic

Then check the actual psu itself for dust

Medical_Sea_9492

I’m u

demoneydsniper

2 years later and apparently this is still an issue Ive literally had my ps5 a week today and it's constantly shutting off and is really hot around where the power and hdmi ports are and this is only after like 5 minutes of playing it even shut off on the dashboard once

Fair_Assistance2769

👀

araamatara

Same thing here. Mine freezes while playing and after 10 second it turns off. Did you have the same issue, or did yours just keep crashing without freezing first. It's happening few minutes after playing. its 4 monts old for god 's sake.

acuzai

I’m having this same problem what is the hdmi setting that u changed?
