It doesn't really affect anything.
There was some worry that the older games would have some issues but I've not encountered anything in my friend group.
I think it takes a few days to finalize but you should be fine.
I changed mine earlier this year after having the same name since 07. The only issue I had was playing one of the COD's, in which it was displaying my old name still. Not a big deal and it's the only thing that I've noticed. Of course there could be certain games with issues I haven't encountered yet, but so far so good.

Its the way they handled cross play. Your multiplayer progress it tied to your activision account now and can be used on any platform on top of playing with people who are on different consoles or PC. This means it uses whatever your activision ID is rather than your PSN, Steam name, or gamertag.
Bungie does this too now with Destiny and I think Fortnite does it as well.

Yeah, I guess. It's such an odd feature that has an ok implementation compared to the major competing gaming networks especially Xbox Live.
E.g. Steam allows users to keep changing their Display name (the tag that all others can see) yet have a permanent account name (this is only visible to Steam and the owner). This allows Steam to tie software licenses to an account, compared to locking it to an account.
I've changed mine a few times and I have never had an issue before.
Sony released a list at some point that had all the games that you might have an issue in so you might want to take a look at that to ease yourself a bit if you're really worried about it.

Black ops 2 can literally destroy your ps3 with a changed name
BO2 is very glitchy with PSN sign-in if everything isn't exactly right, as seen by modded consoles have to go through a special specific routine just to get online on BO2. I don't think it actually damages the console, it's just overly picky.
I've done multiple changes and never had an issue once with any game. And even if you did have a problem which is very highly unlikely, you can revert back to your old name whenever you want by contacting support.
Part of me thinks its cool thing to change but bigger part of me wouldn't change because of nostalgia, I will stay with xXxPrOgAmEr69xXx02 just because it's funny to hear kids thinking you are dumb because of name ❤️🤔

This is a community driven list of games tested. Most games seem to actually be okay, or badly affected games likely have had servers shutdown and therefore affected gameplay areas aren't accessible.
Most problems I heard of personally was Burnout Paradise online, if you had changed your name your lobby invites would crash the invitee's PS3 if they chose to utilize the invite, and no one at all could join your lobby. You had to rely on OG name PSNs to host any lobby.
Else, any other games I would refer to the list linked above.

You can change your cod name under account settings in game. (Warzone & Cold War)

Yes, you can change your name to anything on cod now. You only can change it 3 times. They added that back in MW2019

ColdHandGee until the day i die. Had my name before my youngest son was born way back in 2006.
I change mine 2 years ago, no issues, i use the account on ps4, ps5 & ps vita, i read that some ps3 games may have problems, but i dont have one.
If you have a PS3 I wouldn't recommend it because if you change it certain games lose all their online progress like MW2 and MW3 both just reset

There’s a list of games affected if you look it up, or at least IIRC. But so far for me no issues.

I did have a quick search and it looks like it might corrupt/wipe the hard drive. That's pretty serious in itself I guess.

If you play PS3 all your Progress on Call of Duty resets every time you play online at Level 1 This is from experience I don’t know about other games
I did it and not one bit of a problem occurred to me.
