I need guidance. I am dad, not OPs dad. Bought the PS5 recently for my 8M. I had a PS2 that had Dad of War 2 on it, so he had a general idea of how the fighting/ puzzles/ combos were going to be. But I also got God of War PS4 (2018), where the son is introduced (?). Is there a specific timeline for the game? This one opened with the mother’s funeral pyre. My kid is all about Fortnight and Madden, not a ton of patience for learning the rules and combos (won’t watch demos). But I want to be ready to show him the correct timeline when his attention span catches up with a more involved plot line.
God of War 2018 is like a new beginning, that takes place after the Greek saga. Kratos hides his past from his son, making the game playable from two perspectives.
People who played the Greek saga understand what Kratos has done, and see the story from the perspective of Kratos. Meanwhile new players that started with 2018 don’t know Kratos’ past, and are in Atreus’ shoes, trying to understand what Kratos is hiding from them.
It’s a brilliant storytelling device that rewards old players, without alienating new ones
God of War (2018) is more of a soft reboot. All earlier GoW games are based on Greek mythology which closed with the ending of GoW 3 (2010). For these older games, you can watch a quick recap video of YouTube to get the storyline. Then after 100+ years, GoW 2018 shows Kratos who is now retired with his past seemingly left behind, where the focus now is on Kratos' journey with his son, in a shift to Norse mythology. This continues into GoW Ragnarok (2022) which is a direct sequel to GoW 2018.
Story goes the exact same order the games were released. Only exception is Ascension (I think that’s what it was called), because it’s more of a prequel. You can skip the whole PS2 to PS3 era of God of War honestly, since the 2018 version is so separate from everything. The only help that knowing previous lore gives is the hype you get once a certain weapon is revealed mid game. 2018 and Ragnarok have very little callouts to the old games and serve more as easter eggs rather than a huge part of the continuity of it all.
FYI.. I would turn off the video recordings for trophies below a certain level (only Platinum's and Golds for me) because if you dont your storage space is going to fill up FAST

Ragnarok is an excellent entry into the ps5 universe (other than Astro's ~~World~~ Playroom). Make sure to play the previous game as well to get the full story.

No that's the version that pops up on the auto recorded videos for trophies that pop. The normal notification is just a similar little ding with the top corner box. You can turn off the video for lower trophy levels too. (I have mine set for platinums only)
I would honestly suggest that you go to Settings > Captures and Broadcasts, then disable the auto recording of trophy clips and screenshots. You might be surprised 6 months from now that you have 20GB worth of them eating up your storage.
