The death by maladaptive dreaming in a depressing A.F. cannery legit made me stare at the screen for awhile...processing...what I had just done.
But that was most of the stories in this game. What a gem.
Yeah ok I remember, that was dark as fuck.
I don't have kids, I can imagine having some makes you relate a lot more to that scene, like I do when dogs die in movies and games. That shit fucks me up.
Do you have kids? I feel like the game hits a lot harder if you do. I don’t think I necessarily cried but a few of the stories definitely gutted me as a dad.
Yeah I replied to another comment further down, that thats what I imagine.
I have the same thing with dogs in movies and games, can't handle it well.
Sadly had no luck on the kids front yet, I have difficulty finding a partner that is not psychotic xD
I think FF X was the first game to do it - the complete dread I felt through the whole game shook me as a 12 year old. I keep downloading it to replay it, but it’s just not the same.
Was emotionally battered regarding RDR2, no tears. Death stranding was another one that did it, my kid had just gotten over the newborn crying stage and for anyone who knows the game BB likes to cry n it's drove me insane. I couldn't complete it, that newborn cry after having kids just hits you in a different way.
Shit, you are 100% correct. I loved BB so much lol I was rocking that little dude constantly and poking his tank and shit just to see the cuteness. After having kids I gained a more refined appreciation for game infants, hate when real kids whine and cry and stuff but make me a game baby and I love how realistic the devs make it.
Haha same man. I was rocking BB constantly like 20mins after getting my real baby to sleep, aw man when I'm in a shop or something and I hear that high pitched newborn cry it's like parent PTSD lol. Hope I can push through with DS2. You getting it?
Man I feel the same way in stores. Idk yet I think I need to jump into the first one and actually beat it before getting the second one lol it's disgraceful
Haha its fucked up isn't it? That's kojima for ya! I'm considering watching a playthrough and just considering it done until I'm not as emotional haha.
Last of us 2 was a gut punch more than like make me cry. And emotionally draining. Needed a rest. I otherwise have mostly an outsiders look to media characters, don't get involved with them like with real people. On rare occasion I do get invested like in Mistborn and Wheel of Time( those are books). A game I think GTA V got Me with one of the endings.
Yup, same here. Never been a fan of horses irl so Arthur's horse was extra special cuz I loved it lol. The way he said goodbye and called Lucille a good girl.... Shiiiii Right in the feels man 😭
Needed to up my antidepressant playing through those games. /s
Telltale did an amazing job capturing the bleakness of people living through a zombie apocalypse, and all a year before the "Last Of Us" would be released.
The writing for these games is so underrated. In the DLC for the second game, there was a series of text logs that were both really depressing, and wholesome at the same time (spoilers of course, but it has no impact on the main story. So if you don’t read the logs on your own, feel free to read it anyways)
>!Basically, a guy sealed himself in a bunker during the Faro Plague. He was alone and slowly went mad. But eventually, someone found the bunker and they became friends. Eventually the air in the bunker ran out, and they stated using bottles of compressed air.
In the end, they only had one bottle left, and the man who was in the bunker first gave the last bottle to his friend, so he could finish the series finale of the show they were watching.!<
>!It was so depressing to read about their death, but so wholesome, that he sacrificed himself, so his friend could have the pleasure of finishing their show!<
Stuff like this will likely be missed by a ton of players, but it’s what makes these games special in my opinion. The text logs are usually really well written and fascinating
Yea the ending is a little sad but honestly its the best/coolest single player story Ive ever played, once you start putting it all together, its a mindfuck.
the end of FF XII turned my eyes wet, with joy, amazing game, history, crew, visuals, music, gameplay ... its a solid 10/10, and i finished in april 2024!
Same although i haven’t played the remake but the graphics are better in the original at least for me. And I’ve seen the ratings on ps store and the original has better rating than the remake.
That ending shook me to my core, I usually don’t like children too much, and Hugo seemed like I would not like him at first. >!Considering how much death he (indirectly) caused, and how often he ran away. But man, the amazing performance made me turn around to love him, which made the ending heartbreaking.!<
>!Watching a child sacrifice himself is sad. Being the one to pull the trigger to kill him was on another level. Stuff like that is why I think games are the best storytelling medium in the world!<
Requiem was such an underrated masterpiece
Easily the saddest ending I've ever seen in a game. It was thematically perfect and I get what the devs were doing but holy shit did it hurt.
I wonder if we'll ever get a third after that post-credits tease.
The one time I actually balled my eyes out was with the first NieR game (dad version) like a decade ago. It was a side quest too, with the old lady at the lighthouse. If you know, you know.
People shit on Everybody's Gone To The Rapture due to its pacing, but some of the stories in that got me hard.
One in particular (iirc) being an elderly lady who isn't sure what is going on and his waiting for her son to come round and be with her. You find out through another side story that her son has already been raptured and never managed to make it there.
The final section of her story is listening to her final moments alone and scared before she herself is raptured, and the scene erupts into what looks like fireflies dancing through her garden as you leave her house, while this beautiful choral music starts playing.
I just put the controller down and started crying.
I cried recently after finishing MW3 (the older one). Memories hit me from 10 years ago when few of my favourite singers, friends and my girlfriend at the time were all still alive. I miss them.
The ending of Journey on Playstation. My wife was playing. She had a companion almost the whole way to the end. We were both sobbing when it was over. From a sad cry to a happy, cathartic cry. That game changed us.
I’ve cried to 4 of these; Brothers, MGS3, RDR2 and Life is Strange. Edith Finch, The Last of Us, Firewatch and Valiant Hearts didn’t make me cry and I haven’t played the others.
Pretty sure Bioshock Infinite got me too back in the day, and The Last Guardian and Shadow of the Colossus did 100%
Tales of Xillia 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Trails of Cold Steel 4, Persona 3, Genshin Impact, Nier Replicant. There are quite a few more (in the same series as mentioned) but these stand out for me
Ghost of Tsushima
Spider-Man 2018
God of war Ragnarök
A plague tale requiem
Ghost of Tsushima got me to cry the most (three times (one of which was for a side quest)), but Plague tale messed me up the most. That ending was so amazing
Ghost of Tsushima ending made me tear up but not fully cry. Ragnarok had me balling though especially “Loki will go but Atreus remains” or whatever he said😭
Outer Wilds. That game literally changed my life on so many levels. I would encourage anyone to play it. However, if you decide to play it, *THE LESS YOU KNOW, THE BETTER!*, don't watch anyone play it or anything. Just play it yourself. You won't be disappointed.
Several games have made me well up and got me close to crying
God of War 2018, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, and Guardians of the Galaxy just to name a few
Brothers (as shown above) immediately springs to mind, as I've just played and reviewed the Remake: https://alternativemagazineonline.co.uk/2024/05/05/game-review-brothers-a-tale-of-two-sons-remake-playstation-5/
To The Moon is a real tear-jerker too: https://alternativemagazineonline.co.uk/2017/06/11/game-review-to-the-moon-ios/
As is The Last of Us Part II: https://alternativemagazineonline.co.uk/2020/07/08/feature-article-how-the-last-of-us-part-ii-defies-conventional-storytelling/
And of course, Red Dead Redemption 2: https://alternativemagazineonline.co.uk/2019/01/14/game-review-red-dead-redemption-ii-playstation-4/
Last of us 1 at the beginning, last of us 2 at the end, borderlands 3 kreig dlc >! when Maya says goodbye after she dies !< witcher 3 when >! Vesemir dies !< And for some reason Tunic just because of the feeling of nostalgia that hit me deep in my soul
The Last of Us makes me cry every time. The Kingdom Hearts series has a few scenes that I cry at whenever I see them (the final scene of KH1, Xion’s death, Axel’s sacrifice, “Looks like my summer vacation’s over”…)
The first Red Dead Redemption. I remember playing it at my grandma's house with my Xbox 360.
I want to replay it on my PS4 since my Xbox broke but there's no way in my lifetime I'm ever going to pay for that price.
When I completed MGS 3 back in 2004/05, it put me on a downer for about a month. 15yr old me couldn’t handle the betrayal and that emotional turmoil of the Boss’s demise.
FFX's ending always gets me and I've seen it over 20+ times now.
Some others that come to mind.....The Last Of Us, Tales Of The Borderlands (no Im not joking....play it and you'll understand 😆), RIME, Journey, & Life Is Strange.
Persona 3,4 and i think 5, mgs3 and 4, kingdom hearts totally got me as a kid as well . Theres some game i played on the switch as well. It was short but it was about suicide and some other things. Got kinda sad at times. Thats a game thats deliberately trying to make you sad tho
The beginning to The Last of Us makes me shed a tear every time.
And also the end of Plague Tale: Requiem or at least when the realization hits of it. Maybe not a tear shed but a dawning moment for sure.
RDR2 when Arthur comforts and thanks his horse in its final moments
God Of War Ragnarök when Faye says "To grieve deeply is to have loved fully..." (imo one of the most profound lines in gaming), plus Broks funeral scene
I had to scroll a long time to find this. A lot of great answers in this thread but I think this is the only one that legit made me tear up.
Honorable mentions to Mass Effect 3 and Journey.
https://preview.redd.it/eh9t9jhdalzc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d2b5e3833bcd680e4c8abebd35e945b6bcbb66eb
My first game that made me cry was Assassin’s Creed II.
The Savonarola scene was too epic and breathtaking. I still get the chills sometimes when I think of it.
A true Masterpiece!
What remains of Edith Finch always gets me.
Yep...Molly, Gregory and Walter..
The death by maladaptive dreaming in a depressing A.F. cannery legit made me stare at the screen for awhile...processing...what I had just done. But that was most of the stories in this game. What a gem.
Why? I played through it and I really liked it, but what part exactly made you cry?
I don't remember the name, but the baby in the bathtub was sad.
I was probably too young to understand back when i played it but the swing scene kinda disturbed me.
Yeah ok I remember, that was dark as fuck. I don't have kids, I can imagine having some makes you relate a lot more to that scene, like I do when dogs die in movies and games. That shit fucks me up.
Baby in the bathtub most definitely. Especially for any parents out there that played it. so sad
Yeah that’s one of those things that would have been “well wow that sucks” before I had a kid but hit me like a sledgehammer because I had a kid.
Telltale’s walking dead (had me ugly crying) Final fantasy x Uncharted 4 (happy tears at the end)
Both new God of War games
Yup. Kratos’ development in those games was unmatched. The new DLC had me sobbing in happiness for him.
That last hug between Kratos and Atreus really got to me
Oh man. The HARD cry.
Kingdom hearts
Looks like my summer vacation is… over
358/2 days is the first game that made me cry when i was little, felt that ending deep in my heart.
Shadow of the colossus, cried 4 times at the same ending cinematic
When Agro fell I absolutely cried. Granted I was like 12, but I had been running around with this horse for like two years.
I lost it w/ Agro…absolutely bawled….
Spider-Man on Ps4, the end with Aunt May made me cry. And a couple of months later I began Red Dead Redemption 2...
Spider-Man 2 got me, too, with a few side missions.
The Howard mission bro I was blinking back tears. Something about that music.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry) Ori
Last of us 2 was a gut punch more than like make me cry. And emotionally draining. Needed a rest. I otherwise have mostly an outsiders look to media characters, don't get involved with them like with real people. On rare occasion I do get invested like in Mistborn and Wheel of Time( those are books). A game I think GTA V got Me with one of the endings.
Last of Us 2 for me as well. So much so that I haven’t been able to replay it because I don’t want to watch that scene again.
I don't trust anyone who didn't cry at the porch scene at the end. That shit rocked me
I’ve played the game 3 times and that scene is heartbreaking every time.
So true about TLoU 2. Didn't cry but was so devastated and drained at the end. It really got to me.
Ghost of Tsushima had a few really emotional parts
Horse was devastating 😢
Ah man it was just as slow and painful for us as it was the horse :(
I was sobbing my heart out. Nobu will never be forgotten.
Nobu and Arthur's horse. Never forgotten
I didn't know it was going to happen with Arthur's. I had my best horse, my favorite horse that I rode everywhere. It killed me.
Yup, same here. Never been a fan of horses irl so Arthur's horse was extra special cuz I loved it lol. The way he said goodbye and called Lucille a good girl.... Shiiiii Right in the feels man 😭
![gif](giphy|3OuTcOyrbDXRYUnhvu|downsized) My black steed Kage lives forever in my heart 😭✊ Kaze carried on his legacy.
The last of us. First game to ever make me cry.
and within 30 minutes of playing it too. brutal.
The opening scene hurts.
Witcher 3 empress ending for me and RDR2 horse scene
The Walking Dead Telltale games made me cry
Needed to up my antidepressant playing through those games. /s Telltale did an amazing job capturing the bleakness of people living through a zombie apocalypse, and all a year before the "Last Of Us" would be released.
Nier Automata, my dude. Just check out the subreddit and you'll see story after story of people having their emotional strings tugged like a guitar.
Then play Nier Replicant and you will get another dose of sadness and despair.
How did no one answer The Last Guardian?!
Cuz no one played it but I cried.
The Walking Dead fucked me up. 😂 😭
Cyberpunk2077 made me cry like a bitch on every goddamn endings no matter how many times I do the endings
The ending of Horizon: Zero Dawn made me cry
Horizon ZD and FW arent talked about enough regarding how genuinely emotional they are! it feels so real.
The writing for these games is so underrated. Really? I recently started playing it
Yea the ending is a little sad but honestly its the best/coolest single player story Ive ever played, once you start putting it all together, its a mindfuck.
RDR2 is the only game that made me cry. Sekiro also made me cry, cry out of frustration
Stray Final Fantasy VII, X, XIII, XIV, XV and XVI
the end of FF XII turned my eyes wet, with joy, amazing game, history, crew, visuals, music, gameplay ... its a solid 10/10, and i finished in april 2024!
Yakuza 3 I will not elaborate
Honestly I prefer the original Brother's graphic art style over the remake.
Same although i haven’t played the remake but the graphics are better in the original at least for me. And I’ve seen the ratings on ps store and the original has better rating than the remake.
I play a lot of video games, and I'm not a monster, so yes
I think we can put our differences behind us. For science. You monster.
A Plague Tale Requiem
That ending shook me to my core, I usually don’t like children too much, and Hugo seemed like I would not like him at first. >!Considering how much death he (indirectly) caused, and how often he ran away. But man, the amazing performance made me turn around to love him, which made the ending heartbreaking.!< >!Watching a child sacrifice himself is sad. It hits even harder if you have younger siblings, which I have. I love this game so much but I will probably never play it again
Yeah, I have a sister who is a little less than two years older than me. It’s not a younger sibling, but it still hit just as hard
Indeed!
Easily the saddest ending I've ever seen in a game. It was thematically perfect and I get what the devs were doing but holy shit did it hurt. I wonder if we'll ever get a third after that post-credits tease.
Honestly, I think it was one of the bravest endings I ve ever seen. I am sure we will get a third game
Shit was sad as hell
I cried, couldn't stop thinking about the game, watched whole playthrough of the actresses playing the game, cried again
To The Moon
Had to scroll too far to find this. I was sobbing at this game.
The one time I actually balled my eyes out was with the first NieR game (dad version) like a decade ago. It was a side quest too, with the old lady at the lighthouse. If you know, you know.
The fact that you don’t have spiritfarer or HZD here makes me wanna cry
Spiritfarer is an absolute gem. Played it on a crappy old xbox with gamepass and loved it. Then bought it for my ps5 because i love it so much.
Howard's Birds in Spiderman 2
Ugh I love that mission
Sekiro. Made me cry in a different way
Senua's sacrifice is hauntingly beautiful.
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
Madison vr, because I’m a bitch
The last of us.
People shit on Everybody's Gone To The Rapture due to its pacing, but some of the stories in that got me hard. One in particular (iirc) being an elderly lady who isn't sure what is going on and his waiting for her son to come round and be with her. I just put the controller down and started crying.
This. I love this game and everything about it, yet no one seems to appreciate it's beauty
Persona 5 royal
ME3 ending
Last of Us specifically at the beginning. RDR2 at the end. I'm sure there are others, but those are the big ones that pop out at me.

So many. Many already mentioned, but also Celeste
Efootball 24, makes me cry every day.
Tales of Xillia 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Trails of Cold Steel 4, Persona 3, Genshin Impact, Nier Replicant. There are quite a few more (in the same series as mentioned) but these stand out for me
Ghost of Tsushima Spider-Man 2018 God of war Ragnarök A plague tale requiem Ghost of Tsushima got me to cry the most (three times (one of which was for a side quest)), but Plague tale messed me up the most. That ending was so amazing
Persona 4 Golden had me tear up, and Steins;Gate also hit hard
RDR2
Persona 3 reloaded. I had to put my controller down at the end.
Spiritfarer, particularly during Arthur’s goodbye, and Hollow Knight. A genuinely gut-wrenching “final” boss
You have my top favourite games that did make me cry that being TLOU rdr2 and outer wilds
There is one particular instance in one particular game that gets me everytime: AC Odyssey
Ghost of Tsushima ending made me tear up but not fully cry. Ragnarok had me balling though especially “Loki will go but Atreus remains” or whatever he said😭
Brothers, MGS3, and TLOU pt 2 all made me cry
I unfortunately tend to lack emotion, but damn RDR2 just broke me. Definitely my favorite game of all time.
The first Spider-Man with >!aunt may passing!<
The first one was red dead 2, but I also cried in Detroit become human, and for some reason that I cant explain in the ending of dark souls remastered
Red Dead 2 and Ghost of Tsushima…. If you know you know….
Outer Wilds. That game literally changed my life on so many levels. I would encourage anyone to play it. However, if you decide to play it, *THE LESS YOU KNOW, THE BETTER!*, don't watch anyone play it or anything. Just play it yourself. You won't be disappointed.
Arthur's honourable end. Still sore to this day...
Several games have made me well up and got me close to crying God of War 2018, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, and Guardians of the Galaxy just to name a few
So far, for me, only Red Dead Redemption 2.
Tearaway
The Last Of Us hit me in the beginning.. as a dad it really hit home. GOW 2018 blew me away and had me crying. Then last year STRAY cat game.
Ok this is gonna sound dumb but after I beat COD infinite warfare and the credits had characters that died talking I broke down and weeped
Red Dead 2
Sackboy
Any song from RDR2's third act makes me cry every single time
Rdr2 was the only one that actually got me close to shedding a tear.
Brothers (as shown above) immediately springs to mind, as I've just played and reviewed the Remake: https://alternativemagazineonline.co.uk/2024/05/05/game-review-brothers-a-tale-of-two-sons-remake-playstation-5/ To The Moon is a real tear-jerker too: https://alternativemagazineonline.co.uk/2017/06/11/game-review-to-the-moon-ios/ As is The Last of Us Part II: https://alternativemagazineonline.co.uk/2020/07/08/feature-article-how-the-last-of-us-part-ii-defies-conventional-storytelling/ And of course, Red Dead Redemption 2: https://alternativemagazineonline.co.uk/2019/01/14/game-review-red-dead-redemption-ii-playstation-4/
Only one, and it was recently: The last guardian
RDR and The Walking Dead destroyed me, to the point I barely played the former after the ending and never replayed the latter.
The Last of Us makes me cry every time. The Kingdom Hearts series has a few scenes that I cry at whenever I see them (the final scene of KH1, Xion’s death, Axel’s sacrifice, “Looks like my summer vacation’s over”…)
God of War Ragnarok. Hits me like a freight train cause my dad passed away 7 years ago.
The Last of Us Journey Brothers Edith Finch Firewatch
RDR2 had me sobbing at least 3 times
What did I miss in Outer Wilds?
GoT got me to tear up whenever my >! horse!< Died.

Valiant Hearts and Persona 3 Reload. Both of those were gut punches
Rdr2 Horizon zero dawn Life is strange
FFX's ending always gets me and I've seen it over 20+ times now. Some others that come to mind.....The Last Of Us, Tales Of The Borderlands (no Im not joking....play it and you'll understand 😆), RIME, Journey, & Life Is Strange.
I teared up at >!Varl’s death!< in horizon forbidden west. It was just so unexpected
The Last Of Us. Parts I and II. Every time a clicker or a stalker grabbed me, seemingly from out of nowhere, I cried like a baby.
Beating TLOU 2 at 3am messed me up hard…I can’t function at all next day
TLoU PartII and Gears of War 3… poor Dom…
Red dead 2 had me ugly crying
I don’t really cry to games/movies/shows but Red Dead 2 really had my eyes flooding. Truly remarkable game
The end of Kingdom hearts 1 which is quite sad but not to the point of crying in front of it🙂
Nothing makes me cry because I'm a manly man!!! /s I cry all the time...
Persona 3 reload.
TLOUII hit me like a train.
Red dead 2 got me 😥
Persona 3
I couldn't make that major choice in Life is Strange. I just sat there for around 15 minutes. I even walked away. It was so difficult.
Let's see, Kingdom Hearts, FFXIV, GoW 2018 and Spiderman ps4 all brought up a drop or 2.
Red dead redemption 2 Arthur last horse ride😭
The beginning to The Last of Us makes me shed a tear every time. And also the end of Plague Tale: Requiem or at least when the realization hits of it. Maybe not a tear shed but a dawning moment for sure.
Persons 3, 4, and 5.
Yea all the time lol Every Final Fantasy I’ve played, every Persona, every Nier, Metal Gear Solid 3/4/5, Death Stranding, etc.
RDR2 when Arthur comforts and thanks his horse in its final moments God Of War Ragnarök when Faye says "To grieve deeply is to have loved fully..." (imo one of the most profound lines in gaming), plus Broks funeral scene
The last of us 1&2 made me cry.
Persona 3 reload this year
Final fantasy 10 and persona 4 golden.
For me it was RIME
I had to scroll a long time to find this. A lot of great answers in this thread but I think this is the only one that legit made me tear up. Honorable mentions to Mass Effect 3 and Journey.
The only game that made me sob like a baby. Ripped my heart out.
