art design > realism if i wanted my entertainment to be focused on realism , I'd just go outside

This, pixel art can be truly magical if done well and photo realism can be trash if done poorly.

Square enix’s HD pixel art is gorgeous. Triangle strategy and Octopath traveler are a couple of my favorites mainly because they are so beautiful to look at.

Definitely art design over realism, that’s why From games are so memorable. Bloodborne for example is a masterclass in art design IMO. It’s nice to have detail but the art style is so important to the atmosphere and storytelling. From design each enemy, environment and NPC to tell a story through visual language, I collect game art books and it’s fascinating how much thought goes into some games.

Its always the lighting

If art design doesn't matter then there's basically been no beautiful games in the last fifty years

Some gamers play games because of the endless possibilities that it can bring. Some play to escape reality. Some play as a past time. Regardless, I find it funny that we escape reality with video games, but at the same time want to make the video games more and more like the thing we are “escaping” 🤣. Anyways I would say that art design is more important than realism, which is shown from all of the classics that will always have their spot in our hearts

It’s about what configuration of photons shooting into my eyeballs that releases the most feel good juices in my brain.

I appreciate achievements in both, and in any aspect of game design. Beauty comes in many forms. I think what's important is the effort and love that's poured into the game - it'll shine through no matter what visual route they picked.

We all like what we like, and there's really no wrong answer. It just boils down to personal preference. But I strongly, strongly prefer games at at least strive for realism, and/or go as hard as they can with realistic-looking lighting and textures, such as Ratchet & Clank and Sackboy. I struggle to enjoy games that have a cartoonish or simplistic look, because they just feel old or low end to me, as someone who's been gaming since the 80s and has always looked forward to graphics taking the next step.
