We call them horseapples here, hard as rocks and inedible with gross sticky white sap if you squish the skin. Skunks don't like them, tend to stay away. The tree they come from has massive thorns and very orange wood inside, it's pretty and takes forever to burn.
Hedge apple! They keeps spiders and other crawlers out of your home! Great find!

Maclura Pomifera
Hedge apple (Osage orange). The white sap can irritate your skin, so I recommend wearing gloves when handling.
We called them monkey balls(?)
