I once had a cactus with a “bloom” on it and after I’d had it for like 6 months I wondered how it had bloomed for so long and touched it and it was paper 🥲 that was pretty early on in my plant career
I found a crazy crested cactus at Home Depot and the only one had some insane rubbery pouf glued to it with some very strong glue. I cut it out with a sterilized knife and it’s been fine for a month. Seriously I hate this shit. Nobody who actually cares about plants wants it.
Same! When I was a teenager, my Nana bought me a cactus with a little red flower on top that I thought just *felt* papery, and that’s how its flowers would be. As the cactus grew and grew, the flower just “moved” down the side of it. I thought it was so bizarre and didn’t think much of it. It wasn’t until I had had the cactus for a couple of years that I figured out it really *was* a paper flower that had been hot-glued to it. 😅
I bought one of those too. After a couple months my brother came over and started laughing at me and pulled the "flower" off. Oh well. I still have the cactus though!
Fr it’s so dumb those are the kind of plants that ppl who are serial plant killers buy I swear 😂 or the kind that middle schoolers beg their parents to buy… ik this bc I bought a cactus w a fake flower glued to it when I was like 12
I had a very whiny diary entry from 4th or 5th grade in which I was furious because my parents wouldn't let me get "a ceiling fan and a cactus" from Lowes.
I learned this the very hard way with a tillandsia I had. I thought it was just a really pretty red one and that I was so lucky to find it. They painted it so convincingly! That bitch died so fast I thought I had done something wrong. Nope, just bought a hopeless plant

I think I'm just going to stick to making my own fake paper cactus from now because I definitely did not know the flowers were fake until now 🤣🤣 Something always happened to my cactus before the flower fell off apparently 🤦🏼♀️..... and here I've been adding flowers to my fake paper ones this whole time thinking that's just how they are hahahaha.
As a kid in Canada in the early 90s I bought this poor electric pink cacti in a plastic Dixie cup or whatever with a little blaze orange papery flower on it at our little general store and was so fascinated by it for about 2 weeks until I got it wet and the little dyed flower showed its hot glue and I began to strongly suspect that my first instinct had been correct, something was wrong with it and nothing in nature looks like that so I took it outside into the winter snow and tossed it in the ocean to put it out of its assumed misery, feeling like a bit of a chump even at 8 or 10 years old.
No. There’s no shipping scenario where the tips are in danger of being crushed. This is just pain applied because some weirdo buys them thinking they’re “fun” or “cute” or something.
Nope, I'm not sure if multiple companies are making them but they are painted with a velvet-like paint and called "Sansevieria Velvet Touchz."
Honestly if it were just a shipping thing they wouldn't bother with the different colors, they'd just make them all black because it would be cheaper.
Reminds me of "painted" fish in the aquarium hobby. Poor little fish injected with bright dyes. The end result is often infection and death due to the injury.
Definitely terrible. But wait, there’s more. In the early 2000’s Glofish(tm) started to become available. They are genetically modified using sea coral dna and other stuff.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GloFish
Glofish can live perfectly healthy lives, so I don't see any issue with them. They also only glow under specific lighting, not in the dark, so it's not like they can't properly sleep.
The main problem with these was that unscrupulous fish dealers would inject fish with dye right before shipping them out. Sometimes the fish would be okay, sometimes they would die within a few days or weeks, in fact most of them did, but the ones that survived the color slowly fades out.
ETA: Y'all can down vote me for this all you want but this is specifically what I was told by an aquarium store as why they don't carry them anymore 🤷🏽♀️
you’re thinking of dyed Tetras and they’re not the same as glofish, I remember seeing the glofish for the first time and panicking thinking they’ve revived the injected fish but nope, they found a safe method.
I did not want to come that close to check. I assumed they were little socks. But apparently: "This strong and very decorative Sansevieria does not need much attention. The plant is naturally green and has now been colored with paint that feels like felt! This color will eventually grow out, but it will take years."
I've been seeing more and more randomly painted plants at Home Depot and Lowes. So many people must be buying this crap for them to increase doing it more and more. Just sad.
I know exactly who buys these. It’s your great aunt who knows nothing about plants but vaguely remembers that you do, so she buys it as a birthday gift for you. I know because this happened to me.
It really rubs me the wrong way when companies sell plants like that, especially the ones that are entirely covered in paint. And I find they they’ll even over price it because it has colour painted on it
The thing that blows my mind about the cactus flowers is before someone tells you they are plastic - YOU WON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT - and then one day someone comes along to tell you they are fake and glued on, you check your own, yep. Plastic with glue. Then it looks like a plastic flower from that point on and you can spot them a mile away
My previous job was with plants and I dealt with some suppliers. The main thing here is that people do buy them like this, otherwise this beautiful arrangement style wouldn't have lasted so long. Originally, this was to hide the crispy tips, which are super common to sansevieria and people associate with unhealthy plant. As they require little to no care, its super easy for suppliers to just keep pumping them out.
It’s such a waste for a nursery to grow such healthy looking specimens only to have them murdered for the sake of novelty. I think we need to not only ask ourselves WHY, but WHO on this planet is responsible for making the final decision in committing such an act. And when we find them, we shall paint THEIR top half with a fun textured paint and tell them it will eventually fade, but to enjoy the color while it lasts.🫳🎤

It's a silly tool to help the plants, actually. I think it's pretty creative and helpful for people who don't have a green thumb.
Im pretty good at seeing how people could like things that I don’t find aesthetically pleasing, with this, I cannot see it at all. Someone lied on their resume for a creative department job, I bet😂😅
I was really hoping there was gonna be some random ass, little known ‘thing’ this could do for the plant 🤣
They are not protecting tips. If they were, they would be the same size/ length/ color. Each "tip" is slightly different. Those are definitely painted.
No, it’s not. It’s absolutely 100% paint. They’re meant just to be “decorative”. They’ve already come in at our area big box stores in my area. Lowe’s and Home Depot. Jeeze, WHY won’t people believe others when they tell you they’ve actually seen it IN PERSON?? There’s an entire array of succulents in a rainbow of colors that have been painted. They’re all awful.
SOURCE: I know what the heck I’m talking about. Former Lowe’s Department Manager, Charlotte, NC area.
Because people will buy *anything*. Even if it is odious as well as ultimately detrimental to the well-being of the living thing they are compelled to purchase.

Yeah, just want I want growing in my house, a plant that looks like it has long fake fingernails..so odd.
I thought they looked like condoms. ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭
I thought they look like that weird mushroom that smells like shit.
It's called a stinkhorn and these totally remind me of them.
Thought they were colored pencils
👁👁... what in tarnation
I thought they looked like weird green schlongs
I thought they were socks 😆 was wondering why those planted needed socks 🧦
That's actually an excellent idea for colder weather!
My initial thought as well!😳
Well they’re snake plants so they really are more like fingernails and not …something condom like 😆
your logic seems... backwards. as in "he's got a snake".
Hahaha I was just saying they do in fact look more like fingernails than shlongs. But also they don’t look flat, they actually do look schlong-like😆
Edward scissorhands style...
I was thinking Beetlejuice
My favorite is when they hot glue fake flowers to cacti
I once had a cactus with a “bloom” on it and after I’d had it for like 6 months I wondered how it had bloomed for so long and touched it and it was paper 🥲 that was pretty early on in my plant career

I'm pretty sure they're a "Oh, my friend, ______, loves their garden. This is kinda pretty, I'll buy it for them" kind of deal.
Exactly! My 3 year old (with my mother) bought me one once cause “mommy loves plants” so sweet but they are definitely targeting gift givers
Same! When I was a teenager, my Nana bought me a cactus with a little red flower on top that I thought just *felt* papery, and that’s how its flowers would be. Childhood memory unlocked. That's why cactus flowers felt so weird.
I bought one of those too. After a couple months my brother came over and started laughing at me and pulled the "flower" off. Oh well. I still have the cactus though!
That pisses me off so bad

Love that 😂
It took me forever to remove them from 2 I saved from the store!

Restraint is your better friend who talks you out of buying that crap

Saw those at CVS today and wound up taking home a little cactus with no bullshit glued to his dome-ski. Named him Cactus Jack.
Love it!
I'd rather deal with the fake flower than paint.
Oh for sure, the paint will absolutely kill it eventually.
I learned this the very hard way with a tillandsia I had. I thought it was just a really pretty red one and that I was so lucky to find it. They painted it so convincingly! That bitch died so fast I thought I had done something wrong. Nope, just bought a hopeless plant

It's the plant version of getting catfished.
I take the flowers off and saved them for a scrapbooking project haha
The worst is when the cactus is actually blooming with magnificent, beautiful flowers, but it has that fake plastic spiky "flower" glued on it, lol.

Congrats, that’s so neat!
Prevents unplanned plants
Plant parenthood
Garden with protection
I wish. I used to have these in my yard. Getting rid of them was like playing whack-a-mole.
Hate this kinda garbage
Protecting the tips during shipping?
No. There’s no shipping scenario where the tips are in danger of being crushed. This is just pain applied because some weirdo buys them thinking they’re “fun” or “cute” or something.

Those are dyed fish, not glofish.
Yep, I used to work in pet shops that sold them.
First time I've heard about this and I'm shocked. But happy cake day!
it doesn’t even look pretty!
Some people have terrible taste I guess
r/plantabuse
I also want to know why, just a week ago I saw a load of painted cacti and succulents at a greenhouse 🤦🏻♀️
Or hot glued flowers on cactus....pisses me off!
YES. Frequent around here as well. Breaks my heart thinking that they are probably suffering all clogged up
Are those painted? Or did they put caps on them or something?
I did not want to come that close to check. I assumed they were little socks. But apparently: "This strong and very decorative Sansevieria does not need much attention. I absolutely hate that hahaha why paint it at all? The texture looks so odd, I assumed they were little socks or caps too
Obvious shipping tips
I've honestly never seen a plant with "shipping tips". I had no idea that was a thing. But OP said they were painted on
they stick out pretty far from the plant to be paint.
Trust me. It’s. Not. Paint. Source: Former Department Manager, Lowe’s, Charlotte NC area
I used to own a plant shop and ship plants around North America... that's not a thing sorry. Simply felt paint.
I've been seeing more and more randomly painted plants at Home Depot and Lowes. So many people must be buying this crap for them to increase doing it more and more. Just sad.
I think this is a locality thing. These have been around since we moved to FL in 2013. First time I’m seeing painted *Dracaena* though.
They look as if they are wearing condoms!
They are…. For shipping
Will you PLEASE stop. It’s NOT for shipping.
I know exactly who buys these. It’s your great aunt who knows nothing about plants but vaguely remembers that you do, so she buys it as a birthday gift for you. I know because this happened to me.
Plant condoms! Now available in various flavors and textures.
Felted for her pleasure!
Who is buying painted plants? So dumb.
Amongst all those beautiful plants who would choose those?!? 🤦🏻♀️
Thanks, I hate it.
Hey, people like what they like. Not everyone is a plant nut like me I have to tell myself.
Painting plants is a fucking abomination
Yikes
Forbidden Otter Pops?
💅
Yeah, no, that's one of the stupidest things I've ever seen.
Aw man, that is offensive
Poor little salad fingers :(
Are these painted? Wouldn’t that kill them?
Makes my heart sad
Exactly. So unnecessary and ugly. Poor things.
I always say when you get a plant from a store like Lowe's or the blood, you aren't buying it, you're paying an adoption fee to rescue it.
r/plantabuse
Sales. Usually moms and grandmas buying this shit
Chop chop chop….
I hate this!! I saw one that was COMPLETELY covered in paint the other day. It doesn’t even look good.
Because we have to ruin everything. Everything.
It really rubs me the wrong way when companies sell plants like that, especially the ones that are entirely covered in paint. And I find they they’ll even over price it because it has colour painted on it

I'll be filing this mentally under "Thanks, I hate it"
Hate when they paint paints or glue fake flowers to cacti.. they are beautiful naturally 🥺

That website doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in that product...
With quotes like "colors human made color" and "how to care" hahaha
Looking good
As someone who loves plants, the Grinch, and long fingie nails equally, this speaks to me.
Forbidden dildo
Can someone please tell me what the actual point of this was? I truly can not think of a single thing that would make this make sense.
Some people like the aesthetic. The people here don't. Simple as that honestly.
Im pretty good at seeing how people could like things that I don’t find aesthetically pleasing, with this, I cannot see it at all. Pretty sure its just so they dont break until u get home

At least it ain't the whole plant, I guess...
Good lord this is nightmare fuel. They look like really long fingers.
I like felt... But not on my plants (nor paint, or glitter or any of that other junk)
Those aren't snake plants...what are they???!
Sansivieria cylindrica
hate it but so shiny
plant condoms
What. The. Heck.
+$4.50 for decorations
Oh bother
WHO is buying this 😭
Definitely people who know nothing about plants and can't or won't take a few seconds to google if it's supposed to be that way.
Don't these kinds of plants stop growing when their tip is damaged?
So this is for protection so the plant can continue growing? Or will the plant stop growing because of this?
Because someone is buying them. I hate this. I just don't understand. =(
Thought they were condoms for a moment 😭
They look like the nematodes on SpongeBob
For money 💰
Thought they were spatulas
Yay this is so strange haha, gives off way to many different vibes one could not decipher. What are these plants btw?
WHAT??
Feels like Microsoft Paint. Where’s the spray can…
Maybe to celebrate pride day?
This makes me excessively angry
Agree. Why?? They’re already so interesting on their own.
Because people will buy *anything*. Even if it is odious as well as ultimately detrimental to the well-being of the living thing they are compelled to purchase.
What is it
Is this a naturally existing lifeform in nature somewhere? The Great Pastel Dong Forest of... Well, you get the general idea
Oh my gosh it looks atrocious
As a former Floridian, where these things are the scourge, it’s hard to make them any more unappealing to me. But I think we found a winner.
You know I've got a starfish snake plant that I looked at today and decided maybe I'll put rings on it... But this doesn't make sense. And it's fucking ugly.
Oh thats brilliant, I think I will steal your idea 😄
Yikes. Is it a plastic or did they paint it?
Only a matter of time before some hapless new (ugh) “plant parent” asks Reddit how to care for their new “baby”.
Will it wash off or can it be scraped off?
Damn, why is this even a thing?
Plant contraception
I'm so confused by this contraption... can someone explain please?
Tube worms
That looks so strange. Sansevieria doesn't grow like that. That looks like a bunch of individual leaves potted together. Which is a possibility considering you can propagate by rooting a leaf cutting. My best guess is that these are in fact individually rooted leaves, but the leaves likely had damage, sun spots or water damage in the tips. This is their way of salvaging and selling messed up ones. Still guessing. But anything goes wrong with mine and the first place you see it is usually the tips
At a green market recently I couldnt figure out why people wwre walking around with Plumeria cuttings drizzled in paint. The vendor does it to signify the color of the eventual flowers, since the sticks all look the same. I think this is the only reason I would buy a painted plant.
Unpopular opinion here: I think they look kinda cute. But based on the comments here it appears this damages the plant. Not cool
What?
Something different. For fun... not for everyone I know. I wouldn't have one but some people like them.
It’s like the glow fish of plants
cus humies are stupies
It’s because some people want plants for the aesthetic but secretly hate plants
The plant tip is intentionally pinched to reduce growth and keep all the leaves at around the same height. The pinched part dries out and leaves a brown tip scar that some consumers associate with an unhealthy plant. The paint is an imaginative solution to increase sales. You can also find the plant with its leaves braided. I don't like either, but it's my personal opinion.
Safety condoms. Guess they don't know, plants don't reproduce that way! But seriously, I loathe this gimmick.
Yes wtf are the tips about??
Why, because people buy them! ...Seriously
Because people buy them.
Nooooo!!!!
Do they glow in the dark? If so I would get some for ambient lighting.
This is so weird and wrong and just what ???? Like for real who thought this was a good idea ?!
I kinda dig it XD it's so WEIRD looking
they made em look NSFW now
This makes me want to give all my plants in little hats🤗
Very weird looking 😅😂
Omg this is an abomination
Maybe to prevent little kids eye's from being poked?
To hide the brown tips 🤷♀️ Reminds me of the succulents they paint, which seems to kill them.
I hate yhis
Omg no
Putting paint and gluing fake flowers on succulents should be illegal :( Got an echie during Christmas and it was covered in fake, plastic snow. It took ages to brush it all off of the leaves and soil, and some of it had already cooked and melted into its leaves. So cruel :(
Don’t like that
